I've been testing go launcher to see whether it suffers from home screen redraw issues and so far it seems that after about an hour of testing by using apps, keeping around 8 max apps in memory , the launcher has not redrawn yet.
The phone has killed apps but not the launcher.
Sure its a tired launcher but its fast as hell especially with animation settings at 0.5 and seems so far to be resistant to home screen redraw.
Will post back if anything changes but so far all good.
Cheers.
Nova launcher is waaaayyy better than go launcher and never redraws either!
I don't like those Chinese type things like miui or go launcher etc.

Every launher so far redraws including nova. I'm not saying go launcher is amazing I'm just saying so far it is the only launcher that doesn't suffer from home screen redraw.
Tw , apex and Nova all suffer from redraw from time to time whether people like to admit it or not.
Just trying to help :-D
Peace.

Well I would admit it if it did.
I don't work for nova or anything!
Maybe you should try android.mimic.ca and use that to upload your services.jar and change the oom priority settings.
It stops the launcher being killed off.

Surely this procedure is just moving the problem elsewhere. The screen re-draws because it needed the RAM to service what you were just doing. Then you hit home and it assigns the memory back to the launcher.
So, what would the performance have been like with the app/webpage you were looking at before hitting home if the launcher is now hogging the RAM it needed. Surely instead you'll now get crashing browsers as its out of RAM.
The real cure to this is trying to reduce the amount of RAM the whole OS is using. The ROMs are huge especially compared to the S2 which never suffered with the re-draw problem as it always had loads of memory/RAM to play with.
All these new features have cost us performance as the RAM is the same as the last model. I'd rather of had 2 cores with 2MB of RAM rather than 4 cores with 1MB of RAM. How did Samsung get this the wrong way round? Guess it must have been the whole "Quad Core" marketing crap balanced with cost of production.
The problem is de-bloating and thining the ROM down to stop this RAM issues makes this an S2 with a bigger higher res screen. All the new features need to be taken out.
I experienced my first redraw on Go launcher first time i launched firefox after installation yesterday. I uninstalled immediately as I didn't like it.
This issue would suggest 1GB internal RAM isn't sufficient for the S3.

It doesn't move the problem, the oom settings were too aggressive.
I haven't had a launcher redraw since, never had an app crash and don't experience this music stopping problem that other people are having.
Its not a lack of ram that's the problem, its Samsung poor ram management settings.
Although that's not to say these roms couldn't do with losing a few pounds, 600mb+ for a rom is obscene.
Its still early days in S3 development so I'm sure the devs will sort it all out.
Remember the s2 has had loads of time for devs to fine tune every aspect of roms and kernels etc.
Modifying the launchers oom priority has worked for me so at the end of the day people can try it or not.
I'm happy with how I have my system running.

You can try moving your launcher to the system/app folder ... tha "status" of system application is different than "standard" apps.
I haven't had a redraw since the latest few jb. I completely forgot about the problem until I saw this thread.
not that it matters, but I'm on apex launcher.

So, I have narrowed down my own lag issues to being caused by the samsung widgets. I been really annoyed with this phone and the redraws/home screen lag. Now, I have wiped, and _never_ added a samsung widget to the TW launcher, and my device is running very smoothly, with 3 home pages populated.
I came to this conclusion when I tried ADW. ADW was running well, slightly sluttery, until I added the samsung power widget. ADW was completely crippled, which makes me beleive drawing that widget takes a lot of processing. I then tried the myagenda widget with the same results. So, now, as a rule for myself, I am not running any widget that came stock on the phone.
i dont have the lag ither but i use a diff homescreen widget.
I have used launcher pro for my phones before but stayed with touch wiz on this one. I removed the stock clock and weather Alps and installed beautiful wigets and the screens are a bit snappier.

not sure i'm comfortable removing all these yet since Clockworkmod is still beta and having issues (means no nandroid backup).
I also run ADW - You should definitely run the V6 Supercharger script version 9.3.6 on setting 9 ( ends with 250,300) and i saw a big difference... also using setCPU performance setting gives me great results. still about a 10% lag i notice.... i've been bugging the devs of golauncher to optimize galaxy note and they been working with me so don't worry.... we will have our cake and eat it too, very soon!

I should have been more specific. You don't need to remove them from the phone, just remove them from your home screen.
Rooted, oc to 1.83, supercharger 1000hp..only launcher with zero lag is TW.. Currently using Go with occasionally bearable lag on app drawer and general usage.
On all other launchers though (esp LPP which I'd like to use), the app drawer is very laggy on open and close, but and changing opening speed doesn't help. Everything else seems perfectly smooth with LPP, but the app drawer itself is frustratingly laggy and prevents me from using it.. Any advice?

Bad optimization, abstraction layers, visual complexity, the number of objects.on the screen...among other things, can all cause the sputtering and stuttering we love so much.
People just care too much about visuals and they'll keep buying and using stuff even if it doesn't perform well.
Btw. SPB Shell 3d didn't lag when i used it...anywhere. But its so funky and limited that i found myself back at the stock launcher...and quick.
Have you tried SS launcher?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
Haven't tried ss.. I'm worried because everybody is reporting that LPP is perfect on ATT note, I and my app drawer is very laggy.. Not sure why mine is unique.. Everything else about launcher pro is buttery.

for me, when i use horizontal scrolling (left/right) in my app drawer, there is lag. when i switch to vertical scrolling (up/down) it is lag-free.
i use Zeam launcher.
That's strange--with these other launchers, I have very smooth operation EXCEPT for when the app drawer is opened.
Can someone comment on why there is such variation between i717's? anything we can do to rectify?
I use adw ex launcher......make sure you turn off all animations off in system.....and in launcher......turn off anything that maes visual effects.....I have 0 lag... try spare parts app...they have a couple good edits in there for turning transitons fast and faster scrolling options...also there is a build prop I believe max events should be 200....helps as well

Thats crazy, Launcher pro has 0 lag, and on a high end phone like this, no launcher should have lag at ALL!!
TSF works well no lag, sometimes it will reboot upon unlocking the screen which takes about 4-5 seconds. However there is 0 lag, and lots of eye candy, with updates HOPEFULLY on the way. The customer support is terrible though, I emailed them a few times with no reply to date.
Mine is stock not rooted.
I had good luck with ADWex with vertical drawer and transparent background.
TSF launcher is a bit wonky but ultra smooth. Hoping it gets some updates to make it really killer.
Edit-completely stock GNote still. No root, etc.

I've used the stock launcher, SPB Mobile Shell, ADW Ex, GoLauncher and Launcher Pro on my Note I717. I HATE to say it because I've been ADW for a long time, but Launcher Pro has minimal lag compared to the others. I'd say SPB was a close 2nd but you can't customize that one much. Try and you'll see, promise.

My app drawer is very laggy as well, and its jittery switching between home screens.
Coming from an Epic Touch GSII it is a bit tough putting up with the slower speeds even though I have overclocked. I decided to rebuild the phone from scratch, NOT restoring from titaniumat all and limiting the number of programs I installed. It HAS helped but it is still not as responsive as my GSII. I noitce that the memory on this phone gets eaten up and I often only have 40-50MB for running programs. On my GSII I seemed to always have over 120MB free easy. Without getting into the discussion of using app killers, I do notice that if I kill the apps the phone (app tray, home button etc) start responding more quickly. Side by side I also notice that the amount of memory available on the GSII vs Note when all apps are killed via Advanced Task killer is about 100 to 300MB less for me on the Note vs my Wife's stock skyrocket. Once Killed I am lucky to get over 250MB available where her skyrocket gets 497MB available. Not sure if there is anything I can do about that or if it is even related to the lag on the Note, but it is a pain for sure!
Still in my 30 days and I am Loving most things about the Note. However the Lag is heavy on my mind when I considor if I want this phone for the next 2 years.

i've been using my galaxy s3 for the past one month, i was really amazed by everything that phone has to offer. sadly though my phone started to lag after a week. then i got a firmware update from samsung through kies. after the update my phone's performance started to considerably improve and i was happy about that but again after a week of use the phone started to lag. i have a huge list of apps installed on my phone and mostly runs in the background and also loads of widgets too. my max ram usage usually stays at 677 mb sometimes reaches 721 mb which is too high. due to this i know its a part of my mistake too for my phone to lag because of many apps installed. so i factory reset my phone and after fresh boot it was around 584 mb. after some essential apps like facebook, twitter and few more apps my ram count was back to 680 mb.
sigh!!! now that really pissed me off. so i turned off and on few background processes in the settings until i went into the "Security" after turning off the "Ripple Effect" and BAMM!! my ram usage reduced to 420 mb and stayed there. even after installing every huge load of apps i had before my ram surprisingly still stays around 480 mb which is by far so awesome for my heavy usage. maybe others can try this and see if this the real reason for all the heavy ram usage. may be i'm wrong. by the way my phone lags no more after i turned off the ripple effect and no more "launcher reloads" too. i'm using Nova Launcher, my phone is rooted and no task killers installed. other than cf-root everything else is stock.
Hit Thanks if I helped...!!!
I'll try this now and report back
I haven't noticed a change with it on or off to be honest. I was at about 480mb before and I'm at the same now!
edit:
Hmm, 480mb before lock, 496 immediately after unlock, drops down to 476 shortly after. It uses about 20mb from what I can see.

The system can manage the RAM very well. It will end applications accordingly when the RAM usage gets close to its maximum limit. You dont have to worry about any lags. I never have to clear the memory and I reboot my phone once a week or so.

I agree that the phone should use as much ram as possible but my problem is that it doesnt keep things in ram that i want it to because all the stock things take up so much space.
For example, i play some games like "draw something" and often it has to reload the app after ive been out of it for a while. Or even worse, it has to reload the home screen icons and widgets when i leave an app. That second one is that one that really pi#$es me off. Why doesnt it keep the home screen in ram?
Also this is advertised as having 1gb of ram right? Why does it only display 780mb? I tried turning off the ripple effect with minimal change in ram usage. Ive checked the running apps but theres nothing using a particularly large amount of ram. Does anyone have any suggestions? Its really frustrating because i had a galaxy s2 running ICS which had the same amount of ram but it always had like 300-400 mb free and always kept things in ram ready to go. now i usually only have 100-200mb and it always closes the apps i want kept open, ESECIALLY the HOME SCREEN icons and widgets. So frustrating.
Help? Please?

even i have the same issues with the home screen. i dont use the default TouchWiz launcher, i use Nova. I made it a system app by moving the apk to the system folder. after this the launcher's performance is much better compared the past. even though it still reloads sometime after i launch some heavy apps like GTA or few other games.
what i think about the heavy RAM usage when compared to the SGS2 is the use of many background process for the motion and other smart features in SGS3. you can try disabling the few you dont use much, it might help reduce the heavy RAM usage but there isn't much we could do about the RAM usage.
i tried few of those unofficial stock 4.1 jelly bean ROMs, compared to the official ICS they are much faster and the total RAM was above 820mb which is a really good thing. the usage of RAM in ideal state is very minimum also the touchwiz launcher had no unnecessary reloads as far as i checked. i guess we need to wait few more days until samsung releases the official version. may be in that all the RAM issues will be fixed.
Use titanium backup to freeze the bloat.

the easy way to do it is by Titanium Backup Pro. first your phone should be rooted then Open Titanium Backup > Select the App you want to convert > then choose "Convert to System App"
if you dont have TB Pro then you must have a File Manager App with Root access.
make sure your system folder has write access
go to the location /data/app
search for the file "com.teslacoilsw.launcher-1.apk"
move that file to /system/app
restart your phone
After changing Nova to system app you will definitely feel the difference in its performance.
Yes, the ram is not to use the phone and he drove.

Phone itself does ram processes to manage load and use.
LG9 ROM has excellent memory usage. With stuff open I now idle around 480. Not very often does it go into the high 600's like before.

So, I like Sense 4. It's a lot more trimmed down compared to previous versions, and IMO 2nd only to Sense 1.0 (which ran like a champ on the OG EVO). But, it still has some issues, and I think we've all come along them. The point of this thread is to figure out ways which these issues can be fixed. Please, submit issues you have with sense. Here is what I have encountered so far.
1. Widget browser - Long pressing a screen will bring up the widget browser, which is very similar to Honeycomb. This is very clunky, and you have to scroll through page after page to find and add a widget. This is very annoying, and cumbersome.
What should happen: Long pressing on a screen should bring up the wallpaper chooser. To add a widget, the app drawer should be combined with the widget drawer like stock ICS/JB.
2. Multi-tasking - We all know that Sense's multi-tasking sucks. Not only the memory values, and the extremely conservative memory management which kills apps only a few seconds after you leave it, but the look. In stock ICS/JB, you can see and easily swipe away about five applications, instead of having a full screen, almost app in itself.
What should happen: Stock ICS/JB multi-tasking. This was implemented in the Charmeleon ROM, but that hasn't been updated in some time. Would be worth contacting the devs to see how they got the stock multi-tasking into Sense.
3. Overall memory usage - Sense uses much more memory than stock ICS/JB. Often free memory can get down to <100MB, which can hamper the overall speed of the launcher.
What should happen: Memory usage should be scaled down, using the already implemented memory tweaks, removal of un-needed services and applications, and more liberal task management settings.
So, feel free to submit any other problems you have with sense, and submit suggestions on how to practically fix it.

I agree with all of these but I really want the Stock ICS multitasking style.
"Widget browser - Long pressing a screen will bring up the widget browser, which is very similar to Honeycomb. This is very clunky, and you have to scroll through page after page to find and add a widget. This is very annoying, and cumbersome."
You're doing it wrong. You can use the dropdown menu to select the app you want a widget of, which can be quicker than the stock method. And the stock method isn't too much different from scrolling in Sense, besides the fact that you see more widgets at a time stock.
I agree. I'm moving storage from my phone, to my sd card just now, and I go into setting to cut my bluetooth off, and my transfer stopped. It's becoming very annoying by the day.
I'm definitely an unhappy customer at the moment. My phone doesn't restart my UI as much. Because I don't have Sense anymore. Thank god, for the Apex launcher.
Something has to be done asap. HTC should at least acknowledge the problem. Give us some hope. And to think there are some people, saying these things, doesn't bother them.

What about the horrid IMAP/POP/Exchange mail app? HTC really botched that one and has let it slide since people brought this up back in May.
Surely it's not too difficult to fix the "download images" option and apply smaller zoom/font sizes. No, K-9 is not the answer.
Hello xda members!
Well I saw many threads about most popular launchers, about battery tweaks about ROMs and about kernels.
I believe all of us are trying to make the battery of our beloved Samsung Galaxy S II last longer. Some of us we are tweaking the kernels and/or flashing new ROMs all the time and/or changing to a bigger battery.Well I was wondering myself about launchers.Which launcher should we choose...
So I came up with 3 (at the moment) questions.
All the launchers consumes the same battery and RAM?.And If not,
1st...as the title says, which launcher is consuming less battery?
and 2nd which Launcher consumes less RAM?
This thread is about comparing and sharing our experience and our results.
Of course every device is different.
Thanks anyway guys.

Whatever the stock launcher is for the rom you're using (Touchwiz for stock, Trebuchet for CM9, etc, etc). Any other launcher you use will be effectively run over the top of that, and naturally carry some kind of battery penalty compared with using the stock launcher.

You'll still have system processes associated with the stock launcher running. There's no way around that. And obsessing about every last 0.0001% of battery drain becomes exactly that. Enjoy your phone, and use whatever launcher has the features you want (and get a bigger/more batteries)

I tried Go Launcher EX and its my personal favorite launcher, however that consumed a lot of power for me, so now i am using apex launcher which seems to a little less than Go Launcher EX however i would definitely say stock launcher uses the least battery.
What i wanted to know was, if you decide to integrate a third party launcher into the ROM as a system app via titanium backup for example, and then freezing the stock launcher, would this consume less power as then it will be running from the system ROM rather than internal/external sd? any thoughts on that?
I find Nova Launcher doesn't use much battery when i check the battery stats
I see many of you have different opinions...Well here are mine
I've tried Touchwiz, for some reason is not working properly. :/
I've tried Zeam Launcher which I liked it best but also for some reason made my phone runs more slower which I guess it means that consumes more RAM.
I've also tried ADW Launcher which is good(for my opinion) but I had some problems with freezing sometimes.
Xperia Home Launcher is the one that I found that is running always smoothly,at least to my device, never freezing and about the battery...says 3% after 2 days and 7 hours of normal using the phone without charging(If anyone wants my ex tweaks settings let me know).
