We just need a kernel for OC/UV and we're still better than any factory bloat they push out.

As has been stated, an official release is required for source code (at least, thats how Samsung does it).
Source code allows tweaking of the kernel for things like over clocking (which is probably the most OVERRATED functionality that tweaking the kernel will provide - case in point, give me a real world application where the Note isnt fast enough - its fine if you want to look at numbers but that is as useless to me as the Windows Experience Index - its a waste of time) and potentially correcting some of the issues this phone has (black crush and inaccurate stylus).
But, as is the usual case, the people that CANT seem to understand this will continue to make the usual 'just flash a custom rom and be done with it' statements. There are a few of us that are fine with the official rom. I think Samsung has done a decent job with Touchwiz and the software FROM SAMSUNG is actually good. Rooting and removing of the ATT crap however is something I have been considering.
I WILL say that a REAL version of Cyanogen would be great, Im just not interested in it until they have some source code for the kernel and can actually do a real build.
With the official release of ICS for the Galaxy S2 having come just yesterday, and the fact that it REQUIRES flashing via Kies (Samsung's version of Itunes), Im guessing the Note is only a week or two away.

Correct me if im wrong but I'm guessing that this leak will give the devs most of what they need to start cooking for the Note as well.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
I was thinking the same thing when I saw that article.. The Skyrocket has pretty much the same hardware (except S-pen stuff) as the Note, doesn't it?
Hmmm -- so if the International G-Note gets ICS soon... could we marry to the two different roms to make an LTE Note ICS?
that would be pretty s1ck. Blaah i need to open a programming book.

International means nothing... But releasing it on there can let us know the timeframe. Devs could easily port the skyrocket ics over, but all pen functionality would probably be lost for now. Or, if the right codes are put in, ics is supposed to have the functionality already. If they can open that, then the pen would work like it does now. There would be no special apps however. The reason probably why the att note doesnt have a leak yet is because the apps donot work with ics, so they have to be ported (and with the rom features, like double tap with pen). Might as well try porting the skyrocket release, even though it may be useless very soon.

It's not only about AT&T, there's alot of LTE Note in Canada too. ;-)
I think in some way we can take sime drivers from the international Note, think about it : the cameras, the screen, the s-pen are the same after all? Maybe I'm wrong, I'm not a DEV at all.

When people refer to the AT&T Note, the refer to all North American Note's in general, they are all SGH-i717. Just happens that the majority of them are on AT&T. Any firmware/drivers/roms from the international Note are COMPLETELY (please re-read the last word) incompatible with the North American Note because the only hardware they share is the screen. These things are written and optimized for specific SOC's in which our Note and the international Note do not share.
Glad to see AT&T finally pull their SH$%@#t together and start updates in a timely fashion.

Correct, it is a leak that was provided by rootzwiki. Just an odin flashable executable that flashes the whole system un-rooted. We have it rooted now and a sysdump but thats about as far as we've made it so far.
so are we gonna see devs hop on this rom anytime soon??
When theres a leak, the official should be on its way in no time.

DesignGears is the guy behind several roms that were based on stock, going as far back as Cognition for the Captivate.
He is also, I believe the person who posted the stock recovery images for the Samsung Captivate and came up with the mechanism for recovering the Captivate to stock.
I ran his rom (Cognition) on my Samsung Captivate for at least a year, updating as he released new versions until he stopped development on Froyo and jumped to Gingerbread, around this time, Cyanogen began development and I used Cyanogen instead of Cognition because they supported the Froyo bootloaders, his rom did not after he went to Gingerbread (it required updating the bootloaders).
I even remember a short dialog where I pushed to use the Pacman script from Cyanogen in order to both make his rom download smaller but also so that users had more of a choice as to what apps they wanted on their phone.
DesignGears (DG for short) is one of the key developers that got the Captivate rom development off the ground. While Im sure someone else would have gotten around to it, he is the guy who kicked it off and figured it all out. Dont dis' the guy, if he has a Note and begins development, my hope is that we will start to see more development for the Note. At only three custom roms, all heavily based on stock, we have yet to really see this phone at its full potential.

I agree with OP... custom roms are made by people just in their spare time etc. whos going to be able to make a better ROM, the dozens of professionals Samsung actually pay money to make the ROM or some spotty kid in his spare time? The answer is obvious... even CM isn't as good because it's just based on the work Google already did. And google's work is obviously better because it's made by professionals.

I don't agree with that. There are so many devs in here that are better than the paid devs. Sure there's some that have a rare bug or two bug at least they get fixed in a timely manner on here. Look at the 4.2 debacle by Google.. It took them a whole to fix all the issues with it, when devs here wouldn't release it with that many bugs..
Just my 2 cents

Of course I've tried the CM9, CM10, AOKP and other such ones but the one Samsung offers has better support for the things I use my phone most for such as the camera especially, radio, video playback and all in all its just more stable the custom one's have the phone locking up or rebooting itself sometimes, reported by many users.
Those are the top things I can think of for me maybe your a different type user and these things don't matter for you. Also I like the little extra apps they add the Voice Recorder is really good.

I partially agree with your view, but in case of battery life my current rom CM9 stable is giving me the max life ever and phone's performance is way more higher , and yeah custom roms definitely have more features than stock roms, but custom roms which are not based on Samsung stock roms certainly lack important features like, Wifi direct, fm radio, fully capable H/W decoder (files like .avi are not supported), yeah I know Wifi direct is present in CM9 and yes we can connect but we can't send any files which makes it pointless, likewise there can be several problems in custom roms (even stable one's) which becomes evident when we use it for some time.
And also if battery life going haywire after installation of a custom roms is a common issue try wiping the battery stat file, or just charge the phone from low battery a couple of times.

After having my GSII for almost 2 years I am about to use my upgrade and get the S4. I have read many bad reviews about the lag and there is no easy/safe way around the bootloader. But this device has a lot of bloatware and I imagine once the kinks are all worked out, the S4 will be just as good as the S2 when it was released.

Actually I started this thread because I wanted to know if its even worth getting the S4. I hadnt posted on here before but I thought I could get peoples opinion on it.
Well if this were the place to talk about a different device you'd be right. There's a general forum in the main xda site. That'd be the place. In a device specific forum isn't.

I really don't believe the lagging issue. I've tried hand-on with the S4 at the local store and honestly I didn't see any lag. The device is a beauty. If I'm getting the S4, I wouldn't want to mess it up by rooting or installing custom on it just yet.

Agreed, I would wait for custom ROMs to mature for a bit before switching.

That's what I'm doing with my One, solely for the fact that there's no ruu for stock yet. Otherwise I would.

I switched to S4 last week and couldn't be happier. Zero lag out of the box. Used it stock for a day then rooted and froze the bloat with TiBu. Using nova launcher.
This thing flies. Looking forward to some custom roms when the bootloader is unlocked, which should be released in the next few weeks.

Really, guys?
I'm waiting for HTC Two or even Three, which has retractable screen. LOL
I'm hoping someone besides LG makes the next Nexus. I figure we should get word this week, or soon anyway.
I just replaced my old i777 with a S4 this week.
The i777 was a great great phone. I will always appreciate its 18 months of solid service.
But the S4 is going to get AMAZING AOSP thanks to Google's help SOOOO time to move on.
Bye i777!!!!!

I'm actually really hesitant to switch to the S4 or the HTC one. I've been reading up on their forums, and both phones seem to have their fair share of issues. Quality Control with the One in terms of gaps and dead pixels, but it's fairly durable and there's decent Dev support for it. The S4 is prone to cracked screens, and the locked bootloader is really killing any desire to get that phone. Whatever exploit was posted by djrbliss will be patched quickly, rendering it useless. Seems like I should just go with an S3 or a Note 2. I don't think I can spend around $700 on the stock Google S4 from the play store.

This is in no way a rant or an accusation of any of the developers for this phone, this is an honest question.
Will we ever see fully functional project butter on this phone? I remember reading a while back In the dev thread that it would require some work to fit our specific device. Is anyone working on it? Ive been keeping an eye on the dev thread for jelly bean but haven't seen anything about project butter probably since chad posted something about it when we first got jelly bean. I understand that the devs are busy with their everyday lives, and the time they spend out of their day developing is awesome for the community! I'm just wondering what needs to be done for project butter on the rezound, and if there is anyway for someone like me with only a small bit of knowledge but a decent amount of time available to help in some way to bring butter to this phone.

Working on it ....
Slowly. Cameras pretty much are the only thing that is missing and highly doubt there will ever be a build with a working front face cam.
If you see something that refers to an ION build of JB, that's project butter.

You just gotta produce a few more roms. Chick's dig it when guys bury their hands in some code.
I'm running Tron 2.1 with Funky 3.3 kernel with "lag-free" as the governor, and my Rezound feels real smooth and gets great battery life. 90% as good as my Nexus 7, I would say.

If your cameras work, you're on a PMEM build (no project butter). ION builds (meaning project butter) have camera issues at this point in development. From what I've heard ION builds are a significant amount smoother than the current PMEM builds.
