S3 screen stays on while plugged to charging - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Recently my S3, when charging, does not have its screen turned off. It was not the case when I got my phone but is happening the last few days.
Not sure what went wrong, but currently I am on XXALF6 + Siyah 1.2.6.
Any clues?

Set to 30 seconds, but it does not turn off only when charging.
Pretty sure something went wrong either through flashing the firmware/kernel :/

Had the same problem. Solved it by downloading "extended controls" and there is an option that keeps the screen on while charging...switch this off. Something must have triggered it but there is no option in the standard Galaxy menu to switch it off.

thanks man! how the hell did that setting turned up :/

I noticed this after updating my EC. It's on by default.

The stock ICS at least has an option to keep the screen on during charging (Settings -> Developer options), maybe this option somehow got turned on? Samsung has, for some reason, decided to hide this option from the stock ROM, though, but maybe some apps (such as Extended Controls) still can enable it?

Can someone tell me where this option is in EC, I can't find it...
edit: nvm, it's a switch you have to add, I was looking for a program setting ^^

Correction: you have to add it as a toggle in the widget. Once the widget has been added to your homescreen, you can toggle it off.

Hey dude, thanks for this, I have referenced it in a post where I asked the same question. I hope people give you some thanks for this. I had already extended controls installed but never thought to use that toggle. Did you have the program installed before it happened, maybe there is something to do with the S3 and this tool that triggers it?

The screen on triggered when I tried to use a non original HDMI cable from Ebay.

screen stays on all the time
apologies in advance for being new and potentially asking something stupid! I have a similar problem, however my screen is staying on all the time - when not charging.
I have set screen timeout to 30 seconds and tested with the smart stay setting both on and off. I am running the stock 4.04 ICS rom:
Baseband version - I9300BULG2
restarting the phone doesnt appear to help (it did once, but after a while it was back to staying awake.). Currently the smart stay option is on, but I noticed that the little eye icon that normally pops up to check if you are looking at phone never appears, so I am assuming the phone "thinks" its being actively used.
In an attempt to try to fix problem, I removed all widgets from the home screens but that does not appear to have helped. Wondered if anyone else had this problem?

Dude, i believe there is a setting that you can find in extended controls, irs called "Screen Always on" install extended controls from play store and create a widget to disable this and you should be sorted.

Ah, I thought from previous comments that this might only fix if the problem only occurred when the phone was charging. I will go give it a try now. thanks

I am new here, and currently having the same problem most others are -- the screen lighting up like a Citi Field night game once fully charged.
I just bought Extended Controls. I see a widget with a brightness button, I selected it, but have no idea how to program it so that my phone doesn't light up in the middle of the night once charging is complete.
Can some kindly provide some instructions on how to program the widget?
Thanks

Dude, read this thread, the answer is there. Basicly, add a toggle called "stay awake" and you should notice that its got a green line under it. Press the toggle to turn it off and your good to go.

thanks for your help. I installed the widget and the "Screen Always On" wasnt enabled... however I have since found the problem. I noticed the phone was getting pretty hot when apparently idle, so figured something was constantly running even though it didnt seem to be, The culprit was a samsung app which I installed, tested (thought was a bit pointless), then forgot about. It was called "Drivelink" anddownloaded from samsung app store. I wont make that mistake again!
thanks for your help though... That app looks pretty useful so happy to have been pointed in it's direction!

[APP] [WIP] [BETA] Reboot Scheduler [10/15/2011]

This is an app I've been working on for a couple days now. I know its not a original idea but its something I wanted and therefore I had to make this app
Reboot on button press
Reboot to recovery
Reboot to bootloader
Hot reboot
Power off
Schedule reboot
Works on Sense
REMINDER! This is a BETA release which means there may be bugs in the app. Use at your own risk.
There may be a problem with the app that makes it bootloop after a couple of days. I think I've fixed this issue but just in case, use the widget! If you phone starts to bootloop, hit the disable button and it will stop. If this does happen (bootloop), please let me know in the comments.
Keep in mind:
The icon is generic (only colored blue) and will be changed.
All menu options *should* work.
Disable/Enable schedule works.
Menu - Settings - Backup and Restore works (for me).
Menu - About - works lol.
Menu - Setup - setup the schedule (same for button).
Menu - Quit - does what it says eh?
Only functional (enable/disable) widget works.
Press the "hot reboot" button before scheduling (requires its own SU permission).
Anyhow.. with that said, I would like testers for what does *work* so far thanks!
Reboot Scheduler 10/15/2011
Changelog:
10/01/2011 - Initial release.
10/05/2011 - Enable/disable widget works perfectly now, fixed the bootloop issue (hopefully).
10/11/2011 - Works on HTC Sense now. In fact, should work on any ROM (so long as you're rooted of course). Fixed issue with setup button on HTC Sense. New landscape button layout. Changed enable/disable widget background to transparent black.
10/13/2011 - Added ability to change the background color (in settings). Added checkbox option to disable/enable confirmation screen when hitting reboot buttons (in settings). Added power off as an option and button on main layout and ability to schedule shutdowns. Fixed landscape layout for our phones (no more scrolling).
10/15/2011 - Had issues reported with bootlooping after 4 or 5 days. Re-wrote the alarm manager code to have hopefully fixed this issue for good. (I wasn't setting my Calendar event with the current system time in milliseconds, my bad! lol). Make sure to uninstall old version before installing new one!

Found a bug! If you set the repeat daily and it reboots, on second reboot (I believe) it will boot loop (at least it did on my phone). Must have made a mistake in my calculations when setting the time for next reboot (that's what I get for programming so drunk lol). So uninstall the app to be safe or disable schedule then reboot normally to be safe. I will re-post on here once I fix it.

Got the problem resolved, added hot reboot option. Uploading and will post new app here soon. Oh, and a reminder: if you're going to set hot reboot as the scheduled reboot; you must first hit the hot reboot button and accept the SU permission. In other words, hot reboot first before scheduling so it gains the SU permission.
Haven't run into any issues so far with the updated version. I'll let you know if I run into any problems

I've released the newest beta (see OP for download). Keep in mind the instructions from the OP. Everything should be functional, but in case I remind you to follow those instructions. Please test it and let me know any issues. Thanks.
So far all functions work perfectly. I will keep u posted about the possible bootloop in a few days or so. Good job on this app, its clean and smooth.
Edit: used several times without a hitch. Will keep u posted as to whether any boot loops occur over the next few days.
Edit: day two: worked flawlessly no bootloops.

Just intalled this today. All the reboots work properly as far as i can tell. I think this is a great idea. I find my phone needs a reboot once in a while and why not let it do that while I'm sleeping.
Here are 2 observations that i had.
When i go to set the time for the schedule the number wheel is very unresponsive. I running the latest miui(10.7). It was very difficult switching the time. Shouldn't be a huge deal now that i got the time right and shouldn't have to switch it again.
The other is i use no frills and when it goes to set the values upon booting up it states, "values not set, unclean shut down". And again probably not a huge deal either as i set the max a 806mhz so its probably not any different running without it. Its just I've been having really good battery life lately and don't want to change anything.
Once again great job on this and thankyou.

That's very strange. On the set time dialog, the TimePicker is standard (un-modified android widget). I'll be flashing MIUI later today and see what I can find. As for the unclean shutdown, it really is lol and unfortunately is the only way I can for now.

Ok. Yeah its the standard time picker that i have for any other app. When i try to spin in slowly i have to do it 3 times to get it to move 1 number. Sometimes i can flick it and it'll spin but who knows where it's gonna land. I understand on the unclean shutdown. Thanks.

Maybe that's something with MIUI. The TimePicker allows you to press the + and - buttons to add and subtract hours/minutes or enter the values with keyboard. I don't know what you mean by spin.. I can press and hold a button on sense and it will keep going up or down in value but there's no spinning that I'm aware of.

Horrible battery life help!

Hey guys, so since i've gotten my S4 i've noticed that I have horrible battery life. My biggest gripe is when i'm not touching my phone. For instance, last night, charged my phone and after it was done I went to sleep. About 12 hours had passed by the time I had touched my phone from it being charged, minus checking the time a few times. My phone drained from 100% to 64% percent, not being used! I'm gonna try and give as much info as I can as I want some help to understand what's going on. Ok, I use Nova launcher. I have one widget that I use, HD widget clock. I put my phone on blocking mode when I go to sleep to suppress all notifications. So there is no LED usage when the phone is idle. The other thing I like to do is end every active application and clear memory(both from task manager) when I go to bed. Last night for the first time I turned off Wi-fi to see if that would help, obviously not. the last thing I do is turn the screen brightness all the way down. I'm gonna include some screenshots of the app "better battery stats" so maybe that will help, because I don't completely understand it.
Thanks for any help.

Not sure why to say. My wife has a S4, stocked and her battery life is more than adequate.

My s4 has great battery life. I rooted it, removed a lot of bloat ware, installed SetCPU and applied some profiles. Since I can't use my phone at work, I turn my data off and leave it there. In 8 hours, my battery level only went from 100% to 94%. When I'm at home, I also leave my mobile data off and connect to my wifi. I also use a task killer as well. Screen brightness can also take a major affect. There are many ways to conserve your battery. If you have a lot of apps running in the background, that can drain your battery as well.

It shows over 4 hours awake time...were you using it for that time?...if not you have a major wakelock that keeps your phone from idling...personally I keep WiFi data and all location access turned off unless using them...better battery stats is a great app...there is a function on there that allows you to see what's causing wakelocks...it should help in diagnosing some or most of your battery drain...I used it to find my issues and last time I did a short test I lost 3% in about 16.5 hours...that's with a couple very short calls/texts and only using it to check time

No...nova is just an overlay that makes things more user friendly...touchwiz is always running in the system and can't be removed without damaging stability...if Samsung would ship their devices with pure android from original source their devices might near perfection...but I have never used nova and don't know how it affects battery

I run Nova and it doesn't effect battery life at all for me. There are some really good wakelock detectors in the play store that are easier to use although better battery stats is good too. I'd try using greenify as well. It works great

(SOLVED) Help! My note 3 no longer auto rotates screen.

For some reason, the auto rotate function has stopped working. I'm rooted on a stock 4.4 Rom. The situation occurred after I was removing some bloat ware using titanium backup. I first assumed I must have dropped it, causing sine damage to one or more of the sensors. I've downloaded numerous sensor testing apps and checked *#0*#, and saw that all the sensors are working (or reporting they're working at least.). What can I do to get auto screen rotation working again, without having to use a third party app?

Alright, you're rooted, running a stock kernel and everything is in alignment (baseband, ROM build number, &c).
Try factory resetting your device, and perhaps installing a stock DeOdex or Odex rom on the dev forum, and see if that doesn't get you back.
I appreciate you showing the screen, but it provides some info that many do not state in their initial post.
I assume you've checked all of the normal places in settings (i think there is a toggle in the pulldown menu for autorotae on/off)).
Good luck, definitely sucks.

I appreciate you showing the screen, but it provides some info that many do not state in their initial post.
I assume you've checked all of the normal places in settings (i think there is a toggle in the pulldown menu for autorotae on/off)).
Good luck, definitely sucks.

I've done a factory reset, and the problem persists. I've made sure the screen rotate toggle is on, and in apps like YouTube where orientation is forced into landscape, if I turn the phone horizontal, the orientation will change. It seems like I just can't get the screen to change into landscape automatically.

So, it works in-app for YouTube when forced (say a video on an app when viewed from the play store), but not when in, say, the stock phone app? Please confirm same.

I just tried the youtube app, When I put the phone in lanscape orientation, there is no change in the screen. If I tap the enlarge button for the youtube app, it will be forced into landscape mode. From there, when I put the phone back into portrait position, it will automatically change, as if the phone was working normally.
What about the Phone App

It would be helpful to know the details requested; namely, your phone app (stock phone, nothing else, not concerned with YouTube at the moment, as we can tackle that later).
Thanks!
WAIT i know your issue.....did you delete the samsung hub apk? write back i can fix your issue in 5 minutes no need to reset anything.
do this
1 extract libgnustl_shared.so from system>lib of your rom's zip.
2. Copy and paste to System>>lib and change permission to rw-r--r--
3. Reboot
dont ask me why but deleting hub deletes that lib. its need for auto rotation. i did the same thing.took me forever to figure that out .

Worked perfectly. Thanks. As a note, the file was missing on my phone. I had to download a copy from github.com. I used Root Browser app to to move from Download folder to System/lib folder, then long pressed on file to open menu where the permissions settings were located. Checking the appropriate boxes set permissions to rw-r--r-- combo.

It shouldn't, no files overlap in mod yet. If it works, profit and I'll release stable. If not, I'll work.
Tried but constant fc wiped cache dalvic reboot etc but still just fc
So exactly how do u enable this? Is there an on off toggle?

Use quick tile mod I posted in general. To activate, use sqlite editor. Go to setting storage -> settings.db -> search "vo" in global/system (whichever). One of those should pop up vowifi or something. Set it to 1 I believe and should walk through activation process when click again. If not, I'll keep up files in next beta
OP Updated, try beta 1.1

Went to settings.db then system and searched "vo" and vowifi or anything like that did not pop up. Flashed the mod but have no way of testing it! :/
Also I have the WifiCalling quicksetting toggle but it takes me to DL Booster lol...

I need all the sprint APKs if you happen to have them. Bc when I dial *2 to go the sprint service thing in the phone it doesn't work... Neither does hands free activation... It just gets stuck there..
Edit: it's called "Sprint zone"
Edit 2: Actually I don't think that matters lol... You should ask slesh bc apparently in his new ROM he has it working! Maybe just ask him for a flashable?!

Let me know man
WiFi calling closes and will not turn on
So I tried this out using v1.1 and made the change in sqlite. When I first boot my phone I get two FC's from WiFi Calling and when I open WiFi calling and try to turn it on it just sits there and never turns on.
One other thing I just noticed is that when I go back into sqlite and look at the value of com.oem.smartwifisupport.vowifi_pref_state it has a value of 0 even though I changed it to 1. Every time I reboot and check the value it is set to 0.
If you happen to know how I can get the value to stick please let me know. That may be why this isn't working for me.

Me and splesh were working on this long before. I knew of it working in mystery rom before I even released this. This is working for temp fixes for AND2 ROM, stock (for now) and future possible fixes if needed.
I'll poke my head in here soon to help if I can. I can write a script that will force the entry in the SQL database as well if that will help.
If you get stuck somewhere or need help with something, let me know.
Cheers - TD

How is that launcher working outon the R1, does the google now swipe work? How about the Wallpaper switcher? Any force close issues? Thinking about flashing the zip and trying it, but if it's not worth it, I don't think I'll bother with it.

I've been using it since I saw it was available(going on 48 hours I think) and not a single FC, freeze up or slow down. I've picked widgets, and wallpapers. Swipe right and Google Now page opens. Hit search and the search bar pops out. Swipe up from the arrow and the app draw slides up as expected. The only thing I haven't tried is the new daily wallpaper option.
I got the R1 just for fun, not because I needed a phone but I have to say I am impressed with it.
Ok so here's the setup so far, converted prime to Oem using Colton's guides, bootloader unlocked, TWRP and root. Manual removal of remaining Amazon bloat and Google bloat I don't use. Mediatek File Manager gone, replaced with Solid Explorer ($1.99US) and supports systemless root. Flashed the Leaked Nexus Launcher and love it!! Removed Launcher 3(stock launcher). But have half a dozen nandroids before each new choice i decide to try,so not to worried if I need launcher3 back. One thing I have noticed after debloating and replacing launcher my memory use hovers around 800-950MB, prior to that it was avg 980-1100MB. It definitely feels pretty nice to me. I have never messed with xposed or anything but who knows maybe I'll read up on it this week. Anyhow a huge thanks to All the devs who been helping out with this phone!!

Yes indeed, that is smart launcher. Standard skin and icons.
Sent from my BLU R1 HD using XDA-Developers mobile app
Thoughts? Not a lot of icons but nova up swipe gestures make stuff work, e.g. up swipe on keep opens collateral, up swipe on sleep launches darker. Icon pack is min with nova prime of course
This is my home screen, Nova launcher, all the icons have swipe up folders in them, widget is zooper, still getting the hang of it.. I've also added a few xposed modules (like the battery circle home button).

Is that Zooper widget from a pack or inbuilt? Personally I use kwgt because I read somewhere thst it uses much less battery. Also what other modules do you use, just curious

I haven't had it use a substantial amount of battery honestly. I'll look into kwgt, thanks!
When the phone screen is off a module called amplify kicks in and really extends the battery life by preventing certain wakelocks/alarms/services, I'm a huge fan.
I've been trying to get a popup window module to work but so far they've all been kinda buggy and gross. I had it on my note 4 (touchwiz) and it came in handy every now and then. I use gravitybox for.. everything... and I use maxlock so I feel better about using the horrible security of 'smart lock' in marshmallow. Only lock the appropriate apps. This is easy to get around if you know what to look for, but it keeps average joe from picking up my phone and using super user xD.

I've found default settings to be a little light. Which is a good thing, I'd rather not miss important things. I've been turning on amplify for some unknown settings relating to some apps i consider 'dumb'. Apps that over-do sync, location poll etc. For example Facebook and Snapchat are about 45% of my service/ram use daily. So after you allow amplify to limit them (by feeding them false information) the battery use is minimal once I let the phone doze. in my pocket it barely uses 1-2% per hour. During heavy use (especially gps time etc) the phone gets quite hot and battery life is appropriately bad.
Amplify has a free mode and if you pay (2$?) minimum it unlocks his paid features, allowing the app to also limit wakelocks and alarms (if I'm not mistaken..)
Stumbled on this thread and it caused me to waste half my afternoon dicking around customizing! Just got my blu R1 yesterday and it's replacing my old HTC One M8 and after unlocking bootloader, disabling Amazon ads etc, I am super-happy and don't miss the m8 at all!
