I think I bricked my phone, please help! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was going through the Toolkit/Odin trying to root...I'm not sure where it went wrong, but when the phone tries to boot, it shows the Samsung logo for a split second before going back off. I am able to get to Download mode, but Recovery Mode does the same thing. Any help is appreciated!

If you can get to download mode, have you tried flashing your countries stock firmware through odin?

If you can get into download mode, try flashing stock firmware to your device using Odin.
You can find stock firmware here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
If after you flash the firmware you are having trouble booting into android, stuck at splash screen etc. Then boot into stock recovery (Vol up + Home + Power) and do a factory reset.

Thanks for the replies...this for a US phone (AT&T), and I was unable to find the stock firmware in that thread.

does cf-root even work with the american version of the S3? that might be your issue

I think that is the cause of the initial problem right there. CF Root is only for the international versions right now. I didn't realize that OP had an ATT version.

I was afraid of that. Is there any way of getting it to at least boot at this stage? I can wait on rooting it if I could just get it back to factory.

I think you will need source the stock ATT firmware and flash that via Odin to get yourself completely back to stock. You might want to pose this question in the ATT SGS3 forum that they created yesterday. I see that there is some activity over there in regards to system dumps etc.
Here is the link to the ATT specific thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1629

I don't even think you can flash any of the international firmware to try and fix it but I might be wrong

You hawe section for ATT SGS3 in XDA search ther for firmware

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Looks like I'll have to wait until US stock firmware is available.

[Q] How bad is my Brick

Hi All.
So, i was trying to change my csc today, and screwed the pooch royally. I knew that was happening when i went to flash it on mobile odin, and i saw in the litttle white text: Kernel clearing, flashing... And I didnt have a kernel selected....
ANYWAY, now i have a nice paperweight, made by samsung. Is this a soft brick that I can fix using this link?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458&highlight=brick
Or is it something more sinister? Basically, do I need to start looking for a new phone? Is it possible to fix it?
Can you still get into download mode? If you can, flash stock kernel in download mode using ODIN. If it still cannot boot after kernel flash, you will need to flash the stock firmware again.

Regarding the firmware you installed, there are something you need to read and understand the risk of using it.
Check this and this. Meanwhile before you do anything, DO NOT wipe data/factory reset your phone.
I would suggest you to install other firmware that are considered safe, as soon as possible. Avoid using the recovery mode.

Yes, after a successful flash, let it boot up completely, backup everything in your phone (contacts, sms, calendar, etc). Make sure you are already using a safe kernel (4.0.3 for example), power down your phone, press and hold Vol Up + Home + Power button together to boot into recovery mode, do a factory reset, then reboot normally. Now it should fix the random shut down.
Edit: You will lose all your apps, contacts, sms, but not musics, photo & stuff inside internal storage if you do a factory reset, so make sure you backup before proceeding.
Take care
It worked! Thanks!
Now I have a different problem, it seems. Whenever people text me, the message is blank. Either I have weird friends, or something else is going on. Any ideas?

You did some **** that you shouldn't have done without reading first. If you had done any damn research you would know why the i9100 screen pops up. And it isn't because your phone thinks its an i9100.

No one can help you unless you provide enough useful information about what you have done. You should have read and learned enough to avoid making a mistake in the first place, but if you will tell us what you have done, maybe you'll get some help. What exactly did you flash with Odin? Provide a link to it? You did not get the warning on boot from flashing stock. What method did you use to try to enter download mode? To try to enter Recovery?

That's not a galaxys2root produced file. That is the straight stock Kies file which they downloaded from SamFirmware or Samsung Updates. That didn't cause the problem.
You say you can now not enter either download mode or recovery?
Don't do a wipe data with that installed if you do get into recovery!

I'm not sure why your phone is having problems. You should be able to just flash stock and start over. If it were my phone, I would flash UCKH7 stock plus root, install a Gingerbread custom kernel, and then pick a firmware from the development forum. If you choose to follow that path, be sure to open the Oden window first before putting your phone into download mode. If you need additional information, there is plenty of help in the guides and threads linked in my signature.

Did you flash a custom kernel and then flash a new rom?

Bricked my phone. help? maybe? please?

So, today I updated my phone to ICS and rooted my phone and just like a little kid i started playing with things and long story short I'm pretty sure I bricked it. I think what happened just before I think it bricked is that I was downloading and installing a ROM from ROM Manager. It went through the whole start up process(asking for gmail for syncing and all that nonsense) and when i tried to download another app from the google store i got a "error with purchasing" or something like that so i restored all the info and stuff i had on ROM manager and titanium back up and tried it again. no luck. I tried going for factory reset but it didn't work(all three ways). So i panicked and went to superuser and clicked the unroot choice. Really stupid choice since now i can't use any of the apps to get into bootload. Now I can't get to recovery, bootload, or any other of those things even with hardware.
So in summary here are the symptoms:
1. can't get into any other modes (recovery, bootload, etc.)
2. Get the error "Error processing purchase.[DF-BPA-13]" when trying to download something off google play.
3. Charges extremely Slow.
4. Phone works normally. goes through normal boot. I can text, browse, do all standard functions.
5. When turning off the phone it gets hung up at goodbye.
6. Can't perform hard resets.
More information:
Model Number: SGH-T989
Android Version: 4.03
Please Help! I'm begging you! and if you need more information just let me know. and one thought I would have in fixing it is using a USB jig. But i wouldn't know what to do once I got back into the other modes.
you can search how to fix it here on xda, but maybe this will give you a lead http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805474
hope you get it fixed!
Right well there is 2 things you can do:
1) use a USB jig and get into download mode, and then flash a stock ROM
2) Do an adb restart into recovery using android SDK
Let me know if it work?

Are you able to get into recovery mode still? For download mode make sure your holding down the correct key combination to get into download mode. You can also try using a USB Download jig which you can get from here, which when plugged into the phone will force the phone into download mode. As a fair warning the download jig's don't usually work with newer model phones but for a couple bucks it's worth a try. Let me know if you still have questions.
Motherboard dead?
Sorry to invade this post. I would just like to have confirmation on my device and it's pretty similar to what is found here. The only way I can access download mode is by pressing Q+Power and then adding the battery. Odin connects to everything, I can even flash the firmware from Bell for my Galaxy gt-i5510M and it PASS. But I can't still power it up, is the motherboard or something similar dead?
Thanks

If your device can still access download mode and Odin can successfully connect to your device an flash the firmware your device's motherboard is not dead. Try re-flashing the firmware to your device and checking auto-reboot option in Odin this way when the firmware finishes flashing the device will automatically reboot and hopefully power on then.
Thanks for the fast answer, you've been answering 3 people back on this thread, impressive.
Unfortunately I made sure of that, the auto reboot was checked but it doesn't reboot the device. I wanted to put a screenshot but I didn't realize you need around 10 posts to be able to post outside links. I've been looking through xda for a while but never posting.
I'm used to adb, so Odin is a bit new I have to admit. I've put the ops file, callisto in this case, in the appropriate ops , and then the One Package file I got from samfirmware "I5510UGKC5_I5510BMCKC5_BMC". Is there something else I could flash? It wouldn't be like some other phones where I could put down a Custom Recovery, go back to stock, etc. ?

To clarify did you put the firmware in the correct slot in Odin (PDA slot in this case) when flashing? Also double check your flashing the correct firmware for your device, as that could also be part of the problem.
Well you figured some things that were wrong. I was putting it in the one package slot. So I tried in the PDA slot, but it said "Invalid Image Type". From the sticker inside the battery compartment, it does say it's the GT-I5510M, so the 551 from Bell Canada it seems. But it's not easy to find a firmware for it, and the only one I found is at sammobile. There's plenty others under GT-I5510, but they're all European.
Any idea what I could use instead? The full name of the firmware I have is: "I5510UGKC5_BMCKC5_HOMEDOWNLOAD_TEST.tar" or "I5510UGKC5_I5510BMCKC5_BMC.zip" for the zip.
Thanks a lot for following this.

Even you have to put the phone in Download mode?
Edit: I tried the same and it still does not work :/
I tried again, but this time I ran the Odin as administrator. I passed thru NAND Write but in the end of all process it says FAIL and brick my phone.
I am trying to flash this file: G925IDVU1AOD1_G925IZTO1AOD1_G925IDVU1AOD1_HOME.tar.md5
You can see the issue attached:
you fail because you need a pit file..I can flash my normal firmware without a problem..but if I try a other one for example a provider one..it fails..for that we need the pit..and for that we need root..to extract it from the phone..and I don't won't to root ATM..
So how can I fix the device?
I tryng to use the Smart Switch PC but my device does not appear in the list to recovery emergency

I've had this problem before, are you planning on rooting as well?

No, I just want to change the firmware version because the version that came with the phone does not have Portuguese as all language. The revice was 100% stock, just tried to flash another country firmware thru Odin and it has been bricked.

O.k the only way I know around this without finding your original firmware and flashing that, is to:
flash the firmware again, and wait until it fails again,
then hold vol down + power + home to get it to restart in to download mode again but keep odin open,
then flash CF autoroot .
then wait for the phone to reboot and it will install root then it will restart two more times on it own then should boot into the O.S.
(i take no responsibility if you mess up you device though but I have done this on more than one occasion and it always works for me)
I expect you could probably do this will another recovery(stock/twrp) instead of the CF autoroot one but have yet to try.
but you probably will be better off finding original firmware but you will not have Portuguese as you want.
Good luck with trying to fix your device

according to this you can use 925F version but I can not confirm my self as i don't have the device, If you don't mind rooting and tripping knox, I don't think you can do much more harm

Hey there, I had a similar problem, what I did was re-install the Samsung drivers and reboot the computer also I turned off my lock screen and activation on the phone. Between the two of those things it allowed ODIN to have success.

I also went through this problem too, and this helped thank you
But also for another phone I had to flash using a different computer for this to work.

Maybe you can try each of the stock versions until you get the right one for your particular device. Also maybe a model number would help someone on here to identify what version you have, I don't know just throwing that out there.
My phone is G925i, and in the back says that it is made in Yateley, UK
Wich firmware you think I can try to flash?
I was trying the G925IDVU1AOD1_G925IZTO1AOD1_G925IDVU1AOD1 and then the phone has bee bricked.

I can't link to the page I go to because of my noob post count but its samsung-updates in google. There is a whole section with various G925i versions I'm sure you'll find it there.
