Would it be possible to upgrade a stock ROM with an official update.zip when one receives it? If so please post it.
I don't think so. You'd have to have root to put the file in the proper place in your filesystem. I don't think it would flash from the SD card without doing the rigmarole we've been doing anyway.

As long as the file is signed by Motorola, wouldn't it be as simple as putting it on your sd card, booting into stock recovery, and picking that file or naming it properly so it is picked up automatically? Isn't that what an OTA update does?
Again, I could be wrong, but I don't think OTAs are downloaded to the SD-card. I think they're put in /preinstall in the phone's internal memory.
Nah.. i went to official. 181 but putting zip on sd card ..

If you want it to be recognized as an official update (to be installed by the actual bootloader) you have to just drop it as "update.zip" in the correct place and it'll install fine. The problem is you have to be rooted to place it *into* that place.
But that's not a problem
if i get it.
i'll see what i can do
My phone is downloading the update. How to extract it out?
Ahh, should have explained. I am rooted, but everything is stock besides SU and Wireless Tether. :good:

I can not load into hboot, when I do, it reads the sd card and then asks me if I want to update. ph98img is on my sd card and if I am not mistaking that is whats causing the update? What do I do to be able to boot into hboot? Can I just change the name of that file, or do I even need that file? I am not running ics, have cwm recovery, and ziggys kernel running at 1.86.
Any info is greatly appreciated (I am not tech savvy at all)

I ran into this as well a week or so ago. I pulled my sd card out and put it into my Incredible and deleted the ph98img file. I then put the sd back into my Rezound and then you can once again boot into hboot.

This.
Also, if you don't have another device to put the device in, you can just take the sdcard, put what you were gonna flash on internal storage, then flash that way. Once your phone is functional you can then put the sdcard in and delete the file.
Or... You could just "adb reboot recovery" and turn on mount SD Card.

Thanks for the answers. I just deleted it off my sd card, will it change how things are running or hurt something, I saved it to my desktop in case I fouled something up. It will now let me into hboot though.

You don't need it on the sdcard at all after it updates. It's fine to keep it off. It won't mess anything up.
EDIT: Make sure you hit the thanks button on the posts above you for helping!! I don't need the thanks for this little post, but it's good to show those guys that you appreciate the help!
So here's my situation. I have s-off via wire trick/controlbear program, running amon ra recovery and I did use a sacrificial sd card in the process. I've tried probably 5 different ics roms and the only thing that doesn't work is the sd card. It doesn't give a notification in the top bar but only when I attempt to browse the card through a file manager or gallery then it either says "sd card unmounted" or "please insert sd card". I've wiped everything and formatted it 10 ways from Sunday through windows and the recovery menu but it still isn't recognized. I even tried a few other sd cards I have laying around that I know for sure have been untouched from the rooting process and they do not work either. On the other hand, whenever I revert back to Gingerbread whether it be stock RUU or Rom the sd card works just fine so that makes me think there's nothing wrong with the card it's just not working in ics for some reason. I've done all I can do to the extant of my knowledge to fix it so any other suggestions would be very much appreciated!!! thanks
Additional info, I don't know if it makes a difference or not but when I did the s-off procedure I didn't flash the custom hboot. The hboot is still on 2.11.0000

Yeah I've tried that still no cigar
You need the "old firmware patch" because you have gingerbread firmware and the mount points are different for the sd card on ics.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
In order to avoid this problem I would recommend following the instructions contained in the second post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603917
This will upgrade your firmware to the current leak which will make it unnecessary to flash the old firmware patch, the reason your SD card won't mount is because you are on the old firmware and haven't flashed the patch.

Hello guys I think my Vibrant just passed away.
After installing the new ROM 2.11 PA and few apps I had backed up with titanium my Vibrant lost its SD Card. It wont find it and it will stay looping at the CWM menu and nothing else. Os after few tries to recover I decided to Odin and start over but all I get is the splash menu and power off
Im not a median loader. I think I have plenty of experience as I have root phones about 200 times. Load ROMs about 500 times easy.
But this one is biting me. It just wont go to recovery or bootup..
All Im able to do is to ODIN de phone successfully and get it to Download mode and recovery mode. Other then that it just dont do anything else but showing me the splash and go black screen.
Any ideas?

It only goes to stock recovery and download mode after I odin and it pass!!
but the phone wont pass through the splash as it goes blank. Before had a problem with not detecting the SD Card as well
I have tried ODIN and Lidroid http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058802
But none of them are able to get me back fully pass the splash.
If you are using eclair in the odin pda, you might search and download this pda, dont tick repartition...Eugene_2E_jk2_froyo.tar. Hard to say Im not familiar with the rom you flashed.
If you have download, you'll find an answer.
I had a very similar situation with my vibrant and treated it as the eu bug, get an external sd, partition it and install Rom from stock recovery, depending on the type of rom you are wanting to run, you will have to make a modification to the vold.fstab file. If you tell me the ostensibly you will be running I can further help you on the edits to be done to the file. (editing the vold.fstab file will allow the phone and apps to recognize your partitioned sd card in the same way it usually sees you internal sd.)

Here is the vold.fstab file for jb roms, however if you aren't using the external sd install I mentioned you shouldn't need it, if so just paste this over the existing file in /system/etc.
Thanks mate but I cant install any roms because the phone cant read the SD Card :crying:

Ok I put the Eugene Frojo again to try formatting the sd card and I got this when I attempted
Code:
Your Storage is not ready yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
Why are you trying to format the SD card? How are you trying it (in Rom Manager or on PC). Either way, STOP!!! That is part of what is messing things up. The ROM Manager format and partition options do not work correctly.
What is it that you are ultimately trying to do? Please don't say "seeing storage". That is a symptom of the problem. It seems that you are trying too many things at once. What is your goal here and once we know that, it will be better for us to diagnose your problem.

Hello mate, all Im trying to do is to access the SD Card so I can put the update file to root and the roms I want to flash. Another thing is I cant install anything because is not detecting the Internal SD card. I cant even take photos because the same reason. and due to this same reason is not detectting neither the external micro sd.
Hey all, been reading a bunch on rooting the nook tablet so you would think I would be able to do this no questions asked but unfortunately I can't.
My nook is on that 1.4.3 so I am using this method here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21895025&postcount=14
and there is no zip in that original download and there is no gapp. So I tried to follow the instructions from page 25 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583&page=25
and then boot to the CWM. Now I go to try and unzip the zip I downloaded from page 25, and none of those are zips (side note, for whatever reason when I unzipped the files from page 25 into a folder so I could grab them whenever. Windows encrypted them. So when I copied them to the SD card I un-encrypted them)
So my question to everyone is: Where is this actual zip file and gapp at? My end goal is to root my Nook tablet to either ICS or Jellybean 'permanently' so as not to keep an SD card in it.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
It's probably easier to just skip plain root and flash ICS or Jellybean. Would you rather do that or stay rooted on the stock ROM for a while?

but....I want to make sure I get a pretty stable flash going if that is the case? I can always flash back right?
Thanks for your quick reply Solar Plexus
Yes, you can flash back. Are you familiar with ClockworkMod recovery? The first order of business is to decide whether you want CWM recovery flashed internally or just run it from an SD card. I'm assuming you want everything internal, but just making sure.

I am pretty sure I have the CMW installed on a SD card right now because I can boot to the area where you choose a zip. You know when you boot and you get the white background and the box center on screen.
Is it best to have it internal?
Yes, the white, then the box, then black screen with a bunch of options in neon blue lettering. It should say CWM recovery at the top somewhere. You have this, correct?

Correct, I have this on my SD card currently
You can keep it running from SD card or flash it internally. Either way, you'll always have the option to boot recovery from SD, that is, as long as you're able to boot from an SD card in general.
At any rate, you're ready to flash a new ROM. Download the ROM from the Development subforum that you want to flash and report back. CM7 is currently the most stable.

So the method in my first post makes my SD card a partition of 75mb or so. I won't be able to put the ZIP ROMs on to it. Do you have a link to a detailed instruction so I can write boot img on to the SD card without killing all my space? My SD card is 16gb.
Don't put the ROM on that SD card. Put the ROM zip and gApps on the internal storage of your actual NT (that's the /mnt/media partition). Then you can choose the option to "install zip from internal SD" in CWM.
Also, do you have a 16GB NT or 8GB? Which ROM will you be flashing?

I have the 16GB NT.
I think I will go with the CM7 mod, but I am so tempted to do the jelly bean CM10 mod. Have it on my galaxy nexus and love it. Edit: I have the stock 4.1 OTA update on my galaxy nexus not the CM10 mod
You might want to wait a little while. I get lots of black screens of death on my CM10 ROM. CM7 will definitely be an upgrade to what you're used to though, so don't worry about that.
Here's the directions for flashing a new ROM on your NT:
1.) Make a backup of your current ROM (just to be safe!)
2.) Advanced options -> wipe Dalvik cache
3.) Install your ROM.
4.) Wipe data and cache.
5.) Install gApps.
6.) Reboot and enjoy.

Hey thanks for the info, but where exactly do I throw this zip file onto the Nook at? You said to put it on internal storage. Can I put it anywhere?
Put it on the root of the /mnt/media partition. It's the partition that pops up when you plug your NT into a PC. Or navigate to it using the file explorer if you downloaded straight to the NT.

Yes, I can put it on my actual My Nook G: (I assume I have less SSD/HDD than you or named them differently) and the other drive for the nook is considered a 'removable disk'

Hey everyone.
I think I may have run into a small hiccup trying to flash my Android device. I'm trying too root a Bell Canada Galaxy Note - I717M.
I managed to find a ZIP file containing CWM recovery image, Superuser, and ODIN Flasher. I loaded these files in the root folder of the INTERNAL (16GB) memory card on the device. (Not an EXTERNAL SD)
As my first step I flashed the CWM rar file in Odin under "PDA" - The device reset and next I booted into Clockwork Mod. Now in the ClockMod menu, the option to "Flash ZIP from SD Card" is not displayed.
I don't currently have an SD card inserted. Does these mean that I would have to reflash CWM entirely? Or perhaps I performed the procedure incorrectly by copying the files to the Internal Storage card?
Even though the Recovery menu did install, is the missing option a result of the device needing to be rooted FIRST, prior to CWM installation?
I'm a little confused so any help would be appreciated. Would I just be looking at a complete REFLASH with Odin after inserting an EXTERNAL SD? Or just placing the files on the external SD Card (once inserted), booting back into CWM and selecting "Install from ZIP"? (If it becomes available)
My main objective is simply to root the device. I'm not looking to install a custom ROM at the moment ... just perform a simple root.
Thanks for everyone's time.

Thank you so much for the link. I completely would have missed that. I just want to be sure I'm doing this correctly now that there is this "extra step"
The procedure says "If you have an Offending Script" from an OTA ICS UPGRADE
To be honest I'm not sure if this device was upgraded to 4.0 via KIES or OTA. As I bought the phone already running 4.0.4.
Would that make any difference to the procedure outlined in the link? (E.g. Step 7)
Just to clarify. If the phone is supposed to "Reinstall stock recovery" than why would I still be able to boot into CWM?
Thanks for the help :good:
Install from SD is external

Sounds reasonable. Forgive me, I've been off Android for a while now. Just beginning to get back into the swing of things.
I reapplied CWM in Odin. Same result. Although what I thought as CWM is in-fact stock recovery. I'll give the method in the link a shot.
