So I got my GT-I9300 less than a week ago, marble white. Using it on ATT GoPlan with $50 a month talk/text/web included. With this plan you do get the $10 unlimited data for non smartphones. Everything was working fine until this morning. Data is not working anymore ? It does show up in notification bar as H and switches from H+ also sometimes 3G.
What could be wrong here?
I called ATT and they told me everything is still same with my plan and it shows as Unknown Device after I gave them the GS3 # number. Anyone have any similar experience...

If you get the H, data connection is established. So the issue must be either in your phone or on the carrier's side.
Try ping-'ing an IP through command line to see what error message it reports if any.
When i open terminal app and type ping wwe.yahoo.com i get no activity. Damn

Type *#*#4636#*#* in dialer, then go to 'Device information' and click 'Run ping test'.
What does it show in the following lines? (screenshot please)

I had a similar problem to this. Talked to ATT and Samsung. Went through the data settings several times. Finally did a factory reset and was able to get my connecting back right away.
On a side note, I can't buy apps on playstore. Anyone else have this problem? It says error, try again later after I select payment method and confirm.

Hi all, i've been having this problem with my Sony Ericson xperia Play.
My bills came in as a hefty $$ bomb. I do not have data plan, so all internet activities are charged at GPRS connection rate. I've had my mobile network switched off, so there's no possibility that applications would still connect to data? Or there is? i only use my phone for smsing and dealing calls.
I called my service provider up, and they told me that my phone's internet activity is active and running. have you guys ever encountered such problem? Could anyone please enlighten me?
Thanks in advance to all.
Usually there arent any problems like this for android. And just to
make sure, the box u checked off was in Settings>Wireless & Networks>
Mobile Networks>Data enabled right?
Normally once you get a phone, the data will automatically on. So normally I will boot up without sim at first, then switch off data.
(I've unlimited plan btw)

You could always use an app that will not allow any apps to access the network. ie a firewall like (droid wall for rooted users). That would eliminate your problem. There are many apps out there which need permission to access the network, including the stock email, google maps, the market, and etc.
I'm of the same mind as the previous posters. But if you see data being used ie. the 3G symbol or whatever your data symbol is and it lights up or is present when the check mark on mobile data is off then it's not actually off. In other words if you don't see only the cell singal bars you could be using data. Hope that helps.
Edit: Also you said "SMSing" would that also include pictures or video in your defn of that? If so those are data. At least in the U.S. they are.
There is a program called APNdraoid or sg like that. this program modifies the apn settings and dont allow your phone to connect to mobile internet. btw you can manually change the apn settings from Settings->Wireless&Networks-> Mobile Networks->Access Point Names. all you have to do is to modify the settings (add some text to the end of the apn row)

To avoid data charges (and seems that you don't have a data plan), I would suggest delete all your APN settings under Access Point Name in Mobile network settings.
If the problem still occurs, you can call your operator to disable internet access from your mobile account.

Thanks for the suggestions ! i'd just go ahead and change the apn ! But i still can't find the root to the problem. It's like paying for something i had never used at all ..
Btw, I am curious that if you tried to load a webpage in your browser when mobile network is unticked? If you did, does it load?
Hi, my friend has a problem, recently his galaxy s2 phone has developed a fault whereby data has stopped working. The green data sending arrow blinks, but orange data receiving hardly ever blinks, webpages/apps etc timeout with errors.
He was running stock gingerbread so upgraded to stock ics (no mods not even root) and did factory reset, and but continue with exact same problem.
Have tried different Sim card (same provider) fault is still there.
Tried different provider sim, works fine (H+)
If I force to plain 3g not hspa data mostly works.
I think my provider may be rolling out an hspa upgrade from 7 to 21mbps. They tell me they use this same galaxy s2 phone with no problems.
I am really stuck so hoping someone on xda might have some advice on what to try or where to turn.

Have had apn settings sent to my phone by provider and have entered them manually. No difference. It's not as simple as the APN unfortunately.
Remember phone was working - one day data just stopped.

Second stage is back up data and factory reset .
Third check sim card /try another sim
Fourth return to service centre .

Hey guys, I just came off of the Galaxy Note to the S3. I never keep the data option enabled all day because of the battery drain, plus I just manually update all my sync'd apps anyway so there's no need for it to drain my battery & use up my pre paid credits at the same time.
My problem is this. With the galaxy note when I would go to either send or receive an MMS I wouldnt have to have my data connection permanently on. It would automatically enable the connection to send or recieve the incoming MMS, download the pic for me then automatically disconnect it when it was done. No muss no fuss. The GS3 does not automatically enable data to retrieve ur messages, you instead get a little download button in ur text you have to click. Problem is even after I enable data and click download to retrieve my mms, 95% of the time nothing happens, no activity is shown that the pic is actually being downloaded and you just end up staring at the screen for an hour until you get bored and turn it off, without your mms.
Is there a setting somewhere or something I can hack that will turn on the feature that will automatically enable data to retrieve your mms just like I had on the note? Its a bit hard to believe they'd have it on there then disable it on their brand new one. Not everyone likes to have data on all day :|
Thanks guys
Do you have Auto-Retrieve set to on in the messaging app? Just checking.

Find APN setting for your network provider. In apn type, type in 'mms' without quot

mms is already in the APN section. The settings were sent to my phone after I put my sim card in. Looks like there mightn't be a fix for this... :|

Hey, I had the same problem and I just fixed it. it will take you about 10 seconds.
1. go to mobile networks in wireless and networks.
2. choose access point names
3. menu button and choose New APN.
4. Im on AT&T so this is what I put (may be different if you have some other carrier)
Name: ATT PHONE
APN: Phone
that's all you have to put, everything else will already have values in there so dont change them.
5. once youre done with this just choose the APN you just created and your MMS will work.
**If you have a carrier other than AT&T then maybe this will work exactly the same, just find a phone with the same carrier and copy what's already there.
Thanks for the tip jon, however it still didnt work for me

Oh, that explains it. you could probably use the same method but copy the info from another phone using the Optus network. for example, here in the US, AT&T has several settings that I can choose from so if one doesn't work I can switch to another (which I did by inputting the info manually)
Maybe Optus has more than one setting so you can just use another. borrow a smartphone from someone and see what settings they have, if its different than what you're using now, try the one they have.
Hi
I also have this issue but it is important to note that there is nothing wrong with the MMS settings. The problem is caused by the S3 requiring Mobile Networking to be active to send and receive MMSs, but I choose to keep Mobile Network disabled unless I specifically wish to use it.
On my previous mobile of another make, even with Mobile Network disabled, the network would come to life to send and receive MMSs and then switch off again. The S3 does not behave this way and needs the Mobile Network to be specifically enabled manually.
This is an irritation! I would love to know if anyone has a fix or workround for this.
So.. there isn't a work around because its how they designed the phone eh. Is it something that they can tweak in a custom rom? Or do I just have to wait until the release the new galaxy note and hope they they put it back in again?

are you on AT&T? If so, with the Galaxy S the problem is not with your phone's settings but on AT&T's end. turns out that sometimes your phone just disconnects from their network and they have to reset it--takes the only about 2 minutes to do over the phone.
It's on US Cellular, calling then would fix it though?

Im not sure how US Cellular works. I have AT&T. before you called them you can check your settings and make sure mobile data is turned on and you can also check your APN settings. on my GS2 I have 2 settings for APN, one is AT&T the other is Cingular. on my Wife's GS3 she was having MMS issues so I added a second APN to her phone and it worked--for a while then it happened again, called AT&T and it was something on their end.
I was able to get my Evo onto PagePlus without too much trouble. I have voice/sms and 1X data. I even managed to get the stock messaging app to send MMSs fine. I'm not able to get 3G working, I have a donor phone but its a Droid 2 and I have no way of getting the ESN changed so I can do the Donation. If anyone has had luck getting 3G to work any other way please let me know. The only other oddment I have going on is a message that pops up very often saying "Unable to establish Data Connection". Its obviously looking for a Sprint LTE or 3G connection which I cant do anything about, but does anyone know how make the message go away forever?
I have also noticed that while I am at home, I can send SMS to anyone, but when I am at work, 30 miles away, some I am unable to send SMSs to certain contacts.

I have updated my PRL to one that turns off the roaming triangle, and set the options under data to roam data and voice without asking. If I fiddle with the roaming settings too much things stop working and I have not found a combination that will avoid the message.
Is there a way to force LTE so that 1X and EVDO are disabled?
The LTE Only mode in the Device Info screen via Additional Options via the Advanced Signal Info app will not work. I am able to make EVDO Only selection work as confirmed by going to Mobile Networks under System Settings and then More Settings.
However, LTE Only selection will have no effect if Global or LTE/EVDO/CDMA is already selected. No change is made as confirmed under Mobile Networks. The LTE Only selection reverts back to the previous selection.
If EVDO Only mode is active, then LTE Only selection will prompt for Global mode periodically until the user confirms. Selecting Cancel will just postpone the prompt to enable Global mode for a short time. Unless user selects Global mode, EVDO Only mode is confirmed as active in the Mobile Networks settings page.
Another method that also failed is using the app Hidden Menu to open the IOTHiddenMenu. Under LTE Mode Menu, one can select LTE Service Forced, but no changes or popup notification appears. Popup notifications appear for other selections in the same LTE Mode Menu. The other selections under the LTE Mode Menu also do have a working effect-- it is just the LTE Service Forced selection that has no effect.
This is pretty disappointing as I believe the baseband or radio software version does not support Forced LTE. The HTC Rezound and Motorola RAZR seem to work fine with Forced LTE.

There is an app in the play store that will force 3G only. But it doesn't do the other things that people are asking for. But I've never tried it on the Note 2.

Bad news bud. This phone doesn't support SVDO. So without LTE you'll never be able to tether and make calls at the same time
Sucks because my old crappy Thunderbolt had the right radio setup for that, but the newer device doesn't. Meh. I'm just glad my area is fully soaked in 40/15mbps LTE speeds.

Lol, I think you misunderstood what I meant. I DON'T want calls or texts interrupting the data, so I want to force it to data only while on 3g since I don't have 4g at home. I used to do it all the time on my Incredible (HDR only) and Touch Pro 2 (EVDO only). I did figure it out using the Hidden Menu app though, so I'm good to go now.
Verizon did just build a tower about two miles north of my house. Surely it will be a 4g tower. It just isn't operational yet, but hopefully soon I'll be soaking up some 4g myself.

I too would be interested in something that forced 4g. I live in an area where 4g is present but weak, and it switches back to 3g which is much slower data speed wise....
The phone info app will do what you want. I had to use it for a bit when I lost my 4g prl. It will force lte only, evdo only, etc

Sorry for bumping this thread, but tried phone info, and it didn't work. I also cant seem to find the network settings in mobile networks. I go into settings, choose more settings, choose mobile network, but it doesn't have an advanced toggle, or more setting. Where do you do this at? I believe it was network mode that I clicked on which isn't there anymore. Did. I fudge this up somehow? I know I accessed it before, but I can't find it now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

These is the options I have using the phone info app. Clearly LTE only is an option. I'm not sure if it's a function of my Rom. I'm using jelly thunder with the Verizon patch from Scott.

It is an option, but when you enable it, it doesnt do anything. When ever I used it on my rezound, you would see the phone switch networks. When it would not find lte, it would show no network in both the app, and the status bar. When I do it on my note 2, there is no switch, and it maintains 3g. What version is the app that you are you are using? The other thing that confuses me is that i lost network mode on my phone in settings. It isn't in my wife's phone either, and hers is modded very little. Mine is rooted, deodexed, with multiwindow, and 23 toggles enabled. Thanks for the reply

Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
RALL4 is my baseband version. Also whenever I do change my network type, and back out of the app, it resets back to the prior mode.
Edit: here is the same problem on on another forum. It seems some have this problem, and others don't. It just blows my mind that I lost network mode in settings. It was there a couple days ago, and now it is gone. Reverted to my oldest nandroid, and it was still gone. Anywho, here is the link.
