[Q] Software update Photon 4G - Motorola Photon 4G

After searching for an answer here, I noticed Sprint is saying that the 2.3.5 update is available. I know there was some issues with it "leaking" out after the soak test but has anyone acquired the file to manually update their photon? Ive not seen an sbf or even an update.zip, and both Sprint and Motorola say the update should be available for all. I've gone back to completely stock, and still no update. Sprint of course says its there, but neither anyone on the phone or at the stores can help me get it. I am comfortable enough doing it myself if I had the requisite files, but I don/t Is there anyone out there in photon land who might have the file I am searching for? Its PHOTON 4G_MR5 (4.5.1A-1_SUN-254_12.Sprint.en.US) (45.4.12.MB855.Sprint.en.US). If anyone has it or if this has been answered I apologize, but I have searched without success, and as usual both the carrier and manufacturer are useless.... I know what the update brings and no I don't care about the boot loader. I just want the update and the 1080p recording!!
Thank you!
If you have the file, please PM me, and let me know. Otherwise, I will check back and hopefully someone will have an answer for me. I am not going to post my email or anything, so please PM me about it!

If you go and upgrade to 2.3.5 you wont be able to unlock the bootloader anymore

Thanks but

IF you re-read my original question, I am NOT concerned with that, I simply want the file. Anyone else?

If the software update menu doesn't work for you, look into this. I haven't used this file, I don't know for sure but others have stated that they think that's the official one.

It would be a mistake on all counts.. Don't people realize that you can get 'everything' that the 2.3.5 update entails including 1080p without crippling your poor phone? Its like buying a Ferrari so you can drive 35mph around town..
And there's no need to go all CAPS LOCK on him, he was just trying to be informative.

Check the Imperium Website downloads section. You need to be on 198_6 prior to flashing.
Things to keep in mind before you flash it:
Every single fix or improvement has already been done by the devs here without the drawbacks
The devs here have already improved upon this release so custom ROM's are faster and offer more features
If you don't like=You have to buy a new phone
If it breaks something=You have to buy a new phone
If you change your mind=You have to buy a new phone
If you want GSM support in the US=You have to buy a new phone
YOU CANNOT DOWNGRADE, UNLOCK OR REVERT THE CHANGES MADE BY THIS UPDATE

the source code was just added earlier today to sourceforge.net check it out it might help...
http :// sourceforge. net/projects/photon4g.motorola/files/

Thank you all, I think lokifish made up my mind for me. And I do apologize about the caps, it was just a very unhelpful post. Not their fault I realize, but just wasnt helping my situation. I will look into the custom roms a little further I think.

Well I just got a Warranty replacement from my local Sprint store and my Photon states system version 45.3.6.MB855.Sprint.en.US and Android version 2.3.4. I don't have any system updates and I tried flashing the sbf to unlock the bootloader and it fails. I do believe the version I have won't allow me to unlock but if the Android version is suppose to be 2.3.5 on this system version I wonder how the hell I have 2.3.4. Anyone with an idea???

To unlock you want 2.3.4. What guide did you follow to attempt unlock?

I myself got a replacement photon less than a month ago and was able to succesfully unlock my bootloader. However I did struggle a bit. I will look for all the files I used and see if I can send you on the right path.

Cool! I would appreciate that! I'm fairly good at figuring things out but I'm still new to the photon stuff. I left mine stock after I got it then my girlfriend broke her phone so I didnt have it for a while. LOL! I finally have it back now. Now I like to learn more about development on different devices to contribute more to the community. Just taking it step by step now LOL!

DO NOT DOWNLOAD FROM THE PUDDING THREAD!!! PEOPLE HAVE PERMANENTLY LOCKED THEIR PHONE BY FLASHING THE WRONG FILE!!!
DOWNLOAD THE ROOT-UNLOCK-RELOCK PACK!!!
You have to follow the steps!!! If you are in USB debug then your are not in RSD mode which means you can't flash ANY SBF. Straight from the Compendium;
Start RSD Lite on your computer
Reboot phone into RSD mode: VOL down/Power. Use VOL down to scroll though options til you see "RSD" then VOL up to enable.
Connect phone to computer.
Flash derpunlock.sbf.
Close RSD Lite and disconnect phone.
Reboot phone into fastboot mode (same process as getting to RSD mode) and connect phone to computer
Double click "Command Prompt" shortcut in the "Unlock" folder.
In the Command Prompt window type moto-fastboot oem unlock
Look for the UNIQUE ID number and copy it.
Type moto-fastboot oem unlock YOUR_UNIQUE_ID_THAT_YOU_JUST_COPIED (fastboot should reply <bootloader> Device is now unlocked )

IMHO this update is totally not worth it. I (admittedly) totally screwed up and took this update. My phone is rooted but on stock. I hadn't had any other problems with other updates but I guess I was just playing with fire before and got lucky then. Well, 12 hours and a lot of yelling later, I have my phone back. I won't accept the update, not worth the headache again.
In all of my research to fix the phone, I found this YouTube video... (my new membership won't let me post links,). Anyway, search on YouTube for "How to unroot / unbrick the Motorola Photon 4G to stock Android" by QBKing77. The video should come right up. LOTS OF HELP! I'm a visual learner and like to see others run through the process first before I try so I know what to expect. Just make sure you have the latest files before you begin the whole process.
Lots of luck!

Agree that this update is not worth it in terms of functionality. I'm honestly not sure why Moto is bothering with it, but it speaks well of their commitment to support.
But, since (after endless ROM cooking & flashing in the the WinMo days), I've decided to stay stock Android, I did this during the soak test so that perhaps I can get a peak at stock ICS a bit early in the ICS soak.
BUT - anyone who likes custom ROMs needs to totally ignore 2.3.5 and its locked bootloader.

Wow.....
I have know a lot more

[Q] Need help updating rooting phone to gingerbread!!!!!!

Wow I’m really drained I’ve spent a lot of hours trying to update to gingerbread (OTA) but just can’t get anything to work.
My phone Atrix 4G currently running build OLYFR_U4_1.8.3, the phone is rooted and has the webtop hack.
What I have tried so far
I have tried to flash the spf file using RSD lite with the new gingerbread update. No luck about 10 min in the program stops and says flash failed . I tried using RSD lite to flash back to an earlier version again same problem flash fails .
I have tried the over the air update and it failed; I got the yellow triangle, when I got the yellow triangle I swiped the bottom of the screen and it said DockService.apk failed, so I searched and found numerous people saying I had to revert back to the orginal files if I did the webtop hack. I reverted back to the orginal files using super manager but now my DockService.apk, PhonePortal.apk, and DockProvider.apk all say (no install); it looks like this:
DockService.apk(no install)
I tried installing the apk files using super manager and it attempts to but fails .
I’m really at a loss here I have no idea what to try anymore this is just really kicking my butt, could someone please help me or point me in the right directions. Thank you in advance.
are you trying to unlock your bootloader? or just upgrade?
Have you tried flashing the pudding SBF?
I had a problem with the update and originally flashed the Fruit Cake img files using fastboot. Maybe that will work. Look for the Fruit Cake Thread in the Dev section, or try the pudding SBF..

I know I see an option for fastboot when I turn the phone on holding the power and down volume button but that’s where my knowledge ends, can you tell me or point to a thread on how to Fastboot?
I haven’t heard of the pudding SBF I will look more into that now, thanks.

I have the spf file for 1.8.3 but when i try using RSDlite to flash back it fails??
Is there another way to flash back??
fastboot works in conjunction with the command prompt on your pc. It's much better than rsd
Anyone got any ideas on why in super manager my dockservice, portal, and dockprovider all say no install in the GUI??
Is this going to affect me in anyway?

Not true, he can flash pudding and not unlock. I hadn't unlocked for a month or so after I had pudding. It runs fine without running command line oem unlock. ^_^
I had the same problem.
I update my phone successfully only thru my PC.
Download and install automated update tool from motorola support site which will guide you through the update process. This tool will upgrade your device to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) from any previously released version.

[Q] Going back from CM7 to full stock

Hello all,
I have a question, which, I am sure many people will say to just go the Fruitcake route, but it is deeper than that, so please hear (read?) me out real quick.
I have an AT&T Atrix 4G and is currently on CM7 (I don't know what other details I should give on this). Loving the setup and the phone but now the phone is "broken" for the 2nd time. "Broken" as in the Headphone socket died on me for the 2nd time. Now from my first experience, I know that I need to ship this back to them after they send me my replacement. Previously, I had not unlock the bootloader yet, just rooted the phone and did some things where I could restore to stock by myself.
However, this time is whole different beast. I am sure I cannot send this phone back with CM7 on it, as well as an unlock bootloader. So I really need to bring this phone to a complete stock, preferably gingerbread stock so I can start shipping it out.
So is there a way to do so? I basically just need to bring the phone to the point where they will not figure out that it has tinkered with. Can I get rid of the unlocked sign in the boot up screen, as well as CM7? I need to be able to talk with them over the phone and provide them with valid answers to anything they ask.
Please help. I need to send this out asap, so any help will be greatly appreciated, of course without bricking the phone
THanks,
Sean

I'm in the same boat. My phone has screen problems so I need to send it away. I've flashed Fruitcakes 1.8.3, but the 'unlocked' is still there. So I'm planning on an SBF flash of 4.5.91
I'm still a bit worried that it'll brick, so if anyone know's for sure if I can go from a fruitcake to the 4.5.91 sbf, I'd love to hear from you
I have read the similar threads, but didn't find anyone with the exact same setup, so wasn't quite sure. From the thread SSPA posted, it looks like going from anything 2.2 based, up to the 4.5.91 (2.3.4) sbf flash should be ok?
---------- Post added at 04:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:35 PM ----------
I'm not sure about this... on the 4.5.91 sbf thread, the OP says;
WARNING : FLASH THIS SBF ONLY IF YOU ARE STILL RUNNING STOCK AT&T 2.2.2 WITH A LOCKED BOOTLOADER. ONCE YOU FLASH THIS ANY ATTEMPT AT A DOWNGRADE TO A PREVIOUS VERSION WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE.
and then a reply below says;
I dont know about this sbf, but the service sbf i got from the motorola software update tool worked fine with the leaked ota (which is apparently the same as the official ota) and i was unlocked before i flashed it
Have you found much else Sean?

Well, from what I read on Sspa's last link posted, people returned the phone with the unlocked sign on it and never got into any issues. So I think all that matters is installing Fruitcake and fixing the ROM.
I have a feeling it's true what they said, that they will not even look at the phone and just throw it aside with all the defective phones. My coworker who is in the communications dept. doesnt even look at the defective phones and just throws them in the garbage bin lol.
I just called Motorola, and they said my Atrix isn't covered by warranty here in Australia anyway (bought from AT&T), so I thought the SBF could possibly fix the phone...
It worked fine, but the screen problem still remains. So I've ordered one on ebay for $35, because at a repair shop it'll be at least $120. Hopefully this finally fixes the problem!

[Q] Atrix Battery Died during OTA update, won't boot...HELP?!?

Hello everyone. I have a problem with my Motorola Atrix and I am hoping someone might be able to help me.
I got it as a late Christmas present so its still practically new. I tried doing an OTA update from 2.2 to 2.3 and the battery died whilst the update was taking place. I replaced that battery with my spare battery which was fully charged, but now it won't load. When trying to load on startup, it gets stuck at the dual core logo and gives an error message if I press the volume button. The message says something like "Starting RSD protocol support". I am gutted...
I have been searching feverishly through the forums for some help, and I have come across some information with regards to the types of bricks, ie hard/soft, but I am not sure which it is in my case. There is alot of information available, but I can't find any with my problem. I am not opposed to trying to fix the problem myself as I have some experience in messing around with software, though that was back in the days of p2k-tools some 10 years back, but I would appreciate a nudge in the right direction and some advice maybe since I am almost clueless about Android software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Additional info:
The phone is completely factory default software wise, so is not rooted or running any form of custom firmware. UK carrier - Tmobile.
I think you have two options. If it's still under a warranty, take it back to the store and ask them to repair it. Or if you don't care about a warranty, you can follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261 to unlock your phone and install a custom ROM. But if you decide to unlock you phone, before trying anything, read the post completely. I'm saying again, read the post completely before doing anything.
I myself unlock the Atrix and using a custom ROM and I have a pretty good battery life compared with a stock ROM.
Thank you for your response. I will look into the warranty idea and see how that goes. I hope there is not a long wait period which is my biggest reservation about this option since I need my phone.
In so far as installing the custom ROM and unlocking it, is there maybe another way that would allow me to continue to use stock firmware and OTA updates? I have been reading through some threads where they say once there is a custom firmware, running an OTA update could brick the phone. I also really just prefer to keep the phone original. If this can't be done, then I will have to give the warranty thing a serious go before I consider the alternative.

Go here > http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Android_Products/ATRIX-4G_Software_Update_Page. Another alternative is to flash 2.3.4 stock via RSDLite, but if the update went through on your phone you could brick. Hopefully one of these will work for you! Other option is to unlock the bootloader.
If you have a full battery why not download the T-Mobile software and write it back to the phone via rsd.

By now the battery is just short of full, but it should be enough to get through the flash. Where would I get the T-mobile software? I have checked their site and the latest android update they have is 2.1 on the site. I have also looked at the Motorola website, but their means of update is via an update program called Motorola Software Update.
Sorry if I appear a bit dense, its just from what I'm seeing is that I may only have one chance to do this and get it right, else its bye bye Atrix. I am still waiting on a response from Motorola with regards to my query about the warranty. If I can get it sorted myself, I will definitely prefer that as opposed to having to wait on them to diagnose etc.
Have a look for the ATRIX super firmware thread on here and see if the T-Mobile software is in it, it may be the old software but it's worth a try as you can send the phone in to be fixed or just take it to a T-Mobile store and let them deal with it for you.

If I implemented the automated update via the link you provided, could that circumvent the potential bricking you described, provided the program can access the phone? By the way, the link you gave was software for an AT&T mobile, while mine is T-Mobile UK. Will this make a difference?

Thanks for the offer pal. Wish I was in the London area to get the help but, I'm in Stoke.
Ok, i have no idea if this will work but hay the phone is knacked so why not give it a go, it's under warranty so you can send it back if it don't work go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944 find the orange full and t-mobile service files, download them and write them to your phone via rsd, it's kinda hard to say what one first, its a shame that the t-mobile one is not a full one as that would be perfect, the battery should still charge so leave it on over night, also if can try and make a motorola service cable, that will put power to your so no need to worry about a battery, have a look on here as to how to make it.........ok forget all that if you check out post 276 on the link above it has download for the GB rom t-mobile uk which is what you need to wirte via rsd.
Even if you don't pay you're carrier for warranty Motorola gives you a year warranty on the phone and that's the sane with almost all carriers I sent my unlocked atrix in for screen issues and they still fixed it and same with my hd2 and ipod touch
Any update on this?

Sorry pal, been busy with classes so no time to update the thread. Basically, I tried to update via Motorola software, but it seems it cant access the phone to begin the update process. I tried to do download the OEM ROM of 2.3.4 from the ATRIX superthread, as this seems the safest option to me, bit it seems its on a host that no longer allows downloads. I tried to request a mirror, but I don't seem to have the authority to post in that thread. If you or anyone can make the request for it to be reuploaded to another mirror, I would be most great full.

When you say that the updated doesn't start because the Motorola software can't access the phone, is your phone recognized when you plug it into your computer?

The laptop recognizes the phone since I can hear USB noises when plugged and unplugged. When I try to run the software, it tries to connect and then I get the message:
"Motorola Software Update is unable to identify your device at this time. Please try again."

Yes I did try the link, but sharing is disabled on that host so I cant download it. That is exactly what I need from what I understand, but I don't have enough access to request a mirror, even though I have more than 10 posts for some reason.
Ok, well it seem over the whole megaupload thing any of the file sharing sites are playing it safe, you need to find someone who has the t-mobile file already and can send it to you, i have the orange one but not sure if it will brick your phone or not.

The OP of that file would have access to his files on the host, its only 3rd parties who can't download his files from uploaded to his account. If he/some one else who has it can upload it to another site, it would be fine. He should still have access to his files on his account with the host though, so if anyone is feeling kind to make the request on my behalf, I would appreciate it very much since I am being prevented from posting in that section myself. Well I did read that ,actually if you look in my signature I already have a backflop running 2.3.4 on cm7. I am looking for what people think is best for the atrix. and the process for the new 2.3.6 update that caused some upset.
*EDIT* I'm sorry I did realize this wasn't posted from my computer

if ur on at&t !!
the best way to unlock is to use the automatic bootloader unlocker !!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871&highlight=automatic
for how to do it, here's a youtube video describing the same !!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6a0BWquqAc
also do some research before doing it !!
and be sure, never flash sbf files or use rsd lite after unlocking the bootloader !!!
i unlocked my bootloader using the automatic unlocker (but i was on 2.3.4[4.5.91]) !!!
Well i need to unlock that to load custom roms right?

It has been a while since I rooted/unlocked the bootloader of my phone, but if I remember correctly, I followed similar steps as these.
Currently, I am using CWMs Touch Recovery, can be downloaded from their site, then flashed to the recovery partition using fastboot, I'm sure you know how to do this if you rooted the phone via command prompt. Do a google search, otherwise and current recovery image will do find for what you need, but read the reviews before flashing, some fail hard.
Once that is all done, you pretty much are all set, CWM Touch allows for backups to be completed, flashes to occure and wipes to happen.
I would also suggest that instead of just sticking with just jokersax, I would also suggest to check out turls, also available from jokers site. I personaly find turls to be a little more stable, and I seem to have minimal issues with turls, but everytime I see an update is available, I still jump to that one just to see what is up, then I may or may not jump back down, only because I can
After using turls and jokers ICS images, I haven't seen any downsides compared to stock, CM7, or any variants of the like, I love me my ICS. As far as official updates go, I wouldn't be too concerned about that, unless if somewhere else documented, I don't think the ATRIX will be seeing any official updates, but if something does show up, there is a script available on this site to resotre back to stock, then updates should work just fine. This tool seems to do the trick, I've used it personaly myself, got me right back to the stock moto install.
Stock ics from moto is official for q3 its on there site ^.^. But i want is sooner. Im just worried the new 2.3.6 update might of changed something

You have to flash an SBF File to your phone Via RSDLite your phone will reboot a few times don't be scared
Then go to command prompt and type in command
fastboot oem unlock
Will give you Unique ID
Then type in
fastboot OEM unlock ############ unique ID
Then bam Unlocked bootloader
Make sure you use the correct SBF File for AT&T
And make sure you have A fastboot.exe file in your android sdk
To flash CWM flash it through the app first then flash it to your phone via Command Prompt
On command prompt type
fastboot flash recovery recovery press shift should auto correct make sure it is in the same folder as your Fastboot.exe
CM9 Bell Atrix using XDA App
thank you so much! how hard is it to reverse this? ( the boot loader unlock) say if i need to RMA it to AT&T or something...also what do you guys use as a recovery and or what do you recommend?
Once you unlock your bootloader - you cannot reverse it - its permanent... you can never re-lock it.
so no more OTA updates?
Not easily - it can be done.... Most NEW Roms are built off the OTA's and are better than the stock releases..... OTA's are not really a big deal. Biggest issue with unlocking your bootloader is that it instantly voids any/all warranties.
*sigh* i know but mine is up as far as i know and i am already two years with the phone....so im just waiting for quad cores...
i was able to return my unlocked Atrix to AT&T by flashing the stock 2.3.4 blah.blah.91 sbf. This does not re-lock it but gets rid of the Unlocked msg at boot screen
thank you ! that's what i needed to know!
so can i install a new recovery before i unlock the boot loader? which would you recommend? as i need to do a nandroid >.< , i did all this on my moto backflip...a while ago..and well....it didnt need an unlock..

Wrong Version?
I am sure you guys are trying to help out, but most are missing an important fact in his request. I noticed this because I am looking for the same answer for the same version as the OP. 2.3.6
The solutions posted so far all refer to 2.3.4 and do not work with 2.3.6. The one updated thread with a link to a site that claims to work on 2.3.6, does not list the Atrix MB860 with 2.3.6, it does list it with 2.3.4.
This does not work, it gets an dialog box error "failed to chmod file: /data/local/tmp", then another that says "failed to get shell root"
The one thread that users claim it does work with 4.5.141.MB880.ATT.en.US, but that's not an option in the script. And they don't give a clue as to what steps they followed.
EDIT: Took a leap of faith, man that turned my stomach ( this is my wife's phone, I don't want to brick it ). I can confirm that the latest link past page 85 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871&highlight=automatic is valid as of 03/01/2012 and it is what I used. Followed the OP instructions and then then followed the prompts in the script. It did unlock, then I rooted and flashed CWM, option two.
Its the same as the 2.3.4 way. I figured it out an now have ics jokers rom

Bootloader Unlock?

Are we expecting the global version to have the ability to be bootloader unlocked? Looking at the recent Motorola devices, they seem that most can be unlocked and kernel sources are published.
My Motorola edge plus from Verizon actually has the toggle for bootloader unlocking. I am kind of shocked!

It's not unusual for Moto phones on Verizon to show but it doesn't mean it actually works.
Hey this is just a question. Has anybody tried Google there is a ton of information about unlocking the bootloader.. I'm reading some of the info now. I'm debating on getting this phone or the OnePlus 8 pro. I'm kinda stuck with Verizon right now that's why the 8 pro from OnePlus looked real good. But reading about edge + and getting the unlock code from motorola it looks good too.

The toggle does function. But I haven't tried to unlock the bootloader. But if I toggle it on it does give me a warning about unlocking. I actually returned the phone as I was not satisfied with the camera. I have 2 grand kids and I found enough situations where the camera took pictures that were a little blurry that I didn't feel like I needed to keep the phone. I hated to do it, I really liked the phone, but the camera was a deal breaker.

I think that you just gave me hope in that if I decide to purchase one shortly, that the toggle will still be available to unlock the bootloader.
Question: Assuming that the toggle will still unlock the bootloader, I would not have a need for any fastboot mode command lines?
Hey Guy I just picked this device up straight from Verizon , it came today and I already checked off OEM UNLOCK. I wanted to even see if it depended on sim so...I am coming from an LG V60 and when I got the new phone I just simply activated with the sim it came with went straight to developer options to see if it was greyed out. It wasn't I checked it off and I went to the Motorola page and checked to see if my device could be unlocked which it could and I got my unique key and submitted it. It said I should be getting the email with the unlock key for Fastboot. However it doesn't look like there is factory images but I am willing to test stuff while I have a backup phone and also since I am in my return period.

Please keep me posted on whether the email with the fastboot commands holds true and are you looking for factory images for testing purposes or couldn't you just run with the device as-is until the images materialize?

I will keep posted, yes I wouldn't try anything until factory images are available. I wanted to see if it was really going to let me go through with requesting the lock... I thought the email would be fast but its been 30 min no email yet.

Unlocking the bootloader should not interfere with the overall operability of the device, e.g., text, calls, data, etc. Is there a reason as to why you are waiting for factory images before unlocking?

I read an article that the unlock code is obtained from the supplier within a maximum period of 24 business hours, although there are cases where this could take anywhere from one hour up to three business days. Other times, the code is provided in less than 15 minutes. It depends on the make and model of the phone and the original network provider. What - 3 days?
I don't have the phone myself, so I can't say for sure what works or not. But usually, when bootloader is unlocked, you can boot or flash a patched boot.img to obtain root.
I patched the boot.img from the rom dump supplied by @daillcyruz
You should start with the "fastboot boot" command i wrote, as that command won't modify anything permanently.
EDIT:
Any news on that unlock code from Motorola yet?

I imagine you'll be waiting a long time but I may be surprised. Toggling a switch means nothing when it comes to Verizon.
