[Q] U.S SGS3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new to the custom ROM world. I am considering moving to the SG3. I was wondering if all of the current Development available for the SG3 applies to the U.S. version?
Will there be different threads here for the international version and US version for apps and development?
I am just wondering if I will be able to do anything with it when it launches here or if I will be stuck with TouchWiz for a while.
Thanks

There is already a forum area for the different U.S. GSIII versions. None of the development for the International version applies to the U.S./Canadian versions.
The forums for the U.S. phones can be found at the bottom of the XDA Main Forum page.

Thank you very much.

I see the Sprint and AT&T versions, but no forum for the Verizon SG3. Guess it wont matter. Should be the same phone, yes?

No one has a Verizon S3 yet, that is why there is no forum for it. But yes when it boils down to it the US S3 should be just like the Galaxy Nexus in that roms can work for both with some file changes for radio and RIL.

[Q] Info on Tmo GS2

Can anyone tell me what the TMO GS2 will be referred to as in cyanogen lingo? Also will the existing CM7 ROMS for the GS2 work on the TMO version?
I realize that the product hasn't shipped quite yet but just wondered what was going to be involved to get CM7 ported to TMO's version? I assume not much but then again TMO is using a different processor than the rest. Not looking for a hard answer here, just an educated guess as to what was involved based on similar situations.
Nothing for sgs2 international version will work on the tmob version.

Thanks. Would you guess that the tmo port would be pretty straightforward?

Unlike the at&t sgs2 which is almost identical to the int sgs2 porting to the tmob sgs2 is like porting to a whole new phone, so not really straightforward.
As noted the 1.5ghz chip in the tmob sgs2 is not any faster than the int version, so i would lean towards importing an int version, as long as it can run on tmobs 3g bands.

[leak] [rom] ics 4.0 i9220zcpl1

I know this might be old news, but this came out today. A leak to the ICS 4.0 for AT&T GS Note.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500186
Nice for them but IIRC we can't run Gnote roms. Although, this does mean that a version for our device MUST be on the horizon.
It's got the exynos processor, right?
I thought the English version processor was changed to ours?

Yes, it does have Snapdragon.
Im pretty sure that is the leak for the Chinese version of the phone, which is not compatible with the European version. And that has the 1.4 gHz Exynos
i don't understand how there are so many roms leaked for ATT version of s2 and now there is a rom leaked for Note which just got released in US. Why not for t-mobile s2?

All signs point to Samsung not having worked on this device until the finished the international S2.
This is for inter version. On another note xboarder gave his ics rom preview to skyrocket forum and I must say after flashing it I can't wait. Even tho alot of things aren't working it is just beautiful and fast. Link is in our general section. Also works on our device.
You didn't bother to watch the video at the bottom of the first post...did you?

Where did it say it is for AT&T Note? If past history told us anything, AT&T ROMs have different button layouts than internation version. Not to mention the radio chips and CPU/GPU are completely different.
First post is misleading.. and the att sgsii doesn't have any ics leaks.

OP is clueless to say the least. This thread should have been closed instead of moved.

[Q] Main reason for custom roms or the lack there of.

I'm sorry but this question has been bothering me for sometime. I have googled this question but have had no luck. What is the main reason there aren't a lot of custom roms like the international one has? I know our device is newer so I'm just simply asking. This isn't a complaint, ETA or a rant, its simply a question. I know when the atrix came out there were some pseudo roms out until the bootloader became unlocked and then the floodgates opened. Will most of the international roms make it over to this phone eventually. I'm sorry in advanced if this question has been asked before but I really tried to find it first.
the international phone uses a different chipset than this one so no none of the roms will work. the reason we dont have so many roms is because we dont have as many devs as everyone else does (my opinion) but this phone isnt that greatly wanted because of its size so we may never have a lot of roms. the ones we do have are great we just need more themes to go with them. you can port a rom from the skyrocket or t-mobile gs2 if you would like to. im currently running t-mobile ics rom now
Im hoping that theres lot of roms to come but what do i know. The phone is great, not sure why its not popular, yea its big but still sick.

I believe someone tried to flash a skyrocket rom to their note... didn't end well.
The moral of the story is: you can't.
Edit: unless you port it (something not so easy), as smartguy044 said.
You have to change a few files but it works. Im using tmobile rom with everything working great and a theme for the skyrocket

Eh. The main reason is because this phone is so new. It hasn't even been out for 2 months. Thats not long in the dev community. Hell, it took like 6 months just to unlock the bootloader on my atrix and even longer for ROMs. With ICS rolling out and the note gaining traction, you will see an abundance of dev help in the coming months

I agree that the Note is "wanted", which will eventually be great for future rom development. However, the figure is 5 million sold globally since the global version's release, not just the US market.

Better than I expected.
We just had a few new dev's join our team, announcement of upcoming cm9, ics release... i'd say we're in pretty good shape for some solid roms coming very soon.

Galaxy S III (LTE) S4 Development?

Since all the LTE Variants have identical hardware, and radio, would you deem it possible to have interchangeable roms?

That makes me wonder, would all (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, Rogers, etc) the S4, LTE Devs share the same initial repository through Github for development and just branch off with the different Init.d, and radio files?
Is this how it's done for the Galaxy Nexus?

It will greatly reduce the time for getting aosp up and running as many more devs will be working with the same hardware....the only thing that really needs to be different is the device tree...porting from gsm to cdma and vice versa will be easy. Replace vendor folder in system then replace apns-conf.xml with the one for your phone.edit build prop and it should boot.you may have to fix a couple things but hard work is done.like with gnex all kernels should be interchangeable.....gsm kernels work with cdma and vice versa........

And it will, as soon as it starts being delivered. Earliest possible release is for CA on the 20th of June I believe.

It's not a S4 variant if it's a SGS3 LTE.

S4 as in the processor
I expect the North American S4 variants to receive the best developer support to date for an Android phone! As it's been explained, it's basically the exact same phone across all of Canada and the US. And with the powerful processor and 2Gb RAM, we could be in for since amazing ROMs, hacks, tweaks, and more. Can't wait!

Lol I mean dual core processor s4 variant. I hate calling it dual core variant because many people may get offended and also it does not do justice to the hardware.
It's just so much easy to call it s4 variant.

Not all the dual-core/2gb versions are going to be exactly identical hardware.
Docomo version has a digital TV tuner, dual-mode NFC-A/NFC-F but no FM radio.

Agreed. It's been confirmed we are infact getting our own dev forum, the layout of which is still being discussed.
I don't think the S4 version will get as nearly as much development as everyone will go for the superior quad core version. 2GB ram is useless of you have a crippled copy to begin with.

You think that the entire North American market is somehow tiny from a development standpoint?
Just how many people do you expect to pony up for a more expensive international version with more limited functionality on most carriers over here?
Statements like this just confuse the hell out of me. Though I really shouldn't be responding to trolls to begin with...

Galaxy Note: how to upgrade to 4.3 and change modem to work on Wind?

4.3 doesn't exist for the SGH-I717 in fully functioning form yet. The only "release" I've seen was from JamieD and he pointed out right up front that the sound did not work on that ROM. I flashed it and ran it for a while and it was very smooth but not ready yet. Won't be long though so hang in there a little while, there are a lot of us waiting for 4.3!

Ok cool, so what do I do to upgrade to the latest stable ROM and change the modem software so that it works on Wind?
When you say "stable", it can be interpreted in different ways.
The absolute rock-steady stable will be stock-based ROMs, like blackjelly and Padawan.
If you mean "stable enough" for a daily use, you can use any of the 4.2.2 roms. You will have to research and read to find out what is working and what isn't. For me personally, I am using uXylon rom with Uber kernel. Mostly stable, except reboots occasionally.
And you will have to find a modem and flash it separately. I believe you will need to flash a t-mobile modem, but I am not sure. You can search the forum to see if anyone else has done it before. I am sure it was asked before.
thought i would chime in since some people are giving extremely bogus information and should just not comment.
the only difference between the Telus i717d, Rogers i717r, Bell i717m and the ugly one of the bunch the ATT i717*I HATE PHONE BRANDING!* is the bloat loaded onto the phone and the firmware/baseband versions
every single rom in this section will work on every single i717, it may react different on some as not all phones are made identical but in everyday terms they are the same phone...
even the modems are interchangeable between all of them, i run an unlocked att i717 with telus modem, before that i had an i717m and ran telus modem.
