OPERATION: Make Our Selves Heard (#OPMOSH)
DISCLAIMER:
We here, in the movement of #OPMOSH do not consider this spam, we do not consider this slandering Moto, we simply use this as a method of having our concerns heard. Motorola Mobility Inc. has been a powerful company that has been around for a very long time, and one we hope to see long in the future as well, before and after the Google buyout.
About this movement:
Motorola Mobility Inc. has become famous for its lies, slanderous ways, and tendency to flat out prove time and time again that it cares not for its customers after they walk out of that store with their Motorola-branded device. Since the early days of Android, post Droid 1, we have sat down and took our locked bootloaders like a man. There came to be a boiling point - and a full-out war was launched on their social media sites. Sound familiar? The same thing that worked with HTC and now with Asus. We received a generic "second half of 2011" timing. Guess what! It's now Q1 2012, and not only have they missed their deadline, but they have IGNORED all bootloader-related questions, given NO official announcement of their plans still being in motion, and thus must have forgotten that we are a core, dedicated community that wishes nothing more than to enjoy the phones we were given. Let's make ourselves heard yet again, turn the heat up, and make Moto (like HTC) get off of their asses and DO SOMETHING. Everyone counts!
Moto's Facebook - Moto's Twitter - Petition - FCC Complaints (Against Verizon)
So....What can I do?
FIRST OFF, SIGN THE PETITION:
This is included in the email, so it is crucial that it continues to grow in number.
Then....
TRY CALLING VERIZON'S EXECUTIVES.
Make sure before calling that you are very informed about the issue and confident in your position, yet can be quite calm. Do not show any disrespect towards Marie H or the person you call. They are merely the (wo)man-in-the-middle, and you simply need to explain to them your position and back it up with facts. Also, do note that all times are EST.
Call Marie H. at (412) 266-7756 on Monday - Fridays, 8 am to 5 pm. OR Michelle at (803) 231-1787 on Monday - Fridays, 7 am to 4 pm. OR Call Verizon customer service at *611 or (800) 922-0204 and get to a rep by mashing 0.
This is something you cannot copy-paste, unfortunately. Here are some guidelines that should help you be successful in your endeavor:
- First off, if you get the voicemail, leave your name, number, and a time you can be contacted in case they wish to follow-up call.
- Mention that many are filing FCC complaints because this violates Block C guidelines. (Do research in case this is brought into question)
- Mention that HTC, Motorola, and Samsung have bootloader-unlockable devices on the network right now; (HTC has their 2011 devices, Moto has the Xoom, and Samsung the Galaxy Nexus)
- Mention that the bootloader being locked does not allow the device to do anything that a laptop that is using a 4G hotspot cannot do even faster/more efficiently, including hogging network resources.
- Mention that the bootloaders being FORCE locked (as in, not unlockable) does not offer protection from any present viruses or attacks of Android devices.
- Mention also that unlocking the bootloaders could very well use a system like HTC uses - which stores the IMEI of the device and voids its software warranty indefinitely, making Verizon's warranty services not liable for what a user installs on their device.
- Close your talk/voicemail by stating the number of signatures on the petition, currently well over 2,500, and saying that this is a widespread concern of many users, that wish Android to be truly open.
- Say thank you before you hang up, it'll really give off a good impression.
TRY AN FCC COMPLAINT:
http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm
Select Wireless Telephone > Billing, Service, Privacy, Number Portability and other issues > Online Form. Fill out your information, scroll down, fill out 1 and 2, skip 3 and 4. Then in 5:
- Tell the FCC that your phone’s bootloader was sold to you locked, preventing the regulatory requirement of BLOCK C Devices (MAKE SURE TO MENTION BLOCK C!!!) that "Consumers should be able to download and utilize any software applications, content, or services they desire" - make sure to cite that.
- Also helpful would be dispelling the "Reasonable network management" exclusion. Tell the FCC that Verizon allows tethering of unauthorized devices to 4G LTE services through their mobile hotspots and their paid phone tethering functionality as-is, ones that are more bandwidth-hungry and also permit installing custom operating systems, and have a potential of doing significantly more damage, such as laptops.
If you don't want to write yours up manually, we will have a pre-made step 5 that you can just copy paste soon, hopefully.
TRY EMAILING:
TO: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]rola.com, [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]
To Whom It May Concern,
The independent communities that you catered to with your announcement earlier last year are very very excited for your bootloader unlock solution. However, the "second half" of 2011 has come and gone quietly; why is it that the public has received no notice that the bootloader unlock solution is still in works? A small-scale petition has made its rounds about the Android community, and has already gained over 2,500 signatures just under 55 hours after being made public: http://www.change.org/petitions/motorola-mobility-inc-unlock-all-smartphone-bootloaders-2
Clearly, the demand is indeed still quite strong (as can be seen on your social media networks, Facebook and Twitter), and it would be quite reassuring to the communities that not only pay for your devices every upgrade opportunity, but also help develop the Android operating system that you are using on the aforementioned devices, to have an announcement that the bootloader unlock/relock solution is still on track for a timely release. This would also potentially double as reassurance to on-the-fence Galaxy Nexus/HTC smartphone buyers to go with the Motorola Droid RAZR, with its KEVLAR backing, Verizon 4G LTE speed, powerful 1.2 GHz dual core processor, and new bootloader unlock/relock solution instead. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
A Motorola Mobility Enthusiast.
TRY TWEETING:
@Motorola - How about those unlocked bootloaders you promised second half of 2011? @HTC cares, do you? http://moto.ly/icsboot
TRY POSTING ON THEIR FACEBOOK WALL:
@Motorola - I'm a faithful Motorola customer, and I'm starting to have second thoughts. Honor what Android stands for, openness, and give us the bootloader unlock tool that you promised "second-half of 2011". http://moto.ly/icsboot #OPMOSH
MAKE SURE TO SIGN THE PETITION!!
It is the backbone of this movement. We need as many signatures as possible.
We NEED to be heard to get anywhere. Spread the word to your Facebook friends, your Twitter friends, your Google Talk friends, your favorite Android news site... Spread the word! Bring freedom to the Android ecosystem, like Andy Rubin and Rich Miner intended.
Thank you SO much for your support. This community is amazing and I know our endeavors will be successful. See you on Moto's Facebook!
In an effort to get better coverage, I would suggest crossposting to as many Android forums outside XDA as possible. Most definitely, send it to Android Police. It could be worth a shot. While I understand different folks have preferences as to what forums they frequent, getting the word out is paramount.
Just my $0.02 US
Make sure you start a similar one with verizon because i am pretty sure motorola is going to play the blame game as soon as this gains momentum based on the line from the blog post
"where operator and channel partners will allow it. "
I'd like to think this will work if we get it out there enough. It's the customers vs. the company, I can't think of anybody who would want it stay locked except for those people who are like "oh but then it'll just be easier for people to screw up."

I'd even post on the unlocked ones. Many people would help the cause. They could write how much they benefit from their phone with an unlocked bootloader. I even bet a significant number of the larger Android community would assist because we all have the same end game in mind.
This thread is great. I was just thinking yesterday of collecting the various resources to petition Motorola. You made everything very clear and we thank you. SPREAD THE WORD!! and, most importantly, ACT ON IT PEOPLE!!
Now we need a script to auto-tweet, auto-email, and auto-flame Motorola AND Verizon.
I'll help out with this cause any way that I can. I just posted on Moto's Facebook Page.

i just sent out an email to the addresses that were listed by the OP, lets see how long they can ignore the emails from the customers and ignore the petition. I hope they don't send back a generic email that states that they're "working" on it. If the dx2 is a "closet" device then maybe we can gain at least the key to unlock and we'd be gaining our pudding.
Being a recent HTC convert and former X2 owner, I can say that this could really work. We got our Rezound unlocked. This needs to get out there. You'd be surprised how powerful this can be if enough people here on XDA start making noise. Thanks, OP, for posting this. Good luck!
Can we organize a time to CALL motorola? I think clogging up their phone lines for a couple of hours may be more effective than jamming their inboxes with easily deleted emails. If we could get even 100 people to just call at the same time, we could be HIGHLY effective.
We could all also call the phone number listed in post number 96 of the similar thread in the RAZR forum. I think that if we politely annoy enough people things can get better.
'Bout to hit 1000..
Guys thus could work.we doubled our sigs in less then twelve hours at this rate we'd have 5000 by Saturday. Remember to send them emails and to remind other moto forums!! I have a feeling that they just might listen if we bagger them enough.

I signed the petition.
I posted in the Motorola X2 forums that HTC has already unlocked their bootloaders within the United States, and that the X2 will be my last Motorola phone if they do not go through with their statement they released to unlock the bootloaders.
I sent an email (not nasty, but to-the-point) in the same vein as my post in their forums.
Remember, people. Do NOT be nasty about it: no name calling, no cursing, etc. Just state that you feel they should unlock the bootloader, especially since HTC has done it. I went as far as to suggest they contact HTC to see how they got Verizon and AT&T to allow this. Then, state that you won't be purchasing any more Motorola phones if they do not move forward with this. I was being kinder and stated that we, as customers, deserve an answer from them one way or another (whether they will unlock the phones or not). If they choose not to unlock the phones nor give an answer, the X2 was going to be my last Motorola phone.
It wasn't nasty, it was to the point and it was with tact. That's what we need, not a lot of flaming, etc. That won't get you anywhere and they'll just ignore it and treat it as if it were from some child or teenager, which is what I would do with it as well.
BTW, just read this excellent article on Droid Life. Pretty damning against Motorola if you ask me!
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/01/0...eed&utm_campaign=Feed:+DroidLife+(droid+life)
I went ahead and updated my post in the Moto forums to include this article link as well.
BTW, this has to be the 3rd or 4th "article" I've seen today about this. I think it's picking up steam. Now, whether Moto decides to listen and take action is another thing.
Exactly we must be to the point but not to forward it could be offensive plus that could hurt the cause And we still need a little more signer so tell your friends mom etc
Signed petition.hope were heard.

Just received this from HTC.....
Dear xx-xx,
Thank you for your email regarding your HTC Flyer.
My name is David and I am a Technical Support Agent for the HTC Written Team.
I understand that you wish to enquire if the Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update will be made available for your tablet.
We really do appreciate your interest in our products Tristan. I do apologise but the HTC Flyer would not be receiving the ICS update. This is because this update is not compatible with this device. HTC has tested this update extensively on the HTC Flyer and can confirm that this device is not capable of running this update.
I do apologise for the inconvenience this may be causing you.
To let me know I have successfully answered your query, please follow the link below to close your enquiry, you will have the opportunity to leave feedback about your experience contacting me today.

I'm not worried, I'm sure the mod community will come up with a solution for us, but I'd hate to lose the scribe functionality, is anyone clued up enough to suggest if developers are going to be able to retain that?
Not compatible, lmao whatever. Why is it so hard for tech support people to just say "I apologize but I am just an employee and I am uninformed of these kind of decisions ".

What a load of crap don't take his word for it just wait and see for official word.
lol that's just a big fat lie xD
Since when does any Customer Service rep, for any company, have even the slightest clue what they're talking about?
Yeah do you have an email for that guy, so i can write him back and tell him he's full of it?
Not capable yet people on xda get ports working 75% of the way using another devices firmware
Doubt were going to see official
lol that's not official at all! silly customer service reps.
Well at least we can confirm that the HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE have been impounded by customs here in the US and are no longer for sale..... Thanks to Apple, so HTC ain't making a lot of people happy this month.
And this quote "This is because this update is not compatible with this device. HTC has tested this update extensively on the HTC Flyer and can confirm that this device is not capable of running this update. "
..............is straight out the Google / Vendor Android support agreement
Yeah the one where Google tried to force all the vendors to support with updates for 18 months. No vendor would sign up to that, so they inserted this escape clause in the agreement. 18 months IF THE DEVICE IS COMPATIBLE with the update.
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA LOL LOLLOOLLLLLL extensive testing my A$$.....
HTC's testing amounted to "does this make us money? ...NO, , OK it's not compatible then !!"
The least they could do is to release the source code of whatever build (if any) they have been testing Flyer with, to the community!!
Incompatible with ICS..that is complete bulls***..we had a very similar response from Samsung when we asked for GB update for Galaxy 3 (my current phone). Thanks to a very active developer community here on XDA, we have not only multiple GB ROMs (including CM 7.2) but also ICS now..hope something similar happens to Flyer..screw HTC!

Isn't the HTC one v basically the same hardware minus the front camera and half the ram? Their excuse doesn't fly. Either way this csr doesn't know anything anyway.

Even if the CSR knows nothing, what's been said before still applies. If HTC considered updating the Flyer to ICS, we would have seen leaked ROMs or at lease some leaked shots or videos of the device running it.
That being said, I highly doubt HTC plans any updates for us.

Actually, that's not quite true. While they may not be part of the decision-making process, someone in HTC management drafted a response for the reps communicating with customers. This is the information that has been approved to share outside the company by this person. Someone is Legal or PR may have more information, but techs and CSRs only have what management gives them.

I would guess this verbage came from HTC corporate because

Yeah the one where Google tried to force all the vendors to support with updates for 18 months. No vendor would sign up to that, so they inserted this escape clause in the agreement. 18 months unless THE MANUFACTURE DETERMINES THAT THE DEVICE IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the update.
It doesn't matter anyway, any update we get will just be slow, laggy, and buggy. It would be nice for developers but then again the hc update was so bad developers couldn't fix it either so yeah it doesn't matter.
Anyway I say the csr doesn't know what he's talking about because this is the third different thing they've said recently. They told me on Facebook that they are still evaluating, they told another member August, and they told the op its not compatible. Who's actually giving the right answer?

A honeycomb minor upgrade for the current bugs would be much better and more probable if many users mention the GPS issue since it's important. This update might bring other minor bugs if demanded a fix for the Current honeycomb.

I think it would be the better option. An ics update would just be rushed and buggy. Fixing honeycomb would do more good. It's more than just Gps, honeycomb runs slower, and uses more battery. I don't care about hardware buttons though, honeycomb isn't designed to use them anyway and I prefer the virtual buttons as they are better placed.

If you didnt already know, the Atrix's ICS update has changed its status from Q3 to "Further plans coming soon". Take that however you please. But one thing is almost certain; if Atrix doesn't get the update, neither will we. With that said, I feel its time to make ourselves heard to an individual within Moto that has some actual pull on what might happen regarding the ICS update; enter Punit Soni, Product Manager VP at Moto Mobility. If you would like to say something to him, go for it. But remember, the goal is to get the point across that the Photon and Atrix are two amazing and still widely used phones who have dedicated communities behind them who would like to see new life brought to the 2011 flagships that started the multicore revolution. So don't be a douche..

::UPDATE::
Sony has promised that the Droid Bionic will be getting their ICS update soon in response to Bionic owner discontent. Obviously this guy is serious about customer satisfaction. He could seriously be our way to get heard. Everyone should contribute! Soni, on the Droid Bionic situation

I posted the following comment on Mr. Soni's post about "Motorola aiming to upgrade all possible devices to Jelly Bean, promises to give you $100 credit if it can't"
Mr Soni,
First let me apologize about posting on your G+.
Software updates on many devices being changed to a vague status reads as "No" in the minds of many consumers and Motorola device owners. There are already a number of Motorola device owners that are in the process of replacing their devices. The damage may already be done. In the future simple "Yes we are working on it" or "No updates planned" would be of great benefit to both Motorola and device owners as many customers have already dealt with such vague statements from a number of manufacturers with generally unpleasant results.
Regarding Webtop and it's replacement, Webtop3.0. I release a modified version of the original Webtop that covers over 90% of things the average PC user does on their computer. It has met with some success and has been seen as what Webtop should have been. Webtop3.0 removes most of these key features and abilities and leaves many with no upgrade path beyond Gingerbread, myself included. There is also no alternative device to move to either. I would have gladly given the work to Motorola only asking for partial credit in return. I have attempted to contact Motorola a number of times and received the "Not my department" run around. In order to save space I will not go into the tech aspects and issues but link you to a blog post comparing Webtop, my custom Webtop and Webtop3.0. http://martian-imperium.blogspot.com/
I appreciate that you are reading a number of posts made by Motorola owners. This is far more than we have ever received from Motorola in the past and I hope others at Motorola follow your example.
Thank you
It seems like this is a great step in the right direction for Motorola. I cant wait to see the improvements they will make
The way I see it, is a 100 dollars is just not enough. If they had no intentions on upgrading the phone to begin with? why what put under development? Many of us (including myself) feel that Motorola does not care to have us as customer who buys their products. The least I feel they should do is to unlock the boot-loader ( so developers can do their magnificent work) also provide a logical explanation (come clean) sometimes works.
Just adding my two cents (very frustrated)
I appreciate he is keeping his G+ opened so we can provide him feedback, at least it seems like he is interested in fixing this situation.
Reading some of his answers, I think he is gonna take care of the Bionic first, then the Atrix. No words about the Photon though...
Enviado desde mi MB855 usando Tapatalk 2
In 2012 Motorola announced she would upgrade our devices, Atrix and Photon, to Ice Cream Sandwich in Q3. As you all know, they have changed their stance, leaving us with an outdated version of Android to play with. Our devices can easily run even the last version of Android, Jelly Bean, so why the update was canceled for us?
With the Update My Moto! campaign, we are asking for a leak of what was been done before they canceled the update or a compatible Tegra 2 kernel for Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. With these files, XDA developers can fix the problems themselves, while Motorola can make up for this mistake they made.

I actually like your campaign of "update" better than "suppport" since it gets to the point and doesnt make people think that you are wanting people to support motorola (as opposed to supporting the phone you purchased).

The idea was to create only one campaign, but we ended up spliting it because we had different views on this. But we agreed to help each other, since our goal is the same in the end.

I'm spreading the word. I got motonomore.com, It's just a plain guestbook and I'm sure its kind of silly but I was hoping for tons of complaint posts about Moto. I figured all spread out our voice don't look so big but all in one place might make a change. Either way I'm posting every site or articles can find on this. I know Motorola wants everyone to lie down so it will be forgotten but if that happens then they got a new group to rape in an alley.

I know Motorola wants everyone to lie down so it will be forgotten but if that happens then they got a new group to rape in an alley.

Hopefully they will be able to get something out to us. I'm so angry that they left us out in the cold like this. It reflects poorly on them as a company and they will be lucky to receive my business again.

Thanks. I'm not very optimistic, but I'll be thrilled if you succeed.
The other campaign is also talking to the FTC, which I expect to be more helpful than the BBB. I think the BBB's day has gone, and it is now just an organization that extracts payments from companies to maintain "good" ratings. The FTC may still think its mission is to protect consumers.
Good work
Good work and I hope you succeed!
Moto-- "We are committed to being more transparent than ever on our software upgrade strategy - even when we're delivering news consumers may not want to hear. We are doing everything possible to continually improve our communication with you and make sure you are a satisfied customer. That's why we recently announced our $100 rebate program for owners of these and other devices launched in 2011 and beyond that won't get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. This program starts in the U.S. this fall, and we are working to expand it to select regions around the world. Please watch for updates at motorola.com/tradeup.
BBB-- "If you are not satisfied with the company's response and wish to provide additional information relevant to your complaint (such as a copy of your contract, invoice, receipt, work order, warranty, etc.) please submit it with your rebuttal by the aforementioned date. If the Bureau does not receive a response from you within ten (10) days, your complaint will close as Assumed Resolved."

I clicked that I didn't accept their response and made my rebuttal. I'm sure everyone is getting this same message and I'm assuming BBB will be fine with Motorola's answer. I however will never click the I accept the response unless they either give me the money to buy a Samsung Galaxy S3 (without contract or my broken contract fees included) or the option to unlock my phone.

I think the BBB is mostly about getting companies to pay for advertising in exchange for a good rating. I'd try the FTC, which might be interested in what Moto promised. Or you could try at the state level. Most states have a consumer protection agency. There seems to be a directory of state and local agencies here:

That must be the form letter they are using for everyone. I didn't accept it either. Sent them a fairly long nastygram in response. Not expecting any satisfaction though.
It's amazing that they just keep right on with the BS:
Get the best of Android from us
We want to give you the best of smartphone technology. That means not only pushing the boundaries on design, utility, and speed, but also providing the best mobile software out there. Today, that's Jelly Bean, the newest Android operating system. That's why we're upgrading Motorola smartphones first offered for sale in 2011¹ and later to Jelly Bean.

and then of course the superscript section says:
1 Applies to United States sales of Android Motorola smartphones first offered in 2011 or later.

Well gee, I'm pretty sure - but don't quote me on this - that all the phones we are pissed about (Atrix 4G, Photon 4G, Electrify) were offered aka released in 2011, go figure. I mean, what, are they going to toss out Jelly Bean for all these devices soon, 'cause that's exactly how I read that content, word for word.
I mean, I could understand if THAT content said "except for certain devices" and then actually name said devices directly or something similar but it doesn't: it flat out says if the device was offered in 2011 or later (as the Atrix 4G, the Photon 4G, and the Electrify were), they're getting Jelly Bean updates and, unless I'm mistaken, that's not going to happen.
Doesn't say some, or specific ones that will or won't get any update to Jelly Bean, it specifically right there in black and white says if it's a Motorola Android phone offered in 2011 and later it's getting an update to Jelly Bean. I mean... WTFOMGBBQ
Now, correct me if I'm wrong here but when you say one thing and it turns out to be absolutely positively false, you're generally considered to be lying, right? Right?
Sure seems like something the FTC might be persuaded into looking into: that's flat out customer fraud, plain, simple, black and white, no muss, no fuss, no questions asked, right there on that page.
Motorola, are you even trying?
Hi Everyone
The broken promise of Motorola has been drivin' me nuts for a year now. I want to change the situation.
Everybody knows that Moto releases now the Moto X device, and you can hear everywhere how sexy it is.
I would like to make Motorola stop for a moment, and give our crazy good devs (like th3bill) all what they need to make a perfect JB ROM. Or at least ICS. And when I say JB I don't mean Justin Bieber.
How can we do that? We can start a campaign. We'll call it "Don't buy Moto campaign".
This campaign will convince people to avoid Moto product, by showing them that Motorola is a promise-breaker. We will advertise it all over Facebook, and all over the internet, until Motorola will say "Okay. We give up. What do you need?"
What do you think? Isn't that a good way? Isn't it our last chance to win while the time passes too fast?
I need your will to join. Together we will make the change. We can begin with posting on Moto's Facebook page.
Please tell me what you think!
Thank you,
Yair
It already been tried. Even with coverage from multiple sites like C|Net, Moto simply refused to play ball.

Sad to hear that. But was it an extensive campaign? Was there someone who tried to threaten Motorola's sales and revenue?
I'm not sure. We can do it much more powerful this time! Make every upset customer join us!
Look. If all the people here decide to act, together we will make Moto's Facebook page full of out contents, explaining why not to but Motorola. It will be more than things that were done before. We shouldn't give up!
I am the first one. https://www.facebook.com/motorola/posts/10151795168395731
Go make the change happen!
Both SupportMyMoto and it's partner UpdateMyMoto were pretty massive. In fact SupportMyMoto pushed the official Motorola website of the first page of Google search results for "Motorola" and was pulling in thousands of hits a day. There were a number of developers and Android advocates on board as well as a number of device owners from around the world. There was also a massive Twitter, Facebook and G+ effort as well. It hit almost every one of Motorola's social media outlets as well as the official Motorola forums. The estimated loss in return customers was projected to be in the millions of dollars but even with that Motorola failed to even provide sourcecode much less an update.
Got it. Thank you for the answers!

And yet people are still rushing out to buy the new phone. I don't understand it and never will. I'm one of the few that still posts occasionally on Soni's google+ page. Even some folks who got screwed on the photon are supporting the new release.... Don't get it at all. Plenty of other choices out there. I got updates for six months. Some of you got even less. The most any of us got was 9 months...
Never looking back and enjoying my S4.
