Does the new S-OFF method wipe the phone like the hevdev method does?
I made a NAND before I did it just in case but once it was done all my data was still there :victory:

Since you said you did a NAND, had you already unlocked with Regaw's method?
No it does not

How do you do a nand backup before gaining root and installing a custom recovery?
That I don't know. You might be able to temp root but I never bothered

NAND backups is the entire partition being backed up through a recovery, you need some sort of nand unlock to be able to rewrite the recovery partition and install a recovery that is able to do a full backup.
In short, you cannot do a nand backup of your system ROM, instead use something like Titanium to backup your apps since that is the most time consuming part to do manually.

No, sorry. But if you do a Nandroid backup first it shouldn't be a big deal. You can just restore it after you reinstall Clockwork.

oh okay then, whats the benefits of s-off anyways and also should i install the clockworkmod 4.0.0.5
I am having a little difficulty understanding some things about s-on and I hope someone will take the time to explain some of this for me and others.
So, I understand the basic process of S-on flashing..Rom, boot img, upgrading separately through an ruu file.
My question is when I do a nandroid backup, it seems to back up the boot image (not sure if its an image but the boot sector). When I restore a nandroid, it can restore the boot.
If I can do this through a nandroid, why do I have to load the boot files separately on all of the custom ROMs...(ie, PH98img.zip)?

Nandroid can't restore the boot image when your phone is s-on, you still need to flash it separately. Now if you're going from one rom to another that uses the same kernel, you can get away without flashing it.
I suggest you read this for more info on s-on/s-off - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641670

This was exactly my concern. If I start moving from one leak to another, I wasn't sure if I could just Nandroid back. I think its time to S-off

It does make life easier if you're a frequent rom flasher.

You actually can nandroid back if you use Con's nandroid recovery helper http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547496&highlight=nandroid+recovery+helper
If you flash this first.. it will boot you to bootloader to flash a ph98img.. flash that and hit ok to reboot. It will boot you back to recovery and you can now restore your nandroid with boot kernel and all I used this exclusively when I was S-on and it was the closest to being S-off as you could be . I would still S-off when you can , but you could use this method to switch between backups and other roms until then.

Does this create a new boot kernel when you create a backup? And then does it place in on the sd card when you restore?
If so, that would be incredible.
No it literally takes your recovery and dumps it in a ph98img.zip file and flashes the recovery to the boot partition. Then when you restore a nandroid it will restore the boot img. I guess you could theoretically flash roms made for s-off this way too.

Is there anyway to check and see if CWM recovery messed anything up on my phone? I read you weren't able to run a ruu after flashing CWM but I was able to run the bootloader version of the ruu and got myself back to stock... Everything seems fine but I want to make sure before I root my phone again and start flashing again... And I do know not to use CWM again though... TWRP 2.2.1 til 4ext makes its debut on this phone...

to help fill in some conceptual details .. the RUU is technically suppose to restore all of the main partitions on the device (boot, system, cache, data, bootloader, radio, etc).
if the RUU was successful, everything should be back in working order. CWM is not designed to touch more partitions than the RUU. Unless there is some crazy bug in CWM, very unlikely, it won't be touching more partitions than the RUU is able to restore.
following this logic, the RUU is essentially the final solution to restoring everything. if the RUU doesn't work ... it is much more difficult to resolve the issue!
hope that helps!
I was just making sure because I read of people not being able to run the ruu because of CWM messing up the /misc partition...

Whats the best way for me to update to the latest OTA ?
I used the one click root method here... I usehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671577
I know I will lose root access, but will i lose data too ?
Dont take the OTA!!!
You are lucky enough to have a device that is able to get S-OFF. Do this while you still can. If you take any OTA you lose this ability.
**NEVER** take an OTA. I can't stress that enough. Thats rule #1 of rooting
So if I want some of the new improvements / features....what do I do ?
If I were you i would run lazypanda to get S-OFF and TWRP on your device. Then do a nandroid, backup your stuff with titanium backup, and then download and flash the new ROMs & radios

If you're s-off, you can flash whatever you want...including all the beneficial things from the OTAs (radio, kernel, ROM) without the detriment (hboot). The latest firmware and stock rooted ROM have already been posted, so you can flash them just as soon as you get s-off.

I did S-OFF and TWRP.... so I would flash something like this ?
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...Stock-Rooted-Based-on-Latest-OTA-(Odexed-Only
If I go from sense to sense would that wipe my apps and data ?

Not as long as you don't wipe data in twrp. Depending on what ROM you flash you may run into some issues a clean wipe of everything is recommended to ensure that all the Roms tweaks and improvements are incorporated into the system correctly.

Phone is S-Off with Nrgz Energy ROM (ICS)
company email required mobile iron, so installed mobile iron which encrypted the phone and SD
mobile iron still doesn't work since the phone is rooted.
I did not like how mobile iron seemed to make the phone slower and battery drain much faster.
so decided to restore from the backup
But I cannot restore since the recovery cannot mount the storage (it is now encrypted!)
After searching around I think here is what I need do to get back to my old backup
1. Use Latest ICS Tmo RUU (from this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617644&page=13) and rename it as PH85IMG.zip on the sd card and flash in hboot. I am hoping that disk will be formatted in this operation and encryption will go away. Since I am S-Off, I don't need to relock the boot loader. right?
2. Would the recovery be lost? If it is, reinstall recovery
3. restore backup
Any problems with this? Any other/better methods to achieve my goal?
Thanks
anyone? ... anyone? ...
At least about the first part? Since I am S-Off .. I dont have to relock the bootloader to flash the RUU, right?
Also Under storage, I saw that I could unencrypt the SD (which would remove all contents of SD). Will that remove encryption on the phone as well?
resolved

an update .. for anyone that will need something similar ..
1. The process worked. Encryption is gone on the phone. (external sd still seems to have encryption .. I am using a different one at the moment)
2, Recovery was gone. The bootloader was locked, so I had to flash jb_hboot to be able to push recovery
3. After recovery was flashed, successfully recovered backup.
