[Q] Can't update to ICS (rooted with CWM) - HTC EVO 3D

Hi,
I've tried updating to ICS but got the black screen with the blue android icon and the triangle.
From searching the web I got mixed answers, some said that it may be because I've changed to CWM.
I'm still s-on.
What do I need to do in order for the update to work?
Thank you !!!:good:

Revert back to stock.

You could change recoveries to 4ext (see my signature) since that is what people think the problem might be. Also, ICS does not seem to work well with S-On from what I've seen in these forums, so you may want to get S-Off.

thanks but..
First of all thanks to both of you for answering..
I'm a bit new at this so a couple of questions -
I didn't change roms, all I did was to unlock the bootloader (using HTCDEV) replace the recovery and get root. This means that I'm on stock Rom no?
Does changing the recovery to 4EXT will help? cause it's doesn't seem logical that changing to a different recovery will help me install the official OTA update..
Oh and I'm using the GSM version if that matters..
Again, thanks!

To install official updates you need stock htc recovery.... Since you have Cwm it won't work.. Flash stock htc recovery using fast boot then take the ota update and everything will be fine.

I'm aware that this may seem like a dumb question, but where do I get the stock recovery from?
(I know that fast boot is that file that I have on my computer, the one that i used to flash CWM recovery)
Thanks!!

Don't know if this will work, but I just searched evo 3d gsm stock recovery in Google and this came out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540121
There is a media fire link for the recovery.....
Flash it using fast boot, relock the bootloader and then try to install the ota..... And post back the results.... But taking the ota will update you Hboot, which might not be in unlockable atm....

Thanks!!

Thank you so much!!! God bless you!
I've flashed the recovery file you gave me, relocked and the update went great!!
You made my week! have a great day !!:good:

if you have unlocked your bootloader via htvdev way why not try a custom rom? Lots of Roms out there. I'm currently on Virtuous Eclipse. Sense 4.0 is the best!

[Q] HTCdev bootloader or downgrade to 1.4?

I have a completely stock 3D with hboot 1.5, s-on, software 2.17. I want to gain root access in order to flash custom roms and such.
I saw a walk through on how to do this via HTCdev bootloader. I've also read about downgrading to hboot 1.4 and achieving s-off.
What are the advantages of downgrading to 1.4 and achieving s-off vs. sticking with 1.5 and s-on by using the HTCdev method?
Well fort you want be registered as having messed with your device to prevent a void in your warranty. The others are you can flash without any programs needed to install a kernel also you can flash splash screens. Flashing radios is also a benefit of soff. But soff will allow you to actually brick your device vs having just bootloader unlocked.

So s-off is going to give me more access. Essentially the better option if I'm willing to take the risk?
Everything I've read about downgrading to 1.4 and getting s-off is via Linux... Is there a way to do this from Windows 7 instead?

not yet...windows devices will not recognize the eMMC in the device...only linux does it,... which is not hard...just download a usb version of linux...run it from your flash drive and it works just fine....did it with my puter successfully ...and yes it is better...like you said though...IF youre willing to take the risk

Keep this in mind... S-off is great but you can fully permabrick your device with s-off, hard to do but it can be done. S-on blows but I'm pretty sure you can fix anything but a hardware failure with the unbrick method.

If I might suggest, take a look at the CD in my signature. There is a guide in post #3. It should help to ease the process a bit.

I'm willing to take the risk. I've done a lot of reading and my roommate is familiar with what he's doing.
Now, I just have to wait for him to come home... I'm tired of waiting, I just want it to be done already!

You don't need to achieve root access to flash ROMs or kernels.....unlocking your bootloader via HTC dev or revolutionary is just fine
My vote to hboot 1.4 S-OFF

Since my roommate is doing it for me (his computers and computer knowledge are way more capable than mine) I let him decide which way he was going to do it. We ended up going with the HTC bootloader unlock.
We got it successfully unlocked through the bootloader but it still doesn't have root access. Like, apps that require root won't work and he can't get anything to flash on it. Suggestions?

Thank you so much! That is awesome! I really appreciate you getting those all in one place for me.
I finally have root access and am currently running infected rom eternity and am super stoked!
reaper24 - Thank you for your input as well. I got the cwm 4... my roommate just tried to do something by going to one of the newer versions... Whatever it was he was trying to do didn't work and he went back to 4, so I'll definitely be sticking with that for now.
Next order of business... unlocking my friends' phone. She got hers in January (preloaded with hboot1.5 and 2.17). Can't get it to unlock via HTC bootloader unlock. I did read that there is a problem getting the newer ones that shipped with the updated software to unlock. I understand you need the 2.08 RUU. I found an active link and downloaded the file... Now what do I do with the thing?
Where did you find the working ruu I need one. I honestly think you just rename it to pg86img put it on the root of your sd card and hold down vol down and power. Once it loads into bootloafer it will scan the file and ask you if you want to flash it over.

If her phone has 2.17 then you can't run the 2.08. You need to run the 2.17 and then you can unlock it. I had to do that too.

CM10 Install guide?

I've been (at least trying to) patiently wait for Deck to post full install instructions for CM10 but the CM10 op is still bare as bones. Has anyone else posted an install guide or instructions yet?
I'm currently rooted with RegawMod and running MeanRom 2.1 and it's really terribly laggy and frustrating, I can't wait any longer for CM10. Do I need S-off to install CM10 or do I just wipe, flash, and go?
Thanks for any help or links!
If you are on hboot 1.15 or higher you have to fast boot flash the kernel.
Other than that its just like a normal aosp install. Wipe flash rom flash gapps.
Its been my daily for 3 weeks.

You don't need s-off. You will however have to flash the boot IMG separately by using fastboot or the app flash image GUI and a full wipe is definitely required. There is a helpful thread in Q&A called "don't panic" that will answer all your questions
Good luck

Dont use flash image gui unless you know how to do it manually through fastboot. You are just asking for issues

edit - From what I can tell from reading, hboot 1.12 doesn't have the same restrictions that 1.15+ do, so I think I'm OK but I would like verification.

Up to you though, its not required
Bit off topic, anyone check to see if you can push a new splash, right now I'm too lazy to start my PC just to fastboot one measly splash

The S-OFF guide was way over my head so I just let it be. If there's not a real good reason for doing it, and I can still run CM10, then I'd rather not.
It allows you to directly flash new firmware like radios to fix any problems a device might be having. If you have Son and want the latest firmware you have to revert back to stock and accept ota, then unlock reflash recovery and reflash custom ROM or rooted stock, you could also just flash root installer if you want to just root stock

No, S-ON people with 1.12 H-boot can flash radios and firmware from recovery. They can do whatever they please in recovery just like S-OFF. S-OFF users can flash things from bootloader and even change the appearance of their h-boot to read S-ON and **locked** even though they are S-OFF
To the OP, this is the best rooting guide I've seen. It really explains everything step by step. http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte...panda-s-htc-dev-ltevo-root-dummies-guide.html Its recommended to have Linux at least bootable, because in the small chance the phone gets bricked... the unbricker program requires linux.
I ran it in windows before the unbricker was available, no issues here
You basically just hook the phone up to it and run the program like you do for most other root programs. All 1-click
Ah yeah forgot to mention that, most everyone is on 1.15 or 1.19 sorry

Do I need to flash updated firmware / radios separately from CM10, or does CM10 include latest firmware?
Sorry to ask dumb questions, but I do hope this thread will also be a good resource for others like me.
You don't have to flash any firmware updates. There are a few users with issues although they may be related to the ROM update and not necessarily the firmware included. I haven't really checked since I'm s on. If you want to update the radios there's an update zip here somewhere, be sure to read through everything carefully. Radios are more risky then every day flashing
Alright everyone now I need some help!
I flashed CM10 after s-off, was on stocked 1.13 rooted rom.
Now when CM10 boots up I am faced with a phone activation screen. It says something like "you will not be able to place calls or access the mobile network until the device is activated". I am unable to make calls or receive calls or access the internet. I have tried reflashing cm10 and the problem persists.
In the mean time, I will try flashing a nand backup and see where that gets me. I appreciate any and all help, and I have found no posts in the CM10 thread with a similar issue.
Update: I wiped and restored a back-up, MeanRom 2.1. Upon boot, hands-free activation ran and activated the phone and downloaded a PRL update. Everything is working fine now. Not sure if I should try CM10 again or what? Any advice?

Yes, you should be flashing the upgraded firmware. You'll see the full firmware as the very first downloadable link. Flash that
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...dio-Collection&p=220556&viewfull=1#post220556
Rename the file to "PJ75IMG.zip", place on root of SD card, and boot into HBOOT to flash. Check the md5 to make sure its right. With radios you want to make sure its the correct file.

[Q] What did I do??? Need help please...

Ok, I don't consider myself too much of a noob, I have rooted my old droid incredible many times...however,
I tried rooting my rezound today and believe I was successful at least in getting my bootloader unlocked...(using Hasoon's AIO kit v3.1)
I tried loading aokp rom and it just stuck on the white HTC screen..I can get into hboot, I tried rebooting many times..I downloaded
RUU_Vigor_VERIZON_WWE_2.01.605.11_Radio_RS_0.95.00.1123r_3161E_9K_QMR_release_233635_signed.zip and copied it to the sd card, renamed it PH98IMG.zip and tried re-flashing to the same stuck white HTC screen.
I am starting to freak out and wish I didn't have to ask for help here, but I am at the end of the rope and don't know what else to do...
Any kind souls out there that can help me?
Thanks in advance...
Being stuck at the white screen means the kernel didn't load when you installed the rom. I'm assuming your phone is still s-on. You need to flash the kernel seperate from the rom using fastboot. Extract the boot.img from the rom zip and flash it from your PC, I believe the option is there in the all in one tool.
If you wan to run the RUU, you need to re-lock your bootloader first and flash it through the bootloader, not recovery.

The boot.img flashing DID work...
Now I just have to find the correct stock ROM... The one I tried said it was too old during the recovery...
any thoughts....Any links to a solid recent stock ROM??
Thanks again!!
Edit: ignore me, posted in wrong thread
If you want to stick with Sense 3.6, I recommend this one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1855605
I've download stock one for my rezound from android police website.
Edit: there is the latest one there, v. 4.xx maybe.

If you want the latest official RUU, here is a link:
(the RUU you tried to use above was a GB one)
http://androidfiles.org/ruu/?dir=Vigor Grab 3.14.605.12
There was a recent OTA to take it to .13 but it's not really necessary.
If you want to go to the global leak RUU here is a link:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ull-ruu-build-4-03-605-2-for-the-htc-rezound/
Since you are s-on, if you go to the global leak you won't be able to go back to anything official unless you s-off.
The above will have Verizon bloat, so if you want something stock without bloat you can look through the ROMs. I think there's a couple in there.

[Q] Problems with Telus 1.20.661.1 - No Roms work and can't get back to Stock either

This is last resort. I've been at this for a while so please someone help out.

Unlocked and Rooted with AIO Toolkit.

Trying to get back to stock and can't do that either. Downloaded the "RUU_EVITARE_UL_JB_45_TELUS_WWE_1.15.661.11_Radio_1.09.55.17_18.20.95.55L_release_290307_signed" and get either USB or general errors 155/159
Can't figure out how to get back to an older firmware and stock rom/boot image.
Can someone please help?

I have the same issues after the AT&T firmware update, I can't flash any ROM. The only one I can use is the stock nandroid backup.
I've tried everything with no avail.
I'll try with CWM recovery and let you know.

I was able to use CMW recovery and reinstall a backed up rom but since trying the RUU exe it worked just enough to wipe that so I don't have it anymore.
Where do I find a stock backup?
I'm reading in other threads that the RUU's don't work with hboot versions above 3.5. Not sure if that's why the RUU exe won't work for me or not.
Seems like very outdated files on HTCdev. Nice of them to break their last resort recovery tools and not bother updating them.

Did actually get it out of boot loop.
Had to catch it at a very specific position during start up to be detected long enough to flash the boot image.
Got it on the AT&T 1.19 rom now but really want to get rid of sense and get the Venom rom working. Wish I hadn't hit that upgrade button..

Because you have the new hboot, you cannot go back to an earlier rom. If you flash the rom from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235248 you should have updated stock. You will need to push the zip from the link to your phone with adb. You can then use TWRP or CWM to install rom and fastboot to flash the updated boot.img.
Thanks. I noticed others mention the hboot and RUU issue.
That's the rom I ended up getting to work. But it's stock only.
I haven't tried it yet but others are reporting that the AT&T 1.19 doesn't work with custom roms either.

[Q] CM11 install Fail's

Hi
I need a little information. I have been looking on the site but cant seem to figure what i need.
I would like to get CM11 or Avatar 5.0.6 on my incredible 4g but it keeps failing.
I have a unlocked bootloader S-Off and TWRP for my recovery. I guess my question is, how can i get this to load.
The directions stated to install the latest OTA but that will lock my phone back up. The directions also stated they were installing it with CWM.
So my question is do I need to change from TWRP to CWM to get the install to work and do I really need to update my phone and lose my unlocked phone?
OR is there a way to update the phone without re locking it?
Thanks

to update the firmware look at this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2626511
this i wll give you the new radio and power management and secute bootloader.
but it won't affect s-off or the boot image or the recovery.
you will need cwm for cm11 but i think you can switch back after the install
I didn't
If you have the latest TWRP 2.6.3.0h it works with CM11 and is supposed to have better support for SELinux.

There is a tread on the firmware. If your phone is already s-off, the firmware won't undo it. CM11 is using the radio libraries that go with the new radio firmware.
