[Q] What is causing process.gapps to stop? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

For the life of me, I cannot figure out what is causing com.google.process.gapps to stop. I have narrowed it down to it being triggered when it syncs internet data through Accounts and Sync.

I had this issue when i first got my phone; I cleared data in google framework (settings, apps, all)
I also had to clear data in the browser as that would FC gapps every time I used it.

Ok i found out how he did it. You will have to go into the browser settings and clear cache, cookies, passwords etc. Then u have to go to settings - application manager and click on All. Then scroll down to google services framework. Click on it and then clear data. I rebooted afterwords for good measure. I was able to sync internet sucessfully without a force close. But i think this issue is being caused by some random setting that we are setting. If anyone finds out the source of this issue, please post.

The phones don't ship with google processes failing so what are you guys doing to the phone? If you have rooted the phone and tinkered with roms you have to flash the rom then flash the most updated gapps package for your phone or you will get force closes.
Also, you can fix force closing of google processes by booting into CWR and clearing dalvik cache as this forces ICS to rebuild symlinks and other databases for your apks....

My current rom and config is shown in my signature. I am thinking that it starts force closing when i start making changes to default settings in settings menus relating to browser/internet because if I uncheck sync internet from accounts and sync, it will not crash anymore. But when I recheck it, it crashes upon sync. But again, i am not sure which exact setting is causing it. That's all I am doing. I will try clearing dalvik cache and see if it persists. Also, another issue is that i am using TiBackup and freezing google movies and books. When I reboot the phone, they magically re-appear.

It did this error for me right out of the box once I synced my gmail account. Maybe it's something held over from some other phone that I've had?

ok... The plot thickens. lol did you restore ANY google apps using Titanium backup? if you did thats a big no no. Factory reset will probably set you right up. You can also reset dalvik cache as well.

Interesting... you may have some google app settings that are interfereing with ICS from other gingerbread or ICS roms... try factory resetting and then uncheck anything that says restore apps or account settings when setting up your phone and that should eliminate the issue. Report back as I am really curious

No i did not restore gapps with tb. When i do a restore, i do restore missing apps. Being that gapps are preinstalled, it would not restore using this option. I wiped dalvik cache as advised above. Then made changes to browser default settings and it hasnt fc yet.

Bump. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Update: Wiping dalvik cache appears to have permanently solved the problem. However, it still remains a mystery as to what actually caused this.

I disabled "sync internet" in my Google and Samsung accounts and the gapps problem is gone. I don't even know what sync Internet does but my guess is that was the problem.

As i stated in one of my first posts...that i figured out that sync internet triggers the crash. What sync internet does is it syncs favorites and browser settings. I use chrome on my pc, browser on tablet and browser on my phone and sync my favorites across all three.

my Apps in Apps Drawer do not save the order after a restart?
wat could that be?
If you edit the app order in TW, you need to SAVE the changes, as I recall.
i know, i do, but after a restart its not saved...
Got this too, very annoying. I got like 30 apps in a map and I have to move all of them back into it.. not sure what can cause this. Didn't happen on android 2.3.3
It happens because you did not clear data after flashing. Clear data of the TWLauncher under manage applications in the settings and it will be fixed.

Clearing data will wipe it back to how it looked when it was first bought surely!? That won't help with this will it? Lol

com.google.process.gapps has stopped?

I got my AT&T galaxy S3 in the 22nd and every once in a while I'm getting this pop up. Anybody know why that would be happening?
Aside from the pop up nothing else seems to happen, the app I'm in doesn't crash, the phone doesn't bog down or anything.

Just found this on another website.
"the process named "google.process.gapps" is for Google Contacts Sync. You can go to Settings-->Accounts & sync and disable sync for contacts. That should halt the sync app crashes.
To fix the underlying problem may require system updates, clearing data, factory data reset, etc. ...depending on what version of the OS you are running, and what other symptoms are."

Thank you! This has been driving me crazy. Contacts didn't work for me, but I unchecked everything and incrementally added more, hitting sync after each check, and found that "sync internet" was killing it for me.
I'm not sure what this syncs really, but it doesn't sound too important. Much prefer my non-crashing phone.
Thanks again!
I had the exact same issue. "Sync Internet" was the cause. If I disable and then re-enable it, it crashes the app immediately.. Turned that off and it seems to be behaving much better..

Also, you need to boot into CWR and wipe dalvik cache if your phone is rooted. :good:
Sync Internet is the culprit

I agree with jvoisin. After experimenting several times with Sync options, the one that always caused the com.google.process.gapps error was "Sync Internet", disabling it cleared the issue for me.
Fix for those who like 'internet sync'
I had this issue as well - But I personally like to have my internet bookmarks etc sync with my device.
I can't remember where I read this fix: but all you need to do is go to settings->applications manager-> all -> internet -> Clear Data.
Open up your browser again, and it will re-log you in on your google account and sync internet correctly.
Hope this helps.

[Help!] Restoring from Titanium Backup breaks some GCM push notifications

As the title states, I was wondering if anyone out there happens to know why restoring an app+data from Titanium Backup after a Factory Reset causes Push Messages (GCM I believe) to stop working. It seems fairly obvious that when restoring an app+app data from a previous installation, they get confused and the push messages aren't being delivered to the right place.
So far the only solution that I've found to the problem is to wipe the app's data, and restart from scratch.
I've done a lot of Google searching, and I have seen that there are a handful of other people who have had this same problem, but I have yet to see anyone come up with a working solution, though there have been a few things I've tried. This is my normal procedure I do when I upgrade/flash a new rom:
Code:
-Backup with Titanium Backup
-Backup with GO Backup
-Nandroid with TWRP
-Factory Reset
-Flash ROM
-Wipe Cache/Dalvik
-Boot
-Sign into Google Account
-Install Titanium Backup
-Restore previous Android ID
-Reboot
-Use Titanium Backup to restore Apps+AppData, as well as some system settings
-Reboot
At this point, some of my GCM push notifications don't work. The only way I can get them to work again is to wipe the app's data and start from scratch. I have tried the following things, none of which worked, but they might provide helpful information.
Code:
-Wiped the app data, restored the app data by itself again.
-Uninstalled the app, installed from Google Play, restored app data.
-Used Application Manager to disable notifications, then re-enabled.
-Went into the app's settings to disable notifications, then re-enabled.
-Cleared data on Google Services Framework
-Removed Google Account, cleared data on Google Services Framework, rebooted.
[B] (This actually had an even worse side effect of re-breaking GCM push
notifications for all of the apps I had fixed by hand)[/B]
At this point I'm at a loss, I'm not sure what else to try. It kind of looks like the Google Account/GSF is related to GCM. I don't remember exactly, but I think I tried restoring the previous GSF App+Data on my most recent flash, and it still didn't work.
Anyways, I'm kind of rambling, if anyone is able to provide any insight or help, it would be greatly appreciated!
----------------------------------------------------------
In case anyone is interested, here's some lists of the affected/unaffected apps.
It DOES affect the following:
Code:
Accuweather
American Express
Bejeweled
CBS Sports
Chase
Facebook
Messenger (FB)
Reddit News
Waze
XDA app
It does NOT affect the following:
Code:
Gmail
Google Now
Hangouts
PushBullet
Yahoo! Mail
try to restore only data on titanium backup, not restore app&data
Don't forget to hit THANKS button
I've tried that way, but it didn't work either
Bump for a new day D:
Would love help on this, I have the exact same problem...
I've had this problem for a long, long time (a year or two). If there's a solution, I haven't seen it yet.
Glad that I am not the only one.
Add me to the annoyance list.
I can't figure out how to get SSG2 to notify me, and that's not an app I want to clear data on as it will lose my level saves.
Voxer also has this problem.
Interestingly enough, the Risk style game LandRule has a way to refresh the Google sync services and it works perfectly.
Multiplayer->Notifications->Having trouble...->Refresh Registration.
Very handy tool to have available, need to find a way to spread to other apps!
Try removing and re-adding your Google account. After trying a few things, this either fixed it for me, or was just coincidental timing.
I do see that you tried this... but do it without clearing GSF data.
So glad I found this!
I had been researching why Voxer lost GCM notifications, with no luck and getting frustrated. Eventually stumbled across this thread and problem solved. Back story: two days ago I flashed a factory image and restored user apps & data from TiB. Never would have guessed that any thing to do with GCM "breaking". But sure enough after reading this, I cleared data in Voxer and all is well.
God bless XDA for all the little things like this. Couldn't own a phone without it.
We could really use some type of GCM interface to relink or whatever, if that's possible. Maybe even TiB would be a great vehicle for that?
OK I'm confused. So this problem is not solved?
Solved my particular problem with Voxer by clearing data. Problem with it breaking to begin with not solved.

So, interesting update for folks in this thread.
My push notifications in SSG have finally been fixed with the latest update.
Now I don't know if it's because something in the update fixed it or because the act of updating from the Playstore re-synced with you/Google.
Will be interesting to check next time I flash a ROM and start from scratch. Will certainly be keeping an older version of the apk to update from if needed
Had the same issue. Lost all push notifications from Whatsapp and other gcm-enabled apps after flashing to CM11 and restoring apps+data with Titanium Backup. Finally tried using the Push Notifications Fixer (root version) app and all of a sudden, my Whatsapp notifications are coming in fine. Not sure if the app really fixed the issue or if it was just a coincidence..

Anybody else having luck with that app?
Doesn't do anything for me, tried activating service, changing to 5min and resetting to default but doesn't fix push notifications from Voxer, SSG2 or LandRule...
Anything I'm doing wrong?
I'm using the latest version of TiB and my push notifications never work after a restore. Ive been manually reinstalling any apps that send me notifications after trying everything else others in here have tried. Basically TiB is only saving my WiFis for me these days. Subscribed for a fix!
Has anyone tried backing up and restoring app data with nandroid backups and apps that handle them, instead of TiBu? OBackup, ROM Manager are a couple of apps I believe do this.
What I did is backup app+data but reinstalled from PlayStore and opened up app to where it asked you to login and then goto TiB and restored Data and it worked for me!
I wish best to luck to everyone!
Also having the same issue but I've restored so many apps that I don't know which ones, other than the obvious messengers and the like, use GCM and might have it broken. I did at least figure out that deleting the app data (or uninstalling/reinstalling from the Play Store in my case) fixes the problem on an app by app basis.
A thought occurred to me but I haven't tried it myself... Has anyone tried restoring an app while using SuperSU? I seem to recall Titanium prompting that normal SU isn't very good and should be changed for optimal results but I've always ignored it. Maybe it's affecting that part of the restore.
---------- Post added at 02:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:26 PM ----------
Tested my own theory with Voxer and it didn't help.
for me "Push Notifications Fixer" didn't resolve the problem with Whatsapp and UppTalk. To re-enable notifications and not lose data I do this:
1) delete AppData
2) open the App
3) login
4) restore AppData
like badboytw suggested above...

[Q] Constant App Crashing

Hey I tried looking for an answer to this and couldn't really find one
My phone consistently gives me the "unfortunately the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped" and a bunch of different variants of that with different processes or apps.
I have tried wiping the cache and disabling apps but honestly WTF
I can't figure out why it does this. This happened to be before and a factory reset fixed the issue but this time it seems to be an issue with one of the basic apps I'm installing.
I don't know if anyone has run into this and has some guidance.
Would a fresh stock firmware solve this?
when in doubt, open the settings/apps and clear the cashe of the offending app.

I have cleared the cache of every app and it just doesn't stop. It's the most frustrating thing I've dealt with.
May just buy a new phone at this point....
if it is that bad then reset your phone to factory defaults, also make sure to check the settings so it doesn't automatically install all of your old Apps, so you can install them one at a time to see which one is causing it.

How do I fix the issue once I figure out what app is causing it? Or do I just forever say farewell to the app in question?

Severely Delayed Notifications

Hi, I have a Pixel XL on Verizon running the latest stock firmware (v7.1.2). I have a problem with my notifications taking hours or sometimes over a day to show. This includes apps like Gmail, Outlook, Instagram, Slack, and even things like Dominos. The issue is present regardless of my connection, whether I am on Wifi or LTE makes no difference.
I've read other posts and disabled the battery saving options for these apps, but the problem is still there.
Is there something I can reset or clear a cache, or anything to fix the notification system?

I cleared the cache for all apps by going to Settings > Storage > Cached Data and that resolved the problem for about a week. Now the problem is back and I'll need to clear it again soon.

Thank you for answer. In my case it didn't worked. I tried clear cache and dalvik cache from TWRP. Also didn't worked. I removed the also the google account, unsuccessfully too.
