[IDEAS][COLLABORATION]Let's Fix Sense 4 - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So, I like Sense 4. It's a lot more trimmed down compared to previous versions, and IMO 2nd only to Sense 1.0 (which ran like a champ on the OG EVO). But, it still has some issues, and I think we've all come along them. The point of this thread is to figure out ways which these issues can be fixed. Please, submit issues you have with sense. Here is what I have encountered so far.
1. Widget browser - Long pressing a screen will bring up the widget browser, which is very similar to Honeycomb. This is very clunky, and you have to scroll through page after page to find and add a widget. This is very annoying, and cumbersome.
What should happen: Long pressing on a screen should bring up the wallpaper chooser. To add a widget, the app drawer should be combined with the widget drawer like stock ICS/JB.
2. Multi-tasking - We all know that Sense's multi-tasking sucks. Not only the memory values, and the extremely conservative memory management which kills apps only a few seconds after you leave it, but the look. In stock ICS/JB, you can see and easily swipe away about five applications, instead of having a full screen, almost app in itself.
What should happen: Stock ICS/JB multi-tasking. This was implemented in the Charmeleon ROM, but that hasn't been updated in some time. Would be worth contacting the devs to see how they got the stock multi-tasking into Sense.
3. Overall memory usage - Sense uses much more memory than stock ICS/JB. Often free memory can get down to <100MB, which can hamper the overall speed of the launcher.
What should happen: Memory usage should be scaled down, using the already implemented memory tweaks, removal of un-needed services and applications, and more liberal task management settings.
So, feel free to submit any other problems you have with sense, and submit suggestions on how to practically fix it.

I agree with all of these but I really want the Stock ICS multitasking style.

"Widget browser - Long pressing a screen will bring up the widget browser, which is very similar to Honeycomb. This is very clunky, and you have to scroll through page after page to find and add a widget. This is very annoying, and cumbersome."
You're doing it wrong. You can use the dropdown menu to select the app you want a widget of, which can be quicker than the stock method. And the stock method isn't too much different from scrolling in Sense, besides the fact that you see more widgets at a time stock.

I agree. I'm moving storage from my phone, to my sd card just now, and I go into setting to cut my bluetooth off, and my transfer stopped. It's becoming very annoying by the day.
I'm definitely an unhappy customer at the moment. My phone doesn't restart my UI as much. Because I don't have Sense anymore. Thank god, for the Apex launcher.
Something has to be done asap. HTC should at least acknowledge the problem. Give us some hope. And to think there are some people, saying these things, doesn't bother them.

They did framework mods that mess with multitasking and kill tasks far too aggressively, see the One XL forums for more info.

But didn't HTC fix the XL's multi - tasking issue with an OTA? And if so, I really wonder why our OTA didn't include that same fix?

What about the horrid IMAP/POP/Exchange mail app? HTC really botched that one and has let it slide since people brought this up back in May.
Surely it's not too difficult to fix the "download images" option and apply smaller zoom/font sizes. No, K-9 is not the answer.

[Q] Joelz ICS ROM Questions

I'd like to start off by saying these are just things I have noticed and am wondering if they are being worked on or if there is nothing to do about it. I'm not trying to complain but I cannot post in the Dev forum yet so I'm posting here trying to figure out the answers.
1. Is there any way to take advantage of more screen? there is a good 1/4 inch of space at the top and bottom of the screen that you cannot use. The only reason I can think of that there would be so much space is because of the remove button on the top when you drag widgets.
2. Google Talk does not work for me by any means. If I try and log in it says I'm offline and when I click on my user name it says that it had a problem and force closes. Anyone else experiencing this?
3. How hard would it be to add virtual looping to the home screens? that is by far my favorite feature of Launcher Pro along with transition animations.
4. When will the dock and icons preferences be fixed?
5. What is the issue with the camera? Is it just the 3D? or is it because the EVO is supporting 3D the drivers are weird to handle?
I'll probably have more questions so I'll update later. I have searched the Joelz ICS thread for these answers and didn't come up with anything. I hope someone could help me with at least most of these questions. I understand programming but I'm not an android developer so keep that in mind. Thanks in advanced

1. I don't get what you're saying by that. In the launcher preferences you can disable the persistent Google search widget so that will open up a tiny bit of space but let's be honest... it doesn't make that much of a difference.
2. Google Talk doesn't work. I'm pretty sure Joel just added it in with further plans for it.
3. The launcher being used is CM's CM9 launcher, Trebuchet, and they have stated that it's in their plans to add in endless scrolling.
4. Again, this is up to CM for when they finish up the first release of the launcher since it's v0.1 alpha right now. Couple of releases off of being added in, and god knows how long til it's 100% functional. CM is generally quick.
5. It'll be just like the long haul that was getting camera to work on 2.3.x when that was the newest that we had. The camera has extremely odd drivers and it is much easier to fix/re-write for a single camera than two, of which 3D is it's purpose... I think we will have to wait on CM to fix up the camera drivers for ICS before we see any real progress in that department. I'd say camera is a long way off. :l
Hope that helps you to some degree!

That did help a lot thanks. For the first question yeah you can disable the persistent search bar but it doesn't seem like you gain that space back. Its just empty space then. Can't even resize widgets to go all the way to the top. I would say I lose almost an inch of screen space which is significant to me at least. I like my clock widget to be at the very top but on my phone it looks like its in the middle.
for question 5. So your saying even non 3D will be a while for the ICS ROMs?
Thank you for your help I really appreciate it
You can try another launcher. Go launcher works pretty good with Joelz ics rom.
And yeah, you don't get any space back when removing the search bar. That's there for the buttonless phones.

Yeah I feel like running a different launcher kind of takes away from ICS. I am hoping to keep it as my default launcher. but if no development is made I'll probably go to Launcher Pro

Ics

Okay what is different in ics vs gb for the sense roms? What new features?
Thanks
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
First I need to say that I am running Cleanrom, but I think a lot of it is what you'll see in stock.
The original, 3-button dock is no longer there. You have a center app drawer button and 4 custom slots. So a 5 button dock. You can actually group apps in a folder and place them onto the dock. Whatever is placed on the dock is your shortcuts for the lock screen. Change them, and they'll change to whatever you have on lockscreen.
I'm not sure if this is new, but the default Sense Clock widget has a shortened down version now. It takes up half the vertical space that the regular one does.
This could be the rom I'm running, but the status bar has some new icons and the fonts look like the roboto font. The drop down menu does have some ICS elements to it as well. It is now black (could be my rom?) and has the new icons in it. You can swipe the notifications closed or click them and load them (that part isn't new). The Quick settings tab has little switches in it instead of check boxes.
When you hold down the home key to go to recent apps, instead of the popup of 8 recent apps, you have the basic ICS recent apps now. It loads up a window with the list of apps and a preview window of the app in the background. You can scroll up and down and swipe to kill the apps.
I can't really see anything else at the moment that is new/different, but I'll let you know if I see something. Hope that helps.
If that is all thats new for ics... It seems stock Rezound with golauncher would be pretty close minus the Bugs...
I might be way off with this guess though, so correct me if I'm wrong guys
Posted via Tapatalk mobile app
I was running stock Rezound with Go Launcher up until last night when I flashed Senseless ICS. Go Launcher may let you mimic some of the ICS functionality, but at the cost of eating additional RAM. Sure, it's not much, but most of us here like a lean device. All the 'little' things ICS does stock (swiping apps to end them, better Google apps, better dialer, better contacts) really add up. It's well worth flashing over to a stock ICS ROM, especially given just how stable they're becoming. The improvement in battery life made it worth it for me; my Rezound no longer chews through 10%+ battery on 4G inside of 10 minutes.

Home screen redraw - Go launcher seems to have it licked.

I've been testing go launcher to see whether it suffers from home screen redraw issues and so far it seems that after about an hour of testing by using apps, keeping around 8 max apps in memory , the launcher has not redrawn yet.
The phone has killed apps but not the launcher.
Sure its a tired launcher but its fast as hell especially with animation settings at 0.5 and seems so far to be resistant to home screen redraw.
Will post back if anything changes but so far all good.
Cheers.
Nova launcher is waaaayyy better than go launcher and never redraws either!
I don't like those Chinese type things like miui or go launcher etc.

Every launher so far redraws including nova. I'm not saying go launcher is amazing I'm just saying so far it is the only launcher that doesn't suffer from home screen redraw.
Tw , apex and Nova all suffer from redraw from time to time whether people like to admit it or not.
Just trying to help :-D
Peace.

Well I would admit it if it did.
I don't work for nova or anything!
Maybe you should try android.mimic.ca and use that to upload your services.jar and change the oom priority settings.
It stops the launcher being killed off.

Surely this procedure is just moving the problem elsewhere. The screen re-draws because it needed the RAM to service what you were just doing. Then you hit home and it assigns the memory back to the launcher.
So, what would the performance have been like with the app/webpage you were looking at before hitting home if the launcher is now hogging the RAM it needed. Surely instead you'll now get crashing browsers as its out of RAM.
The real cure to this is trying to reduce the amount of RAM the whole OS is using. The ROMs are huge especially compared to the S2 which never suffered with the re-draw problem as it always had loads of memory/RAM to play with.
All these new features have cost us performance as the RAM is the same as the last model. I'd rather of had 2 cores with 2MB of RAM rather than 4 cores with 1MB of RAM. How did Samsung get this the wrong way round? Guess it must have been the whole "Quad Core" marketing crap balanced with cost of production.
The problem is de-bloating and thining the ROM down to stop this RAM issues makes this an S2 with a bigger higher res screen. All the new features need to be taken out.
I experienced my first redraw on Go launcher first time i launched firefox after installation yesterday. I uninstalled immediately as I didn't like it.
This issue would suggest 1GB internal RAM isn't sufficient for the S3.

It doesn't move the problem, the oom settings were too aggressive.
I haven't had a launcher redraw since, never had an app crash and don't experience this music stopping problem that other people are having.
Its not a lack of ram that's the problem, its Samsung poor ram management settings.
Although that's not to say these roms couldn't do with losing a few pounds, 600mb+ for a rom is obscene.
Its still early days in S3 development so I'm sure the devs will sort it all out.
Remember the s2 has had loads of time for devs to fine tune every aspect of roms and kernels etc.
Modifying the launchers oom priority has worked for me so at the end of the day people can try it or not.
I'm happy with how I have my system running.

go launcher works very great for me! no lag at all
You can try moving your launcher to the system/app folder ... tha "status" of system application is different than "standard" apps.
I haven't had a redraw since the latest few jb. I completely forgot about the problem until I saw this thread.
not that it matters, but I'm on apex launcher.

HTC Sense user moving to Touchwiz on Galaxy S3 - differences?

OK, so I've been using Android for a while with HTC Sense, what user interface differences am I likely to notice when I move to Touchwiz on a Galaxy S3? (I would have gone for the HTX One X - but no removable battery, no SD card?! C'mon!)
I also have a nice physical qwerty keyboard at the moment, so having to use a touch-only keyboard will be a wrench, how bad is it? (I can't really use the on-screen keyboard on my HTC Desire Z at all, I'm just hoping that the slightly larger screen will make a touch keyboard least bearable).
Andre
Touching "Weather" on home screen leads to "Weather app" only - no Clock, no Alarm...
Weather then needs three steps (and browser) to show ""Hourly". No animation in Weather app, also.
Ended up removing that widget completely and putting normal clock instead.
Dialer has no AI. Needs a lot of patience. Ended up adding "Direct Dial Widget" for some people I call a lot - can't use dialer at all, it's annoying.
I found no way of copying contacts to Phone all at once, like in Sense. Contact pictures are small and pixelated due to this (used to change Google to Phone contacts on Sense, and reapplying the pics so they stay in full res).
TouchWizz will link contacts properly but will miss their Skype pictures. Further (manual) linking is possible, but a bit more complicated then in Sense 4.
Adding widgets and apps in Sense 4 (I used before) is a lot more straight forward. This is a bit... well, one can get used to it, but it's different. "Hold and drag" instead of simply "Tap". Go figure.
If I remember anything else, I'll add it. Can't help with your keyboard issue, I use screen for it for a while.
So basically Sense is mostly better, but it's fixable with third-party apps. Kinda what I expected; I do like Sense, but HTC have dropped the ball a bit with the rest of the One-X vs. the Galaxy 3S.
The one thing I know I'll miss (stupid I know!) will be the animated weather graphics when you open the home page.
Andre
You can get all that from beautiful widgets and the free animation app at play store. go to getjar for the apk.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I too moved from HTC (previously Desire, Desire HD, SensationXE) to S3.
Missed the most is the HTC signature home page, lots of custom mods and libary of widgets provided by Sense. But nothing can trump replacable battery and uSD card. Take me few hours to get use to Touchwiz and Samsung apps. Now a very happy user of S3.

What you won't miss is the lag with Sense.
As for the keyboard, you just have to go cold turkey. I could suggest trying other keyboards. One or two features I find missing on the keyboard are directional arrows, because it's hard to pin point going back to a word to correct it, and the mic icon for voice to text input... I had a keyboard on my Note that took care of those two and was a bit easier to type on.. Now I forget which one it was and miss it.. lol
Thanks. I use HD Widgets on my tablet, which allows installs onto multiple devices, so I'll try that first - or maybe try Beautiful Widgets for the animations.
Andre
Swype changed my opinion of touch screen keyboards forever. It's almost as fast as having a full sized qwerty keyboard once you know how to use it.
I like sense as well but I'm not buying a phone without a removable battery either. I'm also tired of the sub standard speakers HTC keep using. I'd at least like to hear my phone ring in my pocket.
Think most of the points of difference have been covered already. Touch wiz now also has features of its own lacking in sense. Example is smart stay and some of the other motion control options.
All in all, having used a sensation up until April and a desire hd before that, I'm finding touch wiz to be quite pleasant. It's not nearly as crap as the HTC fan boys like to make out on those forums.

[Q] Galaxy SIII Sluggish

Hi,
I just switched from Apple and bought my first Android Phone. I am loving the overall experience of Andriod and the power of the SIII but sometimes, it gives me a headache.
Often times, the phone becomes quite sluggish and unresponsive for a short time and then gets back to normal. This usually happens at the home screen and the phone takes a while to redraw the screens. The phone becomes very sluggish when moving from one screen to the next.
Sometimes I notice sluggishness in the contacts and in the messages.
I have tried Apex and Nova launchers too and am currently using GO Launcher. It is great and I was loving it all the way but after about 10 days of use, even GO launcher has become sluggish and during this time, I did not make changes to the phone nor added any new apps. It seems like the RAM is full with apps and little resources available to the launcher itself. I feel Andriod can do better with RAM management.
How can I speed up my phone ? Optimize my RAM / CPU resources ? Is there a solution or do I have to live with it ? I can't imagine a phone so powerful behaving this way.
Please Help ! Thanks.
I am using the I9300 with 4.1.2
Hi
The reason for this is sometimes the ram becomes full and to free it up android starts killing up processes, including the Launchers too.
The best solution would be to jack up the RAM, but that's not possible.
One way you can avoid it for 90% (if not 100%) is by using Nova Launcher.
Go to Nova Settings -> Scroll to the bottom -> Advanced -> Check on Aggressive Desktop.
What it'll do is that it'll try to keep the launcher in memory as much as possible reducing the redraws and slugginess.
It doesn't work always, but for most of the part it does.
Root your phone and install a custom kernel such as siyah. Allows you to adjust certain gpu and cpu options as well as deliver far better sound.

Yes, rooting seems to be an option but that is the different route. I would like to try out the non rooting solutions first. I even installed Start Up Auditor and Watchdog, well theoratically it seems to be working but in the real sense, not most effective.
Q&A section awaits you
Make sure "Power saving" is off
Make sure you havent accidentally activated power saving mode, it makes the phone noticeably sluggish and scrolling skip frames.
Turn off animations in developers settings or set to .05

Ok let's get it started.
Install nova or apex and enable keep in memory from their settings.
Disable ripple effect in lock screen settings.
Go in application settings - all and disable following.

Everything Samsung which has a small blue cloud as an icon, there will be 7-8 apps.
If you only use Gmail. And don't use email app, you can disable it and also exchange services.
Disable flipboard
Disable everything Yahoo.
Disable live wallpaper and use a static one.
Have only one weather widget installed at one time. I would say default weather widget is good enough.
You will gain good amount of ram.

If I have to do ALL this .... then what's the point to buying the best in the market ? There is no better method than using all these small tweaks ?
I mean a top notch phone with great hardware and software should be able to do fine just on its own (without the tweaks) ...
Anyway ,,, my animations are already set to .05. I tried Nova, but GO launcher is just much better and faster. There is nothing in the settings or an app, that can reserve more RAM for the desktop and keep the million apps from running in the background ? Even when I kill apps from Watchdog, they pop right up after a few seconds.
I was showing off my phone to a friend who owns Apple, and right there in the middle of my Demo, The curse began and my desktop took 10 seconds to load ... it was pretty embarassing.

But this is Android my friend vastly different from the generic iPhone where everything works out of the box and everything looks the same but you are highly restricted in what you can do.
With Android you can modify and change to your hearts content, my Galaxy S3 has none of the problems you have, it whizzes along with superb battery life, people have already given good advice to you, usually noobs are told to use the search function
BTW not a chance is Go Launcher better than Nova, the best launcher in the business

.... GO launcher is just much better and faster.

I see from the above that you came from Apple... you know, you have the Android phone now, most of the stuff unfortunately have something to read or to set up. This is especially important for ANY apk which was not written specifically for I9300, as there are plenty of Android devices on the market.
and, typically for plenty: My IPhone was brilliant, and now I have to suffer, my, oh my!. Let's start from beginnig: you have changed the Launcher on I9300 for something what was not specifically designed for it (it is only COMPATIBLE, I mean: was not optimized). Try to replace it on iPhone, and then claim something, please.
OK, let's try to make your Go Launcher more playable now.
While on main screen, push menu button, then open preferences.
go to advanced, here you will find two important for you options:
1. System persistent and 2. Prevent force close.
Furthermore, unless you will root phone and uninstall/disable TW, it will be always somewhere in running processes.
Finally, please tell how many widgets do you have, Live wallpaper? etc.
Last but not least: you should look on the processes running in background rather than on apps. And feel free to use Go task switcher for that, it is add-on to Go Launcher, and free as well.
just don't use any task killers to clean your RAM, Android handles it pretty well and you're only messing up the system
Usually rooting is the best option as Samsung updates might be pushed before its stable.
If not turn off power saving option. And other small tweaks

Can I ask how you managed to do this (specifically Flipboard). I am running a typical stock International firmware that is rooted and have managed to safely remove a good deal of the junk/bloatware but Flipboard persists in returning upon reboot. Is there something I am missing? Any advise appreciated.
