[Q] External microphone for SGIII? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I've pre-ordered the SGIII from Verizon. I make my living as a voice actor and use a laptop running Audacity plus a bulky USB microphone to record auditions when I'm traveling. I would love to use the SGIII to record my auditions, as that would save me having to drag along the laptop. The phone would have to be able to accommodate a high-quality external mic, though. Also, I would need to be able to run Audacity or something similar, to make seamless edits and save as MP3. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, how?
Thanks!

Has anyone thought of a sound booster for Gen8?

Hey all. I generally use my A70 as my media player to and from work. But once I get on the train/around any loud noises, the sound gets drowned out. I have bought two different headphones to try and get better sound, but no luck.
I tried louder volume hack as well, but I couldn't get it to work properly.
Has anyone tried to create an audio booster specifically for Archos Gen8 devices?
If you are in a loud environment, the idea isn't to increase the volume - that will lead to hearing damage. Instead, get a set of active noise cancelling headphones. Like these.
This should probably go in the general forum. And if I put in earphones and turn up my a101, it's about 1dB from bursting my eardrums. I'll grant you that other devices WILL burst my eardrums when turned up fully, but if the background noise is that loud, I've already been deafened by it. Maybe you've got a resistor out of value that's dropping your output.
For the Eris, we found that there were 2 files that were edited when volume was boosted. Someone then created a flashable zip to adjust the settings. Here is a link to the forum. Don't flash the zip! In the 1st post he has a non-flashable zip with his updataed settings. You could read the files (they are a couple of csv files, as I recall), compare with your settings on the Archos, and tweak yours.
I'd bet that you will need root in order to play with these on the Archos.
If nothing else, you could copy the files off the Archos, compare, and learn just for fun...
Moved to general as not android development
A little bit OT, but if you're in a noisy environment the best option is not always to increase the volume. If anything you should compensate for the ambient sounds with the device's equaliser. For example, in an aeroplane you would be better off compensating for the same frequencies as the noisy drone of the plane rather than pushing everything (including the bass and the treble). This will help avoid damage to hearing. In most cases of noisy environments (for instance, traffic or people chatter) the interference will mostl likely be somewhere in the mid range... Or, for another example, a bunch of guys having a noisy conversation will produce noise in the mid-bass range whereas some noisy girls will be more mid-treble.
Even better than the active noise cancelling stuff is a good in-ear monitor with passive noise isolation, such as Etymotic or [url=http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Ears-SuperFi-Isolating-Earphones/dp/B001CW13UQ/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1296927562&sr=8-7]Ultimate Ears make
I use UE's with the foam ear inserts and spend about 2.5hrs daily on the train commuting - on the A101it I am usually at about 25% volume and can clearly hear quiet passages in the classical I tend to listen to even as I'm walking past the engine on my way out of the station (big diesel type). There are other examples, but you want 25-30dB of passive attenuation - for the train, I really recommend the Comply foam tips if you find them comfortable - by far the best results both for sound and for attenuation.
The only headphones that might be too quiet are likely either very poor quality (exceedingly common these days - every iPod ships with some) or into the crazy expensive audiophile category where you probably already know about headphone amps...

For the record: I am not advocating hearing damage...just learning.
I agree that noise-canceling buds are the best option. I have some cheap (like $20 from WalMart) Phillips noise-canceling buds that I use when mowing. I reduces the background noise, but I can still hear when I mow over the kids toys. The sound quality isn't too bad, but hey...you're on a subway so your sound quality is shot anyway.

Why still no USB audio?

Seriously...I want USB audio support for my damn phone already... Do I really have to sell my galaxy note, and get a damn iphone for this feature that should've been here YEARS AGO?
Our phones have the worst DSP/DAC ever...
Every post I have seen of yours has just been *****ing and moaning about this phone... not once have I seen a productive/informative/helpful post from you.
why don't you just sell it already and go back to drinking apple koolaid then?
LOL
Why not just use a 3.5 mm aux wire for music and leave the usb for charging in the car? Problem solved. Although, you would have to change tracks on the phone instead of the car's head unit. There are requests to google since a year ago, we might see it in Jellybean.
I agree, *****ing and moaning wont do much. If you cant stand having this device, sell it and get something else.

go bluetooth bro. it works awesomely
Explain how I said everything about the phone sucks?
Btw, I'm an audiophile. The DAC in our phone garbage. How is it so much to ask for a USB external DAC option for my phone? Iphones had this feature before they had MMS. You say i drjnk Apple koolaid whdn i sold m iPad to get this phone?? SAMSUNG's specs said this phone had USB HOST 2.0... I bought it thinking that I'd be able to use a USB DAC with ICS which was shpposed to be released for our phone MONTHS AGO. Is Apple se, retly paying google to not have USB DACs available for android? How am i supposed to have use my hifi audio systems with my phone? And dont say bluetooth because bluetooth is not HiFi. The 3.5 mm is not an option because it cannot be a line out. Honestly, i wish we had an optical TOSLINK imside our headphone jack, which would solve my problem. This is retarded that we dont have this simple feature.
Btw this is the only thing that really would make buying this phone a dealbreaker for me. I cant ever go back to Apple but I'd like to have my phone have the ABILITY to produce lossless audio and do NOT tell me how MP3 isn't lossless because i know this. I plan on acessing VLC flac files from my home network in the future.
This is in the top 10 issues of google's entire list and they respond by saying basically if someone codes it for them then they might look i to it. They MIGHT... Are you kidding? Most audiophiles who have iphone would switch over for a droid and USB DAC in a heartbeat. Apple would lose a couple hundred thousand customers for writing a few lines of code for ICS...

To answer the subject line, it hasn't been coded yet.

I have the same issues with the phone as you. There are things I love about the iPhone and there are things I love about the Note. The Note wins for now.

Besides a DIY project, may try the MHL-microHDMI link to and audio input. Most manufacturers don't seem interested in making anything but apple's 30pin audio components. My Pioneer Dual Din Bluetooth Car Stereo has a USB out the works with Note. Have to use the phone to control it though.

Sell it and shut the effin up already and quit wasting space on this forum
I love my Note, but I keep an old ipod permanently connected in my car just for music. And I have my old iphone 3G, which is only worth $50 at best, is attached to my hi-fi system at home.
Who says you have to do everything with one device? If the Note doesn't do what you want, keep your note and buy something else to do the other job. Just my $0.02.
i'm no genius - but doesn't the MHL adapter provide HDMI audio out?
wouldn't that imply that you CAN get HiFi audio out to your AVR or amp ?
then again, what do i know
If you are this anal about high end sound use store bought CDs. That or a record player and you won't need a DAC.
I love audio way more than anyone I know and I stream blue tooth audio from my phone.. Is it the best sound? No but it gets the job done. If you want high end you need to right equipment. Sadly the Galaxy note doesn't currently have the ability to do this.

What pisses me off is the only thing stopping the note from doing this is a few lines of code for USB audio.
And the note doesn't even support HDMI audio out..

Not really correct. Using the original BT compression algorithm, SBC, you get the equivalent of a high-bitrate MP3 - a maximum of 768kbit/s shared between channels and overhead so probably closer to a 256 MP3. There is a newer compression algorithm apt-X which provides lower latency and even higher quality at 384kbit/s. Overhead isn't included in that bitrate so that is the actual throughput on the audio channels. Not lossless (if that is your definition of "HiFi"), but you would have to do a side-by-side comparison to nitpick out the very minor differences.
The 3.5 mm is not an option because it cannot be a line out.

Incorrect. The voltage levels between the mini plug and line out are compatible. Keep the volume down a bit to keep the voltage down and you are fine.

I will confirm this works for my Pioneer and Jensen HU's in my vehicles, as well as my XBOX360. Only downfall is you have to use your audio device to choose your tracks. It gets the job done.
Sounds like OP needs a custom Bose system for his car, and a Galaxy iNote.

It may have been a bit of an understatement, but considering that windows is something like 62 million lines of code, a simple driver for enabling usb audio when we already have USB host 2.0 wouldn't be very much in comparison, when it should have been implemented in the first place..
Honestly, if anyone gets full linux to ever work on the note, I'm going to use that and never look back if USB audio works with it, and has s-pen support to control the mouse. I'm pretty sure that would happen LONG before android ever gets universal usb audio.

I actually thought that bluetooth audio had less bitrate, but I want the capability for lossless audio streaming from my home network using FLAC files, and the ability to watch blu ray stored on my pc over LTE would be badass as well, without audio comprimise.
Integrating TOSLINK hidden inside our headphone jack isn't has hard as you think. Many RCA and 3.5mm connectors have toslink hidden inside them from laptops and other devices, my sound card has it in the RCA SPDIF out. All they would need to do is make a proprietary android plastic mold adapter which being slightly different shaped than a headphone jack, would activate the TOSLINK switch inside the headphone jack and allow it to be on only by plugging the proprietary adapter inside, saving battery. TOSLINK can't be affected by EMF interuption. If this started happening, many things in the mobile market would change. Apple would lose hundreds of thousands of customers from the audio quality standpoint alone, more audiophiles would emerge from everywhere. Speaker development would increase exponentially. Hifi iPod docks would include TOSLINK. High end headphones would start coming with portable amps with Line Out, TOSLINK, and other options. It would be the easiest way to connect to a home theater system for high end audio. more people would be making their desktops a home server with all the audio stored on it able to stream over LTE. More people would be interested in FLAC and better bitrates. OTher companies would be profiting, driving BOSE into the ground. Companies like JMLAB, Legacy, Theil, Velodyne, Celestian, PSB, Focal, and many other high end companies who deserve more market.
I think it's a little stupid that on a device with a screen as nice as ours, we have little to no audio options available, when audio should have been the first concern in order to manipulate the market. Almost nobody who owns our phone even realizes just how good the display actually is. The black levels on our screen surpass almost any TV ever made, even if the colors aren't perfect. For example, I have a 55 inch 720p Sony Rear projection triple LCD panel tv with less pixels then my phone screen. The black levels on the phone DESTROY my tv, even if the colors aren't near as good on the phone, for cinema, it looks way better a foot from my face than optimal viewing distance with the HDTV. and, the colors on the HDTV surpass that of ANY "LED" tv you will see scamming the market today. They are LED backlit garbage twisted nematic LCD panels with terrible color accuracy. The sony has almost as good colors as my $700 Gateway FPD2485W professional S-IPS photo editing monitor actually, but still not quite. despite this, the phone still looks way better because of the black levels and sharpness, brightness and overall quality of the screen. I think Samsung solved the color problems with SuperAMOLED Plus with a different sub pixel layout amongst other improvemnts

Do not ever plague my posts saying insinuating that I'm a BOSE or Apple fanboy. I am a fanboy of nothing, besides maybe the Dodge Viper. My car sound system might've only cost me $350, from amazing creigslist deals, but it'd run me over $1200 everything brand new with a shop install. I might only have cheap polk 5.25" paper cone door speakers with only 45 watts RMS but they have 93db efficiency which is outstanding for the size, and swivel mount silk domes for clarity. my Alpine 6x9 in the back also have silk domes, and my Alpine 12" kevlar reinforced pulp cone subs might only be 400 watts RMS,but they sound damn clean for the price I stole them for off creigslist, and the custom box they're in is well enough built that even being a vented dual 12" box, if you physically tap on one woofer, the other moves like a well built passive radiator. The component speakers are driven from an MB Quart RA4200 100x4 RMS 0.5% THD amp, which is when rockford fosgate owned MB Quart, and had some quality stuff.
Then again, my home system is better, and while I only have a surround sound system comprised of my HTPC using analogue out from my Auzentech X-FI Home Theater HD, which is one of the best cards ever made for it's purpose, a few 5" Kevlar woofer, Class AB active 1" Silk dome M-Audio BX5a studio monitors, they definitely have clarity. but, my Velodyne ULD 18 is what brings my theater together. You may not understand this, or understand why, but an 18 inch woofer producing [email protected] 20Hz with 0.5% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) with under a QUARTER INCH of excursion, using a standard tar reinforced pulp cone woofer, with a servo attached to it to achieve this, is no easy feat considering the sub was made before I was born, in 1989. It was the first subwoofer ever to get a class A stereophile review. not only that, but it's flat down to 14Hz and will still push over 120db @ 20Hz with well under 3% THD. This is impressive for using only a 400 watt Class B servo amplifier. The bass quality of my theater makes my car sub which people seem to think is amazing hearing it sound like complete garbage. it makes my sudio monitors look like garbage, and anything bose has ever made sound like garbage, and it's the only piece of audio equipment I will claim to be true quality, everything else, I consider mediocre, because I can't afford a $4,000 pair of ATC bookshelves, or a $30,000 pair of JMLAB Utoptias..
But for the price I paid, I got decent enough quality, and my headphones I use (Sennheiser CX6 for fidelity, Vmoda Crossfade LP for soundstage and bass/electronic music), you can't ever tell me BOSE is quality. Maybe the BOSE 301's are good, I don't know for sure, haven't head them, but everything BOSE Iv'e ever heard was garbage for the money, and I had the tri port headphones, I had the quiet comfort 3's both as a gift. I'd never pay for anything bose has ever currently made, but who knows, Ford finally made something awesome with the new mustangs, I could change my mind eventually.
Point is, I mostly know what I'm doing with audio. As an Audiophile, I can say for a fact, Apple has a lot of loyal customers because of the audio options, Iv'e had 3 Iphones, the original as a hand me down which was broken (I'm extremely grateful for that because of the grandfather clause), the Iphone 4 as a gift before I ever cared about having a nice phone, and the 4S I traded my atrix for and couldn't stand using it once I knew what I was missing, despite the ease it was connecting to my head unit. The lack of navigation really pissed me off, the interface and texting pissed me off, the tiny screen pissed me off. I ended up deciding to sell the iphone and ipad to get this Galaxy note, which was worth it in every aspect except the terrible audio options available and the fact Samsung ripped us off on ICS release.

Do you have a screen protector on your tablet, and if so, is the noise loud in spite of it? I just recently put the armor shield screen protector on my tablet and it has cut the noise WAY down. Works great, but I haven't tried to do any recording.
yes i also have this armor shield, which is really great, but the noise of the microphone is just annyoing :/
i was at my local AV Store and they showed me some products but most of them are very big (but should do a great job) or too expensive (>200€...)

nope still not... the good ones are too expensive for me, and the cheaper ones are to big to carry around all the time.
The guy in the AV Store told me, that it would be the best to buy a cheap voice recorder, there are some which have already USB and can be used as USB Stick, so i just can plug it into the tablet and sync the mp3 files there... price is about 40-100€ and it has a great sound quality for that price.
so if you need it for recording lectures and stuff you may be good with that!
also an idea the guy in the store gave me was USB Microphone. There is the Samson Go Mic, which should have a really great quality and you can use it via USB.
I tried with an USB Audio Card on the tablet and i could use it with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.sobe.usbaudio but with so much delay that it wasnt that good.. maybe it works on CM10? didnt tested it... USB Audio support should be in jelly bean...
If you want to record lecturerecordings in combination with lecturenotes. I haven't tried it out yet but it's supposed to sync your handwritten notes with the recording.
Lecturenotes itself is pretty awesome.

yes as i saw kind of that.. you can replay the notebook with the recording and see the site where you have written at the same time...
because of the very bad sound quality (and the noise of the pencil) i didnt tried it once more...

Audio Quality - 32 BIT DAC : Best in Class?

Usually I carry a FiiO amp (I have three different models). I use them with my Note 3 and have various headphones ( Audio Technica ATH M50, V-Moda M100 and V-Moda XS, Beats Solo 2). On full amplification via the FiiO and depending on genre, I like the V-Moda XS and FiiO E18 the best. I would rate it a 9 for clarity and depth on portable device (I'm not huge into Ibiza levels of bass). So i walk into the T-Mobile store and hook up the V-Moda XS right to the phone and set the amplification to the highest setting. I would rate it a solid 8.5 (again for portable application). Although to a newbie not typically used to listening on good headphones they would probably rate it a 20.
Basically as is, the V10 makes carrying a headphone AMP a bit unnecessary now. By the way, I paid $160 for that FiiO E18 headphone amp a year ago but the going rate was over $200. The big selling point was that it was made for Android and you could switch to different tracks using the side mounted buttons on the FiiO instead of having to take the phone out, unlock the screen and move to a different track. For whatever reasons, all headphone cords don't work with all music apps on Android.
All that being said, is the V10 the best in class phone for not just camera functionality but audio playback?
I know the new HTC and Samsung Note 5 have a few advantages of their own. I'm curious to see if anyone thinks these are better on audio than the V10 based on experience.
I gave the Note 5 a quick listen, and V10 beats it IMHO. Had a fiio e18 too, good little amp.

The V10 will hands-down have the best audio performance of any phone to date. However, the question has been raised as to whether or not the ESS DAC/amp are active 24/7. It seems some apps use the standard Snapdragon DAC instead (typically streaming apps). Local content works fine as far as I can tell, and I may have found a workaround to force the ESS DAC on a session-by-session basis, but it might be something that can also be forced via software modifications produced by developers later on.
Well that's good to hear since I won't be going back to Samsung since they ditched SD card and removable battery.
One thing I thought of, the V-Moda XS is known for having a compact folding design that has "military" grade impact resistance and all around durable build quality. Which are similar selling points for the V10. Right out of the box, this is a great sound pairing. Some say the Beats Solo2 is on par with V-Moda XS on sound, but given the plastic build quality it's not really the same value for the money.
Yes, some apps aren't working. Tidal is gtg fortunately. Sounds pretty damn good too.

I was wondering about that too. Let me touch on my experience a bit.
A couple of things for reference: I briefly tested the DAC with my Sennheiser Momentum, and then with my HD 650 without any intermediary signal processing. Also, I believe that the 32 bit is an overkill, so signal-wise I don't consider this better than a 16-bit DAC for practical purposes. Still, I like having it just because it's there. My comparison is between the V10 and a Nexus 4, as well as a FiiO E07K + Little Dot Mark III at times.
So, the Momentum: of course the Momentum run well and loud, since they are easily run. DAC-wise, I do notice some added clarity and soundstage with Hi Fi on using FLACS and 320 kbps files (nothing major, but it's there, as expected). All good.
Now, for the HD 650: the V10 with Hi Fi on will do an automatic impedance/power match, which is really nice for volume control normalization. In the end, the V10 makes the FiiO e07k useless, because the HD 650 sound fine, loud, and equally clear on the phone. Now here is the thing: we know that Spotify is not affected by the Hi Fi toggle, yet the sound is equally loud and clear on the HD 650 than with Hi Fi on using local files. When I turn Hi Fi off, the amp can't power the headphones nearly as well (or at all), impedance match ends, and the volume and clarity go down.
In short, Spotify with Hi Fi off = Local files with Hi Fi on, even though it's supposedly not affected by it.
What that means to me is that they could be doing a Beats maneuver, and lowering audio quality on Hi Fi off on local files to really give people the feel that turning it on affects music. On the other hand, it could mean that Spotify (or other 3rd party, streaming apps) simply bypass the toggle and just run on the amp/dac's full power regardless. Proof of the latter would be that my Nexus 4 (and some other phones I've tested) simply cannot drive the HD 650 at the level that the V10 does on Spotify. I mean, I can barely reach a mediocre volume on the Nexus 4 maxed out.
Keep in mind that this is my initial impression, and I haven't done an in-depth sound test yet. That said, I'm very happy with the V10 regardless, since it can effortlessly power my HD 650 without having to carry an external amp/dac combo.

I don't think they lower quality for hi-fi off. It simply uses a completely different DAC. It defaults to the Qualcomm Snapdragon DAC... which is low quality.

That's what it's supposed to be like, so I'm inclined to believe it. My question is whether Spotify is really using the ESS, even if it was not supposed to. More of a curiosity than anything.

Inclined to believe what?
Someone reported getting 3rd party apps like spotify to use the ESS dac with toggling tricks so it's definitely possible that it was using the ESS dac.

Of course it's possible, but I have yet to find a 100% sure response. Not that it's a big deal anyways, since the audio is fine regardless.
By the way, can you send a link to the report? I want to test it.

Thanks. That guy is saying something similar to what I said. Difference is, I didn't even have to overlap local file playing to trigger the amp/dac with Spotify. It just goes and it can't be turned off in any way, which is fine with me. But without any more information of course I was going to have initial doubts about it.
Can the v10 replace a standalone music player?

Do you think the v10 can match something like a Fiio X3? I normally have to carry my phone and the Fiio X3. It'd be great to be able to carry just one device and not have to sacrifice decent sound quality.

I found this in another forum:
"I have had about 2 days to seriously listen to the V10 with a variety of different headphones and I've continued to be blown away. It puts the iPhone 6/6s to shame and even embarrasses (what I thought to be excellent) Samsung GS6E+/Note 5. I'm typing this in my bed listening to London Grammar's "Flickers" with my LCD-3 and V10. I'm amazed that a) a phone could power these cans as well as the V10 does and b) that there is such excellent instrument separation, transparency, soundstage, and quickness from a smartphone DAC/amp combo. I'd choose this over a FiiO X1/X3/(even) an X5. Until you get into the Questyle/AK territory, this thing is just as competent as any DAP. With TIDAL!"
And with that, I'm in

I have a Fiio e07K that I used to use on the go. The V10 does just as well, or maybe even better, than the Fiio. Assuming the X3 is comparable to the e07k (haven't tested it), I would just stick to the V10 and reduce bulk.
I think I'll sell the e07K now.

Maybe it's possible that the V10 uses the ESS amplifier not matter what DAC is used. I've never noticed a difference between DACs for the most part... my PC sound card (Xonar Essence STX), Schiit Uber stack, and V10 all sound the same. Note5 honestly sounded about the same too. Maybe I just have insensitive ears or can't pick out the differences yet, but my AKG K812's are clearly the best sounding audio equipment I've ever heard, and I try to be critical in details of just about anything I hear sound through (apart from the source components). 320kbps .mp3's suit me just fine too.

mp3 normally sounds a bit more noisy and a lot of the details i look for are normally not present. then again, my hearing is pretty good. so I do notice the diffrence between mp3 at 320kbps and flac. At most times I don't listen to my music at high volumes either and then the missing stuff becomes more apparent.
I can tell the difference using Koss Portapro with 192kbps ogg.
The sound is more transparent than G4.

Looking for a better Microphone

My son participates in several bands, and while the mic on the S9 is good I feel like I need something more.
I've tried this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014Q9YUKG/), which gave me good quality for a couple of recordings before one of the internal circuit boards cracked.
Anyone doing this with theirs that can offer some advice? Ideally, I'd like it to be "portable", but for a nerdy band parent that is a flexible term.
Thanks, in advance, for any help you can provide.

well, if youre willing to throw $160 on that item you linked above, im not sure this would be what youre after, but its a high quality outboard mic that is built specifically for stuff like this and its under $20

To my knowledge you won't get true stereo recording through the mic jack. Need a USB connection. Tried finding to record wife's performances, no luck with cheaper options.
Only usb mic for android that I located earlier this year was Shure MV88+ but I could not find this mic sold on its own. The Shure MV88+ "kit" for android includes accessories.
https://www.amazon.com/Shure-MV88-Digital-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B07M8JLFLK
Works well with Shure MotivAudio (cd quality 16bit/44.1 or 48kHz) and MotivVideo (44.1 or 48kHz audio in AAC 96, 128, or 256 format). Both Shure apps are free (so far).
PM if you want to see sample video from this mic using S9.
what exactly are you trying to capture? your previous rig looks like you were going to audio events. Concerts? Ted talk event type of thing? You a youtuber? what are the main focuses of your point in getting a better mic?
