I don't like custom roms because they don't have all the features the official firmwares offer and the camera quality is lower I do lots of video and pictures with my phone.

Custom ROMs have more features than stock, also you can use 3rd party camera apps, like Camera JB+, Camera360, whatever.

Dude you've either been smoking crack or you haven't actually tried ANY custom roms.
I agree with OP... custom roms are made by people just in their spare time etc. whos going to be able to make a better ROM, the dozens of professionals Samsung actually pay money to make the ROM or some spotty kid in his spare time? The answer is obvious... even CM isn't as good because it's just based on the work Google already did. And google's work is obviously better because it's made by professionals.

I don't agree with that. There are so many devs in here that are better than the paid devs. Sure there's some that have a rare bug or two bug at least they get fixed in a timely manner on here. Look at the 4.2 debacle by Google.. It took them a whole to fix all the issues with it, when devs here wouldn't release it with that many bugs..
Just my 2 cents

LOL you think a random kid on XDA is going to be a better developer than someone who is PAID by samsung/google to write code for them? yea noooo. i dont have any custom ROMS because why would I choose to use something worse than I get from the start, only rooting is worth it every other custom ROM I have tried has had less features, worse performance and worse battery than stock... cant believe people still use them tbh.

haha no. my battery was awful because of the ROM not because I use it for a day, i used samsung stock for a day and had great battery. erm well samsung galaxy s II is a SAMSUNG phone and so there would be no galaxy II forum.. and galaxy s II is by far the most popular forum so if there was no samsung there would be an XDA but XDA would just be way smaller. this site is basically dedicated to the s II anyway most other android phones suck tbh and google knows that, thats why they let other companies use android so they can benefit from their work... apple does all the work themselves and still makes better phones.
another pointless thread..... i had a poo and it almost ripped my ring appart. thats was way more useful information

And if you love apple so much, go get an icrap.

Of course I've tried the CM9, CM10, AOKP and other such ones but the one Samsung offers has better support for the things I use my phone most for such as the camera especially, radio, video playback and all in all its just more stable the custom one's have the phone locking up or rebooting itself sometimes, reported by many users.
Those are the top things I can think of for me maybe your a different type user and these things don't matter for you. Also I like the little extra apps they add the Voice Recorder is really good.

I partially agree with your view, but in case of battery life my current rom CM9 stable is giving me the max life ever and phone's performance is way more higher , and yeah custom roms definitely have more features than stock roms, but custom roms which are not based on Samsung stock roms certainly lack important features like, Wifi direct, fm radio, fully capable H/W decoder (files like .avi are not supported), yeah I know Wifi direct is present in CM9 and yes we can connect but we can't send any files which makes it pointless, likewise there can be several problems in custom roms (even stable one's) which becomes evident when we use it for some time.
And also if battery life going haywire after installation of a custom roms is a common issue try wiping the battery stat file, or just charge the phone from low battery a couple of times.

Hey guys!
I just received my Galaxy Note from AT&T (previously a T-Mobile G2 user), and am wondering about custom ROMs.
I used a MIUI ROM on my G2 with T-Mobile, but am more interested in ICS and the international capabilities of the Note (Premium suite, apps, etc). Do we not get those apps?
Are there any custom ROMs you guys would recommend for a new user?
Thanks!

Start Here:
Get CWM installed - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223
This is the most stock ICS (an a good solid ROM to start with):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664980
This is the best (IMHO) of the ICS ROMs. It's due for an update very shortly - but it's the only one to really take advantage of the capability of ICS to handle tablet mode:

I understand. I'm not new to ROMs, but I find it easier to ask for opinions than to try flashing endless ROMs. I'm having a hard time believing rooting and all is even worth it. But I'm hoping some of you veteran Note users' will provide me with a little more incentive to flash or keep stock.

Your choice but my opinion is as follows. You have a great device with capabilities far beyond those which it was sold with(GB), so you could stay with your awesome device and never know its "full" potential. Adversely, you could unleash the beast with a little research and gumption... Think portable wireless hotspots and ease of use modifications and custom works allowing you to customize your device. With stock gb it generally takes 2 to 4 more steps to achieve the same goal in custom GB. Same with ICS... These are my opinions and individual experience may vary... Ultimately its up to you how excited about your device you get, and how much research you do to ensure a great experience.

Yeah I ended up trying a few, and nothing seemed stable enough. We won't have to wait too much longer for ICS and premium suite I am sure!
I say if you're fine with GB go with unofficial rom. Best laid out in my opinion and with holokernel incredibly fast and smooth. For ics I say forget about your s pen and try cm9. I missed notes at the beginning but with how fluid everything is and problem free of a build this is I try not to think of that plastic pen jammed into my phone and just enjoy ics for what it is and what it should be on any android phone without all the little touches manufacturers throw in trying to make their phone a special snowflake in an industry of special individual snowflakes. Just my two cents anyhow

As has been stated, an official release is required for source code (at least, thats how Samsung does it).
Source code allows tweaking of the kernel for things like over clocking (which is probably the most OVERRATED functionality that tweaking the kernel will provide - case in point, give me a real world application where the Note isnt fast enough - its fine if you want to look at numbers but that is as useless to me as the Windows Experience Index - its a waste of time) and potentially correcting some of the issues this phone has (black crush and inaccurate stylus).
But, as is the usual case, the people that CANT seem to understand this will continue to make the usual 'just flash a custom rom and be done with it' statements. There are a few of us that are fine with the official rom. I think Samsung has done a decent job with Touchwiz and the software FROM SAMSUNG is actually good. Rooting and removing of the ATT crap however is something I have been considering.
I WILL say that a REAL version of Cyanogen would be great, Im just not interested in it until they have some source code for the kernel and can actually do a real build.
With the official release of ICS for the Galaxy S2 having come just yesterday, and the fact that it REQUIRES flashing via Kies (Samsung's version of Itunes), Im guessing the Note is only a week or two away.

For testing purposes I want to load a pre-ICS ROM on my GalaxyS3. I need the flash built in that got dropped with ICS.
Has anyone tried this? If so, what are recommended ROMs?
If no one has done this, what ROMs are closest to what the S3 runs and would stand the greatest chance of working?
Thanks,

to be equally fair, i'm in the same boat. i had a captivate for a while, loved the gb roms i flashed constantly to find my favourite. bought an s2 and absolutely love the phone. i hard bricked my previous s2, i dont think i had the right kernel, something i did was for a non canadian version of the s2. after i sold that one i bought another brand new s2. the s3 was around for a little while at this point but my girlfriend has a galaxy nexus and her sister an s3 and i just dont like the way ics and jb look, feel and operate. it felt like switching from windows to a mac after using windows for years. i would go to close a window and the 'x' was in the upper left and not right like windows.
its a personal opinion, i'm sure in many ways firmwares past gb are better in many quantifiable ways, but i just dont like em. not to mention the stupid physical home button like some loser iphone. i love the 4 backlit buttons that samsung uses on many devices like the blu ray player i have. it's just awesome.
anyway, long story short - is there any other demand worth warranting a dev to make a gb rom for phones past that version of android?
in closing, think of the amount of roms out there for the captivate which are based on froyo people still use. gb ics and even jb roms are available but many people still prefer the look and feel of froyo.
anyway, long story short - is there any other demand worth warranting a dev to make a gb rom for phones past that version of
Got a couple of thousand to spare might interest a dev otherwise not likely .

After having my GSII for almost 2 years I am about to use my upgrade and get the S4. I have read many bad reviews about the lag and there is no easy/safe way around the bootloader. But this device has a lot of bloatware and I imagine once the kinks are all worked out, the S4 will be just as good as the S2 when it was released.

Well if this were the place to talk about a different device you'd be right. There's a general forum in the main xda site. That'd be the place. In a device specific forum isn't.

I really don't believe the lagging issue. I've tried hand-on with the S4 at the local store and honestly I didn't see any lag. The device is a beauty. If I'm getting the S4, I wouldn't want to mess it up by rooting or installing custom on it just yet.

Agreed, I would wait for custom ROMs to mature for a bit before switching.

That's what I'm doing with my One, solely for the fact that there's no ruu for stock yet. Otherwise I would.

I switched to S4 last week and couldn't be happier. Zero lag out of the box. Used it stock for a day then rooted and froze the bloat with TiBu. Using nova launcher.
This thing flies. Looking forward to some custom roms when the bootloader is unlocked, which should be released in the next few weeks.

Really, guys?
I'm waiting for HTC Two or even Three, which has retractable screen. LOL
I'm hoping someone besides LG makes the next Nexus. I figure we should get word this week, or soon anyway.
I just replaced my old i777 with a S4 this week.
The i777 was a great great phone. I will always appreciate its 18 months of solid service.
But the S4 is going to get AMAZING AOSP thanks to Google's help SOOOO time to move on.
Bye i777!!!!!

I'm actually really hesitant to switch to the S4 or the HTC one. I've been reading up on their forums, and both phones seem to have their fair share of issues. Quality Control with the One in terms of gaps and dead pixels, but it's fairly durable and there's decent Dev support for it. The S4 is prone to cracked screens, and the locked bootloader is really killing any desire to get that phone. Whatever exploit was posted by djrbliss will be patched quickly, rendering it useless. Seems like I should just go with an S3 or a Note 2. I don't think I can spend around $700 on the stock Google S4 from the play store.

What do you think about the update 4.2.2 for S3 that is taking so much time? Is Samulsung making a big trouble for this fantastic smartphone?

Samsung is not going 4.2.2, they are going to go to 4.3 for the updates and will be announced in September. In the following months, 5.0 will follow. But as always, it's up to the carriers in the U.S to allow the updates to be pushed.
The carriers "demand" that changes are made. This is mostly because of their bloatware and cell technologies and how much the carrier wants to track their customers.

Yea you're right.. but i already have 4.2.2 GlamourS4 rom that it's fantastic rom.
I'm really unhappy for the updates to the Galaxy S3 stock. They're making only minors updates of 4.1.2 and i feel like the official update is gonna to never be released... probably when the official update rolles out i'll go back to stock firmware, but it's not sure....

LOLZ i don't like the S4... it's so mich similar to the S3 lte and i think that the goodies that they've added are so stupid and pointless... bah
Yea it's faster, smoother... but the screen and the size are so f***ing similar!

I agree many of their releases are minor especially since many tw features are gimmicks. They are also usually really slow and scanning an sdcard through my pc is extremely slow/buggy.
AOSP 4.3 roms out now and are stable, much faster, have better battery, and many more options less the tw features I personally don't use (although you may). Surprisingly, the regular camera is finally decent too. Every time I go back to stock I wonder why I did after a week.

Hmm...I love my S4. People who don't own the device complain about the so-called "pointless features and gimmicks". The people who actually own it aren't complaining.
Anyway, I agree with DonPuri above. As long as Samsung has a newer device out, the S4, I don't see any significant updates coming to the S3. It's all about money. It's not just Samsung that does that, all the smartphone companies do this.
If Samsung comes out with an S5, S4 won't see any real updates either. That's how it goes.

You're loving your S4? Tell me, who goes on the streets doing weird moves with his head like a moron trying to use some of these really POINTLESS features? Did you ever tried to do something like that? Dude, if you do that, someone will say "Hey what the heek, r u okay?"
I'll buy an S5 but only if there are USELESS and WORKING features. See also for Android 5 KLP... the S5 will go out with it.
But i still thinking that Samsung is doing a big trouble... they've updated the S2 PLUS at 4.2.2! What the hell! ...

I don't trust AOSP 4.3 roms just yet. While they may be stablish, they are not quite the same "stable" you would expect of a stock ROM. Still, I am very much tempted and curious about the speed it offers. If that new update doesn't arrive soon, maybe I will try it out.

Yeah, like I said, I'm loving my S4. You sound like someone stuck on a contract and can't upgrade your device. And what if the S5 has the same features or more than the the S4? I really didn't see the point of your post. All I see is a bunch of caps and other nonsense. But the what I said stands, S3 won't be getting any real updates. No need to bash my device because you don't like that fact. It's not my fault, blame Samsung. When manufacturers come out with a newer version of a device, they rarely upgrade the older version. If Samsung does upgrade your device, well good for you.
Not that it's relevant to you or anything but all so-called "pointless" features can be turned off on the S4. Besides that stuff, it really is a nice phone. Fancy features are nice but as a device for ordinary, everyday use, it works very well and in the end that's all that matters to me.
You're fine, the features can be disabled, but i mean what utily has a smartphone with a lot of features when you don't use them? If you don't use them it means that are pointless... i don't like the S4 not because i have a S3, but for the fact that i don't so much differences between this 2 smartphones. You have a S4? Good you have a lot of money to spent for a phone (no offense
For me the S3 still a very good phone for daily use... so...

Is an carrier-official 4.2.2 not out for the S3 already? I thought at least att in the states had put out an update 1-2 months ago.
There is an official update to 4.2.2 for the S3, but it's only a leaked rom and it isn't very stable and smooth...
