Since all the LTE Variants have identical hardware, and radio, would you deem it possible to have interchangeable roms?
It should be just like the gnex have to change a couple things in build prop and a few files and should be good

That makes me wonder, would all (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, Rogers, etc) the S4, LTE Devs share the same initial repository through Github for development and just branch off with the different Init.d, and radio files?
Is this how it's done for the Galaxy Nexus?

It will greatly reduce the time for getting aosp up and running as many more devs will be working with the same hardware....the only thing that really needs to be different is the device tree...porting from gsm to cdma and vice versa will be easy. Replace vendor folder in system then replace apns-conf.xml with the one for your phone.edit build prop and it should boot.you may have to fix a couple things but hard work is done.like with gnex all kernels should be interchangeable.....gsm kernels work with cdma and vice versa........

S4 as in the processor
I expect the North American S4 variants to receive the best developer support to date for an Android phone! As it's been explained, it's basically the exact same phone across all of Canada and the US. And with the powerful processor and 2Gb RAM, we could be in for since amazing ROMs, hacks, tweaks, and more. Can't wait!

Lol I mean dual core processor s4 variant. I hate calling it dual core variant because many people may get offended and also it does not do justice to the hardware.

Not all the dual-core/2gb versions are going to be exactly identical hardware.
Docomo version has a digital TV tuner, dual-mode NFC-A/NFC-F but no FM radio.

Agreed. It's been confirmed we are infact getting our own dev forum, the layout of which is still being discussed.
I don't think the S4 version will get as nearly as much development as everyone will go for the superior quad core version. 2GB ram is useless of you have a crippled copy to begin with.

You think that the entire North American market is somehow tiny from a development standpoint?
Just how many people do you expect to pony up for a more expensive international version with more limited functionality on most carriers over here?
Statements like this just confuse the hell out of me. Though I really shouldn't be responding to trolls to begin with...

Its 1.5 because of snapdragon 3 chipset and its weaker BTW

Clock speed doesn't really matter
exynos 4210(1.2 Ghz) is better than snapdragon 3(1.5 Ghz)
Just google search for it
You will get 1.5 ghz(weaker one with less dev) on at&t
From t-mob you will get epic touch 4g(same as international in hardware but different buttons and different section)
So its better to buy i9100 international unlocked sgs2 if you care about development

Will the issues with RIL keep us from getting AOSP ROMs on this device or is it something that Devs can overcome?
Sorry for the noobish question, but I've been reading this may be an issue that can't be solved.
I don't think this will be a problem if developers makes aosp for ICS and not for jellybean. This is a big problem for Resound aosp since developers wanted to fix RIL for ICS aosp but we still haven't gotten ICS officially and HTC never released ICS source. Plus side is Samsung released their source for gs3 on att and T-Mobile so we sld see it soon for verizon

I'm confused though, I thought the RILs were only a problem when devices shifted from Gingerbread to ICS due to how different they are. I would imagine actual hardware drivers are probably the same between ICS and JB, but I could be wrong.

They only released kernel source. Not the ril, from what I have seen. With the exception of the gnexus which we have the source for, no Samsung device has working aosp and 4g on Verizon. That's not saying we won't try, but I wouldn't expect cm9 this week...

With all the variations we have of this device on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mo and Verizon utilizing the same chipset there is a definitely a possibility RIL will be cracked. I would imagine once it is figured out for a device on a specific carrier, it would be due time until that fix is ported to others.
With all the Devs I see who have picked up this device I have faith RIL will be cracked but obviously it will take time.
Pardon my ignorance of exactly how RIL works, but how different is each one for each carrier variation on a phone like this? Say someone in the Sprint community actually does the low-level dirty work and reverse-engineers their RIL line-by-line in smali. What would that mean for us? How different is a Sprint CDMA radio interface from a Verizon one on the same SoC? Obviously LTE would be a different story.
With the incredible number of people that are about to be behind this flagship phone, I have no doubt the RIL issue will be overcome regardless. This ain't no Droid Charge.

No, this is more or less apprpriate for this forum, during launch people would like to be able to see the status of development right away.
So you can take your 31 posts and go whine somewhere else.
I am going to be returning my iPad to get this phone outright. It has better get CM9 or AOKP.
I do wonder though concerning the LTE side how different the actual coding is per the different carriers. So like said before, for LTE, if someone cracked sprints, or AT&T's LTE coding, if it could be translated to Verizon.
Tell me if I am wrong, but don't all three carriers have identical phone hardware? All three have the same LTE chips, just set to run on different freq bands?
Forgive me if I sound skeptical, but why would the S3 be special?
Were the Strato and Charge simply not popular enough to get a healthy dev scene for RIL cracking?

No, cause they were all basically rebadged phones. Charge was essentially a fascinate with 4g.

Most I've had to worry about is changing all the European units/measurements/dates to be more American.
Here's a checklist:

I for one welcome a Task650 AOSP HTC One release
Hi, Tech Guys here!
I don't know if I'm posting in the correct category but I thought it would be the best way to decide here which device to buy. Yes, I've looked on various sites and reviews for the best mobile device out there. Surely, most of them would suggest any one of the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and Xperia Z. Well, I've not found any review considering the development of the devices and I don't think I'd. Thus, I decided to post a thread here on XDA where I can easily get recommendation for it and can have my priorities considered by the techies here. At the moment, I own a Samsung Galaxy S II. The only reason I still love it is the continuous development for it. So, my kind request to all of you here is to help me decide the best phone out there - the budget is INR 40,000 ($ 800). Here are the priorities (decreasing order):
Obviously, Android! I don't want restrictions for using my own device. I want the possibility to tweak the settings. I want Custom ROMS, Apps or you can say everything what this site is made for.
The best development support - I think Samsung and Google are the best for it, no?
Battery Backup. It's fine if I can improve it noticeably with tweaks.
Storage
Hell outta performance. I was very disappointed for the reviews that said though having the best performance, S4 noticeably lags a much.
Screen with good contrast and colors. Size also matters.
I don't want to pay much for bloat.
I don't know why my heart is not letting me go against the S4. But I can make the same understand if I've your points here.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone.
I've also added a poll to vote for your choice.
s4 is great but one x is better suited for developing Android roms. Many roms are available for one x but s4 doesn't even have a official cyanogen

Well I have had a recent dealings with some of the devices from India and to be honest if it is for Development you may end up importing. Avoid Micromax and any of the OEM that import from China. Maybe the S3 maybe a good one or the S4 If the Nexus line is not available to you. Oppo Is also working hard with developers.

It is possible to port N7100 over to us and add in files to get lte working. @lacoursiere18 ported an N7100 based version of Moon ROM to our phone that had working LTE if I remember correctly.

dam i am so excited. I was waiting for this... yes!
I gave up my note 3 and stayed with note 2 during that verizon weekend for upgrades and keeping unlimited because i knew 4.3 is coming to the note 2 soon. (did order a iphone 5s to sell ^-^ wish me luck of it going through without any problems) I hope they devs here will get us going sooner than verizon. Blah what am i saying... the devs will definitely get us going before verizon even contemplates it! Cant wait.

I wonder if this means that TW ROM developers will keep at it, seems like most of them have stopped updating. Maybe not, considering the Note 3 release...argh.

There's been a number of TW ROMs that have been updated recently like JellyBeans and Alliance. Plus there's also Nephilim as well. Not to mention the continued dev work being done on 4.3 AOSP as well such as CM, AOKP, and Vanir for instance. We're far from dead on this device.
Only way I want 4.3 is stock I just want it now!! But I guess im weird I spent years on CM on the og droid and on my gnex but I guess it just got to be too much for me.

VRAMC3 has been out since May, most of the ROMs were updated to it by June. That's almost 4 full months of porting, updating and bug fixing. At this point, there is really nothing left to do with what we have outside of minor updates on the TW side. There hasn't really been anything released on the software side on the international model either in several months, so it's not like we can pull in fixes from them either. When 4.3 is finally released, there will be a lot of activity again as everything is updated to the latest software.
Unfortunately the S Pen features from the Note 3 don't seem to be included. Maybe they'll release later as a premium suite? Hope so
