[Q] Thinking about getting a SGSII. I have a few questions. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently own a Sony Xperia Ray, I like it but after getting very disappointed with the ICS update this phone got, I have been thinking of replacing it, and now I have the chance to do it because my father needs a smartphone for work, and I can just give him my Ray and buy a new one for me.
Anyway, since it's quite an old phone, I was wondering if it's still worth it. I had the chance to try it a few days ago from a friend of mine, his SGSII had some AOKP rom installed and it seemed very fast and bug-free. I did not like the screen very much, since I'm used to the sharp screen Ray has, the screen seemed a bit more pixelated, and also I noticed a blueish tint on white backgrounds.
Anyway, here are my questions:
Which one is the latest official firmware available for it? I heard it's 4.0.4 but I'm not sure. After the giant disappointment I got with Sony, I'd be happier to know it has at least the latest version of ICS right now. I have a thing against homebrew roms and would avoid them if possible, no offence intended to all the talented developers of XDA. I like to keep the stock firmware and just add mods and tweaks to it.
Also, how do you like the stock interface available for it in the latest official firmware? Do you think it's very obsolete or flawed? How does it compare to the one on the SIII?
Do you think there is anything that pushes the SGSII to it's limits and makes you think it's not powerful enough? I often get this feeling on my Ray, especially in the browser and some games. I kind of like some Gameloft games for Android but they don't run as well as I'd like them to on my Ray.
Do you think the low resolution of the screen is a big limitation? Do movies look good on it? I am a bit underwhelmed by the screen on the SGSII, especially after trying the Xperia S, which has an utterly amazing screen.
I assume it's safe to say that Sammy won't update it to Jelly Bean, right?
That's all I guess. Feel free to recommend me another phone if you think the SII is not worth it in 2012. I can't spend much more than what the SII costs though (around 380€ new here).

first off
this is not the questions section but i will be kind and anwser it before a mod removes it
hardware is good rocking a 1.5 dual core wich is faster then stock sgs2 (wich i also own)
sony's UI is not bad still has some left overs from official ics look but overall it has a good appeal
no phone does not lag even when i have serious multitasking going on never had issues not even on ICS
root does not mean the phone is faster
hope this anwsers your questions
feel free to pm me
COME AT ME MODS
I dunno. I like the XS way more than the SGS2, mostly for design and camera reasons. Sony's UI is not horrible like TouchWiz, though I still prefer AOSP since it looks lighter. There's a bit of a problem with custom ROMs now, but we're quite close to getting a temporary hack while Bin4ry works out a better solution.

should i buy this phone ? !!

hello guys , right now i'm a htc wildfire s owner and i'm looking to replace it with a new android device ( better hardware ) and iam very confused between 2 devices the Motorola Atrix 4g and the Sony Xperia Sola but i kinda like the Atrix because of this huge forum there is alot of Roms and stuff but i wanted u Atrix owners to help me explain some points
- i read here on xda that all the new Atrix devices well not be unlocked link here sooo is that true ?
- if i bought this device i think i'll unlock it after a couple weeks and if i wanted to know what isn't exactly working in the CM9 rom cuz it's my favorite and does toggling bluetooth and wifi force restart the device ( ohhh god i sufferd this issue with my wfs ) and does the HDMI port work with ICS based roms ? !!
- is there a webtop for ics roms ?
- in worst cases is CM7 fully working ? !! ( stable ) cuz i can't imagine my self stuck with the orginal rom
that's it for now, thank u guys in advance hope to to join u soon
The Sola and Atrix are both damn good phones, The Sola looks nice, has a good(similar to i9100)chipset, better camera, better screen and the Atrix has more functionality (TegraZone, webtop, docks, 1gb ram etc)
The Atrix also has a lot more development going on at the moment, compared to the Sola and the latest CM7.2 build runs perfectly on the Atrix.
But it's up to you.
Edit( whether it is "un-lockable" depends on where you buy it from, yes the newer ones aren't, but they still have the initial batches floating around)

well thank's to you mate , but are u sure the sola has a better screen compared to the atrix ( the atrix has a higher ppi and res !! ) and u said it's wether unlockable or not depeinding on where i buy i don't relly get what u mean but i'll be buying it from egypt and not from a specific carrier soo it's not locked for a certain carrier and can u please provide me with any information about what's not working in the cm9 build and most important the HDMI out ....

Resolution of the screen is really nice but for me personally a little too high for a 4" screen.
But the main problem is the colours it produces. Blacks aren't completely black they have a slight brownish greyish look to them. The other colours in general look washed out. Doesn't bother me too much but when comparing to other phones the difference in colours is instantly noticeable.
The atrix hardware is nice. Will run anything you throw at it. We have a very nice stable cm7.2 rom
If I were you I would wait a little while longer to see if Motorola release official ICS for the atrix before buying one unless you don't mind sticking with gingerbread.

Atrix is a very solid phone, and I would take it over the Sola.
You have GB/CM7 for now, and CM7 is very stable. ICS coming sometime in QTR 3...

Well the screen is also smaller on the sola, and it has a full set of sub pixels as well as the bravia engine.
The Atrix has a pentile matrix, so even though there is more pixel density, the pentile matrix makes individual pixels more visible.
Well since you're buying in egypt, there probably is a chance your local store has the initial-release stock of the atrix. But there is no garuntee, I bought a second atrix (for a friend), here in New Zealand a few weeks ago and it was unlockable,
I personally haven't tried ICS or JB because im more interested in a working phone (LOL), I don't like having to toy around with things that only work half the time and/or not at all, thats why I try to stay away from the roms until they're stable.....But still, support the developers for their hard work, even if you aren't using their roms just yet (they all look promising).
there are a lot of things not working in the CM9/CM10 roms, that even the devs can't list them all, and a lot of functionality is software-based because there is no driver support for hardware until next month or so, when we get the official ICS from Moto.
The phone works great on CM7 if you're willing to buy it now.
Prefer to buy Galaxy Nexus, S2, Notes, etc... for most update ROM is already there.
if my Atirx will be broken, I Will buy another Atrix. This is one of the greates devices, fingerprint lock, webtop, and many more Especialy Tegra2 and 1GB RAM

okay your totally right the Galaxy nexus is a great phone but comparing the prices here where is live the atrix sells for 2000 EGP and the nexus for 3500 EGP so there is a huge difference that i can't afford right now and there is also a thing that i don't like about all the nexuses ( except the nexus one ) which is there is no SD Card ..... i can't really imagine my life without an SD Card
I'm considering the same 2 phones. Which phone did you buy, the Xperia Sola or the Atrix?
Atrix
the Atrix is still one of the best phones I have ever owned, and the accessories are great and probably much cheaper now
Like people have said before, cm7 works perfectly. But there is not gonna be any ics for this phone from motorola. The devs are working on jellybean right now. Epinter's cm10 is pretty much a daily driver with hw acceleration issues because of no drivers for kernel. Apart from that its a great rom.

Problem is that there will never be any official ICS from Motorola, and unless the Olympus ICS/JB kernel port is successful, it's likely there will never be any third party HW acceleration either. And yes, there is talk of Motorola releasing the code for the unfinished ICS kernel, but talk is one thing, but I wouldn't bet the farm on seeing it happen any more than I'd bet on a dead horse winning the Kentucky Derby.
Sure the device itself isn't bad, but the only support you will get for the device is dependent on a dwindling community. Honestly, if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have just gotten something different, I would have ran away from the thing screaming like a little girl.

[Q] Xperia s or?

Hello world =D
am getting a new phone after 14 days from this day,am about to get xperia s, my main concern is to beat galaxy s2
and have a free lagy phone that i can brwose and facebooking smothly very...as i had bad exp with wildfire s its no longer can do any operations...
and about the camera did they fix this focus thing in ics?and the incall volum heared its sux..
am little worried about that not getting jelly bean or the price will go down hard once new phones are released so am very worried should i w8 or what?
thx =)
The phone is still one of Sony's flagships and hasnt been out many months even. It wont be left behind like that i dont think. Jellybean may be a while off however, you could probably get it from custom roms earlier as im sure this phone has a lot of dev support.
The phone is awesome, and will be enough for Browsing and Facebook. Buy it and you will do it in style.
For the camera, I don't have this issue, I think, so I can't say nothing.
Regarding Jelly Bean, it should get it around November, so don't worry about it.
To the other gut who commented: We don't have a high quantity of devs here, but those we have are really good.

Well, this day should come soon or later.
I had a chance for trading my Xperia Ray for a phone with similar specifications, and I did.
I own now a LG Optimus Black (white version). If you guys check the specs of both phones you'll note that they're very similar, with only few differences. I miss the great quality of the camera, Optimus camera is crappy. But what I like most of this phone is the bigger screen and the unlocked bootloader, thanks to it I could install and taste (at last) Jelly Bean. Everything is working in a CM10 based ROM, the performance is very good, but the battery drain is a little bit faster than ICS, I guess this is caused by project butter.
That's why I don't understand why SONY won't give JB to our 2011 Xperias. I just can't believe that custom ROMs built by the community and devs are so good enough to use them daily, but SONY engineers can't (or don't want) to give Android 4.1 to Arc, Neo, Ray, etc. That has disappointed me a lot and it was one of the reasons to take the decision of trading my phone.
However, I still want to give a chance to SONY because, after all, I'm a fan and I love their devices (if you ask me, what I really like of this LG I own now is the unlocked bootloader and the screen, the physical design is ugly, so "iphoned"), so I'm waiting for CES this january 7th and see what they have to offer. I hope they don't disappoint us, and now SONY have to work harder since a new strong competitor is on his way: Ubuntu Phone. It really looks interesting, plus, I'm a Linux fan since 2004 and I've seen how this great system has evolved, until the point of being almost ready for smartphones. But I also love Android, so, we'll see.
Anyway guys, I can't say definitely "bye", I'm sure we'll meet again in some point, of course, If I decide to get another Xperia and if you also do and keep developing for these devices. For now I want to thank great developers such JJ doctor, MrTapa, arcatarc, xparanoidx, and everyone else (sorry if I don't mention all of you) for rescuing me of being stuck in Android 2.3.4 =P I learned a lot while I had my Ray and I was happy using 4.0.4 ROMs, your work is awesome and this community is just great.
So, see you later!
PS: pending projects (such banners and wallpapers) will be accomplished in sometime of the current year. Sorry about that, my free time is smaller now.

I like Sony ROM better than CM? WTF is wrong with me?

I never thought there would come a day when I would say this about a manufacturer skin, but I'm actually enjoying the .290 Sony 4.3 firmware better than CM 10.2 (And I've been a militant CM supporter/user since version 6.1 -- 4 years ago in the Froyo days). Is it just me or do the Sony firmware builds feel noticeably faster? Also the battery life seems to be improved vs CM and the keyboard is sized more appropriately, etc. etc. The small apps are a nifty feature.
Now I never had stability problems with CM 10.2 so it's not about that; CM 10.2 is rock solid, maybe even slightly more stable than the Stock sony firmware but the Sony firmware seems so so much faster! What say you XDA friends? Do you agree? Am I insane?

No, you're, definitely, not insane and you're not alone on this! Exactly, my feelings. I've never thought that one day I'll start liking one manufacturer's skin/UI better than stock Android. But, it happened. And as a result, I've purchased the Xperia Z Ultra. Couldn't be happier more. It's the best phone I've ever owned.
I have to say/admit that I've faced more stability issues on CM more than Sony's firmwares. And for speed : Yes, it's definitely faster! IMHO, Sony's software engineers are done an excellent job for optimizing the software in the best possible way. There is zero lag, zero glitches etc. Just, very buttery smooth experience.
After the Mr. Kazuo Hirai's becoming the presiden and the CEO of Sony, many things have been changed fundamentally and noticeably. They got their innovation back as it was in 90s and 80s and one more time, started to make some unique products (QX10/QX100, first mirrorless Full-Frame camera except Leica : A7/A7r etc.) like walkman back in the day.
Hopefully, they'll keep this momentum and innovation as long as they can and we will benefit/enjoy of these great products.
Cheers,
Tarkan

No you're right, sony have done it right!
They've allowed you to keep the fluidity of stock android and have given you customization that dont slow the phone down
I couldnt be happier with my Z Ultra
It used to be that the smartphone SoC was very limited in terms of capability so a clean ROM is the better choice. But with rapid development and less bloat on Sony's UI (+cool design) and slower Android upgrade it is clearly better now. So yeah, not that much reason should i jump to CM ROM again (unlike previous RAZR MAXX of mine) for now Maybe if the Android 5.0 come out in the future i guess but for now no..

I Concur! I've had this device for about three months, & I really enjoy it also! I purchased it with the Sony UI in mind and sure enough it did not disappoint. I wasn't upset to see the Google edition released so soon after I bought this one. This is really the longest I've ever went without root also, as most prior phones did not make the 30 day mark.
I honestly would be happy with root access on the stock Sony Rom, however with all the confusion of root methods / model numbers / TA partitions / possibility of losing LTE, I'm just really trying to be patient. I kept in mind that buying such a large (under the radar phone) my slow my ability to tinker with it, but it's beginning to a bit of a hassle without root.
I recently accepted the 4.3 update, & the speed and mellow performance was noticed immediately. I was trying to stay on 4.2 as I had read different threads saying it was able to be rooted as oppose to 4.3 .290 but as of recently that seems to have changed now... This whole phone's process seems extremely confusing, and I'm tired of reading different contradicting threads .....and it's never a good idea to start playing with your phone when your frustrated & uninformed so I guess I'll just hang out a bit longer until things seem clearer....
I am with you guys.
Although on Note 2 I did not go with any AOSP except from the usual testing, but always came back to stock because of Spen features.
With the Ultra, this stock rom is so light, smooth and plus I keep the phone features plus it has been designed better to use the larger screen...I am VERY impressed with the Sony Rom so I dont see myself flashing anything but Sony based Roms.
I enjoy my phone now more than just using it to flash new stuff trying to get it to be better
Ah after I try a lot of custom ROM
monxDIFIED is my daily ROM
It is Sony base because I prefer stock app
FM Radio
Stock Camera
If I can install two stock app in CM base ROM like Carbon ROM
I may think using CM base ROM as my daily drive
That's common and you are not alone. I too am using the Stock 4.3 without any intention of flashing other ROMs (I do really love flashing as I had nearly flashed every Android phone I have ever owned)
I'm back on stock after a day on GPe. I love AOSP and the GPe ROM is amazing, but I tend to always end up back on stock again. Not sure what it is, but it's solid as a rock, and I know exactly how it works and what it does. No surprises. I feel safe using it, so I guess that's why? Xposed has also changed the way I use ROMs. No longer do I have to flash ROMs if I want a weird feature, I just install a module. I feel like I don't have to flash anything these days, except for when I want a different environment/UI.
In not that tired of Sony's UI quite yet (but I'm slowly getting there), but I'll probably migrate to the GPe full time down the road. BUT, official 4.4 is on its way, so it'll be really exciting to see how it'll be.

Im back running stock UI as well (own rom with Dogg tweaks), and am more or less happy with it.
Cant wait for 4.4 stock (not here today yet)
I had a Nexus 7 and I ran AOKP, I had an Nexus 4 and I ran AOKP, I had a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and I ran CyanogenMod. Today I switched to Sony Xperia Z Ultra and I don't want to switch to AOSP. It never happened before, but I feel like Stock ROM is good
my galaxy tab is always on another rom, after that i had asus padfone, which had no development at all. and z ultra makes me not want to change to another rom at all. loving the stock, dunno why. I'm still on 4.2 and for me it's pretty smooth and fluid already i dont even need to upgrade.
Recently get an OTA for 4.3, but there's no way to root it in a simple way. tempting to root using jackie's way or flashing monx but im still too lazy to do it, still enjoyin my current 4.2 haha
I think sony did a good job here
I'm with you too dude. For me it's close enough to stock not to piss me off, their skin is simple and black base (better for battery), and I like some of the bloatware too.
I have deleted a lot, but that's another thing I like, I was able to delete or freeze most of what I didn't want without needing root. On touchwizz practically nothing could be deleted without root.
For me, Sony have worked it really well, bugs aside, and 290 is perfect IMHO except bluetooth.
I love cm, don't get me wrong, I just don't need it as much with Sony as I did with Samsung.

Same here, actually i'm still on 4.2.2. Still amazed with stock rom, looks good and stays smooth and fast. I can endless opening apps, not any hick up. OOM works unnoticed, and don't need to restart device. On my old LG 3d i changed roms and kernels continously. My son his tab2 flashed a hour after purchase. My Acer A700 running CM10.1 unfortunately my daughter jumped on screen i need to order new screen/digitizer.
But i'm surpised with myself that i'm still on stock and don't want to flash. Only reason for me to flash would be working miracast with my LG 55LM750S.
I'm back on the GPe ROM I was bored yesterday, so the only thing to do when i'm bored is to install or flash something. I'm still amazed how everything is running so smooth and i have still to find a bug. I haven't found a single one. I find it funny that we went from AOSP ROMs that had their fair share of problems, to a AOSP ROM that is perfect like THAT.
I guess i'll keep using GPe for now, but i find some small things to be a little annoying. The volume is rather strange. It can be really quiet on one level, and be really loud on the next one, which makes it very annoying since i have to try to find the sweet spot. The stock ROM is much better at this. The quick toggles are also quite bad. Why do i have to press and HOLD to activate/deactivate a feature? Why can't i just tap a toggle like on CM? One tap on AOSP will open the settings for that feature, and someone at Google should be shot in the face. Well, that's about it really
I agree, been on and off Cm9-10 for years with some stints on Samsung's JB, but these ROMs rock. Only complaint is WIFI is a bit flakey. I don't even have a reason to root.
I have both a C6833 and Tablet Z.

With my ex Galaxy S3 I went from stock to CM in like 4/6 months, and from there I just wanted to change phone like every day.
I guess I just want this to be my phone for a long time, therefore I'll wait to transform it to see if the stock rom satisfies me long enough to get to the official 4.4.2 update.
Which, I bet will be the last "quick" update.
After that I'm sure we will see 4.5, but at a super slow pace.
Anyway, I need time to install and backup everything to begin trying the GPe, and with a 6yo daughter and a 40days son I really don't have much left... XD

Congrats! I guess that's why we haven't really seen you around here that much lately, but you have a brand new boy in your house now so that's expected

Thanks! I try to keep up with everything but now even Tapatalk is against me (meaning the new interface is fugly as hell).
Anyway, I'm curious, does the GPe support multiple users like on the Nexus 7? It is a fantastic feature as it keeps my daughter within the fence of her few apps...
That may be a feature I'd be interested in...

Hmm, i have no idea. I think it "pops up" when you activate tablet mode. I know that CM supports it though, but since GPe build is strictly made for the ZU, Sony may have removed the feature (i can't prove it though).
