[Q] Cellular data not turning off while Wi-Fi on. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hello all,
As you can see, I'm new here (okay, I lurked for like a year lol.)
Basically, my stock 2.3.6, unrooted AT&T Note is not forcing mobile data to turn off when I switch to Wi-Fi. Both the W-Fi and "4G" icons appear, and the "4G" icon shows that it is transferring data all the time, even though I have full Wi-Fi bars. I did a factory reset and that did nothing. Do I just need to disable data every time?
Thanks!

The op said he did a master reset in the thread and it still has the same problem. How is killing the last app gonna stop that? Really now come on guy. That makes no sense. Think a little harder

Hey, why not suggest an answer, not attack answers and other members give while trying to help.

Switch to airplane mode then turn on wifi. Airplane mode will turn off all modems.

Im as stumped as the op. But giving an answer like that is just completly dumb. If he reset the device and still didnt fix the issue it would have to be software related or wifi related. Not a app. Duh

Apps Using Data
I have noticed that the AT&T Messages App is always running (Settings>Apps>Running). It seems to me that this app must always be using data since that's the only way it can notify me that I have an SMS message - there may be other apps always running that keep data alive so that they can check for SMS, MMS or voicemail.
IDK but it makes sense to me that data must always be running on a phone since we can't get messages via WiFi.

If he puts airplane mode on thats just postponing the issue plus then he cant gets calls or texts. Not a smart idea either.

Actually he wants WiFi to "force data off" - that's different than turning it off via airplane mode. I do not think you can actually force data off with WiFi - it must be turned off either manually or via airplane mode.

I want to be able to receive calls. I just don't want to be eating my 2GB's away while I'm supposedly on Wi-Fi.

This makes sense. When I originally got my Note, I wasn't using the AT&T Messaging, I was using stock Android messaging. Then I updated the AT&T app because not having all the apps up-to-date in Play bothers me. All the sudden it became the default messaging app. I uninstalled the update before the factory reset, and it automatically updated post-reset. I tried uninstalling it but it still does it.
Also, I was using Data Watchdog, uninstalled that and it still does it.
So I guess the question remains, how do I disable AT&T Messaging without rooting?

The last app has secured it connection via data and will continue using that data and keeping the connection open until you shut it off.

Hold home key swipe apps to close them then it should switch signal automatically
If it doesnr work wipe cache and dalvik cache and try again. If you don't know what this is private message me

I'm on the 2 gig plan too. I didn't give it a thought until now.
Can you use the task manager to see what app is holding onto the data connection after you switch to wifi? Sorry I can't give any help.

Woot! I got it. There is an app in the market called APN-Switch. Its a widget that kills data but still lets you get calls and SMS. I tested it and it works great. I think it forces your phone into GSM mode.

[Q] No 3G after Update to pre-R GB and Eclipse ROM

Hey Everyone,
I was running root Froyo and just updated to pre-rooted GB and the Eclipse v2.1 ROM last night. Everything is running great except I have no 3G icon and can't make calls. Here is the process I did and the things I have tried:
1. Wipe Data/Cache/Dalvik
2. Upgrade with P3 AIO pre-root GB
3. Wipe Data/Cache/Dalvik
4. Flash Eclipse 0.1 ROM
5. Wipe Data/Cache/Dalvik
6. Flash Eclipse 2.1 ROM
Tried *228 twice to reactivate and still nothing along with multiple reboots.
Anything else I can try? Are there some files I can check for?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Kind of new to droid (from blackberry) and starting to get my hands dirty (and enjoying every minute )
Thanks in advance!
After you flash the AIO, try booting up normally, activating the phone. You should get 3g and voice at that point. Then go ahead and instal the rom.
Also I'm not sure about you flashing the old version of the rom then the new one. Shouldn't it just be the new version only? Like I said I'm not positive, check rom instal instructions. But usually you don't flash multiple versions like that.

I've never seen this problem before, but if you can get 3G after an SBF than it's definitely not Verizon and not your phone, but rather something you are installing/flashing. If you can't get 3G after an SBF there is something wrong with your phone or your Verizon account and in that case I would suggest dialing 611.
Let us know if you can get 3G after an SBF.
Thanks for the responses guys.
@juhde: only reason I flashed the 0.1 before 0.2.1 is because I read some people having problems going straight to 0.2.1 vs most everyone I saw with 0.1 first having no problems. Who knows.
After loading up the AIO I did run the setup and I can't recall if I had 3G though because I was on WIFI, which is why I didn't notice until this morning after leaving home.
@Overmind: Thanks for the tip I might have to try that because nothing else is working. I was hoping to avoid SBFing but if I have to no big deal.

Why don't you do a nandroid first? Or.. my favorite, titanium backup, then you can backup all your apps+data, sbf, or whatever, reflash, and use titanium to get all your apps back + your levels on Angry Birds and such (app data). The pro version is like $6.00 in the market but so WORTH every penny. I love it!!
I've been using "My Backup Root" the free version and it works pretty well from what I can tell. Found it on the XDA dev forums. I heard Titanium is faster though. May have to try it out sometime.
I do have my stock w/ root nandroid. May have to try that. Just finished downloading RSD Lite and SBF but restoring nandroid should be a little easier. Prob going to try that first.
Thanks.
Ok this is odd...
So I try a wipe data/cache/davlik then restore my orig nandroid backup. Everything looks fine but no 3G still. I *228 option 1 and still nothing.
So at this point I say screw it and do an SBF. I followed the guide in the X2 forums to a "T" and when everything clears it looks like I am back to the same configuration as before. No 3G and all the same apps as my nandroid backup. I thought SBFing was supposed to be a factory reset, which would mean everything gets wiped correct?
To make sure... I just finished SBFing a second time, making sure I was in administrator (Win7), and still nothing. Tried *228 again after and nothing.
Anything I can be doing wrong here?
One small caveat... RSD Lite is saying "please manually power up this phone" after SBF is finished. I googled it and it doesn't look like anything of consequence if the phone boots properly, which it is.
Thanks for all the help
I'm at odds to what is going wrong here.
Two quick things to try, well 3 actually:
Dial *#*#4636#*#* then select phone settings & scroll down to the toggle radio button & see if it's set to on.
Check the wireless settings menu & make sure your data is on.
Dial *22899 to reactivate your data.
Last resort: call vzw & have tier2 reset your data on their end.

Earlier today my X2 was connected fine and my LG dumb phone sitting right next to me couldn't make or receive calls. Couple hours later, now it's reversed, the LG is working fine, my X2 has no data/voice.
Call Verizon and ask them if the outage is affecting your area.

Public service announcement

Do not do a data restore from the dialer using ##3282#, it is highly likely you will lose your ability to make calls and receive 3G. I did this as well as others I have seen in the forum and the techs do not know the information to manually fill in to the fields when all the data gets messed up, so your only option will be a replacement phone. You have been warned.
This may have worked on previous HTC phones but is seriously broken on this one.
If you're in that situation can you try running the RUU so you're 100% day one stock and then do the same code to restore? That should get you back on your feet again.

I think for other HTC devices that works (and should for this), but something about putting that code ruins the UIC/MIC (whatever its called) and makes impossible to get back..
You just need your sprint email thing to fix the data restore hell.

I tried RUU and re-entering your username, it didn't work. It will erase your MSD and MSID too, I've seen that happen. You can fix the call and text issue on your own. Are you saying you have done a data restore and it didn't screw your 3g?

Oh no, it screwed it completely. I still had voice but no data.
That screen I showed you, was blank (the inputs were either 0 or __, after doing the data restore.
I don't remember all of the steps exactly but I do remember the last thing I did to get it working was inputting the email there.
I did a profile update afterward, just to make sure everything was kosher.
Can't you do a profile update over wifi to get your NAI and MSID back?

Did the same thing and messed my phone up. After all possible resets and sprint tech "help" I ended up getting a free replacement.
I have told sprint before how to fix this and obviously no one has added the notes to the system. When you do a data reset it changes the active profile to 0 which is where most people's old phones had the profile sit. After you do the reset skip the activation because you won't get a connection. Go back into the data editor and change the active profile to 1 and then go into setting and select activation. Everything should be working fine at this point and start the reactivation just fine. This really should be a sticky.

This worked for me, although it took me a couple of tries. The finale time I let the device reboot itself instead of clicking the "reboot now" option (this is after changing to active profile 1), which seems to help in these situations. that's just been my perception and nothing scientific but I think it's worth waiting the ten seconds or so.

[Q] Significant WiFi drain- download arrow always on

I've been noticing lately that when I am connected to my university WiFi network, that my battery drains a lot faster than if I was just on the mobile network.
After about a week this is what i figured out:
1) its not any apps that are causing the drain(at least i don't think so)
2) every time WiFi is on, the download arrow on the WiFi icon is always!! on
3) the download arrow does not stay constantly on when i am on the mobile network
4) checked WiFi scan intervals and they are at 180 seconds in build.prop
5) this happens every access point on campus
Could it be the specific routers around campus? Their network infrastructure? Or apps constantly communicating to the network once WiFi is on?
Because when i was back at home, my home WiFi wasn't behaving this way with the downloading arrow always on and didn't drain battery as fast
I am on Shostock 4.1.4 but it was happening on an older Shostock rom as-well (although i don't think the rom is the issue)
Anything I could do? I would really like to get back to using WiFi all the time but the drain is upsetting.
My Koodo s2 does the same thing! But only on campus and not on other acces point.

You probably have an app setup to use wifi to upload stuff. dropbox, g+, IDk how many others there are, hell google music......
Wipe your phone if you dont know what it is. then pay attention to what you install.
There is nothing on a wifi network that can make your phone do anything that you didnt give it permission to.
Tho a crappy signal will cause it to use more battery.
I just downloaded an app that monitors network usage.
Receive Data WiFi off: stays at 0 Kbps most of the time, will increase a few times to like 1-10 for a second and then go back to 0 for a while
Receive Data WiFi: never hits 0 its always from like 30-150 Kbps one time 250Kbps. WTF?
is there any kind of app that actually lets you see what app is pulling all this rogue data when WiFi is on?
As i said back in my college the same thing happens both to laptops and to other deviced, so i asked one of my networking teachers and he told me its because the way the acces point works (they are all open networks, you connect to those and then when connected you open your browser, enter your student id and pass and finally your free to roam the interwebs)
It might not be your case though but check with another device and another network to see if it behaves the same.

The network here is a little different. It is actually a secured network, and you must sign in with student id and pass just to be able to connect to the network. Once connected, you are free to do as you please.
My s3 started doing this a couple of days ago. Can't figure out why either.
I installed an an app that let me look at the connections. There was several open to Google, one open to Samsung, and another to Facebook. I don't think any data was coming from any of those connections.
I know it's not an app. I force closed everything. I don't think it's the router. I've had the same router and this wasn't happening before last weekend.
Someone said to turn off wifi when the phone sleeps. Won't that drive mobile data up?

Sounds to me like its an app downloading something. Maybe better battery stats could give you some info.

Don't know if this will help but, Avast mobile security has an network meter that shows all wifi data connections it might help you find what is using the wifi then it has a firewall (if you're rooted) to block any apps that you don't want using the wifi. If you turn off wifi when the phone sleeps just turn off mobile data as well... GL My data manager app will tell you whats using your wifi as well
Nop, ipv6 didn't do it. Still getting trickle of data coming in. It adds up to about 500kb per hour.

Nop, that's not it. Also, it's the wrong direction. I'm seeing a download trickle. No upload unless I do something.

Same here, Android OS in the data usage system app shows 50mb background data 6kb foreground for WiFi. On the mobile data section only 314 kb background and no foreground data.
I have just downloaded an app that monitors Wifi/mobile data, and it shows exactly what is using the data (specifics in Android OS as well)
It is here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.trafficstats&hl=en
Download that anicotra and keep WiFi on and lets try to figure this out.
Will post pictures when enough data is collected. :highfive: Hopefully shoman will be able to shed some knowledge :fingers-crossed:
EDIT: App is not displaying what is causing the main source of downloading data when Wifi is on( it is still something in Android OS). It is something else because the data listed does not make up for the total amount that was being used.

So, I downloaded that program. Not sure it's going to help. As you see, there's 281kb on wifi, but only a few kbytes are being routed to processes.

[Q] Phone losing network

I am having a peculiar problem since last 20-25 days. In home network, after some time of inactivity, my phone network stops working. I can see full network range on screen and H+ access but neither can I make calls nor use Data. I have to restart the phone to get it going again. When I go to roaming, this problem disappears.
I restored the phone to factory settings to negate a possibility of my OS going corrupt. But now the problem has started again.
I use Vodafone 3G network in India.

No.. I meant contacting Vodafone.
Have u installed any app that may interfere with ur internet connectivity (like battery saving apps)?
If you were rooted, I would suggest you try changing your modem.

Contacted Vodafone?

Yes. Called up Vodafone yesterday. First guy sent me the 3g settings since he didn't understand what my problem was. Then i had to talk to his supervisor. He asked me to visit nearest gallery. When I asked him to log a service request he suggested that I keep settings for network search on manual. When I protested he finally locked call. But don't know what he had typed in the call lock. Anyway. Will changing the sim card help

I really doubt changing the sim will help. If you can, go to the store in person & keep insisting that it's nothing to do with your APN. If you can, show him the problem, not just tell him what happens. Ie, take the phone when it won't connect at all. Then restart the phone & show him it works.

Fyi.i used this sim on samsung wave and I didnt face problem so I suspect its my galaxy s2 that's giving problems
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I suspect too. Just to check, on your wave what are your APN settings? Compare them to try our APN settings on your s2. If they're different, try changing the ones on your s2 to match the ones on the wave.

I tried something tonight. In network mode, i selected GSM only and the network didnt go off. even edge service is running properly
The problem happens when the phone is in GSM/WCDMA(Auto mode)
I confirmed this again twice, thrice. If I keep the phone in GSM only mode, no network issues. All steady. If I move to GSM/WCDMA (Auto) mode, after a period of inactivity(cannot quantify) the phone shows full bars and 3G symbol, but no data can be interchanged or calls received/made. I have to restart the phone to access network again in that mode.
This happens only at my home(so i assume only on one tower)
Go talk to the network provider

Already done that. They have not taken action. I Don't expect this problem to be solved by the technologically challenged customer care team of Vodafone in India.
upon further investigation I found on the Internet that this problem happens when network provider is upgrading from a lower to higher technology which uses different spectrum. The solution is to access *#*#4636#*#* and change default mode to gsm auto (prl) mode which will ensure that it will prefer gsm over wcdma but jump to wcdma when a minimum signal threshold is achieved. Sadly I am unable to access that menu since Samsung must have disabled it.
Any solution to that?

Can someone please give me a solution to activate the *#*#4636#*#* menu on Samsung Galaxy SII running stock ROM in India. I think my problem will be solved if that is done.
Does anyone know what these are. I changed aquisition mode from UMTS-GSM to GSM-UMTS. Check screen shots. I got this from*#0011# and then pressing back and then phone control and network info

I finally flashed cynogenmod 10.1 and the issue was resolved. Now the issue was that all my backup via kies(contacts messages emails etc cannot be restored) also couldn't get Google apps. So had to reflash to stock.
Anyone know where to get the Google package? And how to restore the backup created kies to cm10.1?

Question Any wireless connection disables mobile data - TMobIile

I have a very odd issue, if I connect to wifi, I can search the internet just fine but I cannot make phone calls or get text messages. Sometimes the texts will go through and other times it gives an error. I went through all of the network settings but cannot find the culprit, does any one know what I am missing???
Thanks

I'm having issues with calls being dropped and messages not being sent when on Wi-Fi. Changing wifi calling preference does nothing. Turning wifi calling off does nothing. I turn wifi off and calls and messages are fine. Doesn't happen all of the time though. So not sure what's going on.

Did you disable Mobile Data Always Active under Developer Options?
Though I'm not sure that would be the culprit as I have it disabled, but don't suffer the problems you're experiencing. So I guess this wasn't really helpful. I apologize.
Or maybe you should? And perhaps that will fix it? If it doesn't then I apologize again.

That is pretty odd.
Been having connection issues since day 1. Changing different settings has worked for periods of time but nothing seems permanent. I have to cycle airplane mode to fix it every time to fix.
Was reading up on other sites and this is wide spread enough to find posts about it all over. Haven't seen anything to pinpoint why it happens or who is effected. Best I've found is that it may have something to do with when the phone switches to 5gUC and then off. But mine switches on and off of that relatively often and it doesn't do it every time. Though it does seem to do it if I'm on Wi-Fi and it's flipping to a good 5G signal to a not good one. So maybe it's when both radios are active.
Oh and I'm on TMobile, Swapped from Sprint sim.
Oh one more theory... I keep seeing messages from Sprint / T-Mobile about switching to the T-Mobile network. But I am currently using a T-Mobile SIN. These aren't generic messages. Messages they're geared directly to specific lines on my account, including . Now I don't know if somehow I could be on a T-Mobile SIM and still on the Sprint network, because that goes against a lot of stuff. Stuff I know regarding how the networks are being operated but I am a little out of the loop so I guess it could just be roaming back and forth or something And they had set something up at the tower so that you don't even see it do such. But anyway, if this weird theory were true, maybe that's the only people that it's affecting.
I'm sure that you set the default APN to Tmobile, right? My coworker was using a sprint sim and after getting another sim from Tmobile, her phone works fine. Of course, she doesn't have a pixel 6 so it could be something with the device. I love my P6 but there are some quirks. About to try this ArmorSuit skin screen protector later today as the hard ones do not register fingerprints.
Yep, unfortunately all apns are set correctly (or as far as I know). I have both the TMobile and TMobile mms apns that auto generated with the activation.
T-Mobile 5Guc Is actually crazy fast I get really good download speeds and actually mine upload too it's way different from 4G to me just look at my results

Sounds then like its using VOLTE and the inactive data is not properly selective.
Actually the issue came back so I just turn off wifi.
