Hello. I'm kinda new to all this android scene sooo have few questions. Updated mine XS via Flashtool, but stuck on rooting it .
When i access fastboot toolbox, and under "Select kernel to flash" select "recovery-nozomi.img" i get an error. Here's the log..

What i'm doing wrong?
Also i found prerooted ICS for my XS, but it's .img format. When i was updating i updated with ".ftf" file . How do i install that ".img" ? (via fastboot toolbox by selecting "select system to Flash" ??)
Thank you
Follow the instructions in this thread:-

I did the ftf route then manually rooted.
Good Luck.
@op, Is your bootloader unlocked?

I think I'll try and help some more here, as sometimes the devs assume everyone is as sharp as they are!
This is the idiots guide, forgive me if I'm stating the obvious!
Ok, make sure you have the latest version of Flashtool installed, 0.8.6.0 is the latest I believe.
Download and copy the 6.1.a.0.452 ftf file to the firmwares folder of wherever you installed flashtool, mine is c:/Flashtool/firmwares.
Now, switch off the phone... Wait 20 seconds or so.
Whilst pressing the volume down button, connect the usb.
You should, if your drivers are installed correctly see device connected in flash mode appear in the window. The phones LED will be green.
Click the lightining flash button.
Select Flash Mode.
You will see the file listed in the 'select a firmware' window; select it.
If you do not wish to wipe data, then unselect the wipe data checkbox, I suggest you do wipe, click OK.
Flashtool now preps itself and some seconds later flashing should commence.
I've been re-faslhing mine as I write this, so I know it works.
Now, rooting... You will need an unlocked bootloader, assuming you have, if you have not, then check out the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527159
You may or may not be able to unlock the bootloader, depends who the provider/supplier was. Mine was from phones4u and was a generic unbranded unit.
Once, you have unlocked the bootloader then you can procede to rooting the phone.
I am assuming here that you have downloaded the following files:
CWM-SuperSU-v0.92.zip
kernel.rar
recovery-nozomi.img
You will also have installed Fastboot, and added it to your windows paths.
First things first, browse your Xperia from Filebrowser, and copy the file "CWM-SuperSU-v0.92.zip" to the root folder.
In Windows, browse to the folder containing the .img file and the extracted kernel.sin file. Launch a command prompt from that folder, do this by holding the shft key down when you right mouse and select 'open command window here'.
Now, if you have done your paths correctly etc, type fastboot, and you will get a list of the command options, this is just to prove your paths!
Type 'fastboot flash boot recovery-nozami.img'
You will get waiting for device...
Phone off, wait 20 seconds or so...
holding volume UP key, connect usb, device will flash.
Now, unplug the usb and power up the phone, you will see a menu, using the vol keys, up and down, 'select install zip from sdcard' using the camera button to select.
then select 'choose zip file from SD card'
You should see the 'CWM-SuperSU-v0.92.zip' we copied earlier at the bottom of the list, select it.
It should now have a little list with no's and a yes, so up/dpwn to the yes with the option to install and select.
That should install correctly, mine just has, and we are almost there.
In little menu at the top, select 'go back' and you will see an option to 'reboot system', do not select it yet!
Go back to your windows prompt, and type
Type 'fastboot flash boot kernel.sin'
Now back to the phone, and insert the usb cable... press the camera button and immediately press volume up, LED will turn blue. Now, this is where it may just be my PC, but what I need to do now, is hit return on the pc and it says Waiting for device, I quickly unplug the usb, and plug it back in, and it flashes the kernel.sin file.
The trick is in the 'reboot system' and getting the vol up timing right to enter the fastboot mode.
That's the way I've done it, and it all works perfectly. Hope it helps you.
first you need to unlock bootloader which MAY void your warranty, than you have to instal custom KERNEL, doomlord have wonderful kernel.
Than over kernel recovery flash pre rooted image.
I was not aware that the ICS ftf was not an official sony release; if it is signed by Sony, you do not need an unlocked bootloader.
Custom Kernel for ICS??? Since last night?

What you are doing above is trying to root, which for now needs a unlocked bootloader to do. The official firmware itself is signed so it's not an issue, but flashing recovery and switching out kernels is, and won't be allowed on a locked bootloader.
@electrash:
Doom hasn't built a kernel for ICS yet, right? It's not a good idea to flash a GB kernel over ICS, its a good way to break things :/.

Which his exactly what I wrote in my instructions; as I said, he can blow ICS, he may or may not be able to root.
I'm not trying to do anything... I've already done it.

marjohn56, excellent instructions, thank you! As far as I saw this one is the only one that describes the process of flashing SU inside recovery. Thanks a lot!
The only thing I can add is that you may turn off your phone once SuperSU was installed. The phone will just not power on the actual system until kernel.sin will be flashed, it will be just booted to recovery every time. So once phone was turned off, just hold the volume up button and plug in the USB cable, then flash kernel.sin as described. The process of flashing kernel.sin is the same as flashing nozomi-recovery, from fastboot point of view. What we're doing is just putting recovery image to root the device and then putting kernel image back to work normally with the system.
Correct me if I'm wrong...

Got proper fastboot drivers installed?
Try removing spaces from the filename, or just rename it to boot.img and then try again.
Try these, will try to think more.
how to know that proper fastboot driver is installed or not??
have tried renaming the file to "boot.img' but the same result

after connecting in fastboot mode my pc is saying in the taskbar "eject s1fastboot" so i think it's installed.
don't know what is wrong. really feeling frustrated
Did some research on Google, couldn't find solution to this, neither can I think anything more.
Phone is in fastboot mode(blue LED), bootloader is unlocked...I can't see the problem.
Anyone else, that would have ideas?

anyone else??
looking at the log, the kernel that u try to flash had a space in its name isnt it?
Code:
boot_smultron_rc3_final (2).img
remove the space, eg just rename it as
Code:
boot.img
and try again.
fastboot and adb run in cmd. filename must not contain any space in it, mandatory.
i've tried with boot.img with flashtool. the output was same. how to install with cmd ???
ummm seems like u didnt understand what i'm trying to say :/
forget about it.
use this instead

Hey All,
The phone is a UK Xperia S on 6.1.4.453 (White 32GB), PC is Win7 64Bit
Rooted OK
rebooted OK
bootloader unlock using the sony appoved process and that completed ok.
rebooted OK
Used the fastboot method to a install the CWM recovery-nozomi.img which also appeared to work OK
Reboot took me straight into the CWM recovery menu. Version at the top says 5.5.0.4
I tried a reboot at this point before I did anything else to make sure it would still boot normally but it just returned me to the CWM recovery menu and now my troubles begin...
I tried a shutdown (power+up until 3 vibrates) and it shutdown OK. Powering it on again just returns me to the recovery menu.
CWM will not allow me to use "Mount USB" due to an error (below) so I can't transfer a ROM
E:unable to open ums lunfile (file or directory not found)
I followed the flashtool instructions and I've run the "flashtool-drivers" a few times now but it still complains with the following...
04/058/2012 23:58:19 - INFO - <- This level is successfully initialized

I've already rebooted the PC a few times and tried different USB ports.
I've spent all night reading and googles and reading and googling and just getting the same "You didn't install the drivers" advice, but I've definitely installed
Can anyone help me resolve this one please?
Additional info. I had to download the 64bit drivers to get fastboot to work and I had to reboot the PC
Thanks all,
mub
install sdk or pda.net
Install it manually with device manager point it to the folder with the drivers.

Yea it'll be your pc being a ****. As all you need to do is flash a rom with kernel excluded.
What kernel did you flash for cwm?

I'll give the anual driver install a go.
It's interesting that you mention the kernael, when I did the CWM install it did not instruct me to install a new kernel.
Here is the instructions I used. http://www.android.gs/install-clockworkmod-recovery-sony-xperia-s/

Yey, got flashmode working.
I used the win 7 device manage tweak to sure all hardware (including uplugged items) and forcably removed all the sony / xperia related bits. Then I installed the drivers again.
The other thing I did was look at the order I ran the flashing process. Instead of waiting for the "now attached your phone" window to appear I just attached using the Flashmode process (plugin with Down held) and when flashtool said it could see a device that was in flashmode I then hit the "flash" bottom, hit the OK's as prompted and bingo it stayed in flashmode and now my phone is back.
Thanks for everyones input.
/mub
Just thought I should add this cause I had the same problem but fixed it. When you try to install the flash tool drivers from the "drivers" folder, look to the very bottom of the list of drivers to install. There should be two, "Flash tool" driver and "fast boot" driver. I installed those two along with the drivers for my phone and the problem went away.
If anybody could help............

OK, I have a XTZ WiFi only (SGP311) which ran on stock with the latest official OTA (4.2.2 I think it was?)
Basically, the thing is completely unmodified with the exception of using permanent root through vroom utility. No custom recovery, nothing. (I am not sure if rooting via vroom also unloks the bootloader) Now yesterday, I restored some apps/data through Titaniumbackup and when rebooting the device after that things went sideways.
When turning on I just get up to the colormorphing ribbon animation which halts after a few seconds and then cycles the tablet into another reboot. I have searched up and down, figuring I'd just hardware reset the thing but there really is no physical reset buton, eh?
How do I get my Tablet reset back to factory? Isn't there some kind of Sony bootloader (like HBOOT on HTC) which one could use to reset it?
I seem to be able to get it into fastboot mode, at least I get a reply for the command "fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version" (which is 0.5). How could I wipe/factory reset from here? Or can I just flash a recovery, even if unsure if bootloader is locked/unlocked? Or would I rather flash a FTF from here? Whats my best course of action?
Any input greatly appreciated

dont worry, had bricked mines too, followed the following steps and got it back woking ........
1.get a stock firmware (As an FTF file), and get sonyericsson Flashtool.
2.Turn off the device (hold volume up, and power, for about ten seconds, until you see the LED flash three times). The device is now off. Hold down the "volume down" button, and plug in the USB connection to your computer. The LED should turn green, and the S1boot device should appear.
3.You can now flash the device back to Sony stock using the flashtool
4. pick the firmware you downloaded (FTF FILE)....... and flash it ..... ALL DONE !!!
please let us know if you fixed it .....
OK, thanks I will try that. I have looked into that but as of now I could not find a localized version. Mine is from Germany, and all I find is Japan and US versions, so is there no European / Euro/MiddleEast (EMEA) version at all? Can I just use the most recent Japanese one and it will have all languages available?
I will check out the flashtool now, maybe I can just issue a data/cache wipe and start fresh with the already existing firmware? That would be a good feature, skipping potential problems by using the wrong / incompatible FTF I guess.
Thanks so far.
no problem at all ....

the best solution i would recommend you right now would be the following:-
1. download and install the official sony flash tool known as EMMA , link is :
http://developer.sonymobile.com/services/flash-tool/how-to-download-and-install-the-flash-tool/
2. after installing it, follow the instructions to flash the FTF file
(it will download and flash the GLOBAL UNBRANDED firmware, which will contain all various languages)
3.after installing it, your tablet will be running stock 4.2.2 ....... no wories at all
always keep in mind that it is really hard to brick a sony device, it is always recoverable !!!

Oh wow, you are great, thanks for the effort on your side. Unfortunately when I was fiddling with the tablet XDA took its server switch downtime and I missed the post until now.
However, fortunately I was not even forced to go the whole nine yards. After realizing that I would not quite get anywhere until I took the plunge and officially unlocked my bootloader. Once I had that done I was immediately able to issue a cache/data partition wipe command via fastboot command line. At that point I just had a brandnew out of the box state and restored my stuff from there without fiddling with FTF etc at all.
Thanks for your great help anyway. May I just bother you with one more question? Now that the glove dropped and the bootloader is open I might as well go for a decent recovery. However I am at a total loss when chosing one. There is CWM and TWRP, one is said to be buggy (no recovery throuch volume key power on) sometimes it says its for sgp321 and not the WiFI only, then someone claims the opposite.
Could you please point me to any of those recoverys, fully functional on a SGP311 and conveniently flashable via adb/fastboot? I am not familiar with flashtool and would hate to screw things up with a wrong click. The sdk command line tools I have more familiarity with... Also, its just about recovery for nandroid with me, no desire to run a custom ROM or CM 10/11 or something.
Thamks a lot and have a good one!

Hello Doomlord,
i hope you can help me out. i have tried to use your method "flash old kernel, to root 2.67".
the log of flashtool shows me that the tablet can't reboot, because it still in "flashmode".
in the log you can see i tried again the new kernel with the hope that everything will go right - but without luck.

Bricked device
Hi, I am in a similar situation. I have an XTZ SGP311 which is completely stock apart from rooted with the vroot tool. I stupidly tried to change fonts with a font installer from the Play store, and when I rebooted the tablet it cycles between the Sony and Xperia screens. I am trying to unlock the bootloader to restore with EMMA. The EMMA tool recognises the tablet when I connect it in Fastboot mode. But when I try the fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version command I just get <waiting for device>
Can anyone give any advice on what I can try next to unbrick my XTZ?

dont worry, had bricked mines too, followed the following steps and got it back woking ........

Hold VOL+Power for 10 sec to switch it off. Then reflash with Flashtool 0.9.18.6 or restore with xperia-companion.
I tried this version of Flashtool and also the newer one, with no success.
I'm trying now a downgrade for 10.6.A.0.454 to see if works. Like it's a softbrick, I can get in the flashmode, turn off and even the Sony Companion does execute the repair update for the latest but when I turn on, it shows the Sony Xperia screen then black screen and hangs like that forever.
All of this with 100% battery full.
Now I'm willing to sacrifice a goat or a bigger animal to achieve success

Found a solution.
Just flashed using Flashtool 0.9.18.6 and downgrade to SGP311_10.4.1.B.0.109_CE
https://service-gsm.net/Sony/Xperia/Firmwares/SGP311_10.4.1.B.0.109_CE.rar/
It's working flawlessly

This may related to kernel problem. I think I used the wrong one.(Fast boot is accessible)
today i tried to install lollipop on my D6503 Z2 device running 17.xxxxxx (I cant remember and i cant turn my phone on now)
i downloaded the file from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/stock-d6503-23-1-0-690-bal-rooted-t3057150
however, i cant flash the zip file since i cannot get in to recovery mode. (when ever i try to reboot into recovery mode it just boot into normal stock rom) So i tried installing TWRP from the play store app "TWRP Manager" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jmz.soft.twrpmanager&hl=en but it failed. I remember it said something like "the installation has failed. Either you have already install custom recovery or there might be some other problems. Do you want to reboot in recovery mode?" I clicked "yes" then it booted into stock rom again. After failing I went into TWRP website and manually download the latest version of TWRO 2.8.6.0 on this website http://dl.twrp.me/sirius/ and proceed to download flashtool form www.flashtool.net/ .
I conected my device and install dual boot recovery "Z2-lockeddualrecovery2.8.3-RELEASE.installer". I choose no. 3 first (which nothing happened) and then i choose no. 1. Its said successful. I tried to reboot again which didn't change anything.
Then I opened the flashtool i downloaded and get into fastboot mode( since flash mode cant flash the img file for me. or I just don't know how to do it). In fast boot option I clicked "reboot into fastboot mode via ADB" every went fine I got the blue light with black screen. Then I clicked "select Kernel to Flash" which is my TWRP recovery. After it is done, I tried to reboot back to stock however after the sony logo is shown the screen went dark and I couldn't do anything beside pressing volume up and power to force shut down. I rebooted and nothing changes.
In short
-I tried to install lollipop pre rooted on my Z2
-Couldn't instal. I can't reboot into recovery mode
-try to manually install TWRP by downloading from its website and flash in fastboot mode (i choose "select Kernel to Flash")
-Now I cannot boot my device back to stock. After the sony is shown, the screen went black. I need to forced shutdown.
-Just realized that my kernel version changed to 3.4.0cyanogenmod
-I probably flashed the wrong kernel
-I cannot get into recovery mode
-i did do a TWRP back up
Btw here is my log when trying to flash the TWRP

That surely will do the trick. I personally had the same problem years back, and having had my first Sony Xperia phone, I did manage to get over it. What I did practically is detailed in that link posted by @o0Matt0o , today I see someone with same problem and I can imagine the frustration, because I did too.
Good luck friend.

I've 'bricked' my phones many times. I know it frustrating. But Xperias are so easy to fix.
The best thing about a brick is you learn how to fix it.

Sure friend, just talking about first time experience and that's what he's going through right now. You and I are now conversant with fixing these easily because it's not our first time.

Hi. My D6503 device shuted down suddenly and try to open you see writing up SONY down XPERIA on screen and does not go forward. i did this things:
1) i did hard reset. (volume down+power and volume up+power and push the red button until 3 times vibration)
2)i installed pc companion and used.
3) i used flashtool to flash orginal firmware to device but when it is flushing there is writing "reading device information" and does not go forward.
i think that every thing, every details is right that i did about this 3 solution. but it is not fixed.
i am not sure my device usb debuggin is enabled and is unlocked bootloader. i could not learn that because device does not open.
i have no idea how can fix that. i read a lot of things about that but i could not find. can you help me please? thanks
Please post log in flashtool when your plug in your device to pc

Or maybe you have a bad cable ..
Or try to flash preroot frimware via twrp recovery then do factory reset

i waited for 1-2 hours after the writing "reading device information" but nothings happen.
i also installed the Emma but when i try to connect Emma (turned of +volume down+usb plug in) i can not connect, nothings happen.
i installed drivers into drivers folder after flashtool was installed and when i attach the device (turn off, volume down) with usb to computer it was defined "SOMC Flash Device" below the device manager.
i used original cable but after your post i tried another cable unfortunately does not work. i searched how can i flash pre rooted firmware , i realized that you have to install twrp. but i can not find how is it install with flashtool. could you help me how can i install twrp with flashtool?

Download latest androplus kernel, unpack the boot.img, then just flash the boot.img though flashtool via fastboot mode, to boot to recovery, turn on your device and when the led turn on, pres volume down and that's your twrp ..

The lastest androplus kernel is v71, but that's okay .. Maybe that's error caused by your computer have two fastboot binary, one in flashtool, and one in other tool (example in minimal adb fastboot tool), if your machine have more than one fastboot, you can't use the fastboot to flash anything

i used another pc today and i just installed only flashtool not another program and i installed drivers into flashtool. i did eveything from the beginning and the same result i have. also flushing kernel. i guess usb debugging is disable so i can not do anything.
i can not lock bootloader because of usb debugging is disable. i can not flash the kernel because of bootloader locked.
if usb debugging is disable how can i recover?
