Verizon and Warranty exchange after root - Motorola Droid RAZR

I was on GB with root, then went to ICS with root. Went back to GB with, anticipating a warranty exchange.
I called in and the guy spent a few minutes trying to trouble shoot. He placed me on hold for a few minutes and then came back on and told me whatever software he has says my phone is rooted and therefore, my warranty is voided.
Ok, fine, I get that. My questions is this...if I send the phone back in UNROOTED, will they deny my warranty claim? Is it noted in my account somewhere to deny the warranty for this jerk who just wanted more functionality from his phone?

My understanding is that Motorola has a program on the phone that basically narks you out when you root your device. You may have a hard time convencing them otherwise.

So who has found the program and disabled it? lol

No, there is not, the warranty will go through perfectly.

No such application exists, there would be too much fallout.

The same thing happened to me when I called Motorola about fixing my screen because it has a stuck pixel. They took my mobile number and put me on hold. only to come back a minute later to tell me they won't repair it for free because my phone is rooted. So my apologies but the software exists somewhere on this phone.

I've called Verizon and gotten two warranty exchanges both the phones were rooted, one at the time I called them. Both went through completely fine. So I'm guessing that it's only Motorola that can tell?

I believe so, i'm not sure Verizon can sniff it out but moto sure can. I was searching for the link for you guys but can't find it. It was a new article talking about how it's only recent but there's an app or program that can narc on us. I'm sorry if this sounds conspiracy like but moto just proved it to me last week.

I'm not good at following directions. Or playing well with others. Or sharing.
Thanks prbassplayer
Just a note: I decided not to go through with it. On TMo, I had phones rooted and flashed all the time - and still turned those into warranty. So long as there was no physical defect or water damage, they could care less.

There is a chance that they would notice, but if it's simply the trackball that's problematic, I doubt they'll go into your system info that much.
Option A.) Downgrade and don't risk it (your getting a new phone most likely anyway if it is truly broken.
Option B.) Take the new weather/clock widget and other stuff that is obviously from 2.1 off your home screen(s), and try to use the ones that look like they are from 1.5. That would be enough to trick a random person who doesn't have any experience with an eris I would think...
I would recommend calling customer support. They don't ask that many questions. Just, if its rooted, restore to 1.5 using jcase's method.
thanks alot so its possable to downgrade without needing my trackball to go down?? lmao
hmm... does anyone know if this is a problem with 2.1 in general? I'm still on 2.1leak (dont want to upgrade to anything else in fear that leak will be able to root before whatever i upgrade to) and my ball wont go down.
I was going to go into verizon tomorrow to get it replaced so i could go root instead... but if anyone thinks that's a bad idea let me know.
ur track ball won't go down either?

yep, I just went to the verizon store, a new unit is being sent to me in a couple days.
but, back on topic. I'm fairly certain 2.1 voided the warranty over the air. When i went to go in to get a replacement unit, they couldn't figure out why my phone was out of warranty when i just got it back in november/december.
Is there anyway that updating to 2.1 verizon pinged the phone or the phone pinged verizon and they marked it out of warranty?
the representatives there just did some work around in the computer to give me my warranty, thankfully they weren't too smart to look at the firmware number (it was locked even if they tried).
(one representative just had a can of compressed air blowing directly on the trackball for like 2 minutes... i couldn't believe he even tried that :/ )
think ill be ok if I don't go back to stock 1.5? reply ASAP in leaving in an hour

Lucky.... now you have one you can brick
verizon doesn't make you send back your old phone? sweet! i'm getting a new one sent to me as well. I'll love having this extra one around to practice changing the trackball and development and stuff.
also, does the replacement unit still come with the 8gb sd card? that's a freaking deal right there.
I have received many (many!) replacements from big red and they have always required that I send the "bad" device back. You are given 10 days from the time you receive the replacement, then the old one goes back or you pay The only way you may be able to keep the old one is via insurance claim, not sure on this.
When you get a referb form VZW it will be bare bones device without battery, back cover, SD. Nothing but the phone (again insurance claim may be different).
otoh. I opened it when I got home... hope I don't have to send back
Sent from my Eris using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Yes, you have 10 days to return your old device on a warranty claim, or you are charged the retail price of the phone.
question i have though... what happens when they get my old phone and see firstly a nexus one boot screen, and secondly, it's 2.1?
they probably won't care its too late

[Q] Help unrooting?

Okay, I did some searching and I didn't really find what I needed in my circumstance. I've read the threads about unrooting my thunderbolt buy my situation is a bit more specific than the generic unrooting procedures that I've seen.
So, through some weird circumstances my thunerbolt's screen doesnt turn on anymore. It ended up being dropped about a foot and the screen just died on me. there is no physical damage to the phone (i.e. the screen isn't cracked or bleeding). I already talked to Verizon reps about it, and I might be able to turn it in for warranty replacement. (If not, I'll just have to use my upgrae ). but to turn it for warranty I will obviously have to remove root. I haven't flashed anything to my phone for about 3 or 4 months so I know I didn't kill the screen by messing something up.
Here's the catch:
-my screen is dead so i cant really see what im doing on the phone.
-for some reason my computer cant recognize my phone. it keeps telling me that "the USB evice has malfunctioned".
-my SD card still reads in my card reader on my PC.
So basically I don't really have any idea how i could possibly go about unrooting my phone. Any ideas or suggestion are welcome. Maybe a donation to the contributors that help me? If not I will sadly have to leave the realm of the thunderbolt and I will use my upgrade If needed. (I would much rather keep my Thunderbolt than have to upgrade to like the nexus or something...I dont like them....)
Thanks in advanced

Can't they like hook it up to their computer or something like that and find that the phone is rooted?
Maybe, but didn't you say your PC doesn't recognize phone anymore? From what I've read, don't quote me on this, Big Red does not really do an in depth check before sending out for repair. Check for root, sure they do but again no screen/power, who knows then. Repair people could prolly care less. Again, nothing in stone here, just stuff I picked reading here n there.

Yeah. I went into the store and they shipped me a new warranty replacement phone. Although they did this, I'm still a bit apprehensive about sending it back while it's still rooted. So my original request still stands: I would like to know of a possible way to unroot it.
Thanks

Read the thread for Triangle Away, it explains this.
Flash the stock rom for your region.
It will revert back to normal
Sorry to hijack your thread, but i noticed mine says the same, and i havent flashed it. However i have root access, so i guess that is enough to make it "modified".
Would this go back to normal, if i unroot it?
Funnily enough, I noticed this just today on mine - mine is an original unlocked phone, all I've done is root it.

Rooting it involves an "unauthorised" flash. You need to Triangle Away, pull the battery then revert to stock... As detailed in the Triangle Away post.
Just follow these two video in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613
And you will be able to have your phones status say "Normal" instead of "Modified"

oh, I thought you asked if they can read that if you send the phone to them
nah, I don't think they'll do that
sorry should have been more specific. I was meaning if they can digitally read it from their diagnostic software or whatever they have. I've never worked in a cell phone call center. Maybe I should go get a job at one just to scope out what they can and cannot find out by just a push of a button.

Used triangleaway app and it hard bricked my phone

I'm not new to these forums, but this is the first time I'm posting anything. I wanted to get rid of the yellow triangle on my phone in case i needed to send it in for any warranty issues. I found the triangle away app and it was compatible with the i777. I was on shostock ics either 3.1.1 or 4.1.1, i don't remember but it worked, i restarted the phone and everything worked just fine. I set it down and went back on it 10 minutes later, and it was frozen. I could get it into download mode but odin wouldn't load anything to the phone. After a few tries, the phone screen went black and wouldn't turn on. also when I plugged it in it started getting hot. I sent it out to someone on ebay that offered jtag service to repair a hard brick galaxy s2. He is sending it back to me unfixed, saying it was unresponsive. I don't know if anyone else has posted this problem, but I seem to be the only idiot who has completely bricked there phone using this. Is there anyone else that has had this problem and have you gotten it fixed? thanks for your replies in advance.

Based on your post, it doesn't sound like anything you did. It definitely wasn't the app that bricked your phone. If the phone was running fine and then just quit, I would warranty it. Just leave out the rooting/custom rom part when telling them what happened. If the phone is completely FUBAR they'll never know it was rooted. And again, I only suggest this because it sounds like this happened through no fault of your own.

I thought we had, but sadly....
Anyway, as much as you may hate AT&T, XDA does not condone fraud; please keep such suggestions to yourselves in the future...
I don't think it was anything that the op has done. When I first upgraded to the GS2 I was trying to go the refurb route. The first refurb I received was totally unresponsive and it got hot when trying to charge. I called the Death Star and had them send another. It too did the same thing. I returned it and went to Sam's Club and bought a new one. Sounds to me like a hardware failure and you need to call and see about a replacement.
I'm going to agree with everyone else that it sounds more like a hardware vs software issue.
If he sends it in for warranty and they can fix it and see custom Roms and.rooting they may send him a bill.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
Someone of you are missing the point I think....Regardless of hardware or software. The phones warranty was voided from a custom rom. As moto said if they some how fix it and find shoshock on there. They won't be happy....

Deleted. Rant was over the top
That aside, odds of them finding it was rooted if this is a hard brick are slim to none. First thing they're going to do if it doesn't turn on is try to restore it to a factory state.
And stop with the moral police. This guy didn't brick his phone modding it. It was already rooted/rom'd. This happened while the phone was just sitting around. There's a difference, warranty be damned. It's like a car manufacturer trying to void your warranty for changing your muffler...
CallMeAria said:
Some people are trying to play moral police here like the dude is trying to commit fraud. And maybe he is. But based on his post he did nothing wrong to cause this to happen to his phone, so anyone crying fraud is making that claim based on their own assumption. The title of the thread is misleading. We have plenty of people who return their phones to stock for exchanges/returns because of failures not related to custom roms/rooting. Nothing wrong with that. This sounds like a hardware failure which would have nothing to do with what he says he did. In addition if this is a hard brick then there is no way they will ever know he flashed anything. Even if they can get the phone operating it won't be in the state its in now. It will be wiped in am attempt to restore functionality.
I'm sorry but I'm intelligent enough to know that rooting my phone had absolutely no negative impact on its hardware. And if something stops working you're Damn right ill return it to stock to have it replaced. There's nothing wrong with that.
This isn't some cases of "I tried to flash the wrong firmware and then unplugged my phone while loading bootloaders and now it's borked how can I cheat the system?"

I don't see that as committing fraud anymore than someone reverting back to stock over a broken usb port. Had nothing to do with the rom but technically the warranty was voided. It's a pretty Grey area. Like I said in edited post, it's like voiding a car warranty over changing a muffler. It's BS.

way different. OP states that the application bricked his device. When you brick your phone, after doing something to it. Thats your fault. Not at&t's. Nothing like changing a muffler, more like flashing computer or installing a chip.
My USB was bad, and has been for months. Thats a factory defect, or a warranty matter. there are no grey areas in this case.

Re-read that first post. The title is a bit misleading. Op says he used the app and phone was working fine. Came back to it later and it wasn't working anymore. That's not the app. That's not bricking from flashing, sorry. That's something else. Too many people jumping to conclusions here without actually reading with comprehension.

If you are rooted dont try to use Chainfire 3D

This was originally a post about how i stumbled on a problem Chainfire 3D causes which ends up soft bricking your phone. I got a replacement phone from verizon through my warranty and it came with MDK build on it. Apparently its not a good thing to figure out loopholes in the system and share them so ive changed this post to warn people about installing the drivers from the Chainfire 3D app.
Doing a factory reset doesnt wipe root. The root binaries are in system and a FDR only hits data partitions. People doing this is also why insurance deductibles are going up and caps put on how many claims you can file.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Here goes more people frauding the system, people like you that make insurance claimed raise prices, just deal with what you have. We all want to be flashing yes but is this is what we are ultimately going to be doing for now on on new flagship devices? It's one of the reasons they actually lock bootloaders because if it were unlocked there will be even more cries about bricks and people attempting stuff without researching, we can all argue back and forth about all that but seriously guys? Breaking your phone on purpose, obsurd.

Even if root isnt wiped during a factory reset they wouldnt see that. I would assume that once they try to boot the phone and it doesnt work theyll just use whatever software they use to set it back to stock and get it ready to send out to some other person. Im not saying this is the best idea. I just happened to stumble upon it and once i had an excuse to get a replacement i went for it. Obviously i very well could have used the stock tar file floating around and fixed it but i hate TouchWiz and the stupid features that came with the phone. I honestly doubt this is why insurance deductibles are going up considering i didnt use my insurance to get my phone replaced. it fell under the manufacturers warranty. if i wanted insurance to replace the phone i could have just dropped it "on accident".

Didnt hate it until after i had used it. I had planned on putting a custom rom on the phone as soon as i had gotten it. Ive seen how much faster the GS4 performs when its running a pure android rom. My phone is at least twice as fast now that ive switched from the stock rom to an AOSP based rom. i know it doesnt really mean anything but i also scored almost 2000 points higher on my Antutu benchmark test.

If Verizon would just unlock everything people wouldn't have to accidentally break their phones. I personally bought the phone outright to keep my unlimited data I feel that since I did that I should be able to do what ever I want to MY PHONE! ! ! Plus I pay every month for my insurance and in doing so the insurance company takes the risk that something might happen to my phone to where they have to replace it and if nothing happens to my phone well that make out like bandits because I'm still paying each month for their insurance that I don't use.

I agree with you there. What i do with my phone is my business exspecially since i payed for the phone outright instead of getting it through an upgrade for free and i also pay for insurance. I didnt figure out how to break my phone then break it. i just figured out one thing on accident and decided not to fix it on my own (which i could have done very easily). The phone also had several issues right out of the box that would never seem to happen when id go into verizon. All the negative feedback to my post has forced me to change it to a warning about chainfire 3D. but that wont stop someone from figuring out they can get their phone replaced this way, but im also not forcing anyone to do this, its your phone do what you want with it.
Wtf is this thread all about? Warranty fraud isn't cool.
Lets not start a debate judging others morality/immorality or ethical/unethical decisions. This is so subjective, we might as well start arguing about whether there is a god or start debating about when the age of viability is for a fetus. Just keep your opinion to yourself, I don't care if you want to screw the system or not, theres not right or wrong in the grey area. Just dont be annoying about it like the people who knock on my door trying to convince me to join their religion, preaching they carry "the message of god". Like I tell them, then sing a prayer about it instead of annoying me, god damnit. This should be locked, the entire thread is a logical fallacy.

Agree, this thread should be locked.
Users who think XDA is a site to perpetuate fraud are mistaken...To ask for help recovering from a bricked device is fine, you all should be fully aware of the chances you take when you came here, using fraudulent recovery maneuvers is not how we do things...be adult about your mistakes, claim accountability on your own and pay up.
And, for those who are offended about this, thanks, but instead of replying, next time just report the thread and a moderator will handle from there. Thanks
