Ok, So pretty much what I have here is the Droid x2 and I want to root it, BUT, I don't know how and I don't want to screw my phone up, so I'm looking for someone to explain in detail step by step how to do it because then I can do it on my own from there, any help would be great, i'm just looking for a textbook definition and a simple step by step process on how to do this without bricking my phone, again any help with be great thanks.
I think you may find this thread useful, if not have a good look around the Droid Incredible forums as this thread came from there.
I was just looking for someone who could explain how to root and the whole process kinda from scratch because there are hundreds of threads to look through and that's just asking for eye sores.. I'm just looking for someone who can explain how to get the files I need and the whole process in a simple 1,2,3 step manner...
Read the sticky in the dev forum, there's different ways depending on what android version you have.

go there.
It says one click root for droid3 but it is same for all moto devices running gingerbread.
just be sure u are on Android version 2.3.3 or 2.3.4
U can verify ur android version by going to settings >about phone> android version
if u are on 2.2.2 then press the button on top of about phone that says system updates and follow instructions to update ur phone to gingerbread(2.3.x)
Good luck and make sure to follow ALL directions EXACTLY (feel free to pm me if u need help)
Thanks a lot, I'll take a look at it.
Ok, so I used the one click root and it worked... now im wondering, now that its rooted, What can i do with it, say change the button lay out and other stuff like that the theme, and so on
You can run ROMs on your phone now using boot strap recovery. I use Eclipse but there are other great ROMs available as well. Just make sure you understand what version of android each ROM works with.
Here is a thread to help you understand our recovery.

Do u mean the hardkey layout? I haven't seen a mod for that yet but it may be possible.
U can also now remove/freeze the bloat u don't use if u want((u know...those pesky apps that keep running even after u kill em. Taking up ram and just getting on ur nerves cuz u can't kill it. Like blockbuster, kindle, etc...)) there is a list in the forum of which are safe to freeze/remove.
Just be sure to read before u try. Then read again. Then some more. Then when u feel u r comfortable with what the mod does to ur phone, make sure u follow all directions EXACTLY and have fun and enjoy the different available mods, scripts, hacks, and of course Roms. U will be addicted in no time to flashing roms and making nandroid backups.
O yeah. Best thing u could EVER do right now is MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP using system recovery app from the link above. Trust me. U will be happy u did it when u end up needing one as we all have at one point.
I also recommend posting any question u have in this thread or a thread that pertains to ur question as starting a new thread wit a question that's been asked a hundred times wont get a good reaction
Dude, this is the reason that we have 4 million threads per forum. Read the stickies and make sure that your in the right section before posting something new. Look in the Dev section of the 2 forum for everything you need to know.

wasnt necessarily trying to be a debbie downer but take a look a the dev forum and you will see threads galore for how to root.
however I did notice that there is no guide on how to root 2.3.4.
Edit: now there is a tutorial for rooting 2.3.4

Noobs shouldn't post. They should read and read more, and when they're done..read it again. Most don't even try. They want it given to them. I, and i only speak for myself, will not support that.

O well...
I find that "noobs' are more or less "afraid" that they will brick and are just looking for info and guidance on how NOT to do that.
But that's the great thing about these types of forums. If u don't wanna help then don't. There is no need to be mean. Im not saying that u or booked were outright mean but if u can see that the OP has already been pointed in the direction and/or is receive help them why post telling him to do everything himself when he obviously doesn't have to. I was a noon my self at one point and yeah I did a TON of reading and rereading but some things don't set in until its said specifically and I have asked my fair share of "noob" questions also. Everyone has to start somewhere.
I don't even know where im going with this other than just be respectful and be nice lol
I creeped these forums (and all others) for a good 6 months before I even laid my first post. I googled everything, and READ! And you know what? I learned a fair amount.
The last month has been horrible. You see the same question/scenario in almost every subforum on here. The problem is, Android exploded as well as "modding" and became popular, and now everybody is tinkering.
I've only been involved with android for a year and a half, but when I got in it was almost a 'niche' cult type of thing. It was kind of uncool because it wasn't an iPhone. I loved it, I actually miss it. I remember showing my friends what a DROID 1 was capable of with a custom overclocked kernel.

Hi just got s2 today exchanged desire HD. Going to root on Monday but noticed there are 3 development areas for this phone how do I know which one is for my phone?
Thanks, PS while I'm here which ROM is recommended and why

Regarding which rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612881
As for the 3 development. Check about phone under settings. Make sure you have the i9100 instead of the i9100G. If you have the i9100G, there is only 1 development section.
If you have the i9100, just check out the other 2 development sections.

Put it this way mate...
His answer is actually right. Your usage pattern, mine, and his are unlikely to be the same. Taste as well. Therefore best ROM discussion is a moot point.
On different sub forum, he mentioned that you should take precautions differentiating I9100 and I9100G. If you need additional explanation, please read the sticky thread in the Original Dev sub-forum stating the difference.
My last note, don't write anything when you're emotional. It will just backfire.
Note to OP - acting like a **** won't get you the help/info you're after. On the contrary, I'd be surprised if you get much help after that. Kaze asked a valid question.
The 3 development sections have nothing to do with anything re: rooting your phone (or anything else for that matter).
You need to start with something easy by the looks of things, might want to read the Stickies. No roms are recommended. Asking for rom recommendations is the height of laziness. Try a bunch of roms out until you find one you like the same as everyone else.

Note to you, sell your S2 and get a iPhone or Nokia 3310.
When your new to a forum or should I say a part of a forum your there looking for help. I.e. the whole point of a forum.
I know that trying roms out is a personal preference but it is quite nice to have a couple of opinions to start out but hey that was clearly too hard to do.
This is meant to be a question and answers area so asking questions is what is meant to happen. What is the point in having a forum if no one is wiling to have a discussion about things.
Only seen this kind of attitude in certain places, quite sad really

Yes but you miss the point. This question has already been asked a million times over, no need for another topic, go read the ones already created. This is specifically why mods have created sticky topic telling you not to ask this question and why the user who you *****ed about gave you the link.

Plenty of discussions going on.
well put it this way I just read the thread pl4sma told me to read and I'm still not really much clearer why there are 2 sub forums in development area, and by the looks of it I'm not the only one confused so that is a valid question.
The second part I was simply asking for opinions rather than flashing consistently to find what I want. I find as you use the phone you realise which bits are best and change ROM based on that, when you initially start using you don't really know which one to try so it is nice to get opinions and maybe base your first try on what others think.
You have to remember that everyone starts out new and its over time you work things out. Doesn't mean people should be flamed instantly. Search doesn't always give desired results.
Plus if people don't want to answer things over and over then surely they can simply choose not to respond

One is original development the other uses bits and pieces from other devs to build the roms . How to tell as usual its in the stickies .
The second part I was simply asking for opinions rather than flashing consistently to find what I want. The what is best rom is banned due to the thousands of exact same posts and the fact that users and their needs are different .
The what is the simplest rom for me to start learning how to flash SGS2 is an acceptable type of question .
You have to remember that everyone starts out new and its over time you work things out. Doesn't mean people should be flamed instantly. Search doesn't always give desired results.
No but you normal read the rules followed by the stickies faqs and guides first .
Plus it was you that started the bad behaviour with your reply to the first valid answer you received .
Plus if people don't want to answer things over and over then surely they can simply choose not to respond
Its the ones who refuse to read and ask the same stuff over and over that dont really belong as they just take .

Thanks for another decent reply, I understand the differences now and is really all that was needed. As you can see from the original question the ROM part was at the end but having a start point would have been nice.
problem I had with first reply is they probably took more time to find the link they did then it would of taken to answer the question.
This discussion would have ended there and then, but instead giving such an unhelpful response caused all of this.
Lessons to be learned by all I think.

Getting a stock Amaze today.
Background: I've rooted, S-off'd, and ROM'd *other* HTC phones before and used ARHD on the Sensation.
I'm looking for root, stability, and good battery life. I don't care much about minor performance tweaks.
Is hasoon2000's all in one tool the best way to root today?
Are any of the rom's a big improvement over stock with no serious side effects?
I know there are FAQs and Wiki's, but I've also been around XDA long enough to ask before diving in to a new phone before I use possibly outdated guides.
Thanks in advance.

I swear, if people spent half the time answering questions as they did explaining why they're not answering questions they don't even know the answer to on XDA...
Anyhow, the all-in-one tool seems to have done the trick (perm root/recovery).
I'll report back when I try a ROM.

Stop being lazy and whining. Try the couple/few (not like there's a ton) that are out there and make up your own mind.
Asking whig Rom is better is insulting to devs that may not get mentioned. Read OPs and threads and see if Any known issues are there.

You guys know that it is a running joke everywhere else on the internet how unhelpful people on these forums can be.
This is a Q&A forum. I ask a Q, you might give an A. Here's how to figure it if you should respond:
If know the answer to the question and you have the time/patience to give a helpful answer, go for it. If no, move along.
Instead you've wasted everyone's time and clouded the thread by arguing about the value of the question. At 88 views, at least some people are interested in an answer.
I'm sure you know a lot about this phone and have helped many people, but I don't care if you invented sliced bread if you don't know the answer to my question or have the time to answer it.
If you need help interacting with other people in a forum when you do know the answer to the question, I've provided the template below. You might "sticky" it.

There's loads of threads of roms with hundreds, possible thousands of post on user input about how the roms run, advantages and disadvantages, no two users would like the same rom, I preferred stock lightly modified by me while gg like quick Droid and Ziggy liked speed rom, do you think I can recommend a rom to them or its a better idea for them to try them out for themselves? I'd recommend stock but he obviously doesn't like stock or he wouldn't be looking for a custom rom, then what? I tell him speed rom is nice because someone said so but I have no clue myself? Like really, grow up, this is no place for childish questions and responses, there was no need for things to get all hostile here, your best option would be to try thing's on your own, if you can't make your own decisions from your own personal liking and experience, then you sir will settle for second best because of your attitude towards it
For the record, what others think about the support on this site, really doesn't matter, this place is for development, not support. We offer help when we can because as a human trait, people do stupid things or just can't keep their cool long enough to sort out an issue. Therefore count it a privilege many take the time out of their day and work to write the multiple guides here and the devs for releasing their work.

On another note... Asking which Rom is better is a flame war waiting to happen and is offensive to the devs whose roms aren't mentioned. And since user experience and needs vary, you will never get a helpful answer. Mix that with all the fanboys in the amaze forum and u get a mess.. how do I know? Cuz there is already multiple threads asking which Rom is better than which.. I READ.

Ok just to be clear: I am not asking what people think is the best method, please take a look at the questions
If nothing goes wrong with the delivery I will receive a Samsung galaxy s3 tomorrow . Since I want to root it I have been looking for available methods.
With some googling and looking around on xda I found several tutorials (of questionable quality I might add. Is it so hard to link to developer pages instead of a mediafire link that might be outdated a month later? ) and methods.
So far the most common methods I found are the following:
- The Samsung galaxy s3 toolkit
- Chainfire's CF-ROOT
At first glance cf-root seems the most straightforward method. I am however wondering if there are any drawbacks, for example; I see some issues with cwm listed and also no busybox(isn't this included in most roms and shouldn't I be able to install it from the market as well?)
The toolkit seems to be the most feature rich and to me it looks like the third rooting option is the most complete one. However I am not able to find a nice summary/manual for the toolkit, it might be so user friendly that such a thing is not needed but in my experience such a thing never is. It also seems that I end up with factory default phone with this method?
So my questions are basically as follows:
- Are there are big differences in the methods I found?
- Which method is preferable?
- Any drawbacks I should know about? (I know about the flash counter)
- Am I overlooking any better options?
P.S.
I am not new to rooting and custom roms. Just new to doing it with samsung phones a HTC Desire has a slightly different rooting process.
The rooting toolkit is so easy. Idiot proof

I did gather indeed that the toolkit is indeed a....toolkit and can be used to flash cf-root as well if I wanted to. But the toolkit also includes a rooting method.I am having a hard time actually finding any factual data about the workings of the two methods and their differences.

Really tnx for reading... I am getting my phone tomorrow and I am doing some research in advance (like stated in the op) and make a educated decision. I do appreciate the help but I am really trying to find as much information as possible. And so far not a lot of people can give me any factual information about the differences and all I get is "method X is the best because it worked for me!" Which basically only answers the question what method prefer but not why they do so.
So for people overlooking it these are my questions regarding cf-root and the toolkit:

- Any drawbacks I should know about? (I know about the flash counter)

- Are there are big differences between the methods?
- Any drawbacks I should know about? (I know about the flash counter)
- Am I overlooking any better options?

Yeah it seems really easy to do, a lot easier than my desire 2 years ago
But the same goes for the toolkit, so I am still looking for someone who can explain the structural differences between the two methods of rooting and the results.
Simple question really...
In the DEV sections, why is there not one for ATT and one for international devices ??
People will get confused, and devices can proberbly get bricked from that alone, and that is just stupid...
Pleace split ATT from international section....
People won't get confused if they take the trouble to read. This has been discussed before.

If you would have used the search funtion you would have found an answer. Also this is in the wrong section seeing as it is a question.

I'm not really sure how anyone can defend the lack of separation in this forum. And the easy (and silly) way out is to simply say "read".
Everyone was outraged when they combined the S3 forums and after a couple of weeks of people complaining, they finally started (correctly) separating them. They need to do the same with this device's forum.
well if people can READ then they won't come into issues
Take it as you want...
It WAS only ment as a friendly heads up...
You are offcourse right that people can just read the header, provided that headers or at least the OP say it all, consequently at all threads...
But then again...
In the heat of the moment, I do understand if people can grab files from the wrong thread... And end up with a bricked device...
You actually also ask people to know that ATT and Telus is not just names of some odd features, and that it in fact carriers using different hardware, from the other site of the world...
Carriers that some people proberbly have never even heard about before...
And the other way arround, you need to get ATT and Telus users to understand that they can only use those files/roms, and that they can't use "international" and often unmarked roms...
- you need to make them to understand that "international" is not that international after all...
Oh well, I am just lucky it is not my decision, and also not me that get the blame WHEN someone grab the wrong file at some point...
An other positive we can get from splitting the dev section, is that it would be a lot less work to keep up with the development on the device that YOU own...
Hey, a thought...
WHY on earth have the admins made new section for the hox+ device at all...
There is actually not that much more different hardware from hox to the hox+, than there is from hox+att to hox+int...
Why at all have the xda-forums split into different manufacturer sections and again devided into different handsets...
People can "just read the header", can't they now ?
At last:
IF a wrong rom was only resulting in a silly language, funny colours on the screen, or perhaps a dead radio, and it was fixed easy just by flashing the right file, then I wouldn't care at all...!!
BUT this fault CAN actually brick people's device's, and that is why we should help people as much as possible, and split the ATT/TELUS from the International section...
Happy new year...

Another thing, I know there is a processor difference as well but why are the international/ATT HOX forums split but ours aren't?

le sigh
Seriously people, your answer is, "JUST READ!" They should be separate in order to avoid confusion from the beginning. A lot of users would avoid issues if this was the case.

So the warnings you can read in some of the threads against flashing wrong files, is now not to be trusted anyway you say ??
Sent from my HTC One X+ using xda premium
AT&T users are concerned about the wrong thing.... Aside from cooked roms (which I have a great appreciation for) we have no developers for things like CM/AOSP/AOKP. And instead people want to complain that threads are not separated.... Look at the damn description of what you are installing and the problem is solved. if you are in "the heat of the moment" looking for something and cant be bothered to read what you are doing you should consider buying an iPhone. There is no excuse for stupidity.

the devices are S-ON which makes a brick very unlikely
People use the word brick too often these days. A brick is when your phone is totally dead (corrupt/damaged bootloader). Not when your stuck in a bootloop. Flashing a custom rom only writes to /system/ /data/ and /cache/. So unless you do something totally retarded it's pretty much impossible to brick flashing the wrong rom.

It's not only "pretty much", but totally imposible to brick a s-on phone with flashing a rom. We had more than a hundred of One X on IRC channel that were "bricked" and with combined effort they all ran again eventually.
That said, it is possible however to ruin it so much that it is a very hard task for "unexperienced" users to get it to life again.
That makes it even more important for "unexperienced" users to read, and read and the read again before they start flashing. That is unfortunately something that got out of fashion these days. In the days you could actually "brick" your phone ppl were much more cautious.
Dividing this forum is a thing that is discussed, but I assure you that would not keep some ppl from flashing the wrong rom. On One X some don't even realize when they are on wrong forum and complain that the rom they installed wouldn't boot. So, whatever precautions we take, they only help so far...
Flashing an ATT Rom into an International device or vice versa, will most likely not brick the device but that doesn't justify why ATT and International threads are together. I kind of agree with OP, we should better have 2 different threads as Roms, themes, mods for one device doesn't work for the other.
I am also surprised to see both devices into the same thread :silly:

So should that count for not helping people as much as possible by splitting the forum ?
Why not help as much as possible ?
Hey...
People also get hit by other cars when they don't notice a red light, but that don't stop us from having light signals in the trafic...
I know that many of you would LOVE to be the "wrong forum"-police anyway, so why fight splitting the dev forums

Please stop beating a dead horse and instead do something to actually help out on the forums. Why would you want to divide an already small community? This is not like the original One X that had a large following immediately. They are doing a favor to AT&T users by keeping us in here because people are nice enough to port their roms.

saves opening a ton of threads, if people actually read the threads.. rom's are split into correct headers... sure call us silly but people need to start learning to read
This is just my 2 cents, but not everyone knows the difference between the AT&T and International versions. Sure they have to read first and do their research, but at the same time the threads and files are freely available. They shouldn't be messing with their devices in the first place but then again the methods are just a click away.
Do we let the less-informed be "stupid" just so the community doesn't look as little/bare as it is currently? I don't know, maybe, but I have made mistakes (luckily not so severe) and a lot of people have too.
