I keep having issues with music apps. I just cleared media storage 2 days ago and everything was cool....until I rebooted. Google music will not recognize music on ext SD. Stock music player will however every time I reboot it adds multiples of same song.
I really don't want to put my music on internal SD. Any suggestions that will allow music on emmc to play and not multiply on reboot.

It's an ics problem. I had same problem with Google music on different ics roms. I used to mount and unmount external card to make it work. Here is another possible solution..

(Solved) My music from emmc (ext SD) won't play on Google music app, it says can not play selected. I know the music is there because I can go through root browser and play mp3 file.
The music will play on my stock player (Gummy ICS), but it shows multiples of every song (8). I deleted cache, data from apps and reboot, no change. I pulled my ext SD card out of phone and put it on my computer but it will not allow me to view the files?????
Any ideas??? Help

Delete data in media storage and reboot.
Deleting lost. Dir in ext sd may get rid of multiples.
Ics media storage very buggy
If you have more issues
If you don't stream from Google Music I would recommend using power amp (better faster scanning) instead and getting rid of media provider.

Deleting media storage data got rid of multiples and fixed the Google music. I split my music half int half ext and it seems to only play music from internal SD which sucks!
Edit: I guess I didn't give it enough time, its reading and playing ext now. Thanks

Yeah, media storage takes quite a bit of time.
But it is buggy for me. It will sometimes randomly clear itselft slowly and re index. drains battery.
Also For me it would not find music on external sd after reboot.
which is why i just use poweramp but hopefully you dont run into any of the above.
All the above, LOL, plus every audio file, and I mean every, is now loading to Google music. I am getting audio from emmc (ext SD)
It also loading every image on phone to gallery. Its all good though, I'll clean up later. At least for now I can listen to my music.
Thanks a lot!

I need help and this has been driving me nuts for the past hour of two. I placed 2 new music albums to my internal SD card (/storage/sdcard0/Music) and for some reason my music player cannot detect them. What I did is I checked the entire Music folder for any .nomedia but there is none. I downloaded a SD scan app and still the same.
The last resort i did is i deleted everything from my music folder and transferred everything again from PC to the S3. Now after doing that, the new albums appeared BUT one of the older albums is not showing! I checked the folder via Root Explorer and MyFiles and the album and songs are in my internal SD card. Like I said in my first statement, these albums/songs are located in just one folder.
Same result if I use the stock music app or a third party app like N7.
I am now frustrated and lost
I am currently using LI8.
Try clearing data in "MediaScanner" in the applications manager, and then rebooting. Give it a little while as it can take a few minutes to scan the entire phone.

Try putting the music somewhere else on your SD, before deleting caches and data... If that doesn't work, you can always just delete the cache of your music player, that usually works, but try not to delete the Media Scanner's Cache, that means it will take longer to boot and get to the launcher...
If you want, you could also just download Google Play Music, it's better than Samsung's Music player (Because Music Player leaves a second out of the music..) and Play Music is much smoother than Sammy's..
Try one of those and if it still doesn't work, do the Media Scanner Cache.
Anyways, hope I could help you!
You can also decrease the scanning times by using the SD watcher mod here:

Thanks! I'll try all the options provided and will let everyone know the results.

I have same problem with stock mp3 player, it can't play mp3 from my external sdcard.
Rescan your files by starting media scanner again.
《swagged from aokp》
Above fails TRY MP3 in Media folder Video in Video folder on EXT SD card .

It didn't help for me, in fact on the same album some tracks are recognized as mp3 and some not... perhaps file corruption I'll dig in.

Same issue
Seems I'm having the exact same issue on XXDLJ4.
But for me it doesn't even matter where i put them, I've got a folder with ~520 songs and stock player only shows ~300.
I tried alot of things:
- Placing media on internal/external storage.
- Clearing Media Storage cache
- Reuploading the entire folder from my pc
- RescanMedia root (disabled mediascanner)
- Dividing the music into smaller bits/folders
- Wiping and reflashing multiple times
- Cm10 nigtly has the same issue for me
So far nothing has worked.. The only workaround so far is using 3rd party apps..
Wipe EXT SD card format via phone .
Make folders copy one file to folder if it is now seen copy the rest .

Just tried it out (forgot to mention I already tried reformatting).
But still no consistent pickup from the mediascanner.
Tried the copy-back with a folder with 33 mp3's first, only 4 showed (Both on Sammy and CM10).
Then tried it with a folder with 41 pictures, only 12 showed on Sammy and ~20 on CM10.
Any more suggestions?

Sorry, didnt have time to read the whole thread, have you tried creating a folder on the route of the SD card called "MUSIC", that usally works.
Also check there isnt a file called "nomedia" in the route of the SD too.
plus - after you reformat just put the MUSIC on first before you copy everything else back, let it scan and then copy your other Folders back, this can also help.
any updates from the OP?
Yeah I did both.
Reformatting didn't solve anything. Same songs showed as before after recopy.
But while playing around with another rom (CM) i discovered something..
Seems that half my music is faulty mp3 files. Searched about the issue with Tubemate, and seems as it's common issue with some players. (Change in Sammy music app in JB maybe?)
It doenst convert to mp3 but saves the audio part to mp3. Must have been a bug in an older Tubemate version. Cause when i redownload the faulty song with the latest version it immediatly shows in the Sammy Music app.
When i try playing them on CM the faulty mp3's just stay at 0:00. So i went and tried a few mp3 checkers, afraid they report the same nr of correct/uncorrect as my Sammy music app shows.

To follow up, i recently switched to a s4 and the problem persist (inserted old sdcard).
Must be the faulty mp3 story.

I have lots of music on my micro sd card that the music players won't recognize. It will recognize some of the album's in my music folder but not all of them. The music is in the current playable format, I can even explore to the folders and play each individual song on every player I have and it will play fine, it just won't display all the songs together. I've tried re-scan media apps, deleting all "nomedia" files, clearing all music player caches, all with no success. Can someone please help me? My note 2 is rooted but that's it, no roms or anything, just root privileges so that I can do backups with Titanium Backup.

The media scanner sounds like it's confused for some reason, try clearing data in Settings->Applications->All->Media Storage
I've had people tell me to clear the music player data in the past and it never worked. I've never tried clearing media storage data. I cleared data and now all my music is displayed as it should be! I really appreciate it, I've struggled with this issue as far back as when i had my Galaxy S3 and never figured it out. Many props

Have you tried a different player, to see if the same thing happens?

" I cleared data and now all my music is displayed as it should be!"
Looks like it was fixed.
It did fix that problem but another appeared in its place. Now my music player is saying they're are 2 of every song. Every duplicate song that appears has the same exact file path. In essence, there is really only one song but the player is being two paths to the same song. I tried clearing my media storage again but to no avail.

Install another player. You shouldn't have to jump through these hoops to get it to work.
Or do this for your player:
Clear the data for your player like you did, then uninstall. While probably not necessary, reboot. Then reinstall and you should be good to go. If not then try a different player.
Note 2 - Nexus 7 - Charge - Player 5.0 - Fascinate
Read twice, flash once
I know this is not a new issue by any means and I've tried to search for a definitive answer.
Using what I thought were certain ROMs the phone cannot find certain mp3 files on the external SD.
This has seemed to be cured by flashing a different ROM so so far so good.
I've been running revolt 4.4 and transferred a new album via PC USB to the phone yesterday. Poweramp picked up immediately as usual but Google play music and amazon mp3 didn't. So triggered media scanner manually to no avail. I tried clearing the media storage cache and data as I've often read but on any ROM this has never rebuilt for me...ever.
I ran a nandroid of xtreme v8 which has been perfect. Guess what ? New album in its folder in Music on the external SD card but the phone will not pick up. Any clues anyone . please ?
