can anyone help? my pc is no longer recognising the phone when it's connected by usb.
i just want to be able to add/remove some music files and backup my photos, but the pc just says "searching phone".
i've tried manually deleting some music using astro, which has messed thigns up even further, because the music files are gone, but the music player app still thinks they're there
i think im going to do a total restore if i can get the thing connetced so that i can backup my photos :S
frustrating...i bought this phone because i had so many issues with my old htc, and now i'm getting issues again already with this phone
when i first got it a couple of weeks ago it was flawless, smooth, eerthing was great, except battery.....but already things are going wrong
so, after much research, i have managed to get the pc to recognise the phone to an extent by clearing data on mtpapp
problem is, even with a virtually empty phone, it's taking around 20 minutes after connection before the internal storage is recognised.
and even then, it is basically inaccessible still
i can "see" all the files in explorer, but as soon as i go to copy things to or from the phone, it gets part way through the process then freezes up completely so that i need to restart windows explorer
is there no way to make the phone have a siple drag and drop interface that actually works? christ, even my wildfire s was easier than this!

So let's start off saying I messed up bad. REALLY BAD. I'm not the one who is braindead, by the way. It's my vibrant.

I have an important recording in one of the folders in my internal data that I would be willing to go very far to restore. The recording would be impossible to reproduce, even under the same circumstances and people involved.
I've been able to boot up the phone (supposedly) because I hear the hardware battery charging sound. Only two of the indicator lights on the bottom light up. The touchscreen seems to be unresponsive, but I could be wrong because the sounds for the phone were disabled before the accident. "HEY MAN YOU SHOULD HAVE USED A CASE" - I did have a case on.
Anyway, when I connected it to the desktop (drivers already installed, done this dozens of times) it said unknown device. I tried other USB ports, still got nothing. I took it to the laptop, same issue. Tried to force install the drivers, that didn't work either. The battery is fully charged. I can restart the phone and the boot times combined with indicator lights at the bottom tell me the phone is "working"
I have Droid Explorer installed, the program I usually use to access the file system. It doesn't find any devices connected. Not sure about ADB. I read somewhere on the forums that you can get into recovery mode by pressing HOME+POWER+VOL UP. I'm not sure if the home button works but I tried this with no luck.
"HEY MAN WHY DON'T YOU BACKUP" - I do. On the first of every month. It hasn't been the first of November, therefore I don't have this backup.
Tell me my friends, is this phone to be euthanized? I would also preferably not want to buy a new screen. Any sort of help is appreciated.
Hey question, is the recording you want on the SD card or the internal memory of the phone, reason I ask is if its on the SD card, you can pull that out, mount it on your lappy or whatever and use the proper SW to explore the card, and retrieve your audio file you want, otherwise, if not then yes you still need a way to overcome the detection of phone to access the two drives for the internal memory of the phone, so you can retrieve your audio file. Yes drivers are the first thing that comes to my mind, however if the phone was being detected prior to damaging it then IDK why that would change unless there is a HW issue from the trauma of dropping it, was the phone detected prior to dropping it with 0 defects and since you damaged it that functionality is no longer working???? I mean your confident its fully booting up, and technically the phones functional except the screen is hosed, do I have this scenario right, and as such is the reason why you cant navigate to the folder you need in order to retrieve your file????
Look you also gotta find a way to see what your doing with the phone so you can get it into mass storage mode, then you'll be able to extract the audio and whatever files you want, BTW replacing the glass isn't that bad, unless your not confidant about doing fragile mechanical work on phones!! And replacing the capacitive glass face would restore the phone to an operable state where you could once again be interactive with it.
Of course if the recording was on the external SD card I wouldn't have a problem with it. It looks like the trauma messed up the hardware, but I can't be sure anymore. Of course If I fix the screen and connect to wifi I can recover it but a screen would cost me another $150 and I'm not sure if that's such a good idea. If only I knew someone else with the same phone, then I could borrow their screen temporarily!
I sort of know exactly everything that you're saying, it's just that there's no solution to the problem so I'll have to either get an expert to recover my files or buy a new screen. Looks like I will need quotes on this.
I have a phone with a cracked screen that still works. That screen with your mobo could be used to at least get a display and pull the files you need. PM me, and I'm sure we can work something out.

I literally had this same problem. I'll tell you what I did. You need to set up adb on your computer. There are plenty of instructional videos on that. Once you have adb setup for sure, then connect your usb and power the phone on. You should hear your phone recognize your device. Open up cmd on your pc and type in adb devices. You should see your phone listed. Now download a program called "Android commander" it's for windows. Android commander uses adb features to see, copy, erase, and basically manipulate all the media on your device without being able to see your screen or enable mass storage. I used this trick to pull pictures of my daughter being born off my vibrant before sending it back to Tmobile for my replacement. I also was able to delete su and any traces of being rooted or having custom roms on my device thus avoiding my warranty being voided. Hope this helps. If you need further help, feel free to add me on google talk. I'm happy to help. I know how I felt when this happened to me. [email protected]

Hi everybody,
I am currently running stock, and, surprise surprise, have run into a problem. My SD card seems to work fine, I can pop it into my computer via an adapter and use it just like a USB stick. It doesn't have any issues on my phone, either.
Trying to access it from my computer while it is in my phone, however, is another ballgame. With it in camera or media mode, it can read the file structure fine, but it has a really hard time with files. Moving PDFs or images to or from the device is spotty and frustrating - many times it just says the folder is busy, or it freezes, or stops reading files and says the images are broken (they are not).
I don't get why this is happening, since all of the hardware seems to be fine. Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Andrew
Hi
I have a broken Galaxy 3 phone where the screen suddenly stopped functioning with a total blackout so I can't use the phone at all. There is no problem getting the phone fixed within a couple of days but the problem is I want to save all my messages, contacts and other data, especially one conversation text message thread that has gone on for about a year, to my pc. I want the information to be able to be viewed independently on my computer like I read emails etc. and then I can store it on a portable hard drive by copy and paste. Samsung kies doesn't seem to allow for this. I can back up the phone apparently but the info can only be read by another similar phone so it is restricting how you see your own information. I want the information on my computer without the need of another similar phone because what if I decide to buy a totally different phone that has software that's not compatible. The shop representing Samsung who will fix the phone said that everything gets wiped and they won't even have Kies on their computers because they think its unstable software. Ideally it would be great if there was some kind of software for my computer that enabled it to read all the info on the phone as if the phone was a flash drive connected by USB and then I could simply copy and paste across from phone to computer. The phone is recognised by the computer through the USB but obviously it can't read inside the folders on the phone which just show as empty. Anybody know of anything to get the results I want? Thanks.
Hi there,
Try this..
Good luck!
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
Click to collapse

Sorry I tried to use these but I really don't know what I'm supposed to do. Both suggestions are completely foreign to me.
Every time I connect my phone to my computer via USB even after I've disconnected my phone, the following 2 things happen (that I can tell): My ringtone goes back to "Default" (i'm using a custom one which is saved on the SD memory) and my music playlist (the only one i have) goes empty. No music file is missing, they're just removed from the playlist, and they, too, are on my SD memory.
What can i do to fix or circumvent the issue?
The problem is not that it happens while the phone is hooked on the computer, but that it persists AFTER i disconnect it. In other words, after disconnecting the phone, i have to manually rebuild my playlists and change the ringtone again. Is there a way for me to transfer data between PC and phone without having to "reconfigure" the phone after the process? Or better yet a way to use the USB normally without the "reconfiguring" having to take place?
Hope you give me a rply masters
Thank you
Okay, urgency low, but curiosity high. I have an Alcatel Streak - please don't laugh, it was free - and I decided to try formatting the SD card as internal storage. Kind of an experiment to see how it would work. Played with it for a few months then left the country for a year & a half. Getting ready to return, so got out my Streak (which is still locked to Cricket, cheap & fast & easy) and ran into a memory problem. I should mention that it always seemed to have a problem shutting off. You could shut it off but come back a few days later and discover it was back on and your battery was almost dead. Probably not related but who knows.
Anyway, so it said it couldn't update because my memory was full. It took me to the app page. Oh well, so I uninstalled about 1.8 Gigs of apps, but the available storage never increased and the message kept coming on. Okay, so maybe a fresh start. I'll just take off all my stuff (not much) off and transfer it to my hard drive. I plugged it in but it never showed up in explorer. Not in Windows or Linux. Tried updating drivers, etc, but no luck. No problem, I'll just take the SD card out & plug it into my PC directly. But neither Windows nor Linux could see anything on the card, a result of formating it for internal storage from what I've read. Hmmm, okay, I'll use Bluetooth. Great, connected to one of my other phones no problem. Sent files and ... nothing. Couldn't send or receive anything via Bluetooth. Okay, try it with the computer. Still no luck, Windows or Linux. Okay let's try this WiFi Direct thing .... yeah you guessed it, nothing. Alright, I know, I'll share them to Google Drive! Ha! But the joke was on me. After only a few hundred megabytes transfered, an error. Phone storage is full, please clear out some space. Now Settings won't do anything but take me to that message. So... we need phone storage just to upload to Google Drive? Okay, maybe it stores everything in a temp folder first. A temp folder smartly located only in system storage which cannot be moved to SD or internal storage.
So, any ideas as to how to get any info off that phone? Nothing major so if it can't be done I'll live, but I'm very curious as to why nothing wants to come off that phone. Weird. I am out of ideas here.... Thanks for reading and any help you can provide.
PS. To clarify, on plugging it into the computer, usually my phones display a message, I can tap the notification and choose charging, transfer files, sync pictures, internet access, whatever. But that option never appears on the Alcatel Streak phone, it just charges. The cable and USB ports work fine as all other phones show up. If there are any other things I need to clarify, please just let me know, thanks!!
