[Q] tf 201 charge only with dock connected solution? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

hi
i have a little problem with my tablet asus prime , it charges only with dock connected. if i charge tablet only then i see an recognised icon but no charge at all.
there is a solution for this problem?
sorry for my bad english

Had the same problem and fixed it. Some say you can fix it by holding the
reset button for 30 seconds (a paperclip in the pinhole by microsd slot).
Definately try that first.
That didn't do it for me, and I can't send it back as I have no warranty.
So I opened it and fixed it (how to in thread below. If the pinhole trick
does not work and you are under warranty you'll have to send it to Asus.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1715252&highlight=fastcharge+issue
Hope this helps! Lets hear how it goes!!!

i tried your method but it doesn't work.
maybe it is a faulty cable or ac adapter? it is strange that it charges with dock (it's the same connector)

Yes it's very strange, I was going crazy over this issue for two months, had two RMA's but they couldn't fix it.
Did you open your prime or did you try the pinhole?

Transformer Prime charging problem

Hy all
I received my asus transformer prime some hours ago. I have the problem that my device does not charge when I put in the cable into my computer. But the device connets to the computer and is known as Transformer prime.
The only way to charge it in a slow mode is to turn off the screen, plug in into the computer and wait. Then it charges about 5 percent in an hour. I guess this way it charges only with 5V instead of 15V. I don't use any extension cables.
Where to you think is the problem and how can I solve it? There are other posts in other forum with the same problem.
Did anyone else had this problem? Thank you in advance. (sorry for my english)
You can only charge it with a wall charger officially -> there us no problem
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9100 mit Tapatalk
No charging with USB? Are you sure?
I can't use the US charger because I live in Europe. But I ordered now the charger from Transformer Prime - seams to be the same - for Europe. Maybe this helps.
Try this
http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/ai_charger/
Thank you - i will try this tool and buy an US/EU adapter. Hope it works.
The instructions in the online PDF for the TF101 state that you can ONLY charge on straight USB with the unit OFF. I doubt that would change for the TF102
Is the adapter only 110v? If not just get something like this:

My wife has the original transformer and it will charge from my computer ONLY when the screen is off (weird right?) and even so, it charges sooo slow that way. She left it over night and it went from 18% up to 47%!
I'm still waiting for my Prime. Can someone confirm or deny this same tactic will work with it? You're better off getting the wall charger, but it might do in a pinch.
The problem is that the device goes ON if I plug it into the computer . Okay, I have to shut down the device after I plugged in.
There s thread in the original transformer forum that dig into the charging needs of the transformer.
The short version is, you need a 12v output, most standard USB AC only output 5v.
And you need to use the Asus USB wire, standard USB wire doesn't support 12volt current.
I did find a generic 12v AC with a USB port, priced around 10 euros in EU, it's not uber commun but I found it in a general store, so you shouldn't have to much problem getting one somewhere.

This does still work - I can confirm. But don't have so much time all the time
you guys should not be surprised at the charging speed on USB2.0. Most USB ports (unless you're using a newer motherboard) max out at 500ma. You can do the math.
Most tablets don't charge at all via USB to PC. This is because they have bigger batteries and the PC USB standard power output is 5v. Having it charge at all via USB is a blessing, but will not be practical in most situations. However, I am glad to have the option.
It would be nice to have the USB standard on PC increased to handle this, but maybe USB 4.0.
There is an extension to USB 3.0 that is being proposed that will allow up to 100 watts of charging. Should be seeing it in 2012.
http://www.guru3d.com/news/new-usb-30-power-spec-enables-up-to-100w/
Will this charge in a USB 3.0 port can anyone confirm? And does it requires turning it off?

Try the program I posted earlier in this tread. Works with any PC motherboard and will charge your tablets.

I have that program with my Asus mobo it does NOT charge your tab faster and does not even notice it is there like it does with a Ipod
Solution to Transformer Prime not charging problem
I'm not an apologist for ASUS, their UK tech support was useless and offered the only solution as a return for repair.
So you can be sure you have the same problem. My Prime worked perfectly (brilliant piece of kit!) but two days again stopped taking charge. Keypad drained completely, tab was down to 25% before I realised I had to do something. ICS has been downloaded.
ASUS told me it was the transformer plug not working - wrong I tested the output. Charge was not beinbg taken when cable was plugged into a PC or a an alternative USB transformer either.
ASUS told me it was the cable not working - Wrong - it woke the device up when plugged in.
ASUS told me it was because the new firmware was the problem and it shoudl go back to them for resetting to Android 3. Wrong.
ANSWER - Simples, reset with a paper clip using the small hole by the SD card in the Tab. Ten seconds. Restart.
Tablet and Dock start to recharge instantly. No problems since. No setting seem to be lost, all Skype contacts, Wireless passwords intact.
Don't panic and don't send it back. Hope this helps.
Spread the word gret piece of kit, just ignore the ASUS help....
Thanks a lot
you made my day,it was not charging at all..the asus prime came from singapore and im currently in india it wasnt charging at all now it works perfectly.all i had to do was reset the pad .then it started charging ..
Just to double check, what effect does this reset have on the software. Any apps/data/settings lost? Does it revert the software to an older version?

Problem with charging Pad and/or Dock

Now after waiting more than one month I got my transformer, but...
The pad (alone) is charging very slow (several hours) although the pad tells me it is not charging - strange!
The dock (alone) is not charging
The pad in the dock is charging as long as the dock has some power
but remember, I'm not able to charge the dock.
Phonecall with Amazon:
I should send back all the stuff and they will replace it.
I waited more than one month for the pad and therefore I suggested only to send me a new charging cable and adapter
That is not possible for Amazon, so they gave me the phone number from Asus
Phonecall with Asus:
They will not send me a new cable and adapter without having my one.
It can last up to several weeks till I will get back the cable - hmpf!
Trying to buy a new cable/adapter, so that I can work with my pad is very (too) expensive.
So, now I am thinking about giving all back and buy some other stuff from another company.
Frustrating!

I'm sorry to hear this. At my local bestbuy they have a Prime and dock on display. Maybe your local Bestbuy has a display model with a AC Adapter/cable that you could try out?
@skygunner: What do you mean with "Bestbuy"?
Bestbuy is a local electronics store here in the U.S. Do you have a store that sells the Prime where you can test your dock?
we have some but they don't sell this one but only the parent version and there I think is a different adapter/cable.
Solv ethe Transformer Prime charging problem - easy
Don't send back to ASUS they have no idea what this problem is.
Simple solution ( I had nothing to lose by trying it). Reset using a paper clip for 10 seconds in hole in tablet near SD card.
No settings seem to be lost, all wireless passwords intact, Skype contacts OK. Started taking charge straightaway. And been fine since. I would prefer that ASUS could tell me why but it is working fine and a brilliant piece of kit. No WiFI or GPS issues for me and buying through Carphone Warehouse pain free and I was no fan of theirs. Hope this helps.
My symptoms were:
Keyboard had drained to nil, tab had drained to 25%. No charge being taken. Tried alternative trasnformer plug and a PC USB port. Still no charge. Cable was recognised as it sparked the Prime into life. I have ICS downloaded.
don't reset.
put your charger in the freezer for a while.

Or bend the prongs to ensure proper connection once charger is fully assembled
Or all of them.
P.s.
If you throw it in the freezer, please put it in a bag and don't let it get saturated with moisture.
(So so funny that they can't even get like a $1 charger right, and we're expecting a fully-functioning tablet from them...)

I have two primes, one grey which is mine and one champagne that I purchased for my girlfriend. I started having the same problem as you with my charging kit. The prime is supposed to show that it is charging when you look at the battery status on the notification bar or when viewing the battery status in the os. It turns out I have a bad cable. I confirmed this buy switching the the cable but not the power adapter. I am looking for an after markert power cable that hopefully will be constructed better. In the meantime I will call Asus to see if they will cover a replacement. If you say yours is slowy charging I think the your problem may be with the power adapter. Unless it a more serious issue like the battery connector or the battery itself which would require you to send it in for repair...
I had the same problem that started yesterday after the update (coincidence??). It took several hours to charge where I couldn't use it. No notification that it is charging either. Turns out my problem is the cable as well because I tested my prime with my friend TF101 cable and I hear the ding when it connects and it charges. Going to contact Asus support to see if they will send a replacement. You can buy one at Office Depot for $29 though.
Spoke to Asus support and I'm suppose to send back the cable for them to look at and then they would send me a replacement. Looks like the prime may be unusable for a while now. Anyway going to have to charge mine with my friend's charger til mine comes back.
Just be thankful they didn't tell you to send the entire device back... as much as I love ASUS's gear, they really have some bad tech support at times.
Had a laptop, with a bad power brick.. verified by using another power brick without problem.. and they made me send EVERYTHING back.. was without a laptop for almost 6 weeks while the idiots at their Jeffersonville, IN repair facility damaged the laptop even more... eventually one of their customer reps saw my endless ranting and squared it all away...
ASUS has always been good at fixing issues in the long run, but the short run they still have a few reps that can't think for themselves, and 'stick to the script'. I'm glad to see Gary is hanging out over here to address issues on XDA. Least they're on top of things with regards to this.

[Q] something strange with the dock! help please

Hello everyone,
Saturday i bought a Asus transformer Prime TF21 (32go).
Same day i have noticed an issue with the docking station.
I don't know why but some times the docking station is not detected by the tablet.
I have to plug the power and then the docking station is detected by the tablet, then i can remove the power and use the keyboard. it work until i release the tablet.
some time keyboard is detected.
Docking station and tablet are fully charged, i'm in ICS 4.0.3
In a first time i have unchecked the function that disable the keyboard when the tabet is sleeping, i was thinking that worked but today the bug append again
do you have any idea?
thank you for your help
Morlocko
You may have a bad connector. If you plug the power first does that always work? If so then maybe software related. The only real way to check for hardware issue is to get another dock or another tablet. It should always recognize when its docked and theres not a way to disable that.

No clue, I've never had this happen or seen mention of it elsewhere. Aside from a lot of people whose docks would only register some of their input, but this sounds different. Something must be a little screwy with your dock or your Prime's charge port.
when i plug the power, the keyboard is directly recognised. then i can take off the power cable and use it all the time. i can even power off then power on the tablet it will always work but if i unplug again the tablet from the dock then i have to plug power on the dock if i want to use it again. The dock is fully charged so i think it's a not a power issue

The keyboard also properly charges the Prime at 70% then? I just don't know what the issue could be. A mis-aligned pin would result in the same thing happening even after plugging the power in wouldn't it?
yes the keyboard charge the prime. i can start the prime with the dock powered or i can put the power after the start it change nothing, until keyboard has some power for a second then he is recognized by the prime.
what i don't understand is until prime is unpluged i can power it off then on without power on the dock
but if i unplug the prime then need power
very strange
i want to be sure it's a defective one because if i go to shop and the prime as nothing they will ask money for support

Again, I don't see how it's not some physical defect somewhere. I haven't seen anything like this, I'd try to swap it out or something. I don't understand that last sentence so well, but see if you can't try another dock in-store.
i will say that if i go to the shop and say the dock is not working, they will test it but if they says dock is working they ask money (around 75$) if dock is really not working then there is nothing to pay.
can we plug/remove the prime on the dock when she's powered on?
or do we have to power off first and then plug-in the prime?
thank you

Oh yeah, you can! Totally, I never turn my Prime off.
I don't know about this shop though, what's the name? Where did you actually buy the dock, and when? I'd try actually taking to where you bought it first, but I don't know all your situation. Does seem risky if you for some reason have to pay, but I don't understand why you would; that being said though, since you yourself know there's a bit of a work-a-round they could easily realize the same work-a-round and still try and charge you. But where I'm at, no such situation would exist.
1 thing is for certain, your device is definitely not working properly or optimally.

Asus Charger not detected :(

Hello my friends,
My charger is not detected on my prime.
I use my stock asus charger.
Nevertheless, it charge ! Slowly...but it charge !
I reset the tab, no changes !
I do a reset factory and a wip, no changes.
Anyone know any tips or solutions ?
Thanks a lot
Best regards,
Nixeus
It could be the cable. I have read about cable problems when connecting to a pc.

I had the same issue a few weeks back..
have you tried the freezer trick?
the charger device overloads from time to time and a protection mechanism kicks in.
Put the charger in a freezer bag (to prevent any water getting in), then put the bag with the charger in your freezer for 20/30 minutes.
This worked for me several times
eventually my charger died
I got a replacement charger from amazon does the job..
I had this problem a few times too, the first few times putting the charger in the fridge worked. After about three times that stopped working, so i bought a new cable and it worked. I was surprised because i thought the problem was in the charger itself, but the new cable fixed it. Another thing you can try is to slide off the part of the charger that plugs into the wall. There will be two metal prongs. Bend them away from each other, just a little bit. I have read that this fixes some peoples problems as well.
I had the same problem with my charger, sendt it in, an got a new in return from the Asus workshop.
I had issues with the PC then eventually it stopped charging. Called asus and did an rma. Had a new one in two weeks.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
For information, I also had a same charging problem last week-end: my prime and the dock didn't charge anymore!? I finally found out that the CABLE was the source of the problem.
Same thing here happened to me months ago. Tested all combinations with another TF700 and found out it was the cable. Now I'm back to charging like normal with no issues.
