I DL'd Quadrant the other day to see what exactly is going on with my phone, between the lag, the messed up GPS/compass, and no word on when we're getting an update to fix all this mess.
And I find that the CPU is only running at 800 MHz. Has anyone else had this problem? Can I fix it w/o rooting?
I'm going to be calling TMo (who I normally have many wonderful things to say about) and chewing some butt, but I want opinions from in here first.
the phone supports variable clock rates so at times it will throttle down and run at lower than 1ghz...same thing your laptop and desktop often do without you being aware of it.
CPU does not run at 1gig hertz all the time, it only runs as fast as it's required. Save's on battery life and with heat issues.
The GPS fix and 2.2 should be released next month. Probably within the first two weeks.
You can overclock your CPU but it will still run scaled and you will need to root. Running at full speed all the time is not good especially with passive cooling.
What the guy said above. NO electronic device runs at max speed all the time.

I am aware of the reasons the phone might exhibit this behavior.
However, I've never seen it run at anything BUT 800 MHz, and I've been checking it fairly regularly. This means I'll be doing something with the phone and in the middle of what I'm doing I'll stop and check the CPU speed.
So aside from a general "Yeah dude, you can expect that" has anyone seen their Vibrant run at 1 GHz? Or at a speed other than 800 MHz?

That's a lovely rumor, and I'd love to believe it. However, given Samsung's record of customer support I'm sure you will understand my extremely healthy dose of skepticism.
And I'm afraid that even an official announcement would be viewed with suspicion until I've had the update for a week and had a chance to test it.

Why you buy this phone if you don't trust Samsung?
After you mentioned this I did check to see and I was able to hit 1g. Used system panel and with that open I quickly scrolled up and down untill I hit 1 ghtz.

Because at the time I DID trust them.
Then the Behold II upgrade got canceled, and I got this thing with a non-working GPS. TMobile (despite all the things I love about them) has always had a very hard time getting state of the art phones in for anything other than Windmobile (something I have zero interest in). When they got a 1GHz phone in with a large screen I was there on opening day.
I'm a heavy GPS user and to say that I'm extremely disappointed would be an understatement. I am hoping that a software upgrade will fix everything, but at this point one has not been announced. I would hope that if it were 2 weeks out that more than wishful thinking or internet rumor would surface.

A software update has been announced. It was actually announced 2 or 3 weeks ago via Samsung on Twitter and all of the major tech blogs and sites posted it as well.
Also, people have posted that some newer versions of the firmware in different territories have the problem totally fixed.
Also, remember the G1 had this exact same problem when it was released. 3 months later it was corrected with an OTA. So don't get discouraged.
Seriously of you have problems with gps, go to the development section here and download eugene's rom for vibrant 9. Without any steps messing with configuration through setup menus I just turn on use wireless signal and gps and am locked within 10 meters in only 3-10 seconds. Don't want to root? Grow up its a development board, there is more then over way to "unroot" your phone back to stock and you can then return the phone on any issue you like, thankfully due to rooting and that rom it won't be from gps issues.

^ I don't understand why people who don't want to root go on XDA and complain about it. Go to androidcentral or androidcommunity who are sites towards non-rooted (no offense to any of those websites at all).
Every electronic device that gets released will NEVER be perfect because there will always be a problem about it that somebody will always complain about. Samsung has responded to the GPS problem already, it takes time to roll the OTAs out. There is a fix as what "poopypants" said. It's been out.
What's a normal temp for this phone to be at? Mine just got to 105 degrees farenheit. What is too hot for this phone?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
105 degrees is not very hot for any electronics device. A typical CPU in a desktop computer will reach much higher than that.
Typos and other gibberish courtesy of Swype
I have to agree with Col.Kernel to a degree and understand why he feels the way he does. I've had several Samsung devices. Granted my last one was the Samsung Omnia before getting the Vibrant.
But this isn't a Samsung issue only. Between the legal crap, your cell carrier, and the bottom line, your lucky to see any updates to a device they want you to upgrade in 1 - 2 years. I've had way too many phones that were supposed to be getting updates that never did. If the Vibrant gets it then great. If not, then it didnt ruin my day b/c I dont expect it. One good thing about Samsung Mobile is that in the past I've seen them release updates on their website that wasn't authorized or sent OTA thru the cell carrier. That bumps my hope meter up a bit.
Back on topic, I havent noticed my phone staying at 800mhz but this sucker sure does get hot. Especially when plugged in. reminds me of a Dell laptop I used to have that used to burn your legs if you used it in your lap. LoL

May just be me but I've noticed with the update to 4.5, when using navigation, it causes the entire phone to lock up. Have downgraded to the previous version, no issues. Any thoughts?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Everytime I've ever had issues I've used Rom Manager and the Fix Permissions option.
Of course you need to be rooted to perform.
thanks for the tip, I am rooted, will give it a shot.
I had lock ups every time I had gps enabled with 4.4, 4.0 and 4.5. I've downgraded and then gone back to the most recent, and they all mess their shorts more often than not. 4.5 even locks up sometime when GPS isn't on. I was on the phone with those geniuses at T-mo tech support a few hours ago because I'm tired of lock ups, and lagging so bad system wide that I'm missing calls. They had nothing for me except sending me my third phone in 6 weeks. I'm tired of this garbage; I purchased my phone with the even more plus plan, which is fine, as I've lived outside the country long enough and purchased enough phones at the real world non subsidized price that I'm totally cool with spending 5 bills on good tech. But I do have a problem with spending that much and having to carry my 2 year old Blackberry Bold so I can make a damn call or you know, get some directions without the phone puking. And I feel some kind of way about basically voiding my warranty to flash a rom on there to get the phone to work as it should from the bloody manufaturer (no irony there, yeah?)
I just hope that this GPS fix and froyo come down the pike soon, because I don't have much more before I pay this phone off, toss it and t-mo in the street, and then try not to vomit when I join my wife on ATT and get an iphone. Most of the time when we go someplace I'm having to use her phone because mine is busy either locking up or deciding whether I can make a call or not. I'm not a big apple fan, but at least you can make a phone call or use maps without any undue drama. I'm sorry for the rant, but this is ridiculous.

Here are a few problems I have with the amaze so far...
1) Fluctuating service. I hate this. I will have all the bars showing and then all of a sudden I get no service. What's up with that? The sensation would at least holds two bars at all times. (Oh and no wifi calling!)
2) Overheating issue. This phone gets too hot for no reason. For example I browse for 15 minutes and bam..its really hot. I make sure I exit apps by hitting the back button and my brightness is at 15%. There's no excuse for this.

4) wifi turning off??? I could be on wifi for a good hour and everything is OK, then I turn on the phone again to use it and I'm not connected to wifi anymore. I manually turn wifi on and off to get it to work again.
5) On the bottom in between the menu and back key my amaze has some light leaking through. Its tiny. I didn't notice it until it was completely dark but its there and now I can't help but keep staring at it. I wish I had a camera to take a picture of it.
6) Lastly and the most annoyong thing for me is a clicking sound. When I pick up the phone it sounds like something getting snapped in place. And its almost everytime. Wtf is that. haha.

the no wifi calling thing sucks, will be fixed with root/update so meh
my battery drains about 50% when i'm sleeping, though this may be to mediocre service that goes in and out, going to try and shut mobile network off tonight and see if it fixes the issue
Though I agree with most of the other "problems" ya'll have listed...
I was told by 3 representatives, and one sales person (who sold me the phone) that you have to activate the new sim card included with the device to take advantage of the new wifi-calling that T-Mobile is rolling out (this includes the new GSII on t-mo). - I spoke with so many because none of them could activate the new sim correctly...and were baffled themselves as to why it was so difficult...haha.
Honestly, I havent been able to test wifi calling because the place where I'm renting has never worked with mobile devices, except for apple devices (of course...haha). I may report back here later when i go somewhere else with wifi.
Just wanted to pass on some info I was told by 4 separate people - they all claimed that's what a memo showed on their system when they pull up the AMAZE and GSII.
I come from a mytouch 4g, i have the same issue, suddenly i have no service then it's back on again. Never had that with the mytouch...
Well, I have had mine since launch day. I have a little but not much light bleed. I have had no heating issues. Last night out at bars I saw the signal issue. One sec I could speed test and pull down 14. Then I would notice no 4G symbol, try to speed test again and it would say no signal. Still love it though, nice and fast!!
My buttons light up when it's dark, but not when it's light. Is there anyway to turn this light sensor off and keep these lights on so I can see my home, menu etc buttons?

Definately seems there is a (buttons) light sensor, they do basically stay on at night, not in daytime.
Prolly see some update/option to this in the future, keep em' on or leave to the sensor.

The sim is not controlling the software, but it can affect what information is communicated with t-mobile.
I don't know what you mean by you don't have this feature. Among other ways to activate the hotspot capability, you should find the "Wi-Fi Hotspot" app on the device.
Just to repeat/clarify my original statement/post: The Amaze 4G and the GS II (according to others) allow you to activate the wifi hotspot feature, have your other wifi-enabled devices connect to your phone, but when you try to access the internet with those wifi-enabled devices, you are prompted to upgrade your plan to include the $15/mo. plan.
I hope this is clear to all.
Te whole service popping in and out is starting to drive me nuts!!!! 3 bars of 4g then nthing! 1 bar of 4g then it turns into 2 bars of 2g! WTH!?!?!? Never had soo many reception issues on ANY of my Tmo phones!
Dosent seem to matter where I am when this happens as it happens often, far too often!
I have to assume that of all the connection point inside the back cover of the phone at least ONE of them is some sort of antenna?????
Cmon Tmo?!?!?
Even if it does warm up, I doubt that you will feel it if you put it in a case. Unless the phone is burning up..then yeah.
I am coming from a HTC sensation 4G and it had WiFi calling and WiFi hotspot feature.
The manual that comes with the amaze shows how to use WiFi calling also the one on HTC's site,
If I could put the sensation Rom on the amaze I would be happy as the sensation had what I want working,
I love the feel of the Amaze it feels much more masculine and fits nice in my big hands I find my self not mistakenly touching the softkey's as much.
Also I can seem to figure out where 4gb or the Rom is as it shows only 9gb for storage and 2gb for something else
On another note I have seen a post that shows an Amaze with WiFi calling, the had an earlier firmware,

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but you guys can probably still exchange the Amaze for the SGS2. I'm really not having any of the problems described here. It dropped the GPS once yesterday... that's about it so far.

why would you get flamed. only 99% of the people on this site know more about the devices theyre holding and things their carrier offers to them then the actual employees, one of the most known things probably being the grace period you have to return/swap out your phone if you want... noooo, no reason to be flamed.

To those who are experiencing issues with the Amaze especially after returning it a million times before buyers remorse is up, I recommend testing out the GS2 aka Hercules. Other than the resolution this phone is really great. The resolution isn't that noticeable unless you have OCD.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I jumped ship to the GSII. So far I'm happier. The amaze does have more bells and whistles but it was a bit heavy for me and the GS II has got - not substantially - but improved battery life and a more visually appealing screen. Also my eyes aren't great, so I actually appreciate the lower resolution screen which keeps the icons bigger. I can see the pixels easier than on the qhd of the amaze, but i have to be "looking for them" to really notice.
Some people are having better luck with their Amaze so just like a ton of other companies out there these days...there's a big quality control issue.
Looking service is really getting on my nerves now and i dont like this any more. Wonder if there will a fix for this from HTC or Tmobile
hey everyone, i've had my Captivate since it was released last year, but i really want to upgrade it. i'm a little underwhelmed by the specs of the Galaxy Nexus when compared to the SGSII (which is what i was waiting to compare before i just purchased it).
anyways, are there any nagging issues that i should know about before upgrading (like the GPS issue with the Cappy, even though mine always worked perfectly)?
thanks.
Speaking for myself, this has been an absolutely solid device from the moment I got it. Couldn't be happier...
Not a single issue I can think of.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
no major issues yet but the only thing that people have complained about is some screen issues. There have been lines that seemed to be burned into the screen when you view dark images. I have one but i rarely notice it so I'm not concerned and its not a big deal for me. otherwise, i think thats pretty much it. Any other issue that you have can be checked while at the store so you can exchange it while you are there.
No issues here, upgrading also from a week 1 captivate.

Nope. I haven't even found any minor issues. Rock solid, all the way around.
Only problem I've had is the AP Mobile widget eating up my data even after I turned it off and set the refresh settings to none. Ended up having to root/freeze it just to stop. Samsung and AT&T were of no help. Reading a forum or two here and there shows I'm not alone - but I don't think it is extremely widespread.

I've found the AP Mobile application to be terrible on every device I've used.
Based on my recent experience, I'd have no problem believing that.
I never consider AT&T bloatware to be a "major issue" - even though it's a major deficiency in the out-of-the-box experience, as long as it's fixable, it's not major to me.

If it ends up sending someone over a data limit and costing money, I'd say its a pretty big deal. At least something to keep an eye on.
As a launch-day Captivate user myself, believe me the SGSII is a night and day difference. Especially in the speed and battery departments. Even running stock is a much smoother experience than many of the custom ROMs I had flashed on my Cap.
The build quality seems to be very good, even for an initial run.

Same here, this thing is great. Fast, smooth and great battery. I've ran Cognition and now UnNamed, both are smooth.
I never had any problems with my Captivate other than battery. Unlocked it for my wife to use on T-Mobile and she is getting 24-30 hours on a charge w/3-4hrs display time. The only difference in the set up is the amount of emails and texts when I used it was more than she uses it.
By and large I have had few problems. This is the phone that the Captivate should have been (good GPS and compass and LED flash and front facing camera).
Once I had a problem with GPS acquiring a lock, even with very adequate SNRs as shown by GPS Test (Chartcoss), but it immediately reverted back to great after a reboot.
Occasionally the Facebook app will lag is some aspects, but I can't tell if it is the app or the network.
To OP,
Yes, there are some issues that I have with this phone. Some big, some small but all in all - IMHO not deal breakers...
I'm a 3+ yrs iphone 3G user sitting on the fence between the iphone 4S (pre-release) and SG2. When AT&T announced official release of the SG2 on Oct 2., I made a beeline to two local AT&T stores and both sold out, but they did have the unit on display and when I comared the iphone 4 (non S) vs. the SG2, I instantly fell in love with the Lighter Weight, Larger screen and super thin size of the SG2 over the iphone 4 (non S)...
The problem at hand to answer your question is here:
1. No FM radio - Originally advsertised as an available feature on AT&T website but has been removed. Available on internation i1900 but not on AT&T SGH-I777
2. Samsung DIVE - Samsung's version of lost/stolen phone support *FREE* to all Samsung mobile device yet *CRIPPLED* by AT&T...
3. No visual Voicemail - But then again this is an Android issue not Captivate to SG2 (remember I'm coming off an iphone 3G)
4. NFC missing - Confirmed by AT&T that it was disabled but *supposedly* to return at a later date via firmware update...??? Will update *NERF* the SG2 to comply with APPLE's suit about copyright infringment (this is mere SPECULATION from my part ONLY!!!!)
Makes me MAD that AT&T strips out useful and FREE tools and installs crappy BLOATWARE like AT&T NAVIGATE that I cannot remove wthout ROOTING the phone... Sorry not ready to that just yet but the promise of FREE tethering has me thinking about it...
Samsung has already had to *MOD* some Tablets & phones(?) overseas because one foreign court ruled against Samsung claiming that their OS too closely resembles the IOS and a firmware MOD fixed the SCROLLING method to further distinguish Touchwiz from IOS... Could Samsung/AT&T firmware update that includes NFC then also NERF the UI (if they lose in U.S. Court Case???)
Sorry for rambling on but I think I've answered your questions about my pet peeves with the unit so far I'm really REALLY like the SG2 and after 2 weeks I do NOT have buyers remorse nor do I feel an attraction to the iphone 4S...

thanks for your opinion, but i was merely asking about actual hardware/software problems, not personal opinions about the lack of included apps/features.
I think Google Voice is a million (yes literally a million) times better than the visual voicemail on the iPhone.
I did think of one issue I have had. Its minor, but was really frustrating. The stock android keyboard preinstalled seems to be off. The biggest time for me was that I would try for a c and get a space. I am not a fan of the Samsung keyboard, but Gingerbread Keyboard from the market seemed to fix it.

Hardware/Software problems - REDUX
1. When locked with Passcode or Pattern swipe and then hitting the power button to start the phone, 7 times out of 10 you get the pattern screen, the other 3 times the unit BYPASS the security all together and you can get right in
2. Voice recognition by Voice Action or VLingo, sometimes won't pick up your voice, intermittently strays off of Listen mode (Green) and sits there numbly until you exit restart the VOX
3. Slight BLUISH tint when viewing the SUPER AMOLED screen, when viewing directly on the screen this is a non issue.
4. GPS unit not quite as accurate as my old iphone. Driving around I find the ICON moving OFF road and plowing through houses/buildings on map... This is despite the GPS's S/N ratio is over 85db and locked onto multiple satelites...
IMHO - these issues are NON dealbreakers for me and the more glaring offenders are the missing FM radio and NFC but to each his own...
Good luck...!

Agreed that Google Voice is awesome and in many ways superior to Visual Voicemail, however, why couldn't Google Voice have been built in and tied directly to the phone? Why do CALLS have to be first forwarded behind the scenes to Google Voice in order to access Google Voice's Visual Voicemail...?
That's my only gripe with it, I'm using Google Voice on the phone, but I'm peeved that an extra step was needed... IMHO, but judging from some of the other threads I've been reading, I'm not exactly alone on this thought...

The issue here was with stock settings. If you set a pattern lock, then lock the phone. When you wake the phone, let the screen go back to black, then hit the power button. 100% of the time, if you do it that way (let the screen go off then press power again) you get the standard swipe to unlock and bypass the lock pattern.
There is an easy fix. In the lock screen settings set the timeout to immediate (default is 5 minutes) and it will 100% fix the issue.

Correct me if i am wrong but here is what i see :
1-Battery is descent but if it fails for whatever reason , i have to ship it back to fix the battery . Also not sure in terms of development, what would it mean to not be able to do a battery pull. Also if the battery dies, gotta wait for it to charge
2-This is the only HTC phone that does NOT do surf and talk on 3g
3-No micro sd , i am on unlimited and i was planning on buying full price to keep it , but in the future if they decide to screw us over and take it away completely ( verizon is not exactly loyal to their customers ) I am pretty much SOL.
4- No bluetooth and simultaneous aux in like the rezound had. SO if I am in the car and I have my bluetooth paired and the aux in , it will not route my music to the aux port like the rezound did and route my phone calls to my bluetooth.
So what do the new owners think, did i get it right ?

#1 Pretty much just like the iPhone... There is a certain button combo you press/hold that will act as a "battery pull". I'm not sure what it is off the top of my head since I haven't had to do it (I have a Rezound).
#2 The only plus about the fixed back is the phone will definitely feel sturdy! I've got an extended battery on my Rezound and man it's annoying how squeaky it is.
#3 Hope they don't mess with unlimited. I don't use much storage luckily. I just checked my Rez and I only had a few GB's used total between the internal and external storage.
#4 I couldn't get that to work on my Rezound... Either I'm doing it wrong or maybe it's how my car handles it?
The only thing that has me questioning hitting the pre-order button is how often I will need to use voice/data over 3G (since this doesn't have the ability). Decisions decisions...

If you are like me and depend on google nav all the time driving , you will need it . 4g is not very reliable driving across state lines and if u get a phone call and need to re route - well then you to make a decision between which one is more imp ... doing it once might not be a big deal , but on a long road trip might become really irritating .
That's a good point... I never thought of it affecting me that way.

See we would still be having the same issues .
Any my experience is with HTC is that sometimes they refuse to release a bootloader unlock tool .
I am afraid not as many developer will jump on this because of 1- release of note in the same time 2- release of nexus 4 in the same time 3- how exclusive this device is to verizon . Now you narrowed it down to a handfull of devs that have to do the following : Unlock bootlaoder if htc refuses to it , port a custom recovery to it , and of course root it and then here is the biggest problem , FIX THE RIL TO WORK WITH AOSP .
Over in the rezound world that took a year and if it wasnt for Chad , they would have never had it . and the signal is still shakey.

1. The new batteries that are coming out with the new phones are like night and day. HTC (not just HTC) are starting to use new batteries with better technology (I'm sure some on XDA could answer this question with details). Apple is no longer the king of battery technology if you get the hint.
2. You are going to see this more and more with Verizon phones. Verizon should have the nation coverage with 4g by the end of 2013.
3. Many of the cell phone manufacturers are moving to cloud service and you will see more of this in the future. The carriers need to reconsider their data plans in the future. Verizon knows about this phone and many others that are coming down the pipe line with no SD card slot.
4. I have not tried bluetooth and simultaneous aux with the DNA. So I'm not sure about this. But HTC had to upgrade the Beats software because it seems to be louder and much more clearer. I also don't have a buzzing sound between songs like on the Rezound.
good question

If you head over to the verizon gs3 forums you will see a sticky with a ridiculous donation amount ( i think in the range of thousands ) to get one of the most elite devs to unlock the boodloader( ADAM ) . I am not sure if we will be that lucky again
Then comes the part where the RIL has to be adjusted to suit verizon weird 3g cdma tech that doesn't like AOSP very much
Till all that happens , you are stuck with touch wiz on note II which is plagued with its own set of problems
Here is what i am referring to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760568&highlight=bounty+unlock

I'm going to call BS on this but will gladly eat my words if you can show me a valid source for your information on this new and mysterious HTC battery tech.

I feel like verizon is losing more devs because of their stunts. I hate to say this but the time will come when we have to chose between the network and dev.
They lock all their bootloaders by requesting the manufacturer to do so. Their last stunt with the loss of unlimited plans bec of an upgrade made lose a whole lot more ( ATT customers can upgrade and keep their unlimited and tmobile have the choice of unlimited 4g for extra 20 a month ).
But as of now the GS3 has amazing development , i just hate the phone its self , piss poor reception. If you have good reception then its a haven for dev.
Here is my advice , WHEN YOU A BUY A PHONE, know this , make sure u will love it as is , in its pure native stock form . Relying on verizon devs is becoming more and more scarce in comparison to the Tbolt days.

You are going to call BS on this??? Ok take a battery from a phone that is 3 to 4 years old with the same mah and you tell me it's the same technology????That's just common sense. What you just said is, if I went to Wal-Mart and bought a name brand battery and then bought a off brand battery. The off brand battery would out last the name brand? Not sure what is BS on this, but that's up to you.
Yeah my battery really sucks.... NOT..

LIsten i am sorry about the other dude. To all who has came out here and clarified my doubts , thank you for taking the time out ! none of you had any obligations to do so and you answered all my questions perfectly ....
I love XDA for that ..
To be honest, if you have the coin to buy the DNA at full price and concerned about the Dev community associated with the device, leaving vzw and unlimited data is the best route. For years I've been a users of more than 5 gbs per month on Verizon's network, and I was getting closer typo 9 per month with lte phones. But now that phones can handle having the Wi-Fi radio on all day without murdering the battery, staying under3gb/month isn't that big of a deal at all. Between the beastly one x+, the option for unlocked international phones, being able to use true nexus devices, etc. I couldn't be happier. The DNA is a great phone, but the concerns you have (including the big one, simultaneous voice and data) it does sound like art would suit your needs better.
However, if att blows in your area or had a bass experience with them in the past, then by all means, disregard everything I've just said

While I do completely agree with what you're trying to say, your facts here are a little goofy. The bootloader unlock took 3 weeks from release date.....pretty damn good if you ask me. Yes, people did pool together a lot of money for it, because they all wanted it that bad. It was a bounty, not that "it cost thousands of dollars". And I also run AOSP only on my gs3, not a single problem with it.
Unlocking the bootloader is night and day difference on the manufacturer though. That was a Samsung device....this is obviously HTC. S-off is a completely different creature all together. I had a Evo 4g, Thunderbolt, and Rezound, (along with other manufacture devices) and they are always puzzling.
To say that we're gonna lose devs to the Nexus 4 could be a bit overzealous seems you're talking about people jumping ship and canceling contracts/switching providers for a phone. It happens but not nearly as often as you think. Believe me, we'll still have plenty of devs for it. Currently the only device in the US market with BOTH 1080p screen AND S4 Pro Quad processor.....it'll attract some attention
You can almost guarentee we'll have Team Bamf onboard here too......
EDIT - and I was also under the impression that it does have simultaneous voice and data?!?!
