I read on another site that touchwiz is already hardware accelerated and runs at 60fps. If this is true, are we likely to see any improvements with pb?
Project Butter uses v sync and triple buffering to increase smoothness. My experience with jellybean on the Galaxy nexus is that it hardly makes any difference on a modern high end phone. The hardware acceleration you mention is an ics feature by the way, not unique to this phone.

Does it make any difference to scrolling? That's primarily where I notice a little stuttering/jumpiness.

Seems like jelly bean on the nexus is faster than touchwiz on the S3. Hopefully it'll fly on this then!
Biggest change appears to be in the browser.

I couldn't disagree more! The Jelly Bean update has got me using my Nexus more and more and my S3 sadly seeing less use time. The Nexus is now noticeably smoother and more responsive compared to the S3 or any other phone I've ever used. For perspectives sake I currently have an iPhone 4, a Samsung Focus, Nokia Lumia 900, a Nexus and the S3 to compare directly with at the moment.
It is hard to show in a video or accurately describe in words just how smooth Android is after Jelly Bean and I can't wait for the update on my S3. Google Now, Project Butter and all the other improvements and small refinements of Jelly Bean added to what the S3 already offers is going to be one incredible combination!

I just hope we see the benefits with touchwiz. Seems like a GUI overlay might not see the benefits unless the manufacturer specifically supports it.

first week of april for sure. jelly bean is way to far. its dual OS android 5 plus google it will be interesting to see what jelly bean gota offer. the wait is on
It's the last week in April. Nothing yet...
I just hope they increase the response time of the camera. As-is that is my ONLY complaint. I miss a lot of great shots because of the lag between when I click the button and when it actually takes the shot.

Same here. I was able to reduce it by changing the review time (of the shot) to off. Also, if you have the Amaze camera (MeanRom I know has it) the lag is a little shorter than that. Hopefully ICS can help in that aspect!
Google should fix Gingerbread or other versions and make it smooth and fast like iOS. Not release these updates because all of them uses alot of memory and uses cpu more than other operating systems. Iphone with 1ghz cpu and 512ram is almost the same as S II what is the fastest phone. Af course you have a lot options for Android. Different ROMS, Kernels and other things but Google should work more on system. They should make it smooth, bug free and stable as hell. And they should make one system that runs smooth even on low-end devices. Right now Android is just a big mess, a lot versions but it's getting better from one side but going down from other side. Sorry if my english hurts your eyes.

Umm each iteration works more towards this... Ios is so smooth because it uses hardware acceleration, something that is only just becoming possible with ICS on Android. Sit back and trust that Google might just have common sense too.
I think I've heard something about getting ICS some when in June.

Android can do true multitasking. This no something ios does. They added multitasking in ios 4 I believe but it doesn't compare to how well android does it. Strip out the multitasking and I bet android is a hell of a lot smoother.

I have a SGSII. I can test the Nexus and personally I won't change for it. Ok, the update can be faster, but if you can put CM10 if you want the last version (yes, with some bugs, but they make a excellent job).

Jelly Bean updates by Samsung for SGSII, SGSIII, Note and Note II
Thoughts?
Copied from http://www.sammobile.com/2012/08/06/jelly-bean-updates-by-samsung-for-sgsii-sgsiii-note-and-note-ii/
This weekend we tweeted about Android 4.1 updates for the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note II. Let us explain what Samsung will do and how far they are at the moment.
Galaxy S III The test firmwares for the Galaxy S III are passed and they are working on a public version of the first Jelly Bean updates for the Galaxy S III. The wait is on the public version and the agreement of Google.
Galaxy S II Samsung is still testing Android 4.1 for the Galaxy S II. The first tests are looking fine. Because the Galaxy S II is still selling very well and Samsung will update the Galaxy S II to Android 4.1. If Samsung decides at the last moment not to update the Galaxy S II, all Galaxy S II owners will get a value pack update. But so far there is no reason not to update the Galaxy S II to Android 4.1.
Galaxy Note. For the Galaxy Note it is the same story as for the Galaxy S II. Tests are fine but there is still no official words by Samsung.
Galaxy Note II. The Samsung Galaxy Note II would be showed at IFA 2012. The test software is currently based on Android 4.0. Our insider isn’t sure if Samsung will introduce the Galaxy Note II with Android 4.0 or Android 4.1. If Samsung decides to use Android 4.0 at launch, an update to the Galaxy Note will be available a couple of months after.

performance is outstanding; just little quirks, like camcorder and Youtube, but otherwise, they BLOW AWAY any of the Samsung roms..
Yes but things like the video glitches are because they lack the drivers from Samsung. The devs do great work of course but it's not like Samsung contributes nothing of use.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737889
And not everyone loves roms build off aosp pulled together from other phones releases. I've tried the jellybean roms thus far and they are nice but would be better if they were 100% working. I use camera and YouTube daily. (Boring job) So an official release is better than an early half working rom to me. Some people like the stock look and feel. I myself and happy to hear we will get jellybean love.

For those that find additional functionality out of the S Pen, this would be a bummer. Touchwiz Framework is currently the only way to get the best S Pen apps working on android: S Note, S Memo, the screenshot editor, and the best widgets on android.
The custom work from our devs is superior, but only in different areas. FJmod performs as well as CM9 and CM10 does in most situations, and there are niche areas where they each have issues or strengths (feature support and 3d is inconsistent on CM9, something I hope improves, and functionality and freedom is a bit more nuanced in the stock based ROMs).

I thought butter was part of the coding for JB.
I recently upgraded my brother's Rezound to ICS and was expecting a huge increase in UI navigation frame rate or smoothness. I gave him Vigor360 which is based off the OTA so there aren't any gingerbread crumbs lying around. However, I was a bit confused to see that smoothness really hadn't improved much if at all. On Sense UI it's understandable because I doubt they'd change the core programming to support ICS's graphics acceleration, but even Apex and Nova Launcher were sluggish.
Meanwhile the galaxy nexus soars on ICS. Hardware wise, these phones are somewhat similarly matched; the Rezound carries a more capable GPU while the CPU architecture of the Galaxy Nexus delivers better dual core performance. Both are pushing the same number of pixels too, 1280x720.
So why does the Rezound stutter so much more? You'd think the graphics drivers would be properly updated by HTC or Qualcomm for an official update. My intention is not to bash the Rezound in any way, I am simply seeking information.
Rezound ICS is sense bloated. The nexus has none of that bloat so it of course is much smoother.
yeah it's pretty much sense that bloats it up.
but even the AOSP roms on here are still noticably laggier than the nexus too, but devs are working stuff out for them i think
That and the Rezound was designed with Sense in mind and the software shows it. While the Galaxy NEXUS (key word) is what ICS was designed and optimized to run its absolute best on. It's a Google phone the.software and hardware were designed together. I'm sorry if I took it wrong here but I kinda took offense to the OP on behalf of our devs.

It is not my intention to offend any rezound users, most especially the devs. I know the incredible amount of work they put into the mods and ROMs they provide for free. If I'm slandering anyone, it's HTC and/or Qualcomm. Its because of them the devs have to try and find ways to make things smoother in the first place. I apologize of anyone was offended.
I know this phone was developed with sense in mind and with sense comes a lot of bloat. I considered this to be a reason for the lag, but I still find this unacceptable for such a large company.
I will inform him of the adreno driver update and walk him through how to install them. Thanks for that tidbit of info!

I'm on vigor360 and I have no lag on Sense. I can scroll side to side, pull down the status bar and there is no lag. Maybe its the amount of stuff he's added to the homescreen? I keep mine fairly light.
Also another thing to try if he's using Apex, is to go into settings and change the minimum scrolling time for the homescreen and app drawer from 0 to somewhere between 12-15, that eliminated all the lag for me.

I just downloaded and flashed the drivers from that link; I'm positive I'm now seeing a large increase in the speed of XDA loading and navigating my home screens. After flashing the new drivers would it make sense for me to see a noticeable difference? Or am I imagining it? Also, if I flash a new ROM in the future will I have to flash that zip again? Also, because the phone runs more smoothly, will battery life decrease faster while moving through the phone?

This made a big difference for me in snappiness when switching screens...go figure. Thanks!
A concise explanation is that qualcomms drivers don't accelerate a lot of different types of drawing. There are some newer drivers around the web that add more acceleration. Hopefully jellybean motivates Qualcomm to put full acceleration in like the ti omap 4460 sgx540 in the galaxy nexus and the tegra 3 in the nexus 7 and many other devices. People can hate on nvidia but their android graphics drivers for ICS and jellybean are rock solid. Way smoother in ICS on the transformer prime I played with in the store then my friends epic 4g touch is in cm9 even with the low resolution screen and the exynos. Tegra 3 does amazing on my nexus 7 in jellybean as does the omap 4460 in my nexus. Little to no lag at all.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I think the real simple answer is HTC didn't have ICS in mind with this phone, and therefore didn't put much effort into it. It's more of a, "Look! We follow through with updates! Buy our ****!" thing.
No lag on Nilsp Business Sense 3.6 or Ineffible Deus ROMS for me. Even on stock kernal.
...just sayin....
Samsung devices generally have more muscular graphics. My girlfriend's Samsung Stratosphere, an inferior device by nearly every measure, scores just about even with my Rezound on graphics benchmarks. I'd fully expect a more modern Samsung to show an edge up against the Rezound.

Nope. The hardware of the Nexus 10 is too different from any of Samsung's other tablets for a port to be worth the effort. Why would you want TouchWiz on a tablet anyway? It works okay on phones but the tablet versions are all a laggy unoptimized mess; scrolling on the home screen stutters even with nothing on it.

To be fair, there are a few nice things (Samsung's got some nice floating widgets built in and multi-window is apparently nice, though my Galaxy Tab 10.1 never saw it), and SAmsung was first to realize how nice power controls would be on a mainstream device. But back on topic, wireoid's right: you're not going to see enough interest to justify the enormous amount of work it would take to port a proprietary framework.
