[Q] Unlock Razr Maxx Bootloader - Motorola Droid RAZR

Is it possible and if so how do you unlock the bootloader on Razr Maxx?
I mostly want to back my device up before doing anything to it.

Bootloader can't be unlocked.
The safest bet would be to root it then install safestrap.
From safestrap you can install any ics rom you want without it disturbing the stock side.

JB Update
Ok thank you...What I am really wanting to do is update to the Jelly Bean update that was pushed out then killed but I fear having the issues some people have had with it.

In that case I would recommend following spc_hicks09 guide in the development section for the leaked jellybean upgrade.
Make sure you read it very thoroughly and follow instructions to the t.
I used his guide with no problems at all.
I didn't lose any off my pictures or stuff like that but I would highly recommend backing up all of your data.

Rom for the droid razr

I dont get why we cant have custom roms for the droid razr because, the bionic, the droid 3, droid x, and droid 2 have custom rom even though the bootloader is still locked

Okay its because there isnt a SBF yet for the device. Once that is leaked and ready to go there wont be much roms. Also the devs need a razr to play with and most devs dont have it yet. In time you will have roms.
What do u mean by sbf?

SBF = System Binary File.
It is a binary image of the stock (unmodified) Droid Razr OS, that can be pushed to the phone through a program like RSDLite. The purpose of this SBF is to be able to restore a phone to factory condition, if something goes wrong.
So, devs need:
* The SBF file, as a baseline and recovery tool
* An unlocked bootloader, so that they can load ROMs onto the phone
* The source code for an Android OS, so they can modify it and actually create the ROM.
So far, I think they only have #3. Items #1 and #2 will come over time.
Misleading title. I thought OP already DEVELOP droid razr rom

An unlocked bootloader is nice, but not absolutely necessary, there are plenty of phones with locked bootloaders and custom roms.

Agreed. you dont need a unlocked bootloader. Only if you want custom kernels.
hi thanks for your information
We're in a bit of a tough spot right now. We want to mod and play but without a SBF to save us were not going all out and just doing little things. However doing those little things may stop the OTA update if it's recognized that we are messing with our system files. Then we would need an SBF to go back to stock to get the OTA which we may or may not have. So then we will have to rely on a ROM that will work on our version of RAZR. At least with one official SBF for our own RAZR version we can always start at the beginning. I'm trying to keep my mods to a minimum so the OTA doesn't get broke but may be beyond that already, who knows.
Nitro said he had a ROM booting and that he'd post it on DroidRZR today, so.

[Q] New to MAXX - A Few Root/Recovery Questions

I'm just coming over to a VZW Maxx from an LG Revolution. On the REVO we had one or two devs doing great work and when it came to root/recovery, there was one AIO that did it all: root/unroot/CWM/revert to stock recovery, etc. Here with such a large community, all the support, and CDMA vs.GSM phones, I'm a little intimidated (and excited) by all of the dev work available for this phone.
I'm interested in rooting and installing recovery. I'll probably stay on GB and wait for the official OTA before going to ICS. One or two quick questions about root/recovery for the Maxx:
I think I should be using using zedomax's tool discussed here to root (root should be easy enough):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342567
For recovery, I think I ought to be using Safestrap 1.09 for now and 2.0 after the ICS OTA, yes? My guess is if I install Safestrap now, I'll have to uninstall it in order to receive the ICS OTA. If yes, it looks like I could uninstall it right from within the app itself. Is that correct?
Any opinion by some of you seasoned RAZR owners on the best recovery tool: Safestrap, bootstrap, CWM, etc? Thanks!
I did the exact swap last week. To root I used the razr utility vs 1.6. Search xda for "Razr utility", follow the link in the last page to the other forum for the updated version.
Took maybe 5 minutes to root and install voodoo ota rootkeeper. Waiting for ota ics before installing recovery.
Sorry for no links, out and about.
I rooted with razr utility 1.6 then installed ics leak .79. Can I install the voodoo ota rootkeeper now?
Thanks.

New MAXX

I just got an un-rooted VZ ICS OTA'ed RAZR MAXX. My questions are:
1. Is it pretty easy to root?
2. If I root and install a custom ROM, and after 7 days want to return the phone to VZ, How will I go back to sock? As far a I know no ICS FZX has been leaked for RAZR MAXX yet... right?
All help will be greatly appreciated guys...

Best to just wait till your sure your gonna keep it.
But, if you want to try it out what you want is Matt's DroidRazrUtility 1.7, it has what you need to root and SAFESTRAP, which from my understanding allows you to keep your stock system on the "unsafe" side and load a second ROM on the "safe" side, I've not used it myself and there seams to be few guides for TOTAL newbs to safestrap.

[q] xt926 root 4.1.2 [noob friendly]

Hey guys,
I have a Droid Razr Maxx HD xt926, running JB 4.1.2, and with the latest ota update. Is there any way to root besides motochopper? When I run motochopper, I get superuser, but it says the root fails.
Thank you
In hindsight...

I would love to know the answer for this as well. I have read 100's of different threads on this and I've yet to find any success stories after the latest OTA. Verizon sent me the Droid Razr Maxx HD xt926 yesterday as a replacement device to my Razr XT912 which was running the latest CM 10.2...
I guess I really should have done some research before accepting their offer UGHHH....PLEASE someone tell me if I can at least ROOT the phone, even w/o the BL?

Root XT910 on 4.1.2?? cant unlock bootloader btw

I am a huuuge noob and Just started this rooting flashing gig. I have a Motorola Droid Razr XT910 on Rogers and I would really like a simple way to root it OR flash custom recovery so I can flash KIt Kat rom. I tried to folllow the virtual box method but got way to confused since Im brand new to this. Is there ANYONE that knows of anyway a simpleton like me could go abouts getting root or recovery for my razr? I've also been unsuccessful at trying to unlock my bootloader
thanks in advance
You cannot unlock the bootloader. That is out of question.
To root, look in the dev section, you'll find the thread to root xt910.
As for recovery, you will need safestrap for kitkat ROMs. It is also in the dev section. Along with installation instructions.
Just make sure you use the 'umts_spyder' one.

Hey have you rooted your spyder??in which version jb4.1.2??
