Hey guys. Sorry to start a new thread about this but I couldn't find an answer by search. Heck my wife says that I can't find anything anyway....
I just came from the EVO to a Sprint Galaxy SIII, actually two of them; one for my daughter. I've rooted both successfully and of course using CWM recovery. I come from the original EVO and used to Amon RA's recovery so I"m not intimate with CWM yet. What I"m trying to do of course like any good user is do a complete backup like Amon RA's Nandroid backup. Of course I've found backup with CWM but I'm getting an error on both phones and I think it has to do with the way TouchWiz sees the internal memory as "scard" and the real sd card as "extSDCard". Here is a screen shot of the backup so I have a few questions............
1) Am I getting a complete, fully recoverable backup? Why the SD errors? The backups are about 1.5GB in size. I'm also using TitaniumBackup to backup the apps/data. What's the proper way to do a full backup in CWM with the S3?
2) CWM won't see my real sdcard (extSDCard) so I'm backing everything up to the phone storage. I assume there is a way to change this, a newer version of CWM coming out to address this, or I'm doing something wrong?
3) When I used to do Nandroid backups I'd clear the Davik and cache first as not to have to back all that up. In CWM there is the options to "wipe cache partition". Is that the same thing as just clearing the cache before a backup/ROM install? Just wanna be sure.......

From memory, I think that error refers to an external sdcard that is formatted as ext file system and ROM modded to "trick" the phone into thinking that it is part of the data partition. This was useful for earlier phones with limited internal storage and so you could install/run apps directly from ext sdcard on boot, without loss of performance.
CWM is looking for that partition and can't find it, so gives the "error".
Don't worry, ignore it, all is fine and appears (from the screen shot) your nandroid went well.
CWM wiping cache is as you described. Dalvik is found in advance/ dalvik

Thanks for the response. That makes sense. Yea on the sense ROMs we used the sd-ext on the SD cards and I guess CWS is looking for that sense stuff. Just wanted to be sure.
As far as the distinction of the internal store the phone calls "sdcard" and the real external card it calls "extSDCard"; is there any way to change that? I'm seeing apps ask if you want to store the data on the sdcard and when you say Yes it stores them on phone storage since that is called sdcard. It seems like some programs know the difference but some do not so there is no option to store big files from some programs on the real sdcard. Kind of a pain.
Not really sure. Maybe you'd need to format ex sdcard as ext4 and use some sort of script?

Another question....is there a way to get CWM to read my external sdcard? As backups are +1GB, it's eating up my internal storage. I tried "mounting external sdcard" in CWM but it still would not read it.
Do you i9300 guys not have this issue?

if your using chainfires cwm you have the option to choose backup location when making backups. the "backup" option backups to extsdcard then you have "backup to internal sdcard"

Yes I realize that but I want to store the backups on the extSD. If something goes wrong on a flash (which has happened to me multiple times on other phones), I can't recover if CWM won't read the extSD.

Always keep a copy of a nandroid and EFS folder on an external device (PC) for safekeeping.

I am having a similiar problem except cwm is aborting when it can't find android secure..
I wanna flash the version of.cwm you have on my sprint SPH L710 so I can make a real nandroid backup.
Do u have a link ? I assume it would just be a simple flash in Odin like the first time...

You are exactly right. Unfortunately at +1GB for each backup I'm going to need that 64gb card.

I should probably post this in the dev forum but I don't have enough posts. And I should probably search first but I'm in this panic mode of being cut off from having a phone so I'm terribly sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.
I was running CM7.0.0.RC4 and decided to upgrade to CM7.0.3 and since all the other updates have gone so extremely well I decide to do this while in my car on a drive.
So first thing I did was Nandroid backup.
Then I wiped the cache and the davlik cache because that's been my recipe for success. Not thinking I also wiped the data/system stuff. Then I installed the CM7 update from a zip file.
I didn't realize what I did until I booted the thing and came up on a screen with none of my icons on it.
So I went into the reboot recovery screen and tried to do a Nandroid recovery but when I did that I just get the HTC screen staring back at me they pops up before anything else and it never seems to go anywhere else. I had to pull the battery to reboot it.
Am I doing the backup wrong? Does the Nandroid ISO have all my settings, programs, etc on it? If it doesn't I might as well do a fresh start.
When you do a Nandroid restore it should restore your data and system partitions as well (including your apps and settings).
When you do the restore, does it give you an error?

I didn't see an error so I just did another restore to check.
1 error message pops up and it says
"sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restor of /sd-ext"
When I reboot I get the same thing, it hangs on HTC screen and never goes beyond that.

This is normal if you don't have an ext partition on your SD card (for apps2sd or simple2ext support).

It's certainly strange. My suggestion is this:
1) Boot into Clockworkmod
2) Wipe data/factory reset
3) Wipe cache partition
4) Advanced > Wipe dalvik cache
5) Partitions menu > format system
6) Install Cyanogenmod zip from sdcard
7) Install Google Apps zip from sdcard
8) Nandroid > Advanced restore > Restore data (don't restore the other things)
9) Reboot

Oh that's brilliant. I'll try that.
I've done a install of the CM7 and teh google tools and it started downloading all the apps that I had stored on the SD card so the only think I think I lost was some settings and my text messages but I'll try that anyway just to see if it will work. I have all my settings just the way I want them.
So I tried that and it didn't seem to do any better. None of my text messages were saved. I had to redownload all my apps again.
Now my SD card is almost full which doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless somehow the old versions of the programs are still on the SD card in which case if they are how to I clear that space up?
The other thing is while reinstalling some of the apps failed and I cleared the notification list because it was too long to sort through them all but now I can't figure out which apps weren't installed correctly. Can I bring up that error list again?

When you make Nandroid backups, it saves everything on your SD card under the clockworkmod folder. Each backup is saved by the date (GMT) when you did the backup. On a smaller SD card (like the one the phone comes with) even a few of those backups can eat up your SD card space quickly, so you should just go in and delete the ones you don't need from that folder.
When you did the Nandroid backup and Nandroid restore, did you go into ROM Manager to get to Clockworkmod? If so, you should try doing it the proper way -- turn the phone off completely, then use volume down + power to get to Clockworkmod. In general I would avoid using ROM Manager on an S-ON device like the Aria.
Also make sure the USB cable is not plugged in. it makes clockwork act crazy.

I've been doing the restore from the Clockwordmod bootloader menu. Turns out I made a backup of ADW settings and the desktop settings so I'm right back to where I was before the install just in a more round about way.
I am using the SD card that came with it but I'm thinking I might go get a larger one now. Is there any easy way to get all my apps onto the new card? Will just coping the content work?

If your current SD card doesn't have an ext partition on it (i.e., you didn't repartition it), then you can simply copy the entire contents over from the old card to the new card. It's as simple as that.
i've planned to format my internal since it left insufficient storage left.. i dont know what's wrong with my internal memory.. i already transfered all the files like photo, music and movie to my computer, and the storage still low.. so i decide to format it, but i had read some thread in google that said if we format our system, we will lost our "certificate file" something called EFS.. is this true?
No, sdcard is in /data/media folder.
EFS and other files are storaged somewhere else won't be affected if you format sdcard in right way.
if you use recovery like TWRP when you factory reset, you will see it reports something like "Wipe data without wipe /data/media "
Suggest you do so in recovery instead of system
You can format these partition without problem
Cache, dalvik cache, internal /external sdcard, data and system, don't do anything you don't know about.
If you format system, then you have to install new one otherwise phone won't even boot up.
Just be careful.
And if you do something wrong, and you can still go into recovery and download mode, then your phone is still alive.

As long as anything you may need is on ext. SD, ie the Rom you want to flash after wiping!
And make sure your titanium backups and nandroid are on ext sd also, and backed up on pc, in other words, all usual precautions.
Grab HC-kTool from Play, and make a back up of your efs and copy that to multiple places then you are well and truly ready to go!

Hi there. Yesterday, before flashing leaked 4.2.1 ROM, I did a nandroid backup to my external microSD card using Philz Touch Recovery v. 4.63. The process of backing up was successful.
The problem came when I restored the backup. (Before restoration, I had to reinstall the PhilZ Touch recovery and, from it, I did format cache, format system and format data). I recovered my XXEMA2 ROM with all the apps and configurations I had before, BUT there is no trace of the pictures I had in the internal memory or the files I downloaded.
I tried to repeat the process, but I got the same result.
Does anybody know a solution for this?

Nandroid only backs up your ROM, recovery, apps, app data, etc. and not the data stored in your internal storage.

After going back from 4.2.1 to 4.1.2 you'll have your whole Internal Memory in a folder "0". Find it on your Internal Memory. All your data and files should be there. Just transfer them from folder 0 to root of Internal Memory and all will be like before flashing 4.2.1

I seem to be blind! I was looking for the "thanks" button, but I didn't found it (I thought that maybe it didn't appear since I was surfing from my mobile). That's why I said "thanks" texting.
EDIT: I was not blind. In the default version of the forum (the classic one) that appears on my Opera Mobile there is not "thanks" button. You need to change manually the versión to 2010 one or higher.

I do have the "0" folder with the old (sub)folders, but all of them are empty :crying:
Maybe it was not a good idea to do format cache/system/data before restoring the nandroid backup... As I thought all data were preserved in the backup, I prefered to delete any trace of 4.2.1 ROM .

Well, that might be the problem. I had also restoring 4.1.2 backup after trying 4.2.1 FW but I didn't do wiping or formating - I just restored backup and there was that 0 folder and all files from Internal were there.
first thing is i hope this is in the right forum? before i do a backup of my stock rooted unlocked phone, i was wondering if i could change the backup store location to external storage, and if i should select to backup cache and recovery along with the 4 items that are checked when i open up backup? if i dont check recovery will i have a problem when i go to restore that backup without recovery? thank you for any advice
Yep right spot. When you go to the recovery tab there is an option for external sd card. I don't worry about recovery. For my stock rooted I did system, data, boot, efs and you could they're in modern. This way you could almost save restore out of any thing

Hi guys,
I own a S3 and for one year I just dealed with the stock ROM, just root access. Saturday I decided to enter the modding world but I knew it would bring a lot of troubles...
I did a nandroid backup of 4.1.2 stock FW just before the flashing, but no way it restores, after an hour of processing it shows - Error restoring data! - it boots but it's a total mess. I even restored the original stock FW with triangle away, wipe all and double ODIN flash and then reflashing the clockworkmod recovery to restore the backup again but nope, won't work.
Luckily I did a full backup with Titanium backup prior, the real trouble is with ES file explorer: I did copy/paste of the entire internal storage to the external microsd but for some reasons it stopped at "D", "Downloads" folder... I lost everything else and I realized this only AFTER wiping and flashing, of course...
I'm trying to recover the files with Hexamob, hope this will work....
I have this two questions:
Does Nandroid work only with backup < 2.5 Gb? Mine is 4.5 Gb...
Does Nandroid backup the internal storage, too??

If I am not wrong, Nandroid does a backup of your phone (system, data etc) so that when you restore it, you got anything like it was. It does not backup the SD card though. In addition backups of over 2.5gb should work.

its all the internal memory.
/system
/data
/cache
...are all on the emmc memory and are backed up in a nandroid backup.
/sdcard is actually a mount of /data/media, however this is ignored by nandroid backups for obvious reasons

So /sdcard is the external microsd? And /data is the internal memory (I mean what you see when connecting phone to PC, Internal memory and external sd)?
If nandroid backed up internal memory would be great, may be there's some way to recover datas from backup files (unyaffs won't work, Titanium Backup just shows apps and their datas).
I'll do some further research.
no. sdcard is the internal SD, which is just a link to /data/media. to backup it, use copy and paste. no, it's not possible to recover internal SD data from a nandroid backup
Be aware that Nandroid does not backup your EFS .

/sdcard is the "internal sd"
/extSdCard is the "external sd"
/data is something different that just so happens to be the home of /sdcard
As I feared, no internal storage backup in Nandroid. But what makes me more angry is that s****y ES file explorer so crappy it can't even perform a simple task like copy-paste. If that worked I wouldn't have lost anything. :crying:
Not to mention the useless nandroid... doesn't work either.
However I did manually backed up the EFS folder, but I don't really think it matters in this case.
If your /sdcard was 90% full, where would the nandroid go? External obviously? But recovery devs cannot assume that everyone has an external sd card with enough free space to store a 15 GB backup.

Just to clarify, a nandroid backup will only backup device root files, and not the (internal) sdcard, nor the extsdcard files, from my understanding of this thread. So to do a complete backup of ALL phone data, I should perform the nandroid backup to extsdcard, and then simply copy (internal)sdcard and extsdcard to my computer for safe keeping?

I did a nandroid backup of 4.1.2 stock FW just before the flashing, but no way it restores, after an hour of processing it shows - Error restoring data! - it boots but it's a total mess. I even restored the original stock FW with triangle away, wipe all and double ODIN flash and then reflashing the clockworkmod recovery to restore the backup again but nope, won't work.
Luckily I did a full backup with Titanium backup prior, the real trouble is with ES file explorer: I did copy/paste of the entire internal storage to the external microsd but for some reasons it stopped at "D", "Downloads" folder... I lost everything else and I realized this only AFTER wiping and flashing, of course...
I'm trying to recover the files with Hexamob, hope this will work....
I have this two questions:
Does Nandroid work only with backup < 2.5 Gb? Mine is 4.5 Gb...
Does Nandroid backup the internal storage, too??
