TWRP Recovery
Follow the steps on either one of these threads in order to re-install a custom recovery. From there just follow the thread of any given Rom you want to install (especially steps for if you are S-ON or S-Off) and you will have root that way, Most, if not all Custom ROMs have root. Goodluck Buddy
if u still have root issues after trying the ones in recovery, try going to chainsdd website and get the flashable zip and that should work. i think all you will need is the binary file if you have the apk already

Ok guys heres the deal....i recently got a samsung fascinate from my sister cause I couldnt mod my inc any more. ok so....i got the phone rooted. i have su perm. i downloaded rom manager and installed it. now heres my problem. i can preform a backup no problem, but when i go to restore that backup it boots into clockwordmod and begins and then get an error about erasing boot img. or something like that. can tell exactly if i get some help from this. also cant install custom roms like i can with my incredible. i know it can be done cause i see roms and all for this phone. can someone please please help me.
Thats because cwm3 will not perform nandroid restores on stock roms. You need to flash cwm 2.5.1.x red recovery. Its the best recovery imo for any bml(touchwiz) rom. Go over to my guide in general section and you cand find cwm 2.5 in section 2&5. Oh and ditch rom manager...manually install cwm via odin!
If you're coming from an incredible, also keep in mind you don't have to be rooted to flash roms either, you just have to have a custom recovery. There aren't really any modifications like rooting procedures, S-OFF, etc, required for rom flashing, just odin a recovery and flash your selected rom.
Maybe I'm wrong on this but I don't see why people have trouble with root access on a rom. I have just flashed the rom I want be it stock or otherwise and went into recovery and flashed the superuser zip and have root. Am I over simplifying this or is there something I don't get? From my experience if you have a non stock recovery you can get root. Does this not work on all roms?
Yuuuuup
I rooted manually following ZedoMax's method here http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-4g-l...tc-evo-4g-lte-unlock-bootloadertwrp-recovery/ and everything was going great until i had to flash the CWM file. it said failed. Im not sure how to fix it. I am on hboot 1.19. is there maybe an updated file that i need to download?
If you flash a rooted rom you don't need to flash CWM root, that is just to enable root in stock. If you want to keep a mostly stock rom you can the flash stock with goodies package in Android development

so i just made a backup. so all i have to do is flash a rom that has supersu and im good?
Yep, flash the kernel separately in fastboot
So after scearching thousands of threads i understand everything about kernel, custom roms, stock roms.
Im trying to get all together like a puzzle.
Ony thing i want to know but can't find the answer anywhere on the internet.
I have custom recovery TWRP with root.
Is it possible to temporary unroot the device with OTA rootkeeper app, flash stock recovery and than restore root back with the app.
So i can download future update flawless.
Thanks!
Edit ----------------------------------
Just flashed stock recovery and kept root, no any rootkeep apps needed for this.
Basically i have a Hox+ with:
Stock rom
Stock recovery
Unlocked bootloader
Stock kernel
And root
Win!
Hello, I am just browsing the I717 posts here, being familiar with android root and CWM, I can not seem to find much with root and CWM on the boards here. I see a lot of root, that installs TWRP a lot but I am looking to root and have CWM. Perhaps I missed it, however wanted to ask. Thank you.
Is this the most recent ?

That root method seems to install TWRP, I just want ROOT by itself so perhaps I can install CWM ?
To root this phone you have to flash a kernel that also installs CWR. The only way I can see to get root only without installing a recovery is put the phone in download mode and use odin to flash a rooted rom. But I've never seem an odin version of a rooted rom.
Why don't you want TWRP? Its way better than CWR.

Latest CWM is 6.0.4.3
You do not need to install a custom kernel to root your phone. Use Odin to install CWM and then use CWM recovery to install a version of superuser.
Easiest method I know is here: Works for jellybean also.
