i couldnt get LCD Density Modder to apply a new density, crashes when trying to save it

Yeah I heard of someone using a lower density that got it to boot but it looked ugly with some settings I believe

used rom toolbox. set it for 220. stuck at samsung boot screen.
cleared cache
still stuck.

re-flashing the root-rom fixes it.
all setting and data intact.

Anyone succeed with changing ppi yet? Here we are, screen the size of a planet... and the email size shows what... 12 characters across??? Duh...
So - it's driving me nuts after running slimics on my SGS at 182ppi and I'm sure stock sgs3 is in the 240 range like most others seem to be.... but the LCD modder pro that I bought isn't good with ICS roms and wasn't sure if someone has already changed their build.prop for a better ppi/dpi (never get those straight...)?

dots per inch is something that is normally discussed with printers, scanners, etc.
pixels per inch is something that is discussed with displays

Thanks for that - just seems counter-intuitive for some reason that when you lower the pixels per inch that your display gets smaller. I'd love to get a better ppi for the phone though, lots more use could be made out of that football field sized screen.

This phone does not deal too well with lower ppi settings. Used LCD Density Changer and got stuck at boot. Had to restore to CWM backup and tried again with different settings to no avail.
Used LCD Resolution to try lower resolutions without the reboot effect and it looks like crap. I could not get past the bloated numbers on my pin lock, let alone look at the monstrosity for the icons on the screen. My HTC EVO (+ dialer fix) does 161 without any issues and makes such good use of the smaller screen.
Was hoping to get something better with the larger screen in the S3. Hoping that someone finds the trick to this phone!

The one poster above used from toolbox, which is what I saw as a recommendation for ICS roms but looks like it failed for him.

I used Rom Toolbox to change the LCD res on the same day I rooted. I went from 320 to the 200 I was on my SR, then to 220, to 260 and increasing back up as I thought it was way too small. At some point I couldn't get back to 320 anymore as the max on the slider is the current res. So I had to reflash the rooted img to reset it back.

I'm a little confused here. LCD panels should almost always be left at their native resolution. Why are we trying to adjust the pixels?

This isn't adjusting the screen resolution, it's changing the reported DPI so apps draw their stuff smaller to fit on the "lower resolution" screen. The actual display resolution never changes.
The reason the lower DPI settings cause an increase in perceived screen space is because all the apps (system or otherwise) believe the display to be of a lower density, so they draw smaller text/buttons/images/etc to fit on (what they think is) a smaller screen. The display is still being driven at its native 1280x720.

Apps &Games not appearing properly

Anyone have this issue with some Apps and games not looking right on the streak's screen? One example is the game traffic jam. The cars aren't properly centered, also the game moron test. And also a weather radar app. There's a couple more and they all work perfectly fine on my girlfriends evo, but not on my steak. They have the same resolution, guess the dpi is different?

Yeah, I've experience this with quite a few games and apps. Especially with Blow Up which is annoying as its an awesome game, but I can only complete half the levels as the levels I can't do are the ones with explosive barrels on the right which for some reason have shifted into the middle of the screen thus overlapping the area you need to blow up, so as soon as you trigger an explosion, the planks of wood always shift and the barrels explode instantly I couldn't understand why it was like this as like you say, the other phones have the same resolution, but I never considered the dpi!
Blow up works fine on my Streak, stock 1.6.
Here's what the look like, gonna email the developers from whenever I run into this problem.

All 80 levels? e.g. level 12 is the first level that I can't do because the barrels on the right overlap the building. I'm running stock 1.6 too
Another game is Abduction, the background fills the screen but the platforms only appear in the top left had corner of the screen roughly the size of a normal screen, just like the Traffic Jam pic above!

Same here, I reached that level and couldn't find anyway to reduce the building with the barrels integrated in that manner; I just thought it was incredibly difficult, and not insoluble due to DPI shift!
i was thinking about it and pretty sure its the DPI. Since these apps and games work on other devices with the same resolution, the streak takes advantage of the big screen by actually using the size rather than just stretching to fit the screen. So its kind of good and bad at the same time. Good because its utilizing its screen real estate, and bad cuz of these issues we're facing :/

I saw an app in the Market "LCD Density Changer" that lets you adjust the DPI of your device. It required root to use, and wasn't free but maybe it would help?
Dell has definitely changed the Streak's DPI as you can see when you compare say how many Market apps are shown in a list view on a Streak vs. say a Droid X. They're both 480x800 screens but the streak shows about 30% more info (apps) per screen, I'd guess some game/app developers don't expect an/or compensate for this possibility.

Just to confirm, I'm using the lite version and have just completed level 12, the barrels don't come anywhere near the building on my screen.

How very odd, my abduction is the other way round.
I have the background only filling say a Nexus size screen but the platforms fill the screen, it's uber easy now!
Ok guys, after further inspection I realized the dpi is NOT the issue. The problem lays with the aspect ratio. The streak is MDPI 160 but the aspect ratio is "long" (think of it as a widescreen tv) as opposed to "not long" (4:3 tv)
See http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html#qualifiers
And a short explanation at http://android.amberfrog.com/?p=478
If you run into this issue I suggest you email the developer. I have emailed about 5 so far, one replied and said they can't fix the issue unless I buy them a streak! Haha I told him he could keep his $0.99 app and my 1 star review instead.

I have same problem with couple of apps. So far none of these are essential.

[Q] Display sharpness

Hello,
i didn't find any topic regarding the sharpeness of the Optimus One, so i created a new one. Well, i bought this phone for my wife and i'am really suprised about the great quality of this phone. I use myself a Galaxy S and so i'am a little bit spoiled regarding the display. But i have already seen that the sharpness could be better with a 480x320 resolution (e.g. Sony Ericsson X8). The X8 has a better sharpness related to the small texts in the settings menu. So, is there a possiblity to get a better sharpness on the Optimus One?
Sorry to say but you cannot do much.
You can only change system font with something smoother. That's the only thing you can do.
You can't change anything. X8 text looks "sharper" just because of a smaller screen (0,2inch).
I agree with heino81.
Screen quality is rather poor.
The screen of the Galaxy i7500 (oled) was in another league.
It is poor but you can enjoy the speed of the phone + it never runs out of ram !
I miss indeed the i7500's OLED screen. It was excelent, but it was only a nice looking phone, the lack of ram kept it out.

Thanks, I downloaded it (edit - ubuntu 10.10) and it's quite a bit better than the standard font.
However, there are still some anti-aliasing problems (notably with bigger black letters on a white background), which are probably due to the 256k colors of the screen (the right gradations of grey may not be addressable or something like that)
about AA
I personally don't understand the propagation of antialiasing on a low resolution device. It makes the font blurry and causes lots of small input lags when you zoom or scroll. Even on my desktop computer when I first tried windows vista a few years ago, the first thing I did was turning the font smoothing off. Too bad there's no choice for that here.
As far as the sharpness of texts, no, there's really nothing we can do about it. The screen they put in the O1 was not designed to display a lot of pixels, unfortunately.
On my boyfriend's O1, I find that we can't use certain widgets because they look just horrible on his screen (clockr, D3 clock and some other minimalistic widgets that display lines and numbers/letters only).
I suppose it's unfair to the O1 because we're comparing it against high res phones (im using an x10), but LG could've given it a better screen cos it kinda ruins the experience.

Works fine but it doesnt support qHD so it does not fill the screen...

It does if you download spare parts and uncheck compatibility mode. Or at least I believe it should. Mine fills the screen and I have compatibility mode disabled through LCD Density Changer
rwith a density of 275 it works. use lcd density changer or edit your build prop.
275? Man. I imagine that in itself is massive. Just out of curiousity, Nottach what density do you use anyways? I have been on 200 for a couple weeks and I just switched back to 240 (default) I think for me, 220 is the sweet spot.
i use 240. i was just playing with it this morning when i first dled gh5. found 275 worked perfectly..
Hi,
On some preview for the Atrix I read that 2.75 was going to be the default pixel density, so it makes sense that setting it to that would be OK.
Cheers!

Not really, its the EXACT screen dimensions as the iPad(2). Its a 4:3 1024x768 9.7" screen.

looks like 131 is correct.
*oh, and why the hell is this stickied... all these threads should be linked to in a 'read first sticky' thread... this is obscene how many god damn stickies there are... Whatever mod is doing this is going overboard.

So your telling me if the screen breaks, Just replace with an iPad screen+digitizer? Or am I clutching at parts?
if the screen is similar to the ipad, why does it seem so low quality?
I was on my new one all night, and I cant get over the poor quality of display.
I was just browsing, blogging and it just looks so bad compared to my work ipad or the playbook I'm currently demo'ing.
could it be the browser, websites, or is there a patch I need? Really making me question my purchase.
I think people are confusing DPI with PPI. PPI is pixels per inch, which is the 131 being tossed out. DPI is how the screen is seen by software. Dont know what it is for the touchpad, but figured I'd try and clear some confusion.

No, if you put the TP side by side with the iPad 2 (hell, with the original iPad), you can notice a BIG difference in the display quality. I think that is the way the software handles the screen. Colors do look WAY sharper and crisper on the ipad vs the TP.
Its the exact same lg screen from the ipad 2, hell you could take the ipad 2 screen out and put it in the touchpad.. android port may fix it if not we'll see some voodoo colors.

I did some lookin:
TP and iPad 1 use LP097X02-SLA1
iPad 2 uses LP097X02-SLN1
Don't know what the differences are. I don't know why the touchpad screen isn't as bright as the ipad either. (Perhaps the touchpad software simply doesn't allow it to go that high? Perhaps in that case, an android release could? Though I've heard many complain that the ipad is blindingly bright.)
Interestingly enough, samsung is coming out with a 10.1" retina touch display. Will apple get their hands on it? Probably not, actually:
http://www.tipb.com/2011/05/13/sams...olution-display-paving-retina-display-ipad-3/
I think there must be differences between displays. I've found mine to be very bright. I leave the brightness slider around 30% and find that's very bright, even a bit too bright when using in a darkened room.
I find the colours aren't particularly vibrant in general use, but the they are in the Angry Birds loading screen, so I'd guess that there's some kind of tone down colour profile set in the OS somewhere.

not exactly I'd think. While they use the same screen, they don't use the same bezel dimensions IIRC. Bezel is part of the screen, so buying the slightly different iPad one wouldn't work I don't think.

[Q] Display resolution

Love the tab but have little issue .
The screen resolution does not play well with my 4 eyes . I tried density changer and absolute system tools to tinker with everything but it still weird to me . My brothers I pad has 1024x768 and I can stare at it all day without my eyes getting tired . How could I change resolution to 1024x768 ??????????????
You can't. The only thing you can do is have the device rescale everything to draw 1024 dots across the display, 768 down. The result... no. Try changing your favorite PC to 1024x768 on a 1280x1024 display, with scaling enabled. It's horrible.
There are font options you can mess with. Haven't done so myself, but there's threads around here that mention it. Also look at the Accessibility features in Settings.
Do pay a visit an optometrist and bring the tablet with you. If you're having contrast issues with the display, there may be something else going on that needs attention. Perhaps he'll just congratulate you for hitting 40 or something, who knows - or maybe you're about to fail that stupid puff test and your own pixels are dying. A good friend of mine lost 70% of his vision in 3 months due to that stuff, because he waited. Don't make that error.
Good luck,
-sbb
