So, I noticed a bit of odd behavior and wanted to double check with you all.
I had enough background processes running that ended up leaving less than 150mb of free RAM. Every time I hit the home button, Sense 4 would reload. I figured I would uninstall any programs (in this case Open Signal and switched from swype to the HTC keyboard) so that the phone would have more than 150mb RAM and voila, no more reloads.
Has anyone experienced this behavior under similar conditions?

I was having the same problem with my HTC one x so I got ride of some home screens and widgets I didn't check to see how much what ram was left I'll start paying attention though thanks for the info
I'm beginning to think Sense may be a resource hog. I was quite sure phones didn't need more than 1GB of RAM yet, but Sense is proving me wrong. When MikLatTE comes out, perhaps I'll root and unlock my phone. I know Mik's ROMs are always optimized while providing an enhanced stock experience.
sense sucks nut sacks. only gripe I have had with HTC products.
on a lighter note... apex=massive win and uses.......... omf..... 20 MB of ram. hmmm.

I don't know if I understood any of that....
Back when LauncherPro was the best launcher available, I used it. It eventually because too bloated and ran slowly on my 4G, but I still loved it for the scrolling dock and customizable home screens. The developer eventually decided to do a complete re-write, but never delivered. Rumors are he is still working on it, but I gave up hope about a year ago when he was about eight months in and didn't offer any updates.
I honestly don't have a problem with Sense. I wish the dock could scroll to give us more access to apps along the bottom of the screen, but I don't seem to run very many apps on my phone anyway.
I have 120mb free according to my task manager and get no reloads at all. I am running the stock with goodies rom.
And isn't unused ram wasted ram? I'd rather the phone use all it can even if it doesn't need it. It is unfortunate the processes the phone chooses to close when it does need more ram are not the best choices at times though, like the launcher.
I'm not even able to get under 150 mb lol. I'm trying. I'm playing music, have 2 browser windows, on the XDA app, checked Facebook and then checked twitter. I assume the phone is aggressively closing apps behind me? I have it set to only all 4 processes. Maybe that's it?

This thread motivated me to freeze some apps and free up some ram eg HTC launcher since I'm running nova launcher.
My launcher redraws have been a lot less frequent.

yeah i heard the 4 processes helps, but i tried that and it didn't make a difference. widgets and things that are always open in the background like widget locker do seem to make a significant difference on RAM usage. most of my reloads seemed to happen after checking facebook.

I think its a multitask issue with HTC one series phones. Although I have personally seen the galaxy s 3 fall below 150mb ram. But it doesn't have the reloading bug. I'm sure 1gb ram is enough.

Hello, I have been searching for app killer information. I see that some people don't think is necessary and some say it is. What's the verdict on this topic? Thx
Sent from my MB855 using XDA Premium App
dont use it, unless you know what your looking for. if you do use one look for one that displays processor cycles or how long the app uses the processor. if a rogue app is uses more than it should you kill it. other than that use. do not use them.
edit.
if an app uses excessive processor time, i just straight up delete it. unless i need it then i kill it.
At the Android BBQ, Cyanogen stated that there is absolutely no need for task killers. Granted this is the same thing he has been saying for some time now but misinformation is a hard thing to overcome.
I am sick of App killers, they may have had a place pre Froyo but any recent android build will not benefit from them. Most of the time quite the opposite of what is expected including but not limited to Higher battery drain, background services not syncing, or Force Close issues. In general if an android phone comes into the store I work at with a task killer it will leave with it uninstalled. If you need something to conserve battery I recommend adjusting your sync settings, brightness/timout, and installed apps settings. If you are running out of memory due to too many programs running you can either buy a new phone that has more memory or uninstall some of said programs.

Yes and No. A few years ago, 128Mb or even 512Mb on these phone were common. Yes it was nice to have 2Million apps on your phone and 1/2 of them running. It was easy to jam up your phone, so short of a reboot, an app killer was a nice tool.
This has 16Gb (Not Mb) and some space to play on the chip. I work in IT, been doing it for MANY years. Look at the size of these apps in Market Place. If you have THAT many apps, all running at the same time, You need a new phone when available.
BTW: Photon comes with Task Manager out the box, it willdo the same thing.
Just my $0.02!
Thx for the info.. I currently do not have one installed. I never have problems with my photon. Just wondering if it was something I needed.

My point is that it is an app that adds no value to the device.
An example would be a customer with an LG Optimus (140 MB of onboard memory) that has installed every version of angry birds and now wonders why their phone is slow and unresponsive. A task killer will not fix this, they either need to remove some apps or buy a phone that better suits their needs.
That being said I'm not really worried about the photon running out of memory (either the 3GB allocated to app storage or the 1GB of RAM) I'm not saying it's impossible but for the average user, heck even the average power user it is highly unlikely.
So people still don't realize this is Linux. Unused ram is useless ram. Fill it to the brim, it's there to be used 100%.

memory is different from ram. i have 1.6 gigs of apps(240) my phone doesnt run slow at all. i had 200 plus on my galaxy s and my g1(apps2sd). never slowed down any of my phones as long as you dont download poorly coded apps or use 500 widgets/app killers/bad live wallpapers/crappy home replacements. you can use as much storage as you want and never slow down the phone. its the active apps that are running that slow down the phone, not the inactive ones simply stored in memory for quick access. when android needs memory it kills off inactive apps. simple.

Good choice! On both phone and not needing this!
I have my phone and dont have any issues with it. I installed an advanced task killer and thats when I started having problems once I uninstalled it I was good. No problems whats so ever. Another thing I noticed is with the extra task killer when would dock my photon into the hdmi station I would get low memory pop ups since I uninstalled it no more low memory popups.

I noticed while I was using the supercharger script that it recommended to use option 8 which is 768hp and not option 9 1000hp. I've read some threads before about people asking why in the task manager it only shows we have 733mb of ram on the phone and that its supposed to have 1gb. I know the system takes up a lot of ram and that's why it shows that. So my question is, does touch wiz use up that much ram? I thought tw was a "light" overlay. I remember when I had a rezound the recommendation for the supercharger script was 1000hp. Sense is supposed to be a "heavy" overlay right? Could it actually be lighter than tw? When I had an inspire it said to use 768hp, the same as now with the Note. But the inspire is "last year's" tech. I would expect the Note to be up there with the Rezound. Maybe this is why we are seeing lag sometimes? ICS seems worse in the ram usage department (600-something in the task manager). It just seems to me that the system is using up an incredible amount of resources that I haven't seen happen on other phones even with sense on them. Whenever I use the script and it recommends 768 it makes me think something is wrong and that's why we have the lag that we do. Thoughts?

Free ram is wasted ram.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
no, touchwiz doesnt use up all that portion of ram. these reserved memory, as u mentioned already, is reserved for the system. for instance, your graphical display and other devices etc
i know nothing about the supercharger script, coz i don use that, but i can tell u touchwiz does eat more memory than other launchers. on the other hand, the huge memory usage in the galaxy note or android 2.3+ (esp 4.0+) devices is a result of the tasks triggered by the system like google mail service and the like, and thus slower operations due to limited free memory availability
may be i didnt get to the point, but hope this helps u understand more

Our phones do have extra features that those phones do not. I have no idea if this is right or not, but maybe the extra RAM usage comes from the system needing to recognize when we are using the S Pen at any given time. That would explain the difference between GSII and Note.

Ics uses more memory than GB. Thats why its only 624 mb of Ram free not to mention the S pen configuration loaded into the OS.

Actually, I cant find the post right now but a developer has already explained that the 250 MB that you are not seeing (750+250 = 1GB) is shared video memory being utilized by the GPU.
The resolution on the Note is significantly higher than most which is why it needs 250 MB dedicated for video alone.

Mine is lag free. I'm running Juggernaut AOKP currently, but I rarely saw lag on GB, and never on ICS. Some notes just seem to be more laggy than others. If you're within 30 days, go exchange it for another one, see if its any better. If not, it may be an rogue app, widget, or launcher that is causing it.

that just frees memory right? how does that actually speed the phone up though? because android automatically closes program and frees memory already doesnt it?
I'm running OnlyOne ICS ROM and have zero lag. Give this ROM a try. It is the smoothest ICS ROM I have flashed thus far.
Im running with Team Perfections objection. Zero lag.
It is my understanding that the caches aren't memory, but temporary files for applications that can cause problems. Wipe 'em first, Dalvik cache too.
Try v6 supercharger to null the lag. Rememberber in ics there is no custom kernel yet...

I returned my first Note due to the backlight bleed on the buttons (white version) and was shocked at how much better the second Note was. Originally I thought I had made a mistake in purchasing it. The phone was slowish and the SPen sucked. It would hesitate at everything that it did. I even did a wipe on it to no avail. The second phone brought a smile to my face. Still does!
The S3 is a nice phone and you wouldn't lose either way.

The phone isn't the issue...it's the software.
Just look at the size of the latest ICS leak. 1.1* gigs.
Then look at CM9-- 150 megabytes.
There you have it...950 megabytes of crap. Just a few crappy lines of code can bring a phone down to it's knees.
Not to mention, i've seen the fastest phones available brought down to their knees. If you have 9 pages of widgets, don't expect your phone to be blazing. It takes a lot more to run a widget than it does a 4x5 row of static icons. That's sooooo 1995.

this phone runs AMAZING with ICS, really.. better than my friends HTC one X Tegra 3 CPU. Wait until samsung drops the official ICS update. The only one ROM was AMAZING, however I got a lot of bugs that I could not live with.

All in all jelly bean is nicer looking and snappy when scrolling where it may not have been with ICS however I've tried 3 different roms now and am experiencing a system wide lag when performing basic transitions like going back in an app or clicking a link within it, even typing like I am right now it occasionally misses a beat then speeds back up. Its to the point where it takes almost 10 seconds to click on a link in facebook before the next action progresses. I would assume its the cpu or ram but not sure how to address the issue. Any help would be appreciated

Turns out it was a memory issue (obviousely). It seems inherent in the initial build for our device the ram management is simply not on par with how ICS handled it. I had less than 50mb free memory but you've got to consider that HTC sense has already been allocated its memory so it shouldn't lag the whole system. Hopefully the next update will address the issue...til then I ran v6 supercharger script and patched the framework for new minfrees.
There's a lot of sense related bloat in the stock ROM. If you're not interested in bloat, try cm10. Everything that matters works as of 1/16. Cm10.1 is fancy, camera will shape up when deck isn't sleeping. Just don't go for a cheap lazy king of cm, especially if it's one of 5 by the same winzipper, or if it crams 6 or 7 buzzword in the topic title like "Linaro optimized" or "battery boost." I dunno whatever.

It's the Galaxy S5 "Zoom" for anyone who doesn't already know.
Smaller screen, bigger camera.
Whatever happened to the S5 Prime?
The one that was supposed to be:
805 processor (64 bit)
QHD 5.2 screen
4GB Ram
Most of that would be icing on the cake, but the fact that the S5 stuck with 2GB RAM is really a big reason I'm not jumping on upgrading. Heavy multitasking with a number of apps running is just so sluggish with 2GB RAM.

hmm S5 2GB ram is getting the job done , I haven't found sluggish performance what so every in heavy multitasking & GS5 is smoother then Note 3 that holds 3GB.
The LG G2 with 2GB is a different story though , After kitkat update device performance became shot on many levels.
A great benchmark video found at ATT GS5 forums,

3gb isn't really required right now. Android apps are not that advance. Unused RAM is wasted RAM, AOSP always helps with the "sluggish" you speak of

Wish that was the case for me. Even with a full wipe and clean install after about a half a days worth of normal usage my phone constantly is hovering around the max in RAM. I'm constantly having to goto the RAM manager to clear memory, otherwise tasks start to really become hung up in the response time.
Even things like a google search will become so lagged that the working circle just keeps spinning. Once I go and clear memory the search is back to normal like you would expect.
Unfortunately, this solution has to be repeated about every half hour and it's just really a major annoyance that it seems to be in need of more ram as my resources constantly seemed to be pushed to their max.
So why is my phone so slow and not responsive unless I clear the RAM if unused RAM is wasted RAM?
Even with clearing it, the least it will go down to in terms of use is .96GB - and typically shoots right back up to 1.37, 1.42, or 1.44 GB is use within a matter of minutes? !

Like people above me said bloatware. Have you even rooted? Or disable apps running in the background? Your never going to win by constantly closing apps ever so often. Let me tell you a secret, they will keep restarting back up. Most users outside of xda won't notice this, meaning almost everyone who buys this phone. Since you come here, when Roms come by, get them!!
