[Q] Phone stuck in boot loop??? HELP! - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

My htc evo 4g lte will boot up and then freeze during the sprint animation and then shut off and try again and freeze and will continue til the battery dies, i charged it after it died and it still does it?
any help? thanks!

Is it rooted, what did you do before it started boot looping

Please post more information so we can help you
Is it rooted? Did you unlock the bootloader? If so, did you use HTC's method or our own S-OFF? Did the phone run fine before this? Flash anything right before booting it again? Was the phone acting weird?

Hold volume up and power button when phone shuts off aand should get you into the bootloader

Hate to bring back an old thread but it is exactly the problem I'm having. Earlier, I was browsing Facebook on my EVO LTE (completely stock), and it just rebooted on its own. After the HTC screen with the Beats logo at the bottom, I'd get a black screen for a few seconds, and the reboot cycle would start all over again with the HTC quietly brilliant screen... Since then I have not been able to get it to actually start up and load Sense. It just constantly goes HTC quietly brilliant to Sprint to 4G LTE to HTC with Beats logo then black screen and over and over again... Can anyone help? I really don't want to hard reset unless i absolutely have to because I would hate to set everything up again... and also I don't want to hard reset because I can't get into Google Wallet to reset the security settings or whatever... Thanks!

If you aren't rooted i don't think you have much of a choice.
Maybe someone else knows how.

Yeah I'm not rooted... I've tried so many things... does anyone know if hard resetting without resetting google wallet will brick it even on stock?

Don't worry about Google wallet. A hard reset is not gonna brick your chip/element

Hard reset won't wipe your data either. There is a seperate option for that.
In case you didn't know, to hard reset you hold the volume down button and the lock/unlock button for about 10 seconds. let got of the lock/unlock button and then push it again to make the phone go into the bootloader. ONLY SELECT FACTORY RESET. If you select clear storage you will wipe your personal data like pictures and music and such.
I would also recommend you re-install the RUU or take your phone to a Sprint S&R center to have them reflash the software. That way whatever bug is there is guaranteed to be gone.

Common problem
I just had this happen to my girls Evo LTE. She is rooted, but S-on still. She flicked on wifi and it went directly into a boot loop. She's out at the UCF football game now, had to call from a friends phone to let me know it happened. I'm happy to hear that a factory reset won't kill her pics and stuff, she'd be pissed.
Is there another fix?
I googled before coming here just to see if it was a random happening or a frequent problem... it is frequent. Happening to others as well. Seems to be linked to wifi as I noticed flipping wifi on was the cause in a few other cases as well.

We had to do the factory reset. It deleted everything, all pics, except one random one... WTF?

Hi,
My placed my phone in a bowl of uncooked rice for more than 24 hours.
I charged my phone and it keeps rebooting after the beats screen. boorloader says locked on top.
thanks

Try booting to hboot by restarting the phone and holding power+vol- and selecting factory reset

I did but it keeps rebooting
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

try this...from the bootloader, go to recovery. when you get the red triangle, hold vol up then press power. this will take you to the stock recovery. you need to wipe the cache partition. this should get the phone to boot. if it doesnt, then a fdr is the only option left. these instructions are for non-rooted phones. rooted phones...reflash the rom

I wanted to know if there's a way to flash my EVO with a RUU download.

actually you have it backwards...factory reset will erase everything. thats why its in red. its kind of a warning. the clear storage option does not erase the phone storage just the internal storage.

Is there any link to download? When I try to do recovery, it shows the triangle but nothing happens just keeps rebooting. Thanks

You may be out of luck. It sounds like you dropped your phone in water since you mention in your first post that you put it in a bowl of rice for 24 hours. While that may help dry it out, the water damage or short circuit may already have occurred. Since you are having problems that only occurred after the water damage.

[Q] Very Mysterious! Completely Stock EVO 3D Won't Boot!

My wife's EVO 3D, completely stock, S-ON, never installed the OTA update.
The phone was on and she had it in her pocket and felt it vibrate, when she looked at the phone, it was booting up but it appeared to be stuck in a boot loop. She said she saw it rebooting itself (just the initial sprint splash screen) several times before she pulled the battery.
She re-installed the battery, but the phone wouldn't turn on. So she left it alone and brought it home.
The reboot loop was a bit concerning to me, but the phone not turning on sounds like a drained battery. So, I put it on the charger (AC power adapter) for about an hour (orange led is lit).
When I turn it on, I see the boot screen (HTC -> Sprint -> 3D -> Sprint) and then the screen goes black. The soft key LEDs are stuck on the entire time. but nothing happens. I let it sit like that for 10 minutes and it never boots. I've tried several times with the same result.
I can get into hboot (Volume-down + Power)... Almost feels like a corrupt stock ROM?? I can check the CRC, but I don't know the correct values... And no one has tried to root or flash it. I asked if she might have accidentally started the OTA update, but she says not likely...
I've searched the forums here and various others, and it seems all not-booting and endless-boot-loop issues are all due to people trying to root or flash an image.
So.... I don't have a whole lot of experience with Android... What's the next step before attempting a factory reset or bringing it back to Sprint?
Thanks!
EDIT: Typos
Wow, this is very weird. My advice is if you still have 30 day return use it or insurance, bring it to sprint. If not both call HTC and complain but I doubt they cover software issues, idk I might be wrong. Why fix it? Get a brand new one, you paid for it to be working, not broken.

Try removing the SD card and see if it will boot up properly. I had that happen to me once (boot loop and all). Phone would boot fine without the SD card.
I ended up having to format the SD card (connected to my PC with a card reader). That solved the problem.
This happened to my phone once. A factory reset from the bootloader fixes it good as new. It's been like a month and a half since then and I have had no problems since then.

Maybe if the factory reset fixes it for a couple of weeks, then I'll consider again...

Noooo, he can root and solve the problem that way. Just visit Haus's stock ROM thread, and he'll have everything there for you. A stock rooted ROM with all the OTA firmware fixes available for download. Just root first.
This is assuming you live in the U.S, and own the Sprint Evo 3D (CDMA).

Is this kind of failure a known issue with the original stock firmware? I'm not going to take the OTA to keep my options open for rooting in the near future.

Yeah.. I know not to take the OTA... I'm going to root it eventually.
I looked through the complete list of ROMs and didn't see Haus mentioned anywhere... Am I missing something?
Also, is there a common consensus on the top two or three Sense ROMs for the EVO 3D?

*14 days if bought on the 16th.
Try these things:
- Take batter off and hold power button down for like 10 secs, put battery back in.
- Download the RUU from a thread in the development section and flash it (it will replace everything back to stock).
That SHOULD fix it, if its a software issue, if it doesn't, or it still continues to act funky, just take it back to Sprint and demand a new one since you're within your 14/30 days.
Make sprint replace it the phone will be doing the so thing after resting it or trying any other trick its a software issue belive me I had 5 replacements because of software issues

[Q] Bricked???

This morning I was transferring a couple files from my computer to my phone sd card via usb, something I've done a million times. All of a sudden I heard that sound the computer makes when you disconnect via usb and my screen went black. So I disconnected the usb cable and pushed the power button to wake it. No dice. So I held the power button in like I was turning it on. No response. I let it sit for a while, still nothing. I can't boot into recovery or anything. It's like the phone has no power what so ever. The phone had a full charge, so the battery is not dead. When I plug the phone into the charger, the indicator does not come on.
Any ideas? Am I bricked just from a transfer????

An unfortunate problem with the very first batch was an issue where the phone would suddenly go onto a reboot and never come back on, it wasn't very common but enough of a problem for HTC to revise the hardware before selling any more of them. If you had an original it might explain why it suddenly happened, it happened in stock and custom. Nothing you could you could of done if it was an early model

I was @ work when I posted that response. What I wanted to add was the unbricker didn't work for me, mainly because I bricked my device downgrading firmware and the unbricker seems to be for specific brick related to lazypanda. AFAIK the unbricker will work if you bricked using lazypanda , as for phones bricked another way I don't think so.
Also my replacement came with 1.15 hboot . The sprint tech let me power up all the LTE's he had to check the boot loaders. No luck
Remember when we were on preorder someone posted an article about this phone being unbrickable. I haven't a lot of experience with android devices but it seems there are a considerable amount of bricks. Does anybody think this phone is bricking more or less than previous devices.

From what I can tell the hardware id hasn't changed and I got the info from a sprint tech who received over 25 phones in a month with that exact issue and from people who can't figure out their voicemail much less unlock and root
Also plenty of phones with screen discoloration and a few with faulty proximity sensors

No I didn't. I thought the phone had to at least power up to do anything. It won't power on period. The computer doesn't recognize it when it's connected. Sprint couldn't even do anything with it.

Bought water damaged phone for $20, any chance of bringing back to life?

I found a guy via a local classifieds website selling a Thunderbolt with clean ESN/MEID. He explained he got the phone wet (aparently it didn't get wet enough to trigger the moisture stickers), it worked for a few days and then would no longer power on.
I live 30 miles away from him, so I had a family member meet this person and pay the $20 for the phone. I had him make sure it came with the 32gb micro sd and it did! He is coming to my house this weekend, so I'll get the phone then.
I'll try my wifes Thunderbolt's charger and battery to see if either of these are the problem, but if it is water damaged, would the rice trick do any good at this point? Would leaving it on a heater vent do any good? Any other tricks to try?
Water's already done it's damage, vent nor rice would help.
Maybe open it up and check the internals
You'd have to replace it completely from the logic board, up.
A pain, but if you're that patient, you could repair it. But you don't want to put more money into it than its worth. Especially if its not worth a lot.

Open the phone up - remove battery and cards.
disassemble according tot he videos on youtube. remove the screen from the motherboard (its just two cables.
Soak the motherboard in 98% isoproopyl alcohol. let it soak (it can't hurt) and try cleaning the water deposits with a soft brush. The alcohol will displace the water and it evaporates cleaner than water. Make sure the motherboard is out of the plastic frame of the phone when you do this.
Then put it all together and try charging.
As a last resort u soul try taking to a nationwide chain called Cell Phone Repair (CPR). I took my Thunderbolt that got soaked in a heavy rainstorm and they took it apart, treated it with something (for all I know, it could have been rubbing alcohol as the previous poster suggested ) and returned it to me good as new for $100.

This is exactly why I posted this question, I figured someone would have something I can try.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, I'll let you guys know if it works!!!
No worries, btw, there are dis-assembly videos floating around. eg:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdPiT82gWKw
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywDkNUxULSQ&feature=fvst
It appears that if you (1) get something that helps you pry it apart (without damaging the phone) and (2) take your time and go step-by-step then taking the phone apart yourself is doable. That said, it might be worth it to have someone who has done a few tackle it if you aren't comfortable with the process shown in the videos. Good luck!
Ok, so I got the phone today. I used my wifes Thunderbolt battery and the phone powered up (YAY!!!) however the touchscreen doesn't seem to work and as soon as the screen goes to sleep, I can't get it to turn on again without pulling the battery and restarting.
My question is...I've read that rooting the phone can cause this issue and noticed that there was a "clockworkmod" folder. Does this mean the phone was rooted?
UPDATE - I just restarted the phone again and as soon as I saw the unlock rainbow thing (for lack of the right word) I was able to drag it down and unlock the phone and it immediately went to a screen asking me to pick my language, both English and French were selected and it seemed to be frozen and eventually the screen went to sleep. I've got the phone plugged into my computer because now it seems to want to charge it's own battery (YAY) and I noticed that the 4 buttons at the bottom of the screen were still illuminated after the screen went to sleep. Then I noticed that the lights at the bottom went out, so I pressed the power button and the phone came on and I was able to use it for about 4 seconds at which point it stropped responding to touch again.
Does this seem like a software issue or should I just replace the digitizer?
I was able to get it to work long enough for me to enable usb debugging, so tomorrow I'll download a program that lets me use my pc as the phones screen. I figure if I can use the phone through the computer without it locking up, then I know for sure it's a digitizer issue rather than a software issue.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong or should try something else.
I would try reflashing a new ROM and go from there. Can u boot into recovery? If it is a touch recovery, u could test digitizer there.

No, its not rooted at all.
Delete the clockworkmod folder and ANY PG05IMG files from the root of the SD. In fact, I'd reformat the SD entirely.

Or might I add that because it says S-On doesn't mean that its not rooted. S-On just means the bootloader is locked; S-Off means the bootloader is unlocked. If you can, download root checker from the playstore and see if it gains root access... which I doubt it will, but you never know.
There are phones out there with S-On that are rooted.
If this is the case, you'll want to S-Off and install a custom ROM before the ICS OTA drops or you'll have a paper weight.
But I highly doubt this may be your case.

Are you sure it has water damage and not a botched unrooting try? I ask this because you say it has a clockwork folder on the sd card that came with it.

Thats my question..... I was told he got the phone wet and a few days later it wouldn't turn on, but when going throuth the SD card I noticed the clockworkmod folder and thought this was only created when the phone has been rooted and or flashed.
I did some research on the touchscreen not working and see that there are numerous threads stating that a bad rom/flash can cause this, so I'm wondering what my next step would be?
Should I try rooting the phone and just flashing a different rom or would connecting to the phone with a remote control program be a better option? It doesn't appear that the phone is frozen, because the time stays accurate, but sometimes the screen will not turn on after pressing the power button to wake it up, so I just sit it down and after a few minutes try it again, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't????
Delete/reformat the SD card entirely. Reset the phone to factory.
Reroot the phone, get S-off, flash a recovery, and then flash a ROM.
May as well try it out.
It won't hurt anything.
Just a note to get a clean ROM flash:
Clear data/factory reset 3x, clear cache, clear dalvik, and then flash the ROM.

I would also suggest to format system. I usually always include system but one morning after too many sleepless nights and trying to rush things, I formatted sdcard, not system, as they are one after the other in the list in CWM and both begin with 's'. So now I double check and switched to 4EXT.
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
In 4ext you can just use the format all except sd card and get the same result as a superwipe. Works everytime for me.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
I would try and load 4ext and get rid of CWM. Seen to many people have issues with that recovery. Then wipe everything but your sd card. In your case I would wipe that to. Then just install a new rom. He might have gotten the phone wet but if none of the moisture stickers are triggered then most likely the water didnt reach the internals. So if that does work you just made a hell of a deal. I wouldnt tell the person that you got the phone working as he could call verizon and say his phone was lost or stolen and then the phone would be useless to you and might as well have water damage.
That lying son of a *****!
Oh well, that's craigslist for ya, besides the 32GB SD card is worth it.

PSA...If you use LGNPST, do not hard reset your phone.

There have been 2 bricks so far and as of now there is no fix. If you do decide to LGNPST and perform a hard reset by turning your phone off and holding volume down + power, you will brick your new lgog. Apparently LGNPST does not wipe data, which is why I I tried to reset mine. Maybe you could factory reset before you use LGNPST but NOT after.
Edit: It appears that if you are able to reset in the phones general settings menu then you will be OK. But if you can not reset in the general settings menu than I wouldn't try to by holding volume + power and hard resetting. I'm just trying to help out. Good luck to all.

whiteguypl and I have both tried canceling at the reset screen and it wouldn't work for us. No combination of buttons will work either. I've tried disconnecting the battery and that doesn't work either. Thanks anyway for the suggestion, I'm open to try anything.

Just out curiosity when you cancelled. Was your data there or had it already been wiped?
But yeah I couldn't cancel mine either.

Is this "hard reset", the same as doing a factory data reset?
I did LGNPST then noticed all my data was there so I did Factory Reset from the actual phone options and it worked like a charm, no issues...
Are you saying that if you have ever used LGNPST, then you should NEVER again to a full wipe/factory reset from recovery? Or just immediately after using LGNPST?
Can someone please share a link to download LGNPST? Thanks!
LG software sux, this is why im worry about bricking my phone. I like this phone a lot but I'm hesitant to get LG phones.

Maybe if you can do like whoamanwtf did and reset in the general settings menu you might be ok. I tried to reset in the general settings and it would not work.
After I did LGNPST my phone went through all the new phone setup steps but when I got to the lockscreen all my shortcuts were still there and sure enough all my apps with data were still there as well.

We can not provide a link due to some of the rules XDA has. But you are welcome to join #lg-optimus-g on irc and you can get it there.
lyall29 you should update the first post explaining exactly what happened.
I dont think people have a problem if they just do one or the other.
The problem (i believe) comes about if you lgnpst then attempt to factory reset from the settings but it fails and then power off the phone and hold volume down + power to go get the factory reset screen in recovery then it bricks.

Ditto. No problems at all when I did it this way. I am curious though.
To the OP: Why did you LGNPST in the first place? Did you do the N4 conversion?
Lgnpst doesn't wipe your data. It takes you back to stock, unrooted, and locked. Your data will still be there.

I'm pretty sure I did it on mine and it's fine. But you're right that lgnpst doesn't not reset everything. So it must be some other factor.

[Q] Tried Moonshine and Viper and I think I bricked my phone

I thought I'd done enough research into all this, but I guess maybe not.
I used Moonshine to s-off my Droid DNA and everything worked as described no problem. I then installed CWM and made a backup. I then went to install Viper on the phone using this guide.
I got to step 2 in this part of the process:
*WARNING* Although you don't have to, but if you do choose to use the recommended Step 3 which is found below, it will wipe all of your games and apps including saved game data and such. Don't worry all of your photos and music will be fine. Make sure to sync your contacts with your Google account**
1. Scroll down to -advanced and hit power, then do as follows
- wipe dalvik cache
-***go back***
2. Scroll down to -mounts and storage and hit power then:
-format system
-press your back key on the phone to go back
3. Scroll down to -wipe data/factory reset and hit the power button
"you can skip this process but it is a highly recommended one if you want less bugs in the ROM" (If you decide to skip make sure you you also -wipe cache partition which is in the same menu)

I was ready to do step 3 when I saw the warning above about syncing my contacts with my Google acount. This is where I did something really stupid. I rebooted the phone so I could sync those contacts. I thought I was alright because I had a backup if something went wrong.
However now my phone is stuck on the white HTC screen. I've tried to get into the bootloader to restore my backup by holding down the vol-down and power buttons, but it just goes back to the same white HTC screen.
Am I totally screwed here?
I had that problem once ,first how much battery did you have before maybe want to charge to full. Then hold power till lights flash and turns clear off. Then try power volume, it worked for me. Good luck

Thanks for the help guys!
It had around 56% battery I believe. I've been letting the phone charge for a few hours. Tried holding power till buttons flashed & then let it power off. Then I held power and down-volume, and I got the same white HTC screen.
When I run adb devices, this is what I get:
adb server is out of date. killing....

Oh, another thing, don't know if this is useful... When I plugged in the phone to the computer, HTC Sync Manager came up with a pop up that says:
"Device locked.
Unable to recognize the device because the device is locked. Please unlock your device and then reconnect your device."

I'm open to any ideas at this point, because I'm lost as to what to do to fix this.
Is it this one? If not, can you tell me the title or give a link?
Thanks so much for your help!
EDIT: I downloaded the toolkit from the link I posted above, and tried everything in the kit. However they all resulted in a "device not found". Can anyone advise me? Is my phone bricked? If so, is there any recourse other than buying a new phone for $600?
Thanks for any light anyone can shed. It's much appreciated.

Thanks for pointing me to that thread, Ryan. I tried their advised solution, with no luck.
The problem is I can't get into CWM on my phone at all, just the white HTC screen, nothing else. And when I try "adb devices" the device isn't found. When I plug the phone in the computer tries to install a driver (and fails).
I did find this though, so if it's unfixable by me with help from you guys, at least there's hope.

I dont think its bricked. If your computer is seeing it then something is working on the phone its just not showing up. I have had that problem before with cm10 it would stick at the animation screen and then after awhile my computer would see it.
Honestly i think its just a matter of finding the right thing to get it to go. I had to let my phone completely die before it would do anything. So you may try that before spending $60.
Good luck
I dont think your phone is bricked either, if it turns on that usually means there's still hope. However I think zarboz offers a free JTAG for XDA members if worse comes to worse.
I would recommend going on the irc and getting some live help.
Honestly I would turn it off for a while, then just keep trying and keep trying to get into fast boot. Can you still turn the phone off and get it to charge? You can also try plugging it into your charger, turning it on and off, unplugging it, turning it on and off, etc. I know that sounds weird but I've had weird situations like this with a few devices sometimes that type of just screwing around would eventually get it to work.

Also, I know you probably already tried this several times, but try different cables and USB ports and see if you can get adb to see it.

Thanks for the help guys. I let the phone drain out last night, and I plugged it into the charger this morning. It does still charge, and I got it to start up. However, it goes to the same white HTC screen. As long as the phone has power, I can't even get it to stay off. The only way I can get it to turn off is to push both volume buttons and the power button at the same time and hold them down till the buttons flash. Then it will turn off, but a couple seconds later, it turns back on and goes to the white HTC screen. If I try to power off any other way--with just the power button or power button + vol-down button, the buttons will flash but it won't power off.
I even tried plugging the phone into every different USB port on my printer and executing "adb devices" and the phone never came up as a device. But my computer still tries (and fails) to install drivers when I plug the phone in, and HTC Sync loads and gives me the same error message.
I just had some limited success! I plugged the phone into my computer, and tried powering on again with power+vol-down, and the phone went into Fastboot. However, it's still not detected by "adb devices". What should I do?
Thanks for the help guys!
I guess you can't get to recovery in fastboot

If you got it into hboot(screen shows fastboot etc)then u r good. Fastboot uses fastboot not adb to flash things. First try going into fastboot at the hboot screen and hit power button on fastboot and recovery should.be there. Ifthat doesnt work then flash a new recovery. Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img. then use fastboot menu as above to enter recovery. Fastboot devices to verify connection.
Thanks so much for all the help guys! I was able to get into Fastboot and restore my backup I'd made, so I'm back up and running. I'm really glad I didn't brick my phone! I was really worried there for a while!
