To get to the point, people DON'T UPDATE YOUR VIBRANTS and T-MOBILE HANDLES THE ISSUE HORRIBLY! Obviously this is not a universal problem, but if you do happen to be one of the lucky ones that bricks their phone with the update there is no saving it (at least with the help of T-mobile).
I just got off of the phone with tech support and they were less than helpful. After the regular punching in numbers, talking to two different people, and trying to re-boots that everyone with half a brain have tried, they informed me that they would replace the phone but I had to PAY for shipping. While I realize this is a normal policy when it comes to random malfunctions, which may or may not have been the users fault, this is absolutely ridiculous when the problem is 100% their fault. Seriously, T-mobile ships a top of the line phone that has some major flaws and inactivated software (media hub), then breaks the phone with it's official update, and somehow this is MY responsibility to pay to get fixed? The rep even asked if I at this point wanted to add insurance so next time I wouldn't have to pay for shipping and if I wanted to pay extra for expedited shipping! They were trying to make an add-on sale while fixing an issue THEY caused!
That's not even the end of it, because I was so irritated they sent me to a "loyalty specialist" (who sounded like a used car salesman). He rambled on about how he would waive the shipping fee (he made it sound like he just saved my first born child). I told him I appreciated that but it didn't fix the fact that T-Mobile was not handling the issue well. When a large number of phones break from an issue originating from the provider they should either 1) have re-furbished phones (or even set aside new phones if necessary) to replace these broken phones as they come up or 2) offer free over night shipping of the replacement phone. He told me that these options were too expensive for T-Mobile, and that if I like I could sign up for either of their two insurance plans, as they would allow me to do an in-store replacement (he later noted that one of them was only available within the first 14 days of owning the phone...). I couldn't believe they were trying to another add-on sale! The best part being, I later called around to all my local T-Mobile owned stores and none of them have the Vibrant available for in-store replacement (and never have).
So the Cliff-Notes of my rant:
1) DON'T UPDATE YOUR VIBRANT
2) If you did brick your phone, make sure to complain and they should refund the ridiculous shipping charge
3) If you don't own a Vibrant and are thinking about it consider the following (Don't let it stop you, just consider it):
- Still on 2.1, when Nexus One has been on 2.2 for months (and the Galaxy S 2.2 official ROM has been leaked so it does exist in some form.) => Meaning updates are super scarce and extremely late.
- T-Mobile is selling a good phone with many flaws, and their first attempt to fix it bricked many phones (do a google search I am not the only one).
- While it may be better than other companies, T-Mobiles customer service is FAR from flawless
P.S. My phone was completely stock (so please don't mention how I did this with a lag fix, etc.). I waited at least 15 mins before I pulled the battery, before which I had noted the T-Mobile sound starting without the animation (seems like a timing issue or something). And finally, I realize this is a duplicate post to many others but I want people to find this info (not be at the bottom of a really long thread) to get the word out how T-Mobile deals with their errors.
I hate when people mess with their phones then get angry at a company for "breaking" their phone. Im running stock rom with root and also got bricked, but, I manned up and knew I was in the wrong and accepted what happened. I didn't put the blame on TMo, because completely untouched vibrants that I was aware of had no issues with this OTA. If you added functionality to it after the fact that it wasn't originally on there before when you initially purchased it; then its YOUR fault that it bricked, NOT T-mobiles. Take some responsibility and stop crying.
Had the same problem but this is a pretty fix using Odin.
If you install an update from an OTA T-Mobile should be held responsible
I don't know about you guys but when you have been a customer for 10+ years, T-Mobile will pretty much suck your balls.
Either way, if you guys rooted it, then that takes the fault from T-Mobile to you. You changed the phone. The update was designed for a pristine un-edited Samsung Vibrant, if you changed anything in the system by rooting or flashing it is your fault for changing the equation. T-Mobile is NOT at fault for your actions.
Yeah why warranty the phone when you can just ODIN and fix it yourself? Do a xda search. If you're gonna use xda to complain at least use it to solve your own problems as well. Unless your phone is hardware locked it is 100 % fixable.

I bricked two stock Vibrants with the update. The second one failed during Mini-Kies update and was hardware locked.
It is a known issue according to the Tech guy that I spoke to while getting my replacement.
First phone wouldn't power on after failure, second phone was hardware locked so un-fixable.

This happened to me, I had a rooted phone I had uninstalled the inflight internet, etc on it and hadn't overclocked or anything like that. Phone kills itself. I went to the tmo store and they only make you pay for shipping if you take the overnight option.

Word. That's one of the first things I did when I got the phone and was playing with the features. Switched it from phone storage to memory card.
Sorry to hear you lost photos.
Protip: Pay the damn overnight shipping fee...it'll be deducted from your bill (flex pay) which makes it free: )

If I am T mobile every time some person has a problem and I offered free shipping, the Every moron would be shipping the device back for Any problem. Way way costly, so that is not going to happen. If you Really believe the phone is factory defective then, pay the shipping and move on. If you messed with it at all then the burden to resolve is yours and be honest about that. Remember the reason people are in here is to customize the phone and improve it. Like the XDA mantra sez.......... It is not just the result... but the journey....

There is a hardware lock fix now, you really should flash that before you do anything else. Yeah, you run the risk of bricking with the hardware unlock, but it's probably a safer bet than flashing away.

If you Odin it with the JI6 update, you might still be able to get a working system out of it. Worth a shot to see if you can get it without having to flash to stock first (which will wipe).
With all the time you spent with tech support, you could have found the thread that delineates how to fix your phone and update through odin. Its very easy and, frankly why be on a developers forum when you are not willing to tinker around a bit.

As long as the phone still powers on you can still use ADB Pull and save the data from the /sdcard folder. This update isn't a totally bricking the phone (at least it didn't mine) just making the display and inputs not work. To quote Billy Crystal: "He's only MOSTLY dead"
Odin was really simple to reflash the stock ROM and then I was able to do a nandroid restore from there.
The T-Mobile OTA update left my phone only booting to the vibrant screen, but it was a pretty simple fix with Odin. The hardest part was getting the proper drivers installed in windows!
Mini kies wouldnt even let me update,so I rooted and flashed bionix 1.8,works great.**** tmo.
Fyi to the people with hardware lock. I did the update on my gf's phone which was hardware locked and it failed. The phone would only boot to the vibrant screen. The good news is the ota update unlocks the hardware because her phone is able to get into recovery and download mode even thought the update failed. The point is don't worry if ota fail on you because you can just use odin to fix it since it unlocks the download mode.

If the update even gets that far...
I was with 3 and I legitimately unlocked my phone to move over to vodaphone.
The it wouldn't work. Wouldn't recognise the sim.
I sent it back to Vodaphone and they wouldn't touch it because there was a crack in the screen.
I got it home and did a bit of a google search and figured out it had something to do with the EFS file.
I rooted the phone and figured out that its completely empty.
I've tried a 1000's things. Looked at 1000's threads and I'm at a loss.
Is there ANY way to fix this at all?
I'm completely at a loss now.
Can I create a new nv_data.bin file and anything else that needs to be in the efs folder?
Happened to me before.
Well of course the way out will be send to service centre.
However, try a full flash to stock rom.
If it doesn't, try factory reset the phone, flash stock rom.
Since you have no backup, pretty tough here.

Maybe try GS_II Repair from the Market. No idea if/how it works (It's touted on here/on Market as your last best chance before sending it back to Samsung) as I've never used it & always backup my EFS.
If worst comes to worse, pm Odia, and apparently will repair it (edit: remotely) with a "donation". Instal app "team viewer" first;

Yep tried that. Didn't work.
So follow Up In The Air's suggestion & get in touch with Odia & see if he can help, or send it back to Samsung. I'm betting Odia will be cheaper if he can indeed fix it.

I am facing the same problem now. Although i didn't root my s2. Been using it stock since i bought it. Only today i got this no network error (baseband and imei unknown) when i was changing between some sim cards.. Anyone any ideas?? My warranty is still applicable since its just been 5 months. So will samsung cover it under their warranty?
I read in a thread that a user got their imei back by switching off, removing sim, switching back on.
Then they were able to backup efs with correct imei.
Then they switched off, put sim back in, switched on. Can't remember if it was a sim issue but you could try that.

Tried that like a dozen times already.. Heres some more details regarding my problem:
1. My S2 wont detect any sim card (tried like 3-4 sims)
2. When i checked under settings>about i found imei and baseband version are missing and has been changed to "unknown" (*#06# returns a blank number)
3. Its just 5 months old and is in stock condition. (Not rooted and still running 2.3.3)
4. Cant turn off the flight mode (constantly shows in the upper right corner)
5. Cant connect my phone to kies (version 2.0.2.11071_128) on pc either
What do i do now guys? I dont have a proper service centre in my town. I was wondering if i can fix it on my own without making my warranty void..
Try GS_II Repair from Market, and failing that, contact Odia on here who might be able to recover your IMEI for a small 'donation'. Or you could send the phone in for warranty repair given you haven't been messing around with it like most of us here
You'd probably want to use the third option (send it in for warranty service). If you try and fix it yourself & stuff it up, you'll void your warranty & then you'll end up paying to have it fixed.

Any fix will probably void warranty .Try factory reset first.

Thanks dude. Duly noted your point. Here are some more inputs from me:
1. So i tried GS_II repair from market but it requires for the phone to be rooted which mine isn't.
2. And first thing i tried after i faced this problem was doing a factory reset. Have done it over a dozen times by now and it does not solve it.
3. I faced this problem when i was changing between some sims cards within a couple of minutes. (Hope this doesn't void my warranty since i wasn't actually messing with it!)
4. As i mentioned in my earlier post, my town doesn't actually have a proper authorised service centre. So sending it for service would mean missing my baby S2 for over a month or two (which i find hard since i am so used to it by now)!
So my question is, can i flash an official stock firmware which matches with mine (i found one already here on xda, thanks you guys!) without having to root my phone or making my warranty void, and more importantly, will it solve my problem?
No reflashing a rom won't help, your best bet is to send it off to Samsung before you do anything that might void your warranty.

Seriously dude, don't try and fix it yourself. Regardless of how long you'll be without it, at least you'll get it back working and it won't cost you anything other than postage (I presume ?).
If you stuff up whatever you try to do to fix it, you might brick it, which means you'll be without your phone while Samsung fixes it anyway, only you'll be paying for it to be fixed. And given you've already spent however much you paid for the phone, do you really want to spend another couple of hundred bucks to have it repaired when you can get it fixed for nothing ?
As the very wise two posters above me have said, just don't risk it.

While i was briefing them about my missing IMEI no. they told me that the reason behind it could be me using screen-lock-pattern on my phone. Is it true? Any one experienced it before?

That's interesting. I use a pattern lock mostly & have never seen a relationship between it and the IMEI going missing. What I have noticed tho (and I've seen other people report on here) is the IMEI/baseband go missing occasionally if you reboot the phone whilst connected to a charger.
This rights itself if you do a reboot (occasionally two) with the phone off charger. The first time it happened it scared the crap out of me I had an EFS backup so it would have been recoverable, but it happened out of the blue & I had no idea what caused it. I re-flashed my modem as a first step as the baseband was missing, and that seemed to fix it tho I suspect simply rebooting did the job.

The screen unlock codes are stored in the efs, both patern and pin so maybe that's correct, but efs and thus imei corruption seem to be random, I got it once updating my rom, I keep about 5 backups so I was ok, scary thought.
If you are going to root, first thing you should do after rooting is make an efs backup, hellcats ktool from the market is a good choice, easy and works well.

The Reason i ask is either it is or i am the unluckiest person ever with a S2 lol
So far got the phone at xmas wasn't happy with the screen colours sent it off they said the main chip was faulty and had been replaced and a software upgrade etc...
Got it back and flashed a custom rom, well a few and noticed that i then had an issue where if someone called i had to put loudspeaker on in order to hear the other person...
Put phone back to stock and sent it off again...
Phone came back last week picked up monday used for a day all seemed fine, flashed a custom rom got another problem with the phone this time i have to put the loudspeaker on to hear other people they can hear me fine...
So its back to stock and back to vodafone tomorrow...
So can custom roms/kernels cause physical issue's with phones, never had an issue with my HTC Desire HD but i'm beginning to wonder if i should leave my next S2 stock, or have i just been unlucky ???
Would also add when going back to stock the screen colours seem much better than custom roms but the sounds issue's remain...

Trust me if that was the case damaging my phone by flashing a rom then my phone would of been damaged goods by the first month i had it
Anyway just be careful how you flash a rom and it is always advised to do a full wipe before installing one
Um, actually, yes.
You run the (slight) risk of bricking your phone every single time you flash something to it. If you're the type of person who's paranoid about these things & can't handle the idea of possibly not getting warranty service if things go wrong, you shouldn't be messing with your phone in the first place.
Anyone who has an expectation (as opposed to a "hope") of warranty service after they stuff around with the phone is an idiot.
The SG2 is a hard phone to brick. Follow the general guidelines and you should be fine. I can't imagine flashing a rom can break this phone. Worst that can happen is you brick it. Either it works or it doesn't.

Sounds like I've been unlucky then 3rd time phone is going back and since Xmas 1day without a fault not a great introduction to Samsung for me...

In all my time reading SGS1 and 2 the only ones who have bricked their phone are the idiots (1) who refuse to read instructions . Even then 90% of them have been able to recover .
the SGS2 quota of 1 is getting higher day by day for some reason .

Seconded..
It's possible to introduce some new bugs by flashing a custom ROM (that's the price of development, you uncover new weird stuff), but not to physically damage the phone. You'd have to fiddle with the battery or greatly increase the voltages to accomplish that.
If you experience hardware issues after flashing a ROM, it means that the hardware was faulty before, and flashing the ROM just uncovered it and made it obvious to you whereas it was hidden before.
But don't let it get you down. Apparently a lot of SGS2's are faulty when coming out of the factory and need to be replaced.
The first one I had didn't last the night, it 'overcooked' itself when I plugged it to the mains to get it recharged (I knew those phones could get pretty hot but damn ! a 100°C is too much for it, it didn't stand the strain and gave up)..
In fairness they suggested a new phone in Vodafone today so it's gone back with the the request of a new phone rather than repair so we'll see
Also if anyone is interested I obviously flashed a few custom roms and reset the counter to zero and installed original Vodafone software and have had no issues warranty wise

I seem to have been lucky with a Vodafone SGSII, I'd have insisted on a new phone from it's first problem, Vodafone have always been pretty good at replacing.
I am wondering however how did you manage to reset the flash counter ? Even with a USB Jig mine won't reset. It will go into download mode, but that's it. I presumed my six week old SGSII was a newer one a jig won't work on.
Before trying to reset the counter you should flash the old boot loader (pre-KI1) on, the new one cannot be reset safely with a jig. Works just fine after this

I live in India and I wanted to get some information on getting a replacement for my RAZR. I have quite dissatisfied with the performance of this device. It has been giving me issues which are not ROM related(lag, reboots, random update failures). They simply persist despite my efforts of changing the ROM to remove them.
These issues mostly occur randomly so it's quite hard for me to actually prove to someone that I am experiencing them.
So I don't wanna go through all the Motorola Service Center BS for getting a replacement, as they will most likely tell me that I am using my phone wrong and slam the door in my face(pure speculation on my part, but then this does happen in India).
Can someone tell me an easy way to get a replacement through Motorola? Doesn't have to be pertaining to my issue. I can easily soft-brick my device(and restore it, if need be) and all, so if someone has any information, please do share.
Alternatively, if I do have to go to a service center, will they check a soft-bricked device for previous flashing attempts or will they simply declare it non-functional and replace it?

Leave it at Motorola services and you'll feel good. If it's defecrtive you'll get a replacement. While your razr is at moto services, look for online chanels on the internet and ask for help. Look for motorola india in facebook and talk 2 moto there too.

Thanks for the input. Well in India it doesn't exactly work that way. As far as I know you have to go to a service center and prove to them that your device is faulty. After that they diagnose the device and if they find the problem irreparable they replace the product reluctantly. So just wanted to make sure that I'll get a replacement and not some service center BS saying I'm doing it wrong.

From my experience you will not get replacement until your cell is fully unresponsive first they will try to flash ur phone if it is not work than u r lucky u will get replacement i have 1 idea but its vry risky if u want competely brick ur device without dropping our putting into water you can try my method for this u will need a pc with fornt usb available open your pc just cross connect front usb cable thats it try ur pendrive first diffidently it will damage inside chip than u can try ur cell it will done the same this i have done this before to get the replacement for my MOTO DEFY. Hope this will help you.
Well I'm definitely not gonna try a full hard brick. But still thanks for the input. I'll see what I can do. I'll try Delhi first during my vacations and then Hyderabad. If that doesn't work, then well I guess I'm pretty much stuck.
A friend with a defy plus got his motherboard replaced within warranty after he bricked his phone trying to flash some roms. I'm not saying this would be the case with you as well but you would never know till you go to the service centre.
Maybe Off topic: I have an Indian XT910 and ever since i have updated to 2.3.6 i have problems receiving text messages. everything else works just fine. This is one of the most niggling issues. When i contacted the motorola call center they told me to go to an authorized service centre and get my phone downgraded to the previous version(2.3.4-not sure if there is any such version). This is an active discussion on the official motorola forum as well but the issue has not been solved.
Was wondering if any of you guys have had the same issue and were able to solve it?
(Please let me know if i need to start a new thread for this)
dude i can understand ur eagerness, i got a replacement for my razr, but as i purchased it through flipkart.com i was given a brand new handset from flipkart.com. i dont how motorola service center deals

Oh yeah, my grandparents bought it for me when they were in Delhi, so the Flipkart option is not gonna work for me. Any ways thanks for the input.

The only problem with the RAZR is that first they'll try flashing back the original firmware which won't repair my issue, but will make them feel that it works just fine. That's why I was wondering if there was another way. I can't hard brick the phone so no matter what I do, a fastboot flash will restore it back to working condition anyways.
I was thinking about doing this, use Bootstrap to format data, cache, system and emmc partitions and go to the store complaining that the phone fails to boot after an update which I get. They will most likely try doing a data wipe from the built in recovery which will fail due to absence of an actual android system partition. Also all traces of Bootstrap will be removed because of the system partition not containing any data anymore. After this I'll basically tell them that this happens every time I try to update the phone. So maybe they might look past the fact that it's a simple software issue. I dunno if it'll work though.
Also one more thing, do the store guys give a damn about the user's wants, like for example if the user wants a new phone instead of a motherboard replacement, do they actually consider that? Because I'm gonna be in Delhi for a few days only so won't really have the time to get a motherboard replacement done because that'll take more than just a few days(and I really want an entirely new RAZR, I feel cheated with my current one)
And lastly, no I haven't had any of the issues you've mentioned. My 2.3.6 runs fine in that aspect. Just the random lag, and reboots which are killing me.

but a lot of people seem to be having this issue... and i did not have this issue when i was on 2.3.5... you are on stock right? and any other Indian razr owners having this issue?
and btw you should call the motorola customer care at 180030004343 and get whatever information you need(at least you'll get an idea if you will be getting a replacement)

Already did. After I described the issue he told me to do a factory reset from the Motorola Recovery(which I've tried multiple times before. DOES NOT WORK). I told that it doesn't work. Then he said that he cannot help me further on the phone and I would have to go to a Motorola Service Center to get my phone checked for issues. He said nothing about a replacement. I have emailed Motorola customer care about the same. They haven't replied yet. WTF is wrong with Motorola Customer care!

I wonder how you got your handset replaced through flipkart.com...I contacted them but they told me they can't help me and that I need to go to a moto service center using the list of service center's as a reference, which they had sent me along with the phone... be kind enough to share how did you get it replaced through flipkart

I think he was referring to Flipkart's 30 day replacement guarantee when he said that he got a replacement from Flipkart.
I sent my Galaxy Note into Samsung to get the screen repaired.
When I sent it off, I realized that I forgot to reset the flash counter.
I was scared ****less.
Anyway, they repaired it and it is about to be sent back to me.
I just thought I would let everyone know that there is nothing to worry about.

I think you just got lucky bud and I would not encourage anyone else to do the same thing. Just because they agreed to fix your phone doesn't mean that everyone else will be as fortunate. Samsung and your phone carrier clearly stated that if you do flash a non OEM ROM you will be voiding your warranty.
Also, lets wait till you get your phone back before you consider this a success.

Yeah. I wouldn't recommend it. I feel like if I sent my phone in for some sort of software issue I would be out of luck.
I will update this thread when I actually get the phone back.
it might depend on the repair in question. A screen replacement is just hardware so they may not mind the software being a custom ROM. I sent in a GT 10.1 with AOKP installed to fix a screen issue. I'm sure they noticed the angry rainbow unicorn when they booted it up. They fixed it no problem though annoyingly, they actually WIPED my entire device, sdcard and everything back to stock. On the GT 10.1 boards, no one has had that happen except me.
I have to send my note in for a repair on my SD card slot, which keeps popping out the microsd. My phone has a custom rom and probably 3 on the flash counter. I was hoping they didn't care since it was a hardware issue. On a side note, it sucks that AT&T doesn't give out loaner phones while it's being fixed.

Makes me wonder if they just gave you a different phone? Or you memorized the hardware numbers? I agree with you being a hardware issue, they are probably not going to care about the flash counter. If you sent them a boot looping device that had the flash counter up high, then i would suspect they might say something.
No real worries guys. I had to send my phone in to Sammy for a screen issue a couple days before braway released the counter reset. They repaired it with no issues, wiped the ROM and reset the counter for me lol. This was back in late March.
Edit- in my case, they gave me the same phone because the Bluetooth physical address was the same. They replaced the screen including the front glass, so I didn't get my screen protector back.
Im pretty sure the techs there get paid by the hour and Im also sure that they themselves(techs) flash custom software on their devices. If I worked in that dept, I would spend the extra time resetting your flash counters and reverting you to stock, only to make my day go by quicker... I wouldn't recommend betting the farm on that. IMHO

It depends on the store. I threw a fit, called customer service and they have me a credit for ****tiest prepaid phone they have. Least its mine now as a total emergency backup. I was not gonna be out of a phone for days.

I sent it off Monday and I already have the tracking number for the return shipping. In any case, I am using my old iPhone 3g until I get my phone back. It's always good to have a spare.
So people wouldn't recommend it, but who here has actually been denied service with an upped counter?
Traditionally, going all the way back to my Nexus One, the phone manufacturers don't care about root/s-off/flash counter if it's a clear hardware issue. If your button stops working or your screen doesn't respond anymore or your phone doesn't charge, they generally fix it.

Of course its best to have a backup, but at the time I didn't. I didn't expect a loaner, but when the CSR on the phone said I'd get one...then the store says no...well, we have problems.
