[Q] Galaxy S3 SMS/Text Alert - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear All,
Does anyone know how to adjust some setting to make the text message alert happen more than once?!
It must surely be possible if the inferior iPhone does it!
Many thanks

Go SMS gives you that option and a ton more.

The stock messaging system IS pretty awful. It's a shame they didn't put more thought into it.
I use GoSMS myself. It has settings for setting up reminders.

Is there anyways to have motion work with GoSMS?

Thank you all - I'll have a look at GoSMS

If you want to use the stock messaging service, and you still want to receive motion alerts and whatnot from your phone. I have been using this app called Easy Reminder. It seems to do exactly as I had hoped, it will give you a reminder tone, or vib whenever you have missed sms. There is also configuration for missed calls. Again, this is if you would like to retain stock functionality but just want missed call and sms reminders.

Also one motion feature will alert you when you pick the phone up if you have missed events.

Yeah GO SMS is the one you want:good:

[Q] Go SMS/Third-Party SMS and Google Voice?

So, I've fallen in love with Go SMS and its themability. My problem is that I mostly use Google Voice, but I hate the application. I also don't want to forward all of my GV messages to my phone, because that will use up my messaging plan and is not as well integrated.
I know that Go SMS allows plug-ins, such as for Facebook. Does anybody know if there is any way to integrate Google Voice into Go SMS? Perhaps make a plug-in for Go SMS that would do it? Is this difficult/impossible to do?
Thanks a ton!
No plug in as specific as you want for sure. The best answer is email the dev of go sms or whoever is making the plug ins. I have a string feeling that it isn't possible/allowed though, or someone would have made some app to do it.
I haven't looked for an app that can receive Google voice messages in a data form though.. if someone has done it, contact them. I think I would've seen an app like that by now..

In your GV settings you can have SMS notification rather than use the app....pretty sure that's your best bet, but not too sure how that will eat up your messaging plan any more than regular texts (that's all it is..a text of the VM)
IMO unless the dev of Go SMS can integrate the two your only option is SMS notifications from GV settings.
SMS notification instead of using the app...

Unless you have Sprint and unlimited data. Then you're all set.
Thanks for the tip!

Super old thread! Glad some are still using the MT4G. I still use mine just not an active phone.
I'll keep my eyes out for new posts on these old threads.

Are you using AT&T Messages?

I just happened to be going through the AT&T bloatware and happened upon this app - I decided to see what it was all about, and lo and behold, it's actually useful!
It puts your SMS, voicemails, and call log in the same stream. It also puts them in the cloud, and gives you a Speech-to-Text transcription of your voicemails, which is nice.
I have some minor complaints, but overall I enjoy using it. I have a few concerns about AT&T having all my texts on a website somewhere but it's a great way to have them all already backed up if you lose your phone, etc.
You can even send SMS from the website.
So, are you using it? Do you prefer another app for these things?
I was using it the first week of ownership. It's not bad but I quit because people would text me photos and they would only show up tiny?
Went with the gosms pro app...works great.
I don't want to use it but it's the only way I can get my vvm.. I've tried using the. Apk floating around here but it keeps telling me it can't validate it. I wantbto get away from it

I use it.
I like the VV to Text and the "cloud" functionality... I only want it gone b/c it takes over notifications and I'd like to use the BLN functionality of Da_G's OC Kernel... BLN doesn't work with AT&T Messages (yet).
@n00b1269, VV to Text (Which is what AT&T Messages does) is different than regular VV. I think if you have your account changed to regular VV, then the original VV .apk will work... I think.

your going to have to call or chat with AT&T to have them reprovison your account in order to use the VVM app thats posted here in the forum i had used the messages app first then it screwed my account somehow not letting the VVM app validate if you look at that other thread i posted there
that sound like google voice only GV is 1000% better!
I used it for awhile, but the vlingo in car mode won't read text messages from it. So I switched back to handcent for text, and YouMail for vvm. Works great, and I love the new plugin for YouMail, called who are you, that gives true caller id for all calls.

Yes. I like att messaging a lot. Its simple and clean. I like the ui better than GV. For my use it has more functionality than GV except for the option to leave different voicemail greeting for different callers.
GV gives free texting but I have the $30 unlimited m to m and texting so no advantage there. Also I don't think GV support mms unless that's changed.
Only problem I can't get SMS popup app to work with it. I'm using Popup app instead and it works okay.

I am using VVM on my stock GNOTE.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452330
DL it to your pc and email it to your Gmail acct that is on your Note. Then check the box under apps that allows you to install from Non-Market places. (Unknown sources) Under settings-applications-Unknown sources.
PLEASE NOTE
if you have already set up AT&T Messages, you will need to uninstall it and either call AT&T from another phone or log into your online att.com acct and do the support chat. They will have to remove Voice Mail and the feature AT&T Messages. They will then have to provision/apply Visual Voicemail back on.
It works great and I am stoked to have it back on my phone. I just had the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and VVM was on there. Loved it. Anyway, hope this helps.

It did that to me to but I did the support chat and had them remove AT&T Messages feature and Voice Mail. I then powered my phone off and on, they added Visual Voicemail back on, powered off and on again and it worked.
The AT&T Messages feature is what is causing the issue.
I'm using it right now for VVM and it seems to be the only way to receive iMessages (Former iPhone User) in group form. If I try and get the messages from the stock app, I cant reply all... Anyone know of any other messaging apps that can receive and send messages in a group sms/mms fashion?

I know GO SMS Pro supports group messaging, but I'm having an issue with people receiving double and triple messages from me while using that.
EDIT: You can't receive iMessages. iOS and OS X only, for now.
The ATT Messages app seems to work the best for me atleast for the iMessage style group chats. Go SMS Pro always splits it up for some reason, not sure why.
question about Go SMS Pro, I installed the app and its working fine (mostly use for the msg without closing other apps) and i would like to set it to my default Messaging app. So i go into Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Messaging>Clear Defaults but when i go to launch Messaging app it does not ask me what app i want to launch nor to set it as default.

If you launch the Messaging app, you're going to launch the Samsung Messaging app. Just like if you pressed S Memo, it's going to launch S Memo, not some other note taking app on the phone. You need to open the GO SMS Pro icon. In Edit Mode, you can drag and drop the GO SMS icon over the default Messaging icon to replace it in the TouchWiz tray.

i only bring up this questions because i dont like the way the icon looks for the GO SMS Pro... i much prefer the default messaging app icon but i guess theirs no way to change that... cause replacing the icon just puts that ugly GO SMS Icon there... lol
Never used it and never realized it did all that. I thought it was like a chat thing for ATT users like 3 of my friends and me could all see each others texts like a chat room.
I've been using Google Voice for years now.
VVM
To be more specific on the issue with VVM. IF you ran the ATT Messaging app, it causes all sorts of changes in ATT's system on your account. The Tech/Rep looking at it for you will tell you all is well, and in their defence, it appears that it is correct. However, it's not and it's deep in their system and they can not control it.
To get it corrected, you have to have them COMPLETLY REMOVE YOUR DATA PLAN ( re-read that 10x.. it is EXACTLY what they have to do to get it working ). VVM is attached to your data plan. They can tinker with voice mail all day, it will do NOTHING for you. And good luck getting a rep who will actually go though the trouble of removing the data plan, especially if your on unlimited in the states still. However, if you anoy them enough, and keep them on the line long enough, they will eventually do it just to shut you up. Your best method of doing this is actually to go to the store and do it there. The reps there have permission to do it, where as the phone tech's kept having to call other departments to get it done.
After 3 days and 4-5 hours on the phone with a tech they got mine working. So I immediatly loaded the att app, it killed VVM, and I was able to drive to my local store, and they had it working again in 10 minutes ( that is 10 minutes after the guy did what i asked, complete removal of the data plan ). I did this just to prove it was a repeatable fix and not a 1x deal based on some random error.
Apologies if this is irrelevant. I don't have a i777, but I set up AT&T Messages on my i727 (Skyrocket). Didn't take more than a day to realize I hated the interface (and the fact that the app shanghais all notifications).
Unable to resolve how to turn off the notifications, on a whim I decided to just try to uninstall the app. To my amazement, it actually worked. My regular VVM went back to normal. I needed no interjection from AT&T at all.
I know this is very much a "hatchet" solution and not a "scalpel", but hopefully it's helpful all the same.

[Q] Smart Alert on custom notifications?

Hi guys,
Basically I want the benefits of Smart Alert (the vibrate when you pick the phone up if you have a missed call or message), but because the default messaging client is rubbish, I use Handcent SMS. Unless I want to deal with the double notification from Messaging and Handcent, I can't seem to find a way to get Smart Alert to work with Handcent SMS.
Does anyone have any ideas as to if this is possible?
Also, a quick secondary question that may need it's own thread. On my SGS1 I used Tasker to sync my podcasts in the morning by turning on WiFi and Autosync. I tried to set up the same script I had before, but Auto-Sync 'is unavailable on this device' which is really grinding my gears.
Thanks xda, keep up the great work.

Would be nice if this would work on Handcent. I set it as the default app for messaging. Maybe handcent has to fix this on their end.
It isn't a Handcent problem, it only works with the default messaging app.

Since you didn't answer the question of which carrier, I am going with that its Sprint from the model number in your signature.
My girlfriend's S3 is also doing this on her AT&T variant. I haven't been able to find an answer.
I have an AT&T one and it won't do it for email or text and I really would like it to. Must be a setting. Someone has to know.
You have to change the stock app. Stock messaging app is bad anyways. Look into GO SMS Pro or another app of your choice. The app has what your looking for then disable your stock messaging app.
For email just use the Gmail client. This also has the option for it.
Its all about the apps folks. I don't think the stock app has a way to have the screen to just remain off.
I think he is using blazer Rom from phantomhacker cause I also notice it. Sprint version btw.

Workaround
Found a quick fix to this that is way better than defaulting to another SMS app. Simply download "SMS pop up" from the play store, make sure its enabled, and under additional preferences untick "screen on pop up" and then under notification settings untick "enable pop up" (unless you want the pop up of course). You will have to untick the regular SMS app notifications under settings but its a fix that's working for me that still keeps the stock messaging app intact.

That will stop the screen from waking every time but won't turning notifications off in sms settings also prevent the phone the phone from letting you know at all that you have a message?
that is a nice woorkaround but too bad we have to use double the battery and 2 apps running at once to stop it. There has go to be a solution !
I made a thread about this yesterday. It happens to me everytime. On vzw
I'm running ATT variant and my screen wakes up when I get a text. Im currently rooted and looking through the messaging defaults with root explorer. Im sure theres a setting in there that is set to 1 or true that is doing this or vice versa for everyone else. I havent had an android device for quite some time so it might take me a bit to find it. If someone is a bit more experienced than me they'll probably find it faster.

Following what I wrote: If you disable the stock sms notifications under messaging>setting then the phone will not recieve any notifications regarding new messages. This is why SMS Popup is used instead. It uses a notifications service in conjunction with an optional popup to notify you when a new message arrives. If you enable notifications in SMS Popup, you will still receive notifications when new messages arive. SMS Popup is the service that will receive and notify you of the message, not the stock messaging app. It also has some other features including color customization of the LED light and selecting a specific SMS vibrate pattern. Like I said if you disable the "Enable popup" setting under the "notification" menu in SMS Popup it can serve as a intermittent workaround. As for the need to install it to accomplish this simple setting, it has a low battery and memory footprint as it is mostly a simple service and not a fully effective SMS replacement application. I have spent countless hours trying different solutions to this issue and this seems to be the best most effective workaround I could find whilst dodging SMS replacement apps like handscent and chomp. It was imperative for me to not have my screen light up in my pocket as I choose to go without a lock screen. Hope this helps and is a worthy solution until some development ushers in a new more efficient solution. Cheers!
There's got to be a way using root privileges to stop this. Heck we can stop the annoying wifi pop ups.
Thanks srath16 for finding a hackish way around.

Right. This isn't an "issue", it's just a feature that Samsung has deployed that some like and some don't. Being able to turn it on and off though would be nice.

[Q] Stock "Messages" App?

Tried searching around for a bit, couldn't find what I'm looking for, so here goes (If there is a thread that I couldn't find, I do apologize...)
Second day using the DNA (unrooted). Aside from a few customization issues (compared to my RAZR), i.e. the wallpaper setting annoyance, the only other thing that's bothering me is the Messages stock app. I truly don't like that it has the "all messages" style, showing my Voicemails with my text messages. I have a separate Voicemail app that came stock, why do I need to see them in two separate places? Very minor issue, I know haha, but it's frustrating to me.
Anyways, here's my question: Is there a setting that I'm missing where you can set the Messages app to automatically open to the SMS/MMS tab instead of All Messages? Or should I just go ahead and disable the Messages app and download Handcent or another texting app?
The voicemail app is the messaging app. They are the sane app. If you click the voicemail icon in the app drawer it'll open the voicemail tab in the messaging app. And no, there is no way to open the smsmms tab by default.

Booo. I just noticed that the voicemail icon opens up the same thing lol. That's lame. Guess I'm gunna install a different messaging app :/
