Unlocking bootloader required? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have an S3 coming tomorrow so decided to check out the forums and get a head start.
I have gotten a little confused, my first android phone was the xperia play which requires me to unlock the bootloader to flash roms and is also reliant on being an unbranded version.
Is this not the case with the S3? I have done alot of reading already but don't quite understand the process.
My phone will be an orange handset, so is it just a case of flashing cwm and then flashing a Rom? I'm also used to using fastboot which I believe isn't compatible with the S3 is that correct?
Sorry if this post is annoying but I need to get things straight in my head as alot of what I'm reading goes straight over my head lol
Thanks for any help

Welcome to samsung. They dont behave like morons by locking bootloaders. If u want to flash a stock rom pc/mobile odin is the tool. For custom roms u just need to get cwm to flash.

Problems/doubts related to rooting the phone

I was going through threads on rooting, ROMs, kernels and bricking. Before reading threads about bricking I wanted to root my phone but after reading I got scared of bricking my phone which I think is difficult to debrick (unbrick).
Is it really the case that we cannot debrick the phone at home? Is it ok to root with such a consequence?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
All I can say is if you're that worried about it, don't root your phone or flash anything. Leave it on stock & enjoy it.
Is it possible to change ROM without rooting the phone?
And what are the chances of bricking the phone while rooting? And if bricked what is procedure to make it as earlier

use this to root your S2...It is 100% risk free. However use only if u are on ICS
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Also, read everything before u flash a rom/kernel..95% of them get bricked without reading or consulting properly

I read it, but I didn't not find anything written as it won't brick the phone. So just wanted to confirm even if I made any mistake, it won't brick my phone, right?

if you don't wanna brick your phone, then don't screw up in following the instructions
Look at method 1 in the link from my signature
It will not brick your phone as I now include cwm4

The thing is u are just installing CWM and busybox that gives you root by that method mentioned. Believe me i was also afraid and i rooted using that method..took hardly 30s lol
And it wont wipe anything..
Just go ahead..u aint flashing any inseure kernel or any rom..so there is no chance of bricking..Go ahead

i was trying to root my SGS2 using this method but i never found file CWM.zip file in the "apply updates from external storage" options. i tried to moving it to sdcard (main folder), creating a folder in sdcard and by moving it to folder android under sdcard (which is visible in those options) but couldn't find CWM.zip file. i use volume up + home key + power button to go to recovery mode.
plz help me regarding that why i couldn't find that file
Done with rooting.

New to sgs2....some help please

Hey guys..I got the sgs2 from a couple of days to try it out ..so I have a couple of questions...
What's a firmware ??does it affect flashing ROMs or kernels ?
How do I flash a kernel ?
What's Odin?
Does cwm come with the kernel ?
In case i got stuck in a boot loop and I didn't have a nandroid backup ..is there any other way to restore phone to stock ??
does every ROM need a certain kernel ??or all on the same one
Am I able to flash all ROMs that are in the development section
Sorry for asking lots of questions ..but I wanna know what I'm doing ...
Thanks in advance

I personally think it's quite weird you don't press the thanks button for TheATHEiST, but when you get an answer you like you actually do. These all are the basic questions when it comes to rooting and flashing etc., and you clearly didn't seem to take the effort to read and search for yourself.

I flashed a custom ROM today, it worked at first boot... But then I reboot it and it got stuck at the Samsung logo.... (Where the phone model appears).... I cant boot into recovery... What can I do? D:
You soft bricked your phone..
Probably your bootloader must b locked..
That resulted into this..
For locked bootloader you should go for a stock Rom..

Before you try to help others, I suggest you do some reading and get your facts straight yourself.
I9100 does not have a locked bootloader. Full stop.
In addition, no, the key combo which has been posted is download mode.
So, helping others is great. Giving others basic info which is blatantly wrong is not great. I'm not saying you have to be right 100% of the time, but get the basics sorted before you confuse others please.
OP, if you can get into download mode then flash a stock Rom via Odin, re root and then flash away.

Xperia U about to be thrown at garbage

I'm sick of this junk phone!!!
It's locked and I have no idea who told those guys from the development section that it can be rooted even if bootloader is locked, couse i'll be damn if it worked for me.
I tryed every option shown and none worked.
Hell it dosen't even show me the restore option, every time I have to manualy go to settings and hit restore.
And in <<only one>> option I get the RootMe restore option, the one for those with open bootloader...
And I also get a lot of error in the command promt, and that shouldn't happen.
Dose anyone have any suggestions or anything? Couse I can't talk with those guys due to this new user thing... X(

I found this after 2 minutes searching xda...
The guide is for Xperia U 6.1.1.B.1.10 , i don't know what firmware do you have.. so if its any newer than 6.1.1.B.1.10 than you should just flash ONLY the kernel for 6.1.1.B.1.10 , then follow this guide till the end, then after root is achieved.. flash back the original kernel for your version of firmware.
I always root this way, and i never had any problems , just before rooting set the display of your phone to NOT turn off for at least 5 minutes, not 30 seconds as it is at default.
I have some kernels if you need them
Xperia U 6.1.1.B.1.10
Xperia U 6.1.1.B.1.54
Xperia U 6.1.1.B.1.100
I have the 6.1.1.B.1.54 and my god haven't I tryed this option too. It was the very first method I found on xda back in 2012 and it failed. I will try it again however but I expect the same result as the first time...

all u need is a little patience. first flash stock 6.1.1.b.1.10.ftf that u can download from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391151
in the android 4.0 section flash it using flashtool and repeat the same methods u tried earlier and report it.
It doesn't matter dump ur phone but being this way u'll never get to learn stuff............
Remember to calm down first, so your head will be clear. I was also exasperated when I was unable to root my phone with .54 kernel. I had a lot of difficulties because I am on ubuntu 13.10 and I had to first properly install the packages required by flashtool. After a gruelling 3 days of failures I decided to step back a while so I could calm down and relax. Finally I got my phone rooted after I redownloaded a .10 kernel.

When u hurry hurry hurry u will overlook a ton of things and miss a lot of essential steps even though you say "i have tried all methods and did them correct" a human is a human and obviously can make mistakes without even knowing them. and then u fail and get hatred but thats the part where u need to cool down. In this thread i have seen a lot of Correct answers for you i even used them and managed to root my Xperia U st25i with 1.54 firmware aswell the kernel is essential in it to so take some time and relax read the threads properly and even if something fails to download Search on XDA or google and u will have so much correct answers that u will be amazed of
if u are on .54 fw then u need to download .10 kernel and flash it via flashtool and then use bin4ry's method (restoring the RootMe file) and then reflash the .54 kernel
u will get the kernel in the op of the thread linked below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028139
and if u seriously want to get into rooting and tweaking your phone's system then the first thing you need is a calm mind or else you will end up bricking your device

Help with some confusion about 4.3 mj9

Ok i bought a note 2 that already has the stock 4.3 mj9 update. From what I have read you can root it but can't put custom recovery due to locked bootloader. But then I read about using strap and can run tw based roms. So I'm confused and don't want a bricked phone. Here is what I want if it's possible. I want to run Nublia rom the one that's basically a note 3. Can someone clarify if this is possible and work correctly. Also the steps involved. I don't need detail for detail if I can cause I can look up and do the steps needed. Like root install strap? Install rom? Or can't be done wait till an unlock is available if ever?

I'm still on 4.1.2 with TWRP recovery.... but I've been following the threads on Safestrap.... so I hope I can help a little.
Other users are reporting that they're successfully using 4.3 Custom ROM's with Safestrap Beta for rooted 4.3 Sch-i605 with the locked bootloader.... This link to the thread on Safestrap Beta should help answer some questions for you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51616723 .... People in the Safestrap Beta thread should be able to offer assistance with flashing Safestrap and a 4.3 Custom ROM after you get rooted. (From what I understand....at present, Safestrap only works with 4.3 TW ROM's with the stock 4.3 kernel... Also, they are still working out bugs.... so you'll have to flash over your stock ROM until they get where you can boot from ROM slots.... you will want to create a backup up of the stock ROM obviously before doing that).
With the N3bula ROM (or any TW ROM's on Safestrap).... people say a key thing is to make sure you choose to install the stock kernel when you install the ROM.
Here's a link to direct you to the Saferoot thread to help root your phone.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49389228
I don't take any credit for any of this information and would encourage you to thank the original posters and developers for all their help and awesome work.
Good luck.

Yep safe strap is the way to go.. root and then use safe strap..
Good choice on the ROM just playing..
But from what I read you need to do some modding of the ROM zip contents..
In N3bula we let you choose 2 kernels.. you can NOT flash a kernel with safe strap.. Soo you need to remove that option in the aroma script..
Then you should be good to flash..
I will be posting a NEW build most likely tomorrow and I will add a Safe Strap zip so it's up to you to hold off..
Also poke your head into the safe strap and make sure my steps are correct, since I do not run safe strap. .and also hit "Thanks" on @Beastmode profile bc he is the one that got safe strap up and running for you guys:thumbup:

I've been contemplating trying out some 4.3 Roms and I'm gonna check out Trans Nebula Team's newest N3bula build this weekend . It's great that Safestrap is being developed for those on 4.3 locked stock and I hope you get to enjoy some custom Rom's soon. .
