I really want to flash a few roms. I didn't get to try out but one Rom before the unsupported message became active. I feel kinda stuck until google changes something.
I'm sure others have refrained from flashing too to keep their secure element working, yea?
Wish I had cleared out my google information from wallet before this happened back around the 15th of the month wasn't it?

Are you rooted? Because if you are, just do the google wallet fix to reset wallet, and you should be okay with flashing other ROMs.
Doesn't work. They blocked the fix.

Mine is getting the same. Went from stock ROM to Team Nocturnal ROM. No change even after uninstalling and reinstalling. Lucky you to get yours working. After all this, just give me a $10 Amazon Gift Card and end this.
Can I root
OK I have a question. I just got the EVO LTE and want to root it. But I keep seeing that I need to clear the data from my Google Wallet or it will be forever bricked. But of course I am getting an error saying its not supported buy my country (WTF). I cleared the data in the app settings but wonder is it safe to root if I dont do it thru the app. I want to root but dont too loose wallet if I do. Any suggestions or should I just wait till Google figures out what to do with wallet.
Thanks for any advice

smells of a troll post. maybe google only wanted it to work for you?
Mine still broke, at least google finally said something about the situation. Was pissing me off that no one was talking Sprint, HTC or google for a while. Just setup a friend with a GSIII on Friday and Google Wallet seemed to be ok no errors. Wonder how long it will take for fix.

not safe to root
killwrath, from what I read you should not root, you MUST clear your data from within the app itself (restore to factory). clearing you data will not help and you'll brick your secure element..

It's safe to root using Zedomax(?)'s method only. I've done it, been in your same spot.

Closed...Even if not a troll post, there are countless Wallet threads that this kind of information could be posted in, instead of creating a new thread.
I saw some reports that on the galaxy Nexus you could brick the secure element of Google wallet.
The way around this was to reset your Google wallet before doing a ROM flash.
Is this still a problem on the galaxy S3?

Reset Google Wallet from the settings in the app any time before you wipe data. As long as you do that you should be fine.

Now that you're on a custom ROM + not using Wallet, you're free to continue making changes to your device without any worries of bricking the secure element.......however, once your wallet is activated, you will have to reset it prior to performing a hard reset to your firmware / flash a new ROM or you run the risk of borking the nfc secure element. Once you're done with your firmware changes re-activate your wallet, it'll work just fine.

Thank you. So basically, until you actually need/want to use Google Wallet, keeping it reset is the best practice.

Is there any way to test if you have bricked this portion of your phone? When I first attempted to use Wallet (day phone arrived) it gave me an error about Sprint not being about to use it and it would reclose w/o me being able to do anything.
After rooting the phone, GW loaded right up, but I get the Unsupported Device error along the top complaining about the phone being rooted. My GW "activated" and dropped $10 into my account, but how do I know if it actually works?
How can you tell if you bricked google wallet? I did flash without resetting, but it seems to load fine and shows a balance. Will it just not work at the point of sale if its bricked? Or will it actually tell me when I load it or turn on the chip in the settings?

if it is bricked when you start google wallet it should say nfc error or something
wallet wont even turn on unless the nfc chip is on in settings as well
You'll get a message that says "the secure element is not responding" when you start up Google wallet. If you're able to get in and access your account you should be okay!
Phew!

These are two different messages I am seeing.
Any ideas?
Called Google Wallet. Phone not bricked, may be a problem with app itself.

Why do u need to clear Google wallet when flashing roms and restoring back ups? And how do u clear it?
Sent from my Rooted, LazyPanda S-Off, White "Destroy Mode" Evo
Go into wallet setting to clear the app. It will reset the secure element chip. If u don't the secure element could think a flash is someone trying to hack it and it will destroy itself. NFC will work for tags and between phone but not for payments. To fix this you need to get a new phone or send it in for warranty repair.
Again clear data through the settings menu in the app before any data wipes!

Yes I too am also receiving the "unsupported device" message. It has to do with root access and super user. There is another thread where some users are saying that g wallet still functions properly. But I don't know if that has been proven or not.

I just installed the update. Although I am rooted, Wallet would run and show my $10. After the update, it tells me both my device and carrier are not yet supported!
Going to try clearing data and rebooting.

Oh, that's rich!
Rebooting didn't work.
Also, I updated the app on my Nexus 7 and I get the same message on that! Its not yet supported on my device. And yet wasn't the update partially for the Nexus 7?

There's an app in the app store to called "hide my root" that allows us to hide the binary so u can still use Google wallet. But it potentially removes your root somehow. Sometimes

I just tried to set mine up for the first time and I'm getting the same message. I'm not rooted but I do have mine on Verizon Prepaid...I thought maybe that had something to do with it but apparently not.
Resetting Google wallet doesn't guarantee you won't brick your NFC chip. Plenty of ppl have gotten the secure element warning after resetting/clearing. Also a good amount including myself have never reset or cleared wallet before flashing. Mine works fine so I'm never gonna touch wallet before flashing
Sent using my LTEVO
So I know that to avoid the "secure element" issue with Google Wallet, it's best to reset it before flashing a new ROM. What about using a program such as Boot Manager to boot between different ROMs? I usually keep a stock rooted ROM on the phone, and use Boot Manager to store multiple ROMs on the SD card and boot into them for various purposes, like an AOSP to use Wii/PS3 controller for emulators.
Would booting between the two ROMs be ok as long as I don't install Wallet on the other ROMs, or would it still break it even if I didn't install Wallet on the other ROMs? Has anyone tried this, or have any insight? I'd like to be able to use Boot Manager to experiment with some of the other ROMs out there, but I don't want to break Wallet.
Secure element from wallet is no longer an iishe. Google fixed where the data goes
from my flying AOKP'd Evo LTE and xda premium
Can OP please confirm that theres no issues?
Secure element was used to store cc credentials and was verified with some sort of certificate. All sensitive information is now stored in wallet cloud servers, now it uses a virtual masterdcard and a unique key generated at the time of purchase. The key is used on a purchase and a new passkey is generated
Does Boot Manager work with the evo lye. I thought I read somewhere that it does not.

Tried contacting them but never get a response. It's a shame too. Great app. Paid for it back in the day and can't use it anymore.
