[Q] Photo Geotagging question - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
I've purchased a S3 over the weekend and have a question about geotagging on the s3.
I've come from a Desire HD and have used a One X and I've noticed the HTC phones do Geo Tagging without the need of GPS (I am guessing it uses Google locations?). The S3 seems like it will only do geo tagging when the GPS is on. Is there a way to do it like HTC? I rather not use GPS, I fear it uses too much battery.

The native camera app only does gos tagging (requires you to turn it on) whether or not it always uses it, android has clever little tracking shortcuts that save you battery.
Yoy can always try another camera app from the market and see if thar doesn't, try Camera 360.

What do you mean about tracking shortcuts?

Like, using local wifi hotspots as a basepoint, internal sensor information. Cellular towers, and your location in regards to them. Look in Settings -> Location services.
It depends how fine a location the app wants which information is used. Given that photo taking is a few second thing, and it takes longer to find enough satellites to get an acvurate position, I don't think it uses much.

google maps using a lot of my battery

This is the second day in a row google maps is the top app user of battery (behind screen of course).... the kicker is I have never even opened the app! Overall the battery life is still very good, but I don't get why maps is using my battery if I never use the app... I did open it up to see if I could force it to close, but I didn't see anything. Anyone else have this issue? I have the phone on wifi most of the day if that matters.
I noticed that too. Be sure you're signed out of the latitude layer. Also consider disabling geo tagging in the camera app settings...
Holy cow, there are a bunch of settings to turn off in maps. Who knew? Been noticing maps using battery also, but it didn't occur to me to go into its menu and look around.
i was curious about that.. the only thing i could think of was its the gps from the weather widget and it was labeled as maps instead of gps

that might be it, I signed out of lattitude and fixed the setting so it so it didn't update my location. Thanks for the tip, hope that fixes it
You should be able to report the app from the battery usage screen. Tap Google maps and report should be on the top right.
I do that whenever one of my app is misbehaving. It will help the devs fix the bug.

Mine was super dead and wouldn't even turn on when Received mine, I let it charge all night and unplugged it this morning and am down to 64% after 3 hours and 30 minutes of heavy use. I notice that it also was at 92% when I unplugged it so far better than the 3d but we shall see after a weeks worth of use or so.

I just did this, for a while I had location detection off.... but I like to be able to google search a business or place and have it show me the nearest locations of that business.... and that doesn't work if you turn off location detection... not to mention the weather lock screen doesn't work.... so right now my only solution is to leave the location detection on and live with maps eating my batter in the background.... I'm waiting a few more months to let the various dev created roms mature a bit before I try something other than stock sense
This happened to me several days in a row I don't use latitude and I reported it...I'm confused to be honest.

I am having the same issue and I am curious if you fixed it. I have Sony Xperia Twith ICS but I guess this is not related to the mobile. What settings are needed to stop this high battery consumption?
Thanks,

If you use ROM toolbox, you can go to auto-starts and disable all the receivers for Google maps (or most of them, you choose which specific receivers). I think there are like 16 different receivers.

+1...I have every start up event disabled for Maps in autostarts (available in play store) and it doesn't start unless I launch it myself. You could freeze it with titanium backup also, but then you'll need to defrost whenever you wanna use it which can be annoying.

Transferring files using NFC

I have two EVO LTE phones and when I bump the backs together they play an audible tone and vibrate so I know they are connecting with NFC but I can not for the life of me figure out how to transfer a file from one phone to the other. Does anyone have experience with this and can explain how to do it? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Can't transfer files only smaller things like vCards, browser links, youtube links. HTC hasn't added the ability to add other things yet. Samsung built on Beam using wifi direct so i would be surprised to see HTC come up with a similar solution or a app to assist the

Thank you but I still can't even manage to transfer a v-card. Doesn't bring up a menu or anything when the phones are within range. I'm not sure this will be useful at all then accept for google wallet type of functions.

Make sure both phones have the NFC turned on then pull up the contact or the web page(looks like ICS internet and chrome only work - dolphin wouldnt) then touch the backs of the phones together. It will push the item to the back of the screen and then touch the screen and it will beam it to the other phone. You can do the same with some apps as well and it will push app to the playstore. Cant wait till you can beam photos and files.

There is an app on the market called 'File Expert" that allows you to do it but I think when doing larger files bluetooth is faster. but hey if you wanna play. here is a toy.
I really can't wait to beam photos

(Easily overlooked) Wifi Direct [10/16/12 - recommended app added]

Like the NFC aspect (outside of G-Wallet use), I wanted to bring another feature that is likely to be glossed over.
Some of you coming from an Epic Touch, might be familiar with this or people who've used Ad-Hoc.
Edit: (An app to take advantage of this ability (in beta) but it works well.

We have don't have any apps that really support it right now. Games support it though for multiplayer.

The same, it's just re-labled. They may have some pre-programmed tasks for it's use. It's present in the Samsung GS2.
Edit:
S-Beam is limited in function as it will only use it's main functions with other SGS3 handsets.

Seems like we need an app to make this work. Ive connected to other devices but I cant send anything due to no app to control the function
Glad I'm not the only one, lol.I can set up a group and connect but can't seem to find anyway to transfer data via WiFi Direct.

Ditto. Has anyone figured this out I want to try it.
This Sucks
This really Sucks to have such a great feature bit no way to use it.... ive spent alot of time trying to figure it out but i couldnt..... i really hope someone figures this out....
My friend and I were messing with this over the weekend, he has an SIII I have the EVO. Turning it on and pairing the devices up works great, but when he would try to send a picture (WiFi Direct gets added to the standard Share menu on the SIII) it would just hang on his end until it timed out. I tried sending a file, but get no WiFi Direct option in the share menu of the EVO.
He also had a place to control some settings, one of them was "File Sharing" and he had to turn that on before we were able to attempt to send files.
Sucks that this doesn't work - it could be really cool especially if my wife and I want to pass photos around to each other that we have taken of the kids.
Makes no sense to add this ability with no way to use it..
I agree. I can pair with my brothers 4G LTE but cant transfer anything between the phones...
What happened to InfraRed on phones? I used to use that all the time to transfer stuff and contacts!

BT was the next thing after IR and now apparently its this...except for the part where it works.
Here you go

Have you downloaded the app and been able to use it? I downloaded it and downloaded it on my co workers EVO LTE, but still can't get it to transmit. The wifi icon does not show up in the share menu like the you tube video shows. Not sure if I'm doing it wrong...

Android GPS Problem

Hi, does anyone know why my car android system GPS is showing an incorrect time please? I have the android time and zone set to manual +1 BST. The picture shows the GPS Test app with the UTC and local times completely wrong to the actual time in the UK.
Thanks
Could the GPS is taken it's time from the gps sat instead of locally set time..

I have checked my android device and I don't have this gps.config file. Anyway, I have tried a number of sat nav apps and they all seem to work off the local time. The Tom Tom app seems to always show an arrival time 2 hours behind which is what prompted this original post.
I prefer the tomtom app which is why this issue is annoying. Any more suggestions?

Did you check the tomtom forum?

I have been on the TomTom forum and had no joy there.
Maybe your device take it's time coordinates from the radio, like RDS.
Or it's just not supported.
Edit; disconnecting the satnav for an reset seems to work on some devices.

That appears to be an Enco / EWay device, possibly for an e46. I have an Enco B046, which presents the same issue. The UTC time reported by the GPS is incorrect, and is actually off by 14 hours on my system. TomTom uses the time from the GPS to determine your time of arrival. Nothing like going on a 1 hour trip, leaving at 2PM, and having TomTom tell you you'll arrive at 1AM.
I'm pretty sure the GPS driver is poorly-written. It doesn't report location accuracy, which is why Google Maps / Navigation will not let you use Turn-By-Turn (driveabout) mode. Google Maps looks for ACCURACY_FINE to be true, which is defined as...I can't remember, but like, 40 meters accuracy or less, or something. The GPS driver on these units reports null, or possibly 0, depending on how it's extrapolated, for the location accuracy.
It's a system called Andrive which is very much similar. I think the firmware is faulty which the supplier is looking into although very slowly.

Some assistance regarding apps

Hey guys, can ya'll recommend me some apps that can allow me to call/text over Wifi?
long story short- im turning my GNEX into a 24/7 wifi entertainment device but i figured "hey why not use wifi for communications instead of a sim card?"
i want apps that avoid using my phone number (unless for a one time activation or whatever) because my number+sim is in another phone now unless that doesnt even matter really;
[i think google voice involves that ^]
I've used viber before, but just wanted to know more apps from more knowledgable users in the VoIP world i suppose
p.s
most if not all of these apps require my "contacts" to have the same application installed as well right?
bump, anyone?
I think pretty much every app of that genre requires the other user to have the same app.
If you want to avoid using your phone number as an identifier and still a great popularity, so that you'll be able to talk with many if not all your acquaintances, your best option is probably Facebook Messenger.
