CM7.2 vs. CM9 -- Your thoughts? - Motorola Photon 4G

I've been using CM9 for 4-5 weeks now, and I like it. It's nearly perfect, but the rotation and camera bugs aren't exactly deal breakers for me, though I would like to have full use of my phone. CM9 just got an update, but CM7.2 is updated almost daily, and I suppose everything works due to the Gingerbread drivers being available. Plus, Gingerbread uses fewer resources. It's not overclocked, but I imagine in running at 1GHz it gets better battery life.
So just wondering what the Photon/Electrify users think, and a poll for nice statistics.

I was using cm9 as my daily for many months. When the newness wore off I started experimenting with other roms including cm7. And I must stay, after using cm7, cm9 seems to feel very sloppy and forced. This is no fault of joker, just the current tools he is given. Cm7 is absolutely a dream and is leaps and bounds more customizable than cm9 in its current iteration. You'll find that everything works without flaw and that battery is much better. All in all, if you need to be on the bleeding edge, run cm9. If you want full functionality and everything to just work, run cm7.

I'm still waiting on HDMI mirroring to work on cm7, has it been fixed?

Thanks for the input. That's all very helpful. I love the hell outta ICS/CM9 and I have it set up nice, but I'm going on vacation in a couple months, and, while I'd like to show off ICS, stability and fluidity will be more important, as well as battery life.
And no, I don't wanna knock Joker either, he does great work, I'm just not sure if I'm a bleeding edge kind of guy. Part of me is (the whole geek thing) but another part of me wants something that just works. I'll get something that's risky and cool (Paranoid Android in tablet mode, for example) and then I'll go back to something safe. Actually using Paranoid Android in phone mode right now. I like the centered (yes, iPhone-like) clock.

I like CM9 but the camera stuff is a deal breaker for me. I've used the CM7/2.3.5 hybrid from peetr. It's smooth, fast, battery-sipping, and wonderful. I love the 1080p video camera. I tried overclocking it (you can do that with CM7 roms, by the way), but I didn't really notice a difference in speed, and it seems just a bit unstable. I think the biggest difference people notice in speed with overclocking, other than benchmarks, is the fact that they don't have a bunch of apps and settings slowing their phone down when they first load a new ROM, so of course it seems faster than what they were just working with.

Jellybean will be less stable than cm9 and hellaless stable than cm7 for a while. Try to remember that it's taken joker months of hard work to make cm9 this stable on a gingerbread kernel and components from other devices. Jellybean is exciting, but it's a generally small update that is meant to fix bugs and introduce a couple new apps. The problems we have with cm9 (lack of libs, kernel) will still exist.

You forgot its gonna make things extremely smooth.

Butter is considered by many to not be all that its cracked up to be. And again, considering our lack of libs and kernel, butter will be of limited help for us as of yet.

I'm pretty sure Butter will require working drivers to work properly, so as excited as I am to see a JB port to our Photons, I doubt it'll be nearly as smooth as it seems until we get proper drivers =/.

I'm currently on CM 7.2 and loving it, but will move over to CM9 once we get some leaked drivers/kernel from Motorola. Joker does some great work, and it's impressive to see how much is working on ICS without those bits from Moto.

I agree. I am using Cm7 because it is stable. I really like Cm7 but am ready to move back to a more stable CM9.

I love both ROMs, but after using AOKP i can't go back to a GB ROM

What does AOKP have over CM9?

Which is the smoothest rom?

Came back from Epic Touch (lost in the mail by the repair site after a brick, the replacement phone they bought for me from ebay has a lost/stolen esn), and I cannot stand little lags here and there.
Has sprint/htc made any improvements at all, like gpu acceleration or sd card optimization since last October? Right now I'm running Chogardjr3D blue rom, and it's night and day compared to the epic touch, where everything is silky smooth and gpu accelerated.
Any recommendations on a smooth rom?

MIUI ftw!
If you wanna stay on a sense base id say viper
Eternity is hands-down the smoothest UI experience this far on the 3D, MeanROM is probably a bit quicker but definitely bot smoother.

Any sense based ROMS have everything working. I have been using MEANRom for a couple of months and have no issues and no lag/stuttering at all. MIUI will never have 4G working as stated in their thread.

Remember OP, this is a thread asking for opinions and on a smooth ROM. I am going to have to disagree with Joe with how smooth MeanROM is. Your best bet is just to flash different ROMS and see which one you think is the best.
MeanROM has been the smoothest ROM I have used that is sense based with everything working
I have been using CleanROM for the past 6 or so months and it has been great. Always get great battery life and stability with Scott's ROM's.
You will have to play around with things stock builds work well with bloat removed . Oc kernels roms can be fast doesn't help battery life out tho. But its what you prefer and want outta things.

InfectedROM Eternity, nothing else is as fast or smooth. It now comes with the v6 supercharger script so with that on, nothing comes close to speed or smoothness. Even without the script enabled, however, it's still smooth, you'll just have less free RAM without the script

Lol everything is smooth just depends on what the OP has in mind that he wants outta a rom the looks, battery life,stock,stable...
I'm running MikRunny v1.11 right now and I think its pretty smooth.
The first rom I tried was Leedroid which is also very good, but its an optimized and tweaked stock rom.
And I was looking for something newer, an rom which contained atleast Sense 3.5 and had no serious issues.
And well you have many roms and you just can look in the threads that list these roms. Because I came from DHD I already knew what I wanted an stable rom with all phone features working and newer software like sense 3.5.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458032
These threads are super subjective.
Any launcher that is not android native will typically be "laggy". This can be fixed by increasing scrolling speed and turning off fancy animations.
I can tell you from years of doing this any rom that is a stock rom will be the same, unless they use a different launcher and or mod the animation speed.
Just use them all, use what you think is best. I have an Epic Touch the hardware acceleration on it doesn't make that big of a difference.
You should sometimes ad somethings yourself. Like the oc deamon and controller and there are scripts that improve the performance.

[Q] ICS AOSP and CM9

I'm currently on ICScrewed 2.1 right now but i'm considering upgrading my phone to
ICS roms. However, there are two major choices right now: CM9 and AOSP
what is the difference between these two setup?
What exactly is the advantage of CM9 over AOSP or the other way around?
Are there any bugs that exist in these Roms?
just wanna clarify things a little bit

I recommend the AOKP build by Fenny in Ported Development. I love the rom and have been getting great battery life. I mostly use my phone for email, text and social networking and have no complaints nor have found any bugs.
I've tried them both. CM9 is easier, AOKP has more stuff. Best to look at the threads if you want to know how it matters for what you care about.
They are both very similar and you will be fine with either.
why has this q been in the general all day? red your starting to slack a bit haha im just kidding. its saturday woo hoo!
Things aren't quite ready yet... give it another day or two, the floodgates will open soon.
I've been on fennys aokp all day and I'm loving it. Just video recorder doesn't work and right now I'm just trying to figure out how to get pics to save to external memory . But its super fast and the features are awesome especially the ocing and uving built in. I've been playing with face unlock it fun. Camera is better and faster than gb.
Haven't tried cm9

D/Ling the lastest CM9 now give it a try
Hands down no questions asked I gave been up and down both rims and aokp is better a lot more features and settings

Great idea. I was looking for a rom but am lacking the time to research each and every thread and its posts to root out the good and bad of each. I was going to post and ask myself about a decent working rom with the most working functions and with little bugs. Hopefully those with time will give feedback and include ALL the info you requested in your OP for those of us lacking the free time.
There are so many now. I know some say "go search", but not all of us have the time to weed through all details in each post. Thanks again.

Hell, I have 4G where I live and I still unlocked. Wimax is worthless with the 2500mhz spectrum. It only works outside in the middle of the street when you're not moving.
I see little mention of them here, but the ICS builds that spleef,; Th3Bill, and Teqm Moto Tegra have put together based on Joker's CM9 are pretty nice, too. I'm running CNA right now and other than two items which do have work arounds (camera needs 3rd party app and browser is set to landscape only), they are very smooth and stable. I'm running spleef's AOKP build 36 and overall, everything works great! Very usable with only a few annoyances that I am sure will be fixed in time.
I need a ROM with a stable navigation app because I travel for work a lot. So far only the stock ROM works well enough for daily use. CM7, AOKP, and CM9 all exhibit strange behavior like spontaneous rebooting or switching back to Car Home repeatedly despite the navigation continuing to call turns.
CM9 and AOKP also don't seem to work with my car dock well, I can't get any sound to go through the AUX port. I also noticed that when I drove around SoCal for a while with any of the CM ROMs, the screen will blank when the phone got hot. I restored a stock rom and had no problems in the same situations. CM7 doesn't have any problems playing music through the dock but the unstable nav bums me out.

[Q] Giving up on ICS

Was gonna wait for the official ICS update for the thunderbolt but after 4months and numerous rumors not panning out im going to root and flash a rom any suggestions for the best daily driver ????
But browsing and reading up a little but still confused on whats available??? Would love to try jelly bean but i can settle for ICS
Battery life, speed and stability are the important points for a daily driver
Whats you suggestions????
I know I'm gonna regret it as soon as i root and flash the official update will probably come out but i remember when i first rooted my OG droid I never went back so what you guys suggest??? also next upgrade will probably be taking the nexus 4 to straight talk but wanna get a few more months out of my Thunderbolt u would think HTC would want to keep the customers that run out and bought the first 4G device but i guess all they really care about is our money.

If you're looking for an ICS build there really is no amazing one yet, but Liquid's is the best you will find with Nusense a close second. My personal recommendation for a daily driver though is Thundershed, or any of the roms from reds. I am running ikream nosense and enjoy it a bit. There is also the sense based offering of it both are pretty nice. Depending on what rom you go with there are kernels and things like that to pick up from there.
If you want something bug free i recommend Skyraider zeus 1.3. Thats what im using with the lean kernel. Its very smooth. Plus there is a sweet ics theme for it. Throw in halo launcher aswell and you pretty much have the complete look and feel of ics and bug free. Everything works perfect on this rom

Proving again that all Thunderbolts are different, don't know why, but each responds differently to different ROMS.
To the OP, remember! Flashing is cheap, don't hesitate to try several ROMs before deciding on one you like.
I lean toward the NuSense but battery life isn't quite what I need... <sigh>
Another hearty recommendation for SkyRaider 1.3.
I've been evaluating lots of other ROMs and radio combos. Nothing has been as solid a daily driver as SkyRaider Zeus.
I'm really working at using Twisted's AOKP ICS, but my Bolt doesn't love it. I keep getting data hangs, and have to reset the radios via Airplane mode off/on.
And the leaked Sense ICS was way too battery hungry for me.

LiquidSmooth 3.2:good: with the .19 radio. It has been my daily driver for almost a year now. Way better than any current ICS rom for the mecha. No problems, everything works. And it all works plenty fast enough.
If you really want a solid ROM with everything working great, Sky Raider is excellent. Especially since I like having a good camera and video camera. Nice to have everything work perfectly. I love AOSP, it is very fast, but you don't get the same functionality (dont get me wrong it is very close, but small things like camera are just not quite as good) you do with Sense. I hate sense but skyraider really is a great ROM

I sent you a private message with the link. Not sure if I am allowed to post it in the forum. If anyone else needs it just PM me.
You should check out Twisted's new rom. I haven't had any problems with it and it's the smoothest rom I've had in awhile.
So can anyone give me a rundown on the differences on these ROM's? I've seen Liquid 3.2, Thundershed, and Skyraider mentioned here. Which are Sense based and which are AOSP. Are the Sense based Rom's laggy? I've tried NuSense, and it was a nice ROM, but just too laggy for my taste. I've tried Jesters and Twisted's 11-7 version of Liquids ICS ROM, and they've been great, but I'm having too many bluetooth issues which will interfere with work so it's a no go if I can't simply turn on the bluetooth and let it connect.
I understand flashing is supposed to be quick and easy so just try them all, but it seems to take me several hours to get everything backed up, flashed, and put back the way I like it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have only used LiquidSmooth 3.2. It is a Gingerbread AOSP. Any Sense ROM tends to be very laggy on either of my Thunderbolts. And all of the ICS ROM's seem to have at least one problem or another that keeps it from being my daily driver(bluetooth, wifi, camera or camcorder especially!)
It all depends on what you can and can't live without on a DD. Most of the Gingerbread ROMS's shouldn't have many, if any, issues. Some may be slightly slower than others and look different but all should make a good DD. The current ICS ROM's for the mecha are extremely fast, but usually lack in the camcorder or wifi department.
This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905083 has most of the ROM's linked(except LiquidSmooth3.2 Not sure why all the links to it were removed, Liquid is the Man tho and gotta respect his decision)

I found basically all sense roms to be laggy except for Skyraider. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Your Favorite ICS/JB ROM?

What is your favorite Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean ROM? Is it stable too?
I've downloaded a few ROMS and none of them have been up to my expectations.
I've used:
CM10 A2
Paranoid Android
CM10 is the most stable JB ROM we have right now. Not sure what your expectations are, but it's not likely for there to ever be any *truly* stable and 100% functioning ICS/JB ROMS for this phone. If you want stability and functionality, you'll have to stick with GB.

I'm not a fan of the stock GB. I need my DX2 until April, so i'm looking for something I can use with almost all functionality. I've given CM10 a go but theres a few features I need that arent stable enough. I got bored of using eclipse, and i'm not liking MIUI right now.
Sorry for being picky, lol.
I am currently running CM10 Alpha 2 and, as mentioned above, it is very stable. It is also my daily driver. Every once and awhile there are a few quirks, but that's to be expected.

I'll give it another run I guess. I just need to watch my battery because i find myself charging 3 times a day with it.
I think the problem is that you have "expectations" lol. These ROMs are never going to be perfect like they are on other devices. The core of these ROMs and this phone is still Gingerbread so its pretty much like running Windows 8 on a computer that is only meant for windows XP. It will not be perfect. (best analogy I could think of. lol). Basically, we should be lucky to even have ICS or Jelly Bean because Motorola has decided to just keep our DX2 on Gingerbread.
That said, I am running Jelly Bean AOKP. There are issues that some may find to be a deal breaker. But its easy to live with it when you learn how to work around them.

I'm going to look through a few more ROMs and see if there are any I like. I'll probably have to stick with Eclipse.
