Root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1418659
You can skip the kernel install part, just go up to the point of rooting and installing a custom recovery.
You don't need to be s-off to run wifi tether.
Also, please post Q&A threads in the Q&A section.
Get out of the Dev section.

Ok guys, I am getting super confused on the development side of the forum. There are tons of threads with all kinds of different info.
Hopefully someone can guide me in the right direction here. Here is my situation:
I am currently on the ICS version of CleanRom. I also get that whole mainver error when I try to flash different kernels, etc.
With that being said, what are the exact steps that I need to take to get the OTA? I don't know anything about ADB, so hopefully there is a way to do it without that knowledge.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
there's a thread in the development section that you need to follow concerning mainver. That give step by step. If your rooted you had to become familiar with adb.

That explains it. You're holding it wrong.
Here are the steps:
1. Unlock using HTC dev.
2. Get s-off using wire trick.
3. Flash custom recovery.
4. Flash custom Rom.
Read, Search, Read again, ... Then Ask with Tapatalk 2

Hey guys im looking to get help and a tutorial on how to root the 4g lte on 2.13? I've searched online but still haven't found an answer to my question. So if you are reading this let me know how to root it thanks.
Your only option is to use the htcdev.com method. You cannot get s-off though.

Go to htcdev.com and follow the instructions. It's really easy. And there are plenty of tutorials in the development section - stickies.

I rooted with regaws awesome automatic rooter found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26955832
It worked flawlessly. Not sure if it still works after the update but it's definitely worth a shot.

I don't think it's been updated to work yet.

guys i still dont know what to do help?
You've already been given a couple links with step-by-step guides.
I suggest reading this guide first to help you understand the terminology better: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869377
Then if you have any specific questions please let us know. Saying simply that "you still don't know what to do" after being given a couple of direct links to guides will get you nowhere.

Unlocking your bootloader using HTCDev Unlock will allow you to flash a custom recovery. With a custom recovery, obtaining root is easy (plenty of flashable ZIPs for this). This has nothing to do with your version of HBOOT (or firmware or OTA version).
Read the guide I linked to above and it will answer these questions...

its installed on every rom.. so basiclly im only rooted because of the roms i run.. i quess im good..
I am also on the same page, i have S off, and it says tamepered on my bootloader screen, but I am not able to gain root access...all methods that I have used including Zedomax and Raw method dont seem to work... anyone? I have read through each link provided on here but the all say for software 1.22, and not 2.13... please help
Currently the phone is Hboot 1.5 S-on. Im trying to get it upgraded to ICS. What Ive found is that is should install the stock ics RUU, then reflash recovery, install Super SU, then I would be able to install a custom rom? I dont have much experience with this phone and would appeciate any advice.
I've tried to simplify as much as possible getting from your current configuration to a rooted, and optionally S-OFF, Sprint ICS configuration in this thread. There are several other threads in this Q&A forum and the general forum that might help as well. Just go into advanced search and look for "root" in the titles and you should find them.

Hello everyone, newbie here. I have worked on a few personal phones, however, trying to get my daughter's phone setup. I have read pages and pages of postings on how to do this, but I am a little confused now.Basically, I would like to have root access with recovery mode, which in the process I assume makes phone unlocked? I would like for her to be able to tether through her phone with either built in hot spot or wifi tether app. Not putting any custom mods, just would like modified stock. Can I please get some suggestions on which method to use and correct procedure so I don't jack up her phone. Thanks for any responses. Does it need to be S-off?

Click the DIY guide link in my sig to get you going
S-OFF is not really needed but recommended
Any other questions PM me
Your best bet is to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery on the phone. From there you can actually root the phone either with TWRP recovery or by flashing the superuser binary zip in recovery, which will give you root access. You can then install an app like WiFi tether from the Play store. In addition to BigDaddy's link, check out the link in my sig, also. I explain the difference between bootloader versions, the difference in root & S-off, and have a few different links to help you get your phone rooted, plus some other junk
Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions, or just ask here in the thread.

Thanks for your help, guide was perfect, worked like a charm, actually almost the same as when I did my original Evo 4g. Now for S-off and wifi tether
Thanks again

Appreciate you guys helping out with the information, so much available on this forum, but it gets a tad confusing and overwhelming, you start to doubt that you think you know something
