New MAXX - Motorola Droid RAZR

I just got an un-rooted VZ ICS OTA'ed RAZR MAXX. My questions are:
1. Is it pretty easy to root?
2. If I root and install a custom ROM, and after 7 days want to return the phone to VZ, How will I go back to sock? As far a I know no ICS FZX has been leaked for RAZR MAXX yet... right?
All help will be greatly appreciated guys...

Best to just wait till your sure your gonna keep it.
But, if you want to try it out what you want is Matt's DroidRazrUtility 1.7, it has what you need to root and SAFESTRAP, which from my understanding allows you to keep your stock system on the "unsafe" side and load a second ROM on the "safe" side, I've not used it myself and there seams to be few guides for TOTAL newbs to safestrap.

Restore back to stock

I havent used my droid Eris in a while because I got a droid incredible. I need to sell my eris because of the rough economy. Im running kaos froyo and CWM recovery. What steps should I follow to bring my phone back to total stock? Im unfamiliar with the restore process of the droid eris. Is their a PBM1img.zip file that i can flash? I would like it to have the latest (Rom)software available for it from HTC.
I very unfamiliar with the stuff for the eris so if their is a back to stock thread i can follow please let me know.

Just flash the flashback 1.5 Rom. It will take you back to stock 1.5 and stock recovery. Only exception is your bootloader will remain at s-off and there is no way to change that

Or just send me your DI.
Search the Eris Android develpment thread for Flashback 21 look for the threat with restore to factory stock in the title and follow the instructions in this thread and you should be good to go. The eris will not ota to 2.1 anymore. If you want 1.5 the instructions are there for that one as well.

Nexus to Razr maxx

I'm going to be trading my nexus for a razr maxx. What should I look out for to make sure that this device is STOCK and is on the OTA path? Any other spots or defects I should know about before taking the plunge and avoid a lemon?
Not sure I understand your concerns, but if it's a brand new device out of the box you will be just fine.

Well I'm trading with a guy off Craigslist and I want to make sure he didn't screw up rooting / unlocking it and that's why he's trading it
Even if he did screw up something, the fastboot files are available to return to the current stock version. Also, the current stock version can be rooted.
So no matter what boot loader or radio a razr is on it can be returned to factory stock and on the OTA route?
Is the stock razr build on 2.3.5 or 2.3.6?
Sorry for the paranoia but my friend has a bionic and he's had problems with the whole rooting thing

The maxx is fantastic. You can just RSD it to. 173. You can install the ics leak if you would like and still be able to RSD it back to. 173 when a better ota drops.
Extremely easy to root. Cwm isn't really necessary for you to have a great phone. Even stock is nice
Well thank you all for the great info, Are there any other things I should
Look at before trading? Going back to GB is going to be a bummer but I need a phone to last me all day, damnit!
Just look forward to having amazing battery life! I actually did the exact same switch you did and haven't looked back. I installed an ICS rom though and it runs smooth as butter.

I think I avg 6 + hours screen on time and usually charge every 18 ish hours. You won't be dissatisfied. I may not have all the apps some people do but I use the crap out of my phone. The maxx is everything you heard and more. I'm getting these times on the ics leak.
So far I'm loving the battery life, however my device is on 173 and not 181, and the update button says I'm on the latest version... any way to force the update or should I stay patient?

You're on the latest version. .181 has not been pushed out yet. I'm actually a part of the soak group, but have not gotten the OTA.

I forgot to say that I am on the ics leak and am getting the ridiculous battery life I was posting. If you can't wait flash the leak. Can always rsd back and be on the path once the latest ics drops. So far so good here. Just have to do the basic maintenance apps and only freeze apps unless you really decide they are in your way. If your rooted and on .173 just freeze them. If an update become available make sure you don't have a recovery installed, while the update is downloading get ota root keeper if you don't already have it, temp unroot and unfreeze all those apps. Then accept the update. Restore root w ota root keeper and your good to go
Not to detract from XDA but a whole crap load of dev work is going on over at droidrzr.com and droidhive.com.
The razr at this time has some of the best dev's in the business. I'd stay on 173 stock and either install the ICS leak w/ DroidTh3ory's ICS leak mod and ICS leak bootstrap or stay on 173, root, install hashcode's safestrap and run Dhacker's Axiom ICS ROM or Kejar's Gummy rom.

ETA: I read that reply wrong. My apologies, but none the less read what I wrote below this if you want to install the ICS leak. Sorry about that.
To properly install the ICS leak you can't temp unroot. OP, just go over to the droidrzr site and go to this thread.....
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/1562-ics-anyone-i-haz-it-4-yew/

which ics build is the best?

really wanting to make the change, was on first leak two weeks. Is there a build that you can razr utility back? is there a build that flashes over. 181 WITHOUT wiping data and cache? is there a build that includes all video codecs missing from first leak? is there a build that does all 3 things above? Four day weekend for me and I'm considering putting ics back on my razr.
droid razr stock un- rooted .181 waiting for official ics...
I have been running the .206 leak for a while now and it runs perfect.

The latest builds cannot easily be backed up to .181, and we have no idea what their impact on the ability to accept OTA updates will be even after backing up to .181.
I would suggest on of the leaks that you can at least rsd back to stock if you run into problems. this goes to if you decide to use one that does not go back to stock http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/t...m-icsbut-not-back-to-gb-6148485-616203204206/
and this one can be fastbooted back to stock. http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/t...s-61479-its-fastbootable-back-to-gingerbread/
your choice.

You can still use the option 3 for Ice Cream Sandwich root. Thats what he told me to use and it worked perfect.

[Q] New to MAXX - A Few Root/Recovery Questions

I'm just coming over to a VZW Maxx from an LG Revolution. On the REVO we had one or two devs doing great work and when it came to root/recovery, there was one AIO that did it all: root/unroot/CWM/revert to stock recovery, etc. Here with such a large community, all the support, and CDMA vs.GSM phones, I'm a little intimidated (and excited) by all of the dev work available for this phone.
I'm interested in rooting and installing recovery. I'll probably stay on GB and wait for the official OTA before going to ICS. One or two quick questions about root/recovery for the Maxx:
I think I should be using using zedomax's tool discussed here to root (root should be easy enough):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342567
For recovery, I think I ought to be using Safestrap 1.09 for now and 2.0 after the ICS OTA, yes? My guess is if I install Safestrap now, I'll have to uninstall it in order to receive the ICS OTA. If yes, it looks like I could uninstall it right from within the app itself. Is that correct?
Any opinion by some of you seasoned RAZR owners on the best recovery tool: Safestrap, bootstrap, CWM, etc? Thanks!
I did the exact swap last week. To root I used the razr utility vs 1.6. Search xda for "Razr utility", follow the link in the last page to the other forum for the updated version.
Took maybe 5 minutes to root and install voodoo ota rootkeeper. Waiting for ota ics before installing recovery.
Sorry for no links, out and about.
I rooted with razr utility 1.6 then installed ics leak .79. Can I install the voodoo ota rootkeeper now?
Thanks.

[Q] Unlock Razr Maxx Bootloader

Is it possible and if so how do you unlock the bootloader on Razr Maxx?
I mostly want to back my device up before doing anything to it.
Bootloader can't be unlocked.
The safest bet would be to root it then install safestrap.
From safestrap you can install any ics rom you want without it disturbing the stock side.

JB Update
Ok thank you...What I am really wanting to do is update to the Jelly Bean update that was pushed out then killed but I fear having the issues some people have had with it.
In that case I would recommend following spc_hicks09 guide in the development section for the leaked jellybean upgrade.
Make sure you read it very thoroughly and follow instructions to the t.
I used his guide with no problems at all.
I didn't lose any off my pictures or stuff like that but I would highly recommend backing up all of your data.
