I'm getting a used Vibrant and i was planning on using it on AT&T, but since i have a go phone i was wondering if i could switch to the unlimited plan and get unlimited DATA since its not a AT&T branded phone? Thank you
Hoping someone could help me, thanks
I highly don't recommend this. You'd have to unlock your vibrant to even work with at&t, but even then, this doesn't sound like a good idea. Maybe try a captivate?

By the way, what are you asking? Non-at&t phones have nothing to do with the plan...

Actually, a non-AT&T phone has EVERYTHING to do with getting data. If you use an AT&T Android(like the Captivate), they won't let you access data. Data is blocked for AT&T smartphones on the $50 unlimited GoPhone plan.
So, if you want data on the $50 unlimited plan, you MUST use a non-AT&T phone. The Vibrant is a good choice. It supports the AT&T 3G bands.

just go with net10 or straighttalk...at&t bands, and unlimited everything for approx $45 a month.
I've bounced my vibrant around different at&t mvno's for a couple years now with no problems (short of the mvno's themselves...service/data has been stellar).
been with net10 for a few months now, and so far they've been the easiest and most professional mvno to deal with...their unlimited plan is actualIy better than their parent at&t's for regional use imo....highly recommend them if you are in an area with crappy tmo coverage (like me), or are just tired of tmo.

Hey guys I just bout my Atrix the other day off contract and I got this text.... AT&T Free Msg: Did you know an eligible data plan is required for your 4G Smartphone? Pls call 611 to select a plan and establish your 4G data connection today and I have the unlimited data plan from forever ago. Am I safe?

I get the message once a week, as well as an email. It happens when you still have the unlimited plan. They can't make you change your plan. I would not worry.

I've read that they send you those messages and then they change your plan to data if you call them but if you don't they just keep sending you the message without doing actually changing your plan.
But I don't actually have AT&T so I'm just talking from word of mouth(or keyboard if you will...)

So if you call that number by mistake then they change it automatically or do you have to confirm it with them?

they probably want to switch you to the 4g plan, which has an unlimited data option for those grandfathered in.

Is this any better then my current unlimited plan? And are you sure they wouldn't try and swindle me and get rid of my unlimited plan

I had iPhone 3GS before and was grandfathered in. Wife was also grandfathered in. All you should have to do is tell them you do not want to lose your unlimited plan, and want to be grandfathered in and you should be set.
If you are unsure, call an AT&T store and ask them without giving your information. Also, make sure you go into a store to have the changes done. When I bought my phone they automatically put me on the 2GB plan and I spent 2 hours trying to get unlimited back, which I got after a manager authorized it.

with the 4g plan, it allows you to use the phone apn instead of just wap.cingular. using the phone apn, i get speeds of over 7mbps sometimes. using the wap one, i max out at 3.9 where i live. that's the only difference. they activate that apn for you

lol i got on the chat and called and they kept *****ing about LTE =p so i gave up
At&t has me buying a mandatory data plan(3gb) when I use about 300mb a month and that is because I purposely shut off wifi so I dont feel like a jackass for paying for something I do not use...
I have no need at all for data,I am always near a wifi spot,is there a way to make it seem like my smartphone is a dumbphone?
I have a bunch of att branded flip-phones laying around,is there a way to take the imei from of these and put it on the Note i717?
I'm sure if it is possible,it is complicated.Just wondering.
Thanks.

I tried to do something similar.
I called At&t and told them that I wanted to use a flip phone and gave them the IMEI and everything,I used it for a few days and after I put it in an Atrix 2 I have. After 3 days I got a text saying they added a data plan for $20 to my account lol.
They can read the IMEI of the phone,if you call customer service, they can even tell you what sim is in what phone at that very moment.

I don't think that will work. I had that argument with at&t about not needing the data add-on for my sister-in-law's phone. She wanted the large screen for SMS and doesn't know the internet exists. I put an old 64k sim in the phone, and within the day the phone was cut off. After a call to at&t, they told me I need a data plan with the phone. They detect the type of phone.
Don't bring up the topic of phone cloning - its illegal and banned on xda, as it should be.
So it is "phone cloning"?
didnt know, thanks for the heads up.
I can understand making data mandatory on a subsidized phone but on one bought off contract,it is unfair.

Believe me, brother, I'm in 100% agreement with you, but it's at&t's tune we dance to.
I think i am just going to sell this Note i717 and get a Nexus 7 for my tablet needs and pick up a tmobile branded galaxy s or something else cheap.
Pick up a Roger's I717R Note if you want to stay with this phone. ATT can't recognize the phone and won't put you on a data plan.

That doesn't make sense. Sprint phones are CDMA not GSM. Sprint network doesn't use a sim card to register. In other words, no sprint phone on at&t network.

I've been using AT&T prepaid plan for a few years now, the GNote is my third phone with prepaid plan ($50/mo: unlimited calling, text, data{only for non-smart phones}) but I'm cool with that. So I don't see why you can't do the same.

To add to this comment. At&t will also know if you are using any smartphone from any network or assume its a smart phone I guess. My wife uses a galaxy s 4g exclusive to t-mobile for about 4 months now. Last week she was hit with the 3 gig addition as well. They dont even know what type of phone it is. All she did was turn on the data to download an sms and bam a day later she got the the email.

Hey guys, if anybody could provide me with some solid/sure answer to my noobish curiosity, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Okay, I'm currently on a Verizon basic phone (talk & text, no data). Since I like the Note II so much, I might get one off contract, provide if Verizon would give me a miniSIM Card with no data plan on it. I have WIFI at work and at home, so I don't really see the point of paying for $30 Data.
Although I'm due for upgrade in April, I would like save the $30 per month for the next two years.
Anyway, Note II OFF-Contract on Verizon with no data plan? Is that possible? Thanks...

Yup. Welcome to Verizon. I know T-Mobile will let you since they goofed and did it to my on accident. But far as I am still aware at&t, Verizon and sprint all require a data plan on smart phones regardless of how you buy it.

Yes Verizon will require data on a smart phone regardless.
The imei identifies the device on the network.
It is illegal to change it.
Its how they make there money...if it was possible everyone would do it.

You could always just use it as a big media player. Youll get the same functionality as you are expecting to get already sans the phone and texting useage. Ive got a friend that uses an original note for that purpose. Of course his is the korean version so its a no go on the phone side anyway. Of course that would be a very expensive meda player!

Thanks for all the responses from everyone. I guess Verizon Note II is out of the question. Going to go T-Mobile prepaid mid-june.
$30/month for a) 5GB of 4G Data, Unlimited Text, 100 mins. Or b) 1500 whenever minutes or text (no data-- just use WIFI).

Was on the verge of switching to AT&T until Verizon new announcement that they will carry the ONE. My question is for all that are here. What is the average data usage with the One? I have unlimited on 2 lines with Verizon and if something happens to my unlimited I'm leaving.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
The best thing you can do is to look at your prior data use on vzw.com. Some people use a ton of data, some not so much.
I did this when I switched from Verizon to AT&T and found I only average 3gb. Losing unlimited was no big deal after seeing that.
Research your own use and see how it looks. Switching to AT&T actually saved me a bundle.

I just switched from tmobile unlimited found out I rarely go over 2g so I should be good for 3. And I like att plans got 450 anytime minutes with unlimited cell phone to cell phone no matter the carrier and unlimited text. Almost all my calls are to it from a cell phone so I thought that was cool phone bill should be less then 100

For Verizon, to keep your unlimited you will have to purchase your phone at FULL price. Otherwise, to get a contract price you will have to switch to their 4G LTE plans.
As for how much data the phone uses, that really depends on how often you are around WiFi.

Last I heard there are no more Straight Talk Sims using ATT's network.
AT&T is going to be offering their LTE network access via their GoPhone plans. I'm eyeing this:
http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=24397&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=36623&mapcode=mk-att-gophone
I have Straight Talk now on my GNex but I'm going to give Big Blue another go. We'll see...
Straight Talk is garbage data wise. Sure you won't get LTE but you won't get very good 3G either. Wait for AT&T GO with LTE, don't use these MVNOs. They are cheap and crappy for a reason.
