I noticed in my account I have been using a lot of data. I watched one YouTube video this morning and 240mb used? Not sure what going on but does this seem abnormal? I been using the phone heavy for the last 3 hours surfing the Web and it says I used about 500mb today.

there is no issue if you have the hd option set in youtube it will use a hd stream aka 720 or 480p. this is why the 2gb plans suck
I have the 5gb plan. I barely watched the YouTube video this morning.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
you do realize if you have the hd option check that it will use a ton of data right?
Even if I did not watch the full video? I played it for like 20 seconds and then exited YouTube. On my old phone (HTC g2) I watched you tube videos all day on hd and did not have these huge data usage stats.

If you have a fast data connection its going to buffer up pretty fast even if only watching for a little bit. Now with the new YouTube update I'd suggest turning prefetch on and subscribe or add to watch later queue. Then when you're on wifi and charging YouTube will download them locally to watch later. Just make sure you've updated youtube as its a new feature added last week
Also are you sure YouTube used that in just one video ? You can slide the data usage date bar to check data for a certain day or block of days. That might be from a few different YouTube videos over the last few days
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
as blue said your buffer could of loaded 200MB of data that fast easily if you are over 5mbps a second. if you watched 20 seconds of video at that speed 100 mb in 20 seconds

Ever since I got the phone on the 22nd YouTube videos wont load or take forever! Only way to get 3d YouTube videos to load is thru wifi. Anyone else have these problems?
There was a disclaimer when u first tried to watch a 3d video that u should use 4g or WiFi because the bandwidth needed us higher than a normal low quality vid, but if its all videos being crazy go to application management and clear data for YouTube

Is there a certain place you go to for 3d youtube vids or you just search 3d in the app?
3g, 4g, and wifi today when searching(<- for the guy above) they all stop at like 20 seconds and drag ass.
I didn't get a disclaimer, and the 3D videos I've been finding (which I've found by just searching 3D in youtube) have only taken 3-4 seconds to load and don't buffer at all after that.
I'd like to know if there is something "Special" you guys are doing?
fixed
Thanks guys. Clearing my cache and data fixed my problem only takes a few seconds to load now. Vs. Trying to buffer for 2 straight minutes. And type in yt3d it'll bring up all 3d YouTube clips.
Glad that helped you

As mentioned in the title, youtube HD videos seems to buffer a lot. I have a pretty good internet connection, constantly get around 10 - 12Mbps download speed. I don't have buffering problems on my laptop or my phone.
Anyone else see this and any setting that might help? Currently I'm turning off HD on videos to prevent buffering but ideally don't want to do that.

now I really dont have that problem due to my difference in internet speed but when I use my 4g from my thunderbolt *around that speed* I do notice the buffering problem only if there are more than one person using the connection at once. just for research, try and see what happens if only you are using the connection (turn off or disable other tech) and see if it actually makes a difference
I have to concur, youtube on Android tablets is a bit subpar. It never buffered this much on my iPad.
I get the same problem here, my pc and my phone load quickly while my GT seems to buffer very often while watching HD.

This is a little weird cuz in my house it backwards, my galaxy tab play YouTube flawlessly but my ipad which pretty much belongs to my 3 year old son, seems to buffer often.
SGT 10.1 uplink initiative
Thought it was just me. Mine buffers a lot using the youtube app.
At times it will freeze during playback. I have to uncheck the HD for it to eventually start playing again.
I haven't noticed it as much if I play it through the browser.

The question is does this reveal yet another weakness in tegra 2 or is this a coding issue with the app??
So many videos either buffer go choppy or fc.
Gears of war 3 ashes to ashes trailer by machinima fc every time.
Im almost certain that it is a coding issue. As it was said above, i only notice the buffer problem in the youtube app, it works fine in the browser.

Ok thanks.....i will try using the browser and see if it is better.

it happens using any browser as well. i remember reading about this issue on the ipad too and people had some mixed results by changing DNS settings but i think it was more of a placebo effect. it's definitely a problem with this tablet though.
for me, it's just the YouTube app.. viewing on browser is fine, so it's a coding issue with the app. I suggest using the Feedback option under the app menu to report this issue. Google needs to hear from us about this.
watching it in the browser introduces a different issue, however - everything above 480 is out of sync.
Same here. Seems tobe a problem with the YouTube app. Smooth streaming HD when opened in stock browser but some buffering in app. My browser had no problems with 480 either. Hope google fixes and updates youtube app soon.
In the Youtube app it's either HD playback or grainy. There does not seem to be anything in between.

same here!!
It buffers a lot! I have to wait for 5mins+ for a 3mins video.
Anyone had success with muktitasking youtube app and other app?? I dont actually mind if youtube app could be left behind, but everytime i left it to another app. All the buffer's gone and video buffer was resetted to zero!
Same here...
I've got the same issue, but it only happens sometimes. I've noticed this happens more often when I pause a video, rewind, or when I'm watching a particularly long video (50 min or so). I doubt it's a problem with my network because my PC can stream the video just fine.
Same here, very annoying!
None of the preinstalled software appears to display updates, and I want to update the YouTube player. However, I have no way of knowing if the YouTube app that comes on the 4D is custom made for it or not, and thus am worried if updating it will result in loss if 3D YouTube playback or it not running on my phone's resolution.
While I'm at it... I noticed that despite the EVO 3D having a 16:9 aspect, YouTube videos.which are 720 or 1080 are cut off from the sides in 3D mode. Is there anything I can smdo about this?
Thanks
Yes, updating to the new YouTube version will still play in 3D. I've tested it, and it works fine.
Yup ^^^

Ok, this is getting ridiculous. 3D videos play fine horizontally but are cut off extremely from the top and bottom, almost half my screen is blank!
Take this video for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U0ZDjnQiXQ
If I play it through YouTube it is heavily cut off from the top and bottom, half my screen is blank. If i play the mp4 file I downloaded from that very same link using flashgot on my pc it plays perfectly and in fullscreen.
I can't find any sort of zoom or crop settings to change this.

i know it has been asked before, but is anyone working on an hbo app? I can go to the website to watch, but it is so choppy. My wife's ipad has the app and its awesome. I have the app on my atrix phone and its awesome. My galaxy tab...not so much using the browser.

What sort of internet connection do you have on each? 3G, wifi, 4G?
I use dolphin for pad and just use the website. Once a video loads up and plays for a minute it starts to freeze or looks choppy. But I waited it out once and after a minute or so it plays just fine. Just have to wait out that initial freeze of video, only takes a minute or so.
Would love an app though. Maybe with ICS.

i will have to try dolphin. I am using hbogo on my wifi at the house. I have comcast high speed internet. i have no problem streaming on my computer. I have no problem with my wifes ipad using the app. I watched a whole episode of band of brothers using the stock browser and it is really choppy.
It will have moments of being really good, but then it will change resolution and stutter. The video wont keep up with the audio. It makes it very difficult to watch.
Hello, recently (like android 4.2) youtube has decided to stop buffering videos whenever it feels like it, which means the video just hangs when it gets there with the little buffer wheel spinning. Sometimes it will continue to load the video after it stops, but most of the time it just locks up the whole app and you have to force close it and re-launch it. I have tried clearing app cache and data and what not, but nothing has helped. I even tried turning off wifi optimization, but that didn't help either. I thought that maybe it was my ISP, but the same videos in the browser play just fine with no buffering at all. It seems to do this regardless of the length of the video. I get about 30mbps down and 5.5up when I run speedtest on my tablet, so I don't think it's the connection that's causing the issue. I should also mention that this happens regardless of quality. It will load relatively quickly to a certain point, then just never buffer again. I fear the only way to resolve this issue will be a factory reset.
This Reddit thread solved my YouTube issues. I have fios, fyi.

I get this! All started when I upgraded to android 4.3! Its highly annoying, and the only way. I have found to fix it is to kill the YouTube app, find the video and place you where at, and then go from there
I also had this issue before the YouTube app was recently updated
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4
I'm having the exact same issue! I might get it to play one video and the it buffers constantly. Anybody else have this issue? I'm running stock 4.3 uprooted. YouTube works fine on my s4 and laptop, but hangs on the Nexus 10!

Can also confirm on Nexus 10.

My devices:

Nook Tablet - CM10.1
Same problem here.
You don't have to force close youtube by the way, simply pressing the home button and going back to youtube afterwards does the job for me as well.
I hope they will fix that issue soon
This sucks so bad! I just got this awesome nexus 10 and I literally cat go 5 seconds without buffer. Do I have a bad unit? How do I fix this? I can surf the web just fine so it isn't my wifi to the nexus 10.

Try an app called "Viral' from the playstore. I started using it as it can play YouTube music videos in the background while I'm using some other app. Recently I've been having issues with the default YouTube app and discovered that Viral did not have those issues. It may be worth giving it a try. I'm using a 4.4 custom ROM linked in my signature so your mileage may vary.
The issue I'm having is YouTube stops half way through a video and simply will not continue playing that video from the stop point, even after a reboot. I can play another video but it too stops half way or so in.
The YouTube app isn't NEARLY as good as it should, I'm still enraged and disgusted about the fact that the YouTube app on iPad is so MUCH better than the Android one, it has gestures to let you toggle full screen , it has pull down to refresh on lists (like the pull down to refresh on the gmail app), if you exit the app and come back, the video you were playing doesn't have to be rebuffered again (it keeps a few seconds buffered so you can watch the video quickly) AND worst of all, the iOS app lets YOU choose the resolution of your stream, what you get isn't an HD "on" and "off" toggle, you get proper choosing, like on the website, you get to choose between 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p AND 1080p, HD on our app is 720p, not 1080p, actually Google disabled the option from all android apps.
After that update I lost a lot of faith in Google, no wonder the iPad has so many more high quality apps, if you want devs to take you seriously, then YOU should give proper support to your devices, 1080p streams should have been available ever since our N10 was released, this **** is just unacceptable.
Thanks @3DSammy for the tip about the Viral app. :highfive:
Well, I figured out the issue, but not a fix. I think it's tied to comcast's router. I set up an old linksys with a broadcomm wireless unit as a repeater and I haven't had a single issue since. Numerous router resets and devices restores did nothing. It doesn't make any sense though because it only happens with the YouTube app, but same settings and everything I was able to watch a video completely on my nexus 10 on the repeater that I could not get through on comcast's router/modem(Aaris unit). It's strange though because my repeater connects wirelessly to my comcast router, so it goes nexus 10 to linksys repeater to comcast's router. It could be a security issue I guess, but I didn't look into it.
