Help! My kickstand isnt working any more - Motorola Photon 4G

My kickstand just stopped working out of the blue. It still works physically i.e. it deploys fine but the OS doesnt register it i.e. I dont get the alternate homescreen selection screen and wakelock isnt activated.
I was on peetr's hybrid v15 when i first noticed the problem. It was working fine when i was on v14 yesterday so i went back to that, wasnt working. Then i tried CM9, didnt work in that either.
So i decided to reset to factory image using the sbf but on bootup it was just stuck on activating network for a really long time so not sure if it worked in factory image or not (did not work in the activating network screen)
After that i tried CM7.2 and again, not working.
I dont understand what can cause it to stop working suddenly like this..? I havent dropped it or anything and it still opens fine and registers the click while opening.
Anybody got any ideas?

It is based on magnetic contact. Try to look, if there's still that little magnetic spot on the opposite side of kickstand. You can take some bigger magnet and apply a few times to your phone (near the kickstand). Maybe that contact got stuck.

I dont think its magenetic. I currently have my phone opened up in front of me. There's a large metalic block with a small spoke coming out of it and a C shaped metallic thing attached to it and is freely movable. The block is reactive to the magnet at the tip of the kickstand but the tip of the kickstand rests well beyond both the block and the c- shaped thing.
So how does it actually work..???
touching the tip of kickstand to the block or rotating the c- shaped thing does nothing.
Have a look at this video to understand..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBgsZbugWJg&feature=player_detailpage#t=118s
the thing just below the battery connectors.

Ok. Maybe your phone is different. My reacts with magnet. ;-)

No, it reacts to the magnet, I meant the thing inside (under the kickstand) isnt even placed directly under the kickstand's magnet... and that spinning thing inside doesnt react to magnet..
Can anyone give men any info about how that kickstand sensor works exactly..?

I don't have my Photon disassembled, but if I do understand you and the video right, that spinning thing is vibrator motor. That magnetic contact is maybe on the back cover and connected to the board with pins, as the rear speaker is.

aah thats the vibrator.. well that makes some sense..
But then this is really weird, there is no magnetic contact on the other side for the magnet at the tip of the kickstand..
There isnt a sensor of any sort at the hinge of the kickstand either..
I could definitely make out the speaker and its contacts but nothing that looked like a magnetic contact for the kickstand..
will open again and take a look again..

You ever figure this out? I had a similar issue, but for very, very different reasons. I tend to overlook obvious things from time to time though but I doubt that's what you did. Either way, I'm just curious if it's working for you now.

Same issue, opened my photon, tried magnet (on opened and closed), no reaction. Same in the recovery (key test)
What is it?

I remember when my kickstand stopped working. It was when I was in cwm and a menu popped up saying format partition or something like that. I just hit OK and thought nothing of it. But come to find out that erased the PDS partition on my phone so I was unable to update my profile or prl because of that. That was when my kickstand stopped working also. I did the PDS fix posted and my kickstand started back working again and I was able to update my profile and prl again. Don't know if that was why my kickstand stopped it not but the timing was perfect.

well im not that good at open my photon bu twhen i saw the configuration it did say a magnetic switch although i dont know how, and i haven't try and see if its magnetic

Thanks!!

need your opinion on what my problem is.

ok so i have a tmobile tp2 and been having it since the first week it was released.
for the pass couple of days the call, home, and back buttons wont function like they need to.
also when i slide my keyboard up the screen goes completely black even when i close my keyboard, the only way to fix it somewhat is to keep pushing the sleep/wake button untill it turns back on.
my guess is that maybe something like a cable became loose and is causing it to have these problems, and i just wanted to hear what you guys have to say about it, or what you think the problem is and what you would recommend to fix it because i cant afford to buy a new phone for quite awhile.
Posting in the Accessories forum might not be your best shot at an answer.

Sounds like an app running to me. Even File Explorer (when searching the Windows folder) can cause my phone to hang for a long time. I would check in task manager to see if something is running. You can also try and app called "Clean Ram", it works great. The other option is a hard reset, to ruke out software issues. It could be harware, but I doubt it.

Very true.
It's likely a loose cable as you presumed. Hopefully you still have time left on your warranty.
I hate to be the oen to say it, but it sounds like your ribbon cable is going.... My son had the same thing happen on his Kaiser/Tilt (Grandpa to this Phone)... It started like you said... then got worse over the matter of a few weeks... His screen woudl only work when it was closed... the buttongs on the screen housign stopped working properly... then his memorycard reader (it was in teh screen part on that phone) went nuts... got to the point where that phoen was basically useless... I hope that isn;t your problem, but it sounds like it..

yeah i can pretty much say that it is the cable since i could still slide my keyboard but the screen just looks fuzzy like and when i close it, it takes time to adjust back to normal. so basically now its just an all touch screen phone to me now... sort of sucks since i miss using the keyboard so much.
and yeah the buttons got worst now to a point where none of them worked but somehow the back button started working again so thats the only button that does work now.
and a new problem started occuring in the last few days, the screen would turn on by itself with even a slight bump around where the battery is located, it really sucks for me cause it kills my battery faster and it just starts opening up random apps while its in my pocket.
I would like to hear what finally happened. People don't forget we are using WM phones. So no matter what the problem, hard reset before deciding!

wow super late response to this.
but my final verdict is that it was the flex ribbon cable that is the issue.
my TP2 doesnt even show anything no more, its still functional but you just cant see whats goin on with the screen because its like its turned off.
it stopped working on me on dec 25,2010 (what a great present from the phone, huh?) to how i described it.
so now im using my sisters old HTC dream, but even this one is starting to have an issue with the ribbon cable too! i just get bad luck with these phones now i guess.
edit: oh yeah i still have my Rhod210 just sitting on my desk till i get it fixed... oh how i miss my TP2!
Another late response then
Fixed it yet, have you?
this occasionally happens to my phone too, that it, the screen blanks out sometimes. the cause in my case is pocket lint. since it's hayfever season, i carry tissues in my pocket which kind of disintegrate to confetti after a while. while my tp2 is in my pocket, these tissue particles tend to get in behind the ribbon cable and cause some kind of blockage. by just blowing in around the ribbon cable area, it tends to clear out those fluffy bits and the screen is working again. so don't carry tissues in your pocket with your tp2

i actually took the time to open up the touch pro2 all the way today for a full diagnosis on it, and i was right. it was the cable. where the cable is exposed when it tilts, it looks like it sort of got stripped around that area. im not sure how but it left part of the cable exposed which im guessing is whats causing it to have the issue. i was taking a couple of pictures as i was disassembling it, but i forgot to take a picture of the cable itself to show you what i mean. maybe ill disassemble it again tomorrow so i can take a pic! =)
but yeah im still using the g1, and i finally fixed it! (ended up bricking a g1 so i used the other as replacement parts on it) but hopefully not for long cause graduation is tomorrow for me, and i MIGHT end up getting a new HTC phone as a graduation present from the family. so i hope that does happen!
ok so i reopened the touch pro 2 and took a pic of the cable to show you what i ment.

[Q] Touchscreen issues!

Hi everyone
I got a problem with my folio 100.
The touchscreen sometimes not response suddenly for seconds when I playing a full screen game such as Friut Ninja, and then it get right again.
I tried many ROMs, include Dexter's v1.1 n v1.4 n blur1.0, Notion2.0, and even the original TOSHIBA foliostock. The issue always exists. Especially, I found that, when I use multi-touch, the problem is more likely to appear.
I'm sure that's not a hardware problem, because the screen mostly works well.
I always has that problem, in games and normal use. Problem is in bad made parts for Folio-Toshiba fault.

I´ll tell you what worked for me.
Take of back cover and tight every screw, then use an A4 paper and fold it in two.
Then put the paper on top of the battery, there´s a gap between the battery and cover, then close the folio and try it if it helped.
Mine is working great since then, and even better with cyanogen mod 7.
thanks, maybe i'll have a try.
but that seems solves the influence from the battery? I think mine can be a software problem...because i found that the touch screen stoped only when the system seems stucked
Try it , you´ll never know .
And try cyanogen mod also.
Unfortunately with our folio´s it´s a case of trial and error
Oh Gosh it works!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank u a lot!!!
i put in a paperboard rather than a thin paper and then it works!!!
thanks!!! you r so kind!!!!!
hey! try that Portuguese guy's method, just below your reply...it works on my device!! yes !!
and i forgot to say that i've tried the CM before, it's true that it is not very completed yet. and it even may cause some strange problems when you flash a elder system.
new question~
as i said before i used a thick paper. but the problems still appeared several times(much better than before)
however a too thin paper also doesn' work.
did you just used a folded A4 paper??
I had the same problem, but I brought my Folio to service, they gave me a new device, and it works perfectly! If you have a guarantee, it worth a try.
yeah that's true
i gonna have a try, though i've solved that problem by putting a little piece of sponge into the device

hi.
anyone can upload photo?
thanks.
I also had this problem with my Folio.
Putting something in the back between battery and casing helps for a while. But the problem just comes back, only to be solved by placing a thicker piece of paper until it breaks again. It is also not consistent to reproduce (sometimes it works perfect all day, and the next day it is a pain to use)
I had the issue when the Folio was 2 months old. After the 3rd month, I have send it back to Toshiba as I still had warranty.
It is still working now (it must be + 1 year since repair).
thanks, spicy.
i will try this night.
my folio worked perfect until last week.
i flashed android 4.1.2 but no luck.
thanks again.

FIXED! Anyone else's compass broken with ICS?

Bricked (and fixed) my razr yesterday thinking reverting to .211 would fix my compass. Didn't work. Seeing that it seems to be common. I'm wondering if anyone else has had issues with their compass, and if there's been a fix.
Just passed to ics and compass doesn't work. Any idea?
Sent from my XT910 using xda app-developers app
osmand work like a charm, gps status doesn't work sometimes, google maps simply refuse to turn. don't know what's going on.
I had this issue on gb and ics, has something to do with the magnetic field sensor getting stuck or the metal trim around the edge of the phone getting magnetised. I was able to get it to work again by pulling my sd card, doing a hard reboot (vol - and the power button, keep holding after the screen shot), reboot, open a compass app, I used smart tools, take something magnificent (be sure you have removed the sd card and not to use a very powerful magnet) then start moving the magnet circular around the phone at a great distance, moving closer until you see the compass start to move. I wouldn't touch the magnet to the phone or get closer than 1 1/2". It's risky. But if it's stuck, it may work it loose. You may also try degaussing your phone. Just do your research, because this is all very dangerous for your phone, and can render it useless.
Edit: you may want to check if just the hard reboot fixes it before you try anything else.

Degaussing?
I may have to give the magnet trick a cautious try as I already damn near bricked my phone trying to reflash the firmware.

If the magnetic trick doesn't work, if you could find a tv repair shop or something similar that have the tools for degaussing (de- magnifying) and have them do it for you. There are tutorials online that show you how to build degaussing tools, but it's not a job for the faint of heart or something you should do with out understanding what you're doing.
The magnet trick worked for me, I used a magnet I use to magnify/demagnify screw drivers. Laid my phone on a table and went around my phone at about 1/2 foot away from it brought it in to about 3/10ths of a foot and all the sudden the compass started spinning with the magnet and my compass has worked ever since. Your biggest danger is 1. Magnetising the metal trim around the screen or 2. Corrupting the flash memory. Our phone should be shielded, but obviously not too well if were having this problem.
Let us know what happens, what you try and what ends up working /not working. Good luck!

The magnet trick kind of, worked but not really. I used a fairly strong magnet that I had on my fridge, and got it close enough where I could feel it tugging on the phone. Then, and only then did the compass move a bit, but it wasn't loosened into working. Did a reboot, no change.
Edit: I gave this a few more tries using the phone tester app to see if the values would register, then some more hovering my magnet over the compass app. It finally dawned on my that my pc speakers, which were no more than 8 inches away from the phone might be interfering. I moved to the middle of my room, and kept hovering the magnet around while using the smart tools compass this time. It registered a couple times, but nothing promising, then at some point it just started freaking the f*** out, and kept doing so even if I backed out of the app. Opened the other compass app, and whatduya know...it works! Went back to smart tools, reset that, and all is well there too.

Phone turns off when dropped a small height

Does anyone know why my phone turns off when dropped, even from a small height?
I'll set my phone down from like a height of 2 inches and it'll just immediately turn off when it hits the surface. I'm thinking it's because the battery gets jarred from the connections. I tried stuffing the back cover with paper to make less space between the cover and battery less so it's harder to get loose but it still turns off when it falls.
Does anyone else have this issue and knows how to fix it?

u may need to open it and check the inside ribbon cables but who knows ...
prolly not the issue but u may have a broke or loose pin in the charge jack thats grounding out idk
may be far fetched but if possible try another battery alltogether maybe theres a fault in the battery itself somehow
lookup how to calibrate the touchscreen if possible
these are all guesses i hope they somehow help u
water damage ?
backup and reset ?
dont feel bad mine refuses to work with h2o and another works fine and one chooses when it wants to left softkey lights to work and not work and recovery cache clear doesnt work ..
also sounds stupid but maybe somthing in the screen itself is causing an error did u ever have issues with the screen itself or touch
loose or cracked connection on board ? taken apart before ? pinched ribbon cable dents anywhere ?
clean contacts ? sorry i dont have the answer but somthing is better then nothing right ?....
^^ that guy looks like he knows what he's talking about. But, try putting a peice of paper between the back of the phone and the battery to tighten the connection.

Thanks, I will try your suggestions!
I have the same issue. If dropped from even 1" up it will turn off and then immediately reboot. It is kind of annoying lol. Won't do it when it's plugged into the charger.
Update: Did as suggested and put a piece of paper (half a business card) between the battery and the backing. Phone (when dropped from 2-3") doesn't shut off anymore. Makes me happy how that simple fix worked haha.
My phone gets dropped at least a couple times a day while I'm working... never an issue like you guys have. Definitely sounds like it could be a warranty issue huh?

[Q] Really love the z2, BUT...........

I will have to trade it in if i cant find a solution for my issue
Basically i have only 2 issues with my phone
1) I keep my phone in my back pocket generally, but quite often when i pull it out of my pocket, the little door for the sim card/charger has popped open........ altho it makes me a bit scared to submerge it, i can live with this
2) This is the dealbreaker, if i cant solve this the z2 will be getting sold and something else will take its place. Again this only occurs in my pocket, but every single time i pull phone out, its changed the homescreen...... widgets either get added toor removed from homescreen, apps open and run, music player starts and stops by itself, notification bar quick settings icons get added or removed, flight mode gets activated, silent activated etc
I believe this is caused ny the screen reacting to metals, wood and lead, is therea way to turn this feature off so it will only work with my finger touching the screen?
As i said, its a fantastic phone and id like to keep it, but as long as it gonna keep doing these random things in my pocket then its just not worth keeping

Your flap is defective. Same thing happened to me. I've bought a new flap (for about 10€) and now it's fine.
Then, don't open your flap too often, prefer wireless file transfer and charging via magnetic port.

The screen will still respond to metal objects and pencil lead etc, but it should be activated by your backside through your jeans anymore.
Crap..... glove mode is not switched on........ guess it gotta go up for sale then. Will be sad to see it go tho, n yeah already got magnetic charger n wireless connect.... ive only actually opened that door twice lol
Or another possibility, as im rooted, is there something i could remove/freezethat will stop the screen responding to other materials????
Not to my knowledge. It's strange, I often carry mine in my back pocket (screen facing inwards) and have never had the screen turn on. I can't say the same for my G3 which often turns the screen on.
Since it is isolated case and no one else expierenced this as far as i can tell its user error, you got dodgy apps or there is something wrong with the way you handle the phone.

possibly but i wouldnt have thought so..... i dont treat this phone any differently to any other phone ive owned (well.... actually i havent thrown the z2 across the room...... yet, lol) and as far as apps go, i only actually have 5 or 6 downloaded apps installed, all of which i have used without issue on previous phones, and deleted around half of the useless (to me) pre loaded system apps, and its been doing it since i had it, well since a few days after i got it, but the first few days were a weekend and i wasnt at work just chilling at home so phone didnt really go in pocket

Actually yesi do have that switched on..... even if that the cause tho, my work trousers arent made of wood, metal or lead so screen shouldnt be responding to my backside. I will turn it off n see how it goes tho, it might be the cause but then again you gotta be quite precise for that double tap t work anyway and my backside is tiny lol so maybe not........ great suggestion tho

I have knock on turned off - otherwise when walking with the phone in my pocket listening to the FM radio, I end up sending several texts and emails....
Update: It appears it was actually the 'tap to wake' causing the issue..... i turned it off and went to work friday night and when i got home saturday morning phone was exactly how it should have been, no open apps, no options changed, no icons removed. Nice feature but think ill leave it off forever lol
