I got my SGS3 from T-Mobile (UK) and there is no option to check for an update. Why is this?

Orange and t mobile have decided to remove it with there bloatware on some released models. mine is the same on Orange , you can update through kies when Samsung release an update , this will be 10x faster that waiting for t mobilel/orange to release ota updates which this option is used for .

Finally I have found others with the same issue.
I have recently switched to T mobile UK mainly for the unlimited data and the lack of it on o2. I have got 2 galaxy s3's one is for my girlfriend. Both of which are missing the update option in about phone. I noticed this straight away and contacted t mobile. The first 2 calls went nowhere and was told Samsung don't do OTA updates and it's only via kies, the 1st call I was told I need kies air! I knew the ota part was not true and on my third call I got through to someone that cared. But had not heard of this issue, I have given them my build number and csc etc and they are speaking to relative departments in t mobile and Samsung, I mentioned it had to be t mobile that have disabled ethos option and that other t mobile users have this option and have had the small update. Via kies it says it's up to date on le4 firmware. T mobile have extended my dsr period until they get to the bottom of the issue, but I am concerned as it's been 2 weeks now with no real progress and I have not even taken the phone out of the house or transferred my old number encased of returning or replacing the handsets.
I see not having the ota update option as quite a big disadvantage, especially with how unstable kies seems to be.
Please could you with and without the option let me know if your phone was from t mobile or 3rd party and wether it was through a store or the website as they have asked me this and should help me sort this out.
Thanks in advance

I believe it was a case of getting units out to the public some got missed. I'm on orange and don't have the option but others on orange do.
I was a annoyed about this at first but after a searching and reading I'm actually not bothered.
The reason is when Samsung release and update it will be available straight away through kies ( I've not had any issues with kies) , waiting for the networks to get that updated then playing about with it and adding bloatware and taking out things will a) take forever and b) be ruined, from experience orange are the worst at this and as they are all one company now t mobile will be no better.
IMHO.

Hi Motogp1,
I get what you are saying but surely even if we had this option it would still also be possible to update via kies.
Have you already had an update? As I have not and although it's a small update , it is reported to free up some ram and on my last phone it massively cut down battery usage.
With regards to kies, I had to install and uninstall it 5 times before it finally worked and now it works (kind of) but I get a "server busy" error message every time I start my pc. I checked in task manager and it was kies causing it.
It just does not sit right with me, as you are effectively paying full price for the phone over the contract. If I had £500 I would have got the phone swim free and gone sim only with t mobile.
Never had any of them problems with kies and I connect without fail every time. My point Is the update from T mobile will be a long way behind kies and full of there bloatware.
It doesn't really bother me as I'd prefer to go through kies than orange/t mobile.
I think it's personal choice, plenty of people have returned there phone and got another one for this reason so if if really not happy send it back.

ok so i bought the UK version of the Galaxy S3...i was told by many since AT&T can't recognize the uk version of the phone, i can sign up for the 10/month unlimited data plan...so i called them yesterday and gave them my dummy phones ime number...everything was good all day phone worked great..but i just got home and i got an email saying that my "iphone" doesn't have the proper data package and changed it to the 30 month/3 gig plan...so i'm confused...did they know i was using a smart phone??
maybe i screwed up not giving them the galaxy s3's ime number?
Doesn't matter what country it's from they can still enter your ImeI and know what you using.
Lets hope AT&T doesn't do as they did with the N1 and go after the medianet users.
You are SOL, it appears in this case your phone IMEI algorithm is in the ATT IMEI sweeps. They have the UK SGS III flagged as an iPhone just as they had the white Galaxy Note flagged as a blackberry.
this is a hit or miss thing. Best thing to do is give them an imei of a dumb phone from AT&T. Been running with that on my GNote.

Yeah that's what I did do. I never gave them the s3's imei number. Gave them the imie of and old Samsung I had.

IMEI ranges are openly available and AT&T has the capability to scan for devices that fall within and then compare those to the data plan. The only thing that has stopped them from doing this wholesale is that it requires a great deal of resources and they have chosen to stick with the money. Otherwise there would not be anyone doing the medianet gambit without an IMEI spoof. The situation with the N1 was different in that they publicly stated they were going after Google and did so, it was a shot across their bow saying do not screw with our subbed phone system by getting into the business of selling unlocked phones to our customers. If they have decided to take this course with the sgs3 you will know soon enough as there will be many reporting that they were kicked to smartphone data but it would not be business as usual up to this time.
The other way that people get caught is that they are flagged at the time of making the switch by the csr and it sounds like this might be what happened here since this is the only report of it so far.

I have an Orange UK i9300, and I too don't have the upgrade option. I did plug in to Kies yesterday and got an update though. Had to root again after, but no big deal.
I don't really understand what your problem is with it not being there, you're on XDA forums! Why don't you just flash an unbranded stock ROM on to it if you're really that bothered?

Just install CWM and do a nandroid backup of your current ROM, then flash any ROM you like (stock or not).
Then if you ever need to call on warranty you can restore your backup and use Triangle Away to get the flash counter down to 0.
Regarding OTA updates, they would be Orange branded anyway if the upgrade option was there, so you'd be back to square one. If you had an unbranded ROM, you would get Samsung updates.
Thanks for that , yes i understand i can do all that , my point is why has it been removed on some orange phones and not others , it should of been left on there in the first place so i have a choice of using either ota or kies even the orange technician totally agreed with me, no other network has done this .
:good:
Maybe Orange wanted to prevent everyone from downloading a ~100MB per phone update through their network.
However in that case they should at least send an Sms and tell customers that they could get a free firmware upgrada at any Orange shop...
Flashing an original Rom will not increase the flash counter since it's Samsung-signed.
The part about voiding warranty is rater complicated. Manufacturers want you to believe that the warranty is void when flashing custom stuff, but they also want to make you believe that opening a computer's case voids the warranty.
Usually that is even true, but note that there is a difference between the optional warranty the manufacturers offer at their own terms and the warranty as required by law which has completely different terms in each country.

so was you successful in getting your s3 exchanged from orange. I will be flashing an unbranded rom but i want to back up the useless orange rom just incase i have to ever send it back. Just cant figure out how to back up the orange rom at the moment.
Before I start I should probably say straight away that I have scoured the forums for this and haven't found anything enlightening, though I have seen a few people have the same problem.
Anyway, I have a GS3 and I'm on t-mobile (UK). I noticed that my phone doesn't have an option to "check for updates" under settings > about phone as others do, which is odd, but other posts from people have informed me that some t-mobile (and orange too?) locked handsets have had this option removed for whatever reason. So this is a bit annoying, but I'm over it.
The problem is that I want to update to the latest firmware (XXBLFB or something) and the absence of this button means I can't check for updates. So I plug my phone into Kies, and Kies doesn't think there's an update available either. So I'm just wondering whether anyone else on t-mobile has received the update at all - via kies or via OTA?
I realise that xda isn't the best place to ask this as most people on this forum will just flash the latest firmware using odin, but I'm not prepared to do that at the moment!
I dont think all carriers release new updates at the same time.
So its just a waiting game. Unless u step up to kies big brother odin

Did you get the phone from a T Mobile store, or CPW, or Phones4U? If it's T Mobile, they can be a bit slow. CPW and P4U are generally open fw as the phones are unlocked.
oops should have read all of it sorry.
I'm on T mobile but my phone's unlocked (CPW).
Have you tried connecting it to Kies? Does it say anything about firmware?
Why don't you just flash the United kingdom unbranded version of xxblfb(BTU). I'm with t-mobile and that's what i did. The advantage is it doesn't come with all the bloatware and you'll probably have a better chance of getting the latest updates quicker via kies.

Yeah, when I connect to Kies it says I have the latest firmware, so I'm assuming that t-mobile just haven't decided to roll their version of the firmware out yet. It just seemed strange to me since other networks seem to have got the update quite a while ago and it's not even that big an update - with the jump from gingerbread to ICS on the galaxy S2, the gap was only a couple of weeks between networks.

Yeah I am considering it, but to be honest odin scares me a bit! Does the t-mobile version have much in the way of bloatware? I was pleasantly surprised, apart from being locked to t-mobile I couldn't find a single bit of t-mobile branding, not even the startup screen!
I'm also worried that if I flash to an unbranded version then should something go wrong with the phone and I need to replace it, I won't be able to get the t-mobile branded firmware back which might cause warranty issues?

Personally I think Odin is safer than kies but I'm only saying that because I've had a couple of problems with botched upgrades via kies and I feel Odin is more secure. Sorry.. just remembered I bought my phone SIM free as I wasn't due an upgrade from t-mobile for another year but from what I recall with the s2 it came with a load of bloatware. I got the before mentioned firmware update via kies about a week after the phone arriving which was relatively quick considering some other networks still haven't released their version. You could always download the t-mobile firmware from Sam mobile and keep it as a back up but really it's entirely up to you as I wouldn't want to be responsible for jeopardizing your warranty mate.

Help appreciated... I've searched and found some similar threads but nothing that quite covers this. Here's the story:
Mid 2012: bought new Note from ATT in New York. Never had an ATT SIM in it.
Took it home, bought a SIM unlock. Installed Seraphim Mesosphere, CWM recovery, Blaze modem. Worked perfectly on tmob SIM for the next few months.
October 2012: Moved to New Zealand. Removed tmob SIM. Installed NZ Telecom contract SIM. Worked perfectly for the next four months.
February 2013: one day I lost network connection. Rebooted. 'No SIM'. Aaaaargh!
Tried everything I can think of. SIM works fine in other phones. SIMs known to work in other phones don't work in the Note.
Done numerous factory resets, wipes of caches.
Reinstalled Blaze & Seraphim. Tried other ROMs. Tried other modems.
Fired up Odin and blew it all back to stock AT&T.
Reinstalled Blaze, CWM, Seraphim etc.
*nothing works*
Since the day it failed it's never once hinted at recognising the SIM or talking to the network.
Is there *anything* else I could try before I blame the hardware and try getting the SIM module replaced?
Thanks
Mike

Nope, since the day it suddenly stopped working nothing worked - including stock att. Prior to that it was 100% reliable. Something catastrophic seems to have happened.

Advice on "No SIM"
Mike,
Have you considered using the KIES tools menu to do a full firmware upgrade and initalization? That will wipe all your data and previous software changes and give you a pristine AT&T loadout. All you need is your model number and the serial number found beneath the battery. As a precaution, check that you have the latest version of KIES, and use only an OEM USB cable.
Check back and let us know if that worked.

Well I'm struggling with KIES.
I'm referring to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731654
Which says:
2) Launch Kies on your desktop (full version)
4) Choose Tools, Firmware upgrade & initialization
a) While in download mode, pull battery and enter the S/N & model name (ALL CAPS!!)
My KIES (the latest version, 2.0.0.13023_0 for OSX) has the following in Tools menu:
Emergency Firmware Recovery
Firmware Upgrade Settings
Install Driver
Yes I installed driver
Going to Emergency Firmware Recovery produces an empty list (and a button offer recovery with a recovery code, which I don't have); the KIES 'connected devices' list shows 'connecting...'
No place to enter S/N & model.
Yes I've rebooted, put phone in and out of download mode etc., and used a couple of different cables, both of which work fine with Odin.
Help?

I think there might be an issue with the SIM holder on at least certain of these phones. I recently swapped my original Note because the power button got stuck. The first replacement (through ATT Warranty exchange) had issues unrelated to the SIM. However, the next replacement (two days later) had a SIM issue and the next replacement I got (last Friday) also had SIM issues. I replaced the SIM at an ATT Store on Saturday and still had issues and the people in the store told me that it was not the SIM card, but a hardware issue, but still gave me a new SIM. Last night, Warranty Exchange agreed to send me my 4th Note replacement in less than two weeks. Hopefully this one will not have any problems.

Okay, I got a good one for you guys and I'm hoping someone can give me an idea I haven't thought of yet. Here's the scenario:
I owned a Rogers Samsung Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925W8) that I passed down to my best friend when I bought a Pixel XL last fall. While it was still my daily driver, I had gotten tired of waiting for Rogers to push the Marshmallow OTA to their customers while other carriers had already sent it out so I went on over to SamMobile and downloaded the 6.0.1 firmware from Eastlink, installed it on my device using Odin and went on to enjoy my life with the latest version of Android.
Flash forward a little more than a year and my friend is still using the S6 edge as his daily driver but a couple months ago, the USB port stopped working. Not the end of the world at the time as I had given him my wireless charger with the phone and that still works just fine. When Rogers released the Nougat update for the S6 edge, my buddy mentioned that he hadn't gotten it yet but I thought it would just be a matter of time until he got the notification that it was ready to download.
Towards the end of August, news broke that certain Samsung devices on the Rogers network would no longer be able to call 911 due to network enhancements that they were planning in the fall https://mobilesyrup.com/2017/08/30/android-6-x-lower-samsung-devices-911-calls-rogers/ Okay, no big deal we're thinking except Rogers has sent out a text message in the past week stating that any affected devices not updated by October 26, 2017 will have LTE network access removed to ensure that they can still access 911 services. Okay, so let's load up that OTA update already right? Well it just dawned on me today that since I had loaded the Eastlink firmware, that's why he's not seeing the OTA update from Rogers.
So now we gotta figure out how we're going to address this problem. He's going to take it to a repair shop in the morning to see how much it is to fix the USB port so that we can update it using Odin but he's obviously not looking to spend too much to repair a 2.5 year old phone. In the worst case scenario that the USB port cannot be repaired, what I want to know is what are my options? Will changing the CSC of the device back to Rogers result in the OTA update appearing for the device (despite the obvious downside of the device having to be factory reset and not being able to do a full, proper backup because no USB port)? Does anyone know if the Rogers (or Eastlink) OTA zip file is available to download like with Nexus/Pixel devices? (I'm doubtful but have to ask. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for reading my lengthy post and thanks in advance for any help that you can provide

I'm almost certain the only way to flash any firmware to s6 edge or any Samsung device is through Odin. So usb port will be needed.
You can download the firmware but not as a zip to install OTA.
Another thing is you need root to change the CSC. Again which needs usb port so you can flash twrp on to it.
You can pick up usb ports pretty cheap nowadays so maybe just be best to repair it and flash it through Odin.
