It's the Galaxy S5 "Zoom" for anyone who doesn't already know.
Smaller screen, bigger camera.
Whatever happened to the S5 Prime?
The one that was supposed to be:
805 processor (64 bit)
QHD 5.2 screen
4GB Ram
Most of that would be icing on the cake, but the fact that the S5 stuck with 2GB RAM is really a big reason I'm not jumping on upgrading. Heavy multitasking with a number of apps running is just so sluggish with 2GB RAM.

hmm S5 2GB ram is getting the job done , I haven't found sluggish performance what so every in heavy multitasking & GS5 is smoother then Note 3 that holds 3GB.
The LG G2 with 2GB is a different story though , After kitkat update device performance became shot on many levels.

3gb isn't really required right now. Android apps are not that advance. Unused RAM is wasted RAM, AOSP always helps with the "sluggish" you speak of

Wish that was the case for me. Even with a full wipe and clean install after about a half a days worth of normal usage my phone constantly is hovering around the max in RAM. I'm constantly having to goto the RAM manager to clear memory, otherwise tasks start to really become hung up in the response time.
Even things like a google search will become so lagged that the working circle just keeps spinning. Once I go and clear memory the search is back to normal like you would expect.
Unfortunately, this solution has to be repeated about every half hour and it's just really a major annoyance that it seems to be in need of more ram as my resources constantly seemed to be pushed to their max.
So why is my phone so slow and not responsive unless I clear the RAM if unused RAM is wasted RAM?
Even with clearing it, the least it will go down to in terms of use is .96GB - and typically shoots right back up to 1.37, 1.42, or 1.44 GB is use within a matter of minutes? !

you probably got crapload of bloat running or messengers and stuff in the background

Like people above me said bloatware. Have you even rooted? Or disable apps running in the background? Your never going to win by constantly closing apps ever so often. Let me tell you a secret, they will keep restarting back up. Most users outside of xda won't notice this, meaning almost everyone who buys this phone. Since you come here, when Roms come by, get them!!

the atrix got 1gb ram right? after a reboot there is only around 570mb free ram...
after a few days without rebooting iam stuck around 440-480mb ram...
1st: where is my 1gb?

yea i know android needs some itself but is it 50% ??? i mean the LG optimus only got 512mb... in my case id have 0 left... something strange here?

Yes it has 1gb 200mb is reserved for the webtop and 800mb is for android
you might want to read up on how linux and android USE ram also. free ram is wasted ram

I read somewhere that you don't need a task killer. I have always used one to get back to like 500mb. Now you tell me unused ram is wasted ram. I installed autokiller after some advice and opened some games and stuff. Later i was at 154 unused ram. After 2 hours standby i was at 237mb unused ram. Would i ever get back to 400+ ? And is it really better or at least soesnt matter for battery life?

I found that to be true (not needing a task killer) but only under Gingerbread (I've noticed that since I upgraded my Nexus One to Gingerbread), but on FroYo that's not really the case, or so I've noitced.
However I found that the task killer included on the Atrix works really well (much better than any other on the Market). It's just a matter of selecting the apps that you don't want to auto close and that's it. The battery last a bit longer and the device does not heat up at all.

Heres how I see it.
On your computer, you're always scrambling for more ram right? Because you are running multiple applications at once. You have a music player, a game, chat, windows itself, antivirus etc.
On your phone, it depends more on your processor speed. You arent multitasking like crazy (and if you are your phone would start to heat up really rapidly) Android allocates ram accordingly to what you are running in the foreground and apps that arent open but were opened recently. That way, if you reopen a recently closed app, it is still in memory and will open quicker. If you don't access the closed app after a while, it will clear itself from memory. You definitely don't need a task killer for android, only more processing speed.

Bingo. So many people freak out that they don't have enough RAM... it's getting annoying seeing as how the Android OS has been out for a long enough time to understand this now.
Even of you cant find it it doesnt matter. Your phone will tell you.

I had tried two ICS roms so far as we lose over 100mb in useable ram going from gingerbread to ice cream sandwich. Just wondering if all of the ICS roms are like that or not?
Any idea why we lose 100mb? I'd really like to have it back
It seems like that RAM is being allocated to integrated graphics and I did notice this across the board between dagr8's and smartguys port of team perfection ROMS.
Subscribed for more information, good question if we can change allocation.
Of course all of the ics roms will have the same amount of usable ram. They all use the same kernel, the stock kernel in the leak, cause without source it's pretty much going to stay that way.
I don't get the obsession with usable ram... It's Android, free ram is wasted ram. Stop worrying and let the lmk do its job.

There's this misconception that used RAM = slower, laggier performance and that also is not the case.
People need to check their Windows PC conceptualization of RAM usage at the door.

you are correct. Samsung dedicated more ram to the video card, which is probably to fix the black crush and gradient issues that are in the stock rom. Apparently the video ram allocated in gingerbread cant drive this monstrous display like they thought.
it does suck losing it, because its just that much less left for multitasking, but it fixed the display issues so its a good trade off for me.
also, this issue is not in android devices with tegra 3. With tegra 3 the video card has dedicated video ram, meaning that a 1gb android device shows 1 gb of total ram since its not shared with the video card. This is great because it means better multitasking because more apps stay in memory.

The obsession with usable ram is smoothness, it makes a difference, if it didn't why aren't we still all using 512mb phones?
Once the ram is filled up swapping has to occur, when this happens cpu cycles and flash read/write cycles are introduced and they slow down your experience..
Losing 100mb of ram is a big deal, its over 33% of available ram for me. And it does effect performance unfortunately.

It feel totally makes a difference, I have been complaining about this issue for the longest and all I hear is that it doesn't do anything to our phone. If it doesn't do anything why do I keep getting a message that states that I have no more ram and that it will close everything to free up ram. This is one thing that I really don't like about Android, I sure hope that this changes in the future, because no matter how much ram is installed on our phone we will always have an issue because we cant control what apps we can fully close..

100=1000/3? You might want to double check that one.
No matter how many tabs I open in chrome, along with beautiful widgets and Facebook, 2 email accounting syncing and Engadget, joystick, reddit and XDA apps running I never take a performance hit.
My advice is to spend less time running quadrant, your rams are being out to good use.

I think he meant 1/3 of free ram. Typically a stock gingerbread from had 320-350mb free ram.

Correct.. I lost 100mb or so of free ram, which forces the phone to swap more often. If we lost it to help the video card then that's fine, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else.
Maybe with an official build of ICS the sluggishness will be better...
Interesting point here... I saw a screen shot of an international Note on ICS and the max free RAM was at 803 MB. Maybe its just an issue with our ics leak that we have so little free RAM?

Been doing some testing on this. It appears that limiting the background applications to three returns the free memory back to gb levels. Been testing this all day with my objection rom, and my used memory has not gone above 472 used with 3 background applications running. That leaves plenty of room to run my games in the forground or office applications. Phone has been running smooth and with out error.
In objection rom to limit the back ground applications. Settings /development options / limit back ground process.
Also been looking at my wife's nexus with non rooted ics. Her phone shows 728 Meg of available ram. Not sure why our leaked version is showing only 656.

Thanks! after reading this post...I went into the ICS settings on Unofficial ROM and set the settings to 3 background and kill apps on exit..it improved A LOTTTTT....Ive been lurking a long time and this is the best advice I have read!

I have read this before, but I wonder if more memory is used then more battery is consumed. Isn't that right?

Loading and unloading apps all the time needs a lot more battery that keeping the RAM filled up. Both performance and battery life would suffer if the RAM would be kept empty.

i have this problem as well.. and when too much ram is consumed around 650mb on average for me.. my s3 will starts to lag sometimes when exiting from an app to the home screen. anyone has solution to this ? clearing the memory dosen't help much. memory still fluctuates around 600+ mb
Install a task manager with listing capability, e.g. Houmiak Taskmanager and check which process(es) cause the high usage.
It should not lag, usually that's caused by app service processes not terminating correctly when exiting/closing the app and filling up memory to the brink.
If you got such apps you might want to try 'Fast Reboot' which usually gets rid of them very fast with (imho) less performance impact than most other 'memory cleaners'

Yet if i hit clear memory, it says 21 apps closed and drops down to 530
I get high RAM usage too , sometimes can reach up to 680 but the odd thing is that I don't see any difference in terms of performance. It is still fast as ever.

I stumbled across this in hope of a permeant fix as mine too is around 650mb and phone starts to lag. Only quick solution I have is to go into developer options and click background processes and limit the amount that can occur. I turned mine to 0. Don't know the effect on battery yet but its around 500mb now and the phone is now back to its smooth self.
Wont that stop software such as weather to update in the background?

Best way to preserve ram is to switch off your phone..that way it will have 1 gb ram..
[Off topic] killing background processes will make your phone like my Nokia 1100..with no multitasking..all the apps will close once you exit..and all the data will be loaded up when you restart again..taking up more cpu time and battery..

I was having the same problem with my S3 the first week I bought it. I switched it off and on again and it was back to normal
Just my point of view using a comparison :
On the computer when I installed more RAM it's to have more apps load in it instead of waiting for them to be loaded... Not just to have more RAM unused...
On the phone it's the same.
Android seems to handle ram usage very well, killing apps on it self when ram is required...
Reason I did it was when my ram was going above 600mb upon exiting apps my home screen would hang with no icons for a few seconds. Task manager, clear process and it return to normal. Limiting the process somehow worked. It's not logical but these are phones not computers.
There's no software trick on my mac that can increase ram like jelly beans has done so who knows.
Plus most apps apart from weather etc store their last state and resume where you left off so doing what I says does not affect me.

I too have this ram problem. I like that the phone is doing its best to keep the ram full for multitasking purposes but i hate when it lags when i go back to the home screen. Also sometimes i close an app to do something else, say texting, then go back and it has to re-open the app because android killed it to free up space. Couldnt it just cache it if it needs space instead of fully closing it?
I heard there was an update that fixed this ram issue but its not showing up for my phone.
In some ways i miss my galaxy s2 :/

Ok so I've got this phone a week ago, and I like it so far. Ieike the beautiful screen and the great battery life. I gave my galaxy S2 to my wife.
However, this phone has a serious issue and I am really surprised that it is not floating all over XDA: It is the RAM.
I used to install more than 120 applications on my s2. Despite that I had about 200 to 300MB of free RAM.
As a common sense, I did the same on my s3, but I ended up with around 80 to 100 mb of free RAM. I WAS SHOCKED
I tried to be more scientific so I did more investigation on this issue:
Both all phones are rooted , both running on custom ROM.
S2 on 4.1.2 XXLSJ ROM with stock Kernel. No system apps are removed. Has all bloatware.
S3 on 4.1.2 XXEMA2 ROM with stock Kernel however it is approximately completely cleaned from bloatware like ALL share , all widgets that I don't use, kies, Samsung apps, and every other irrelevant stuff.
After closing all recent/ running apps , I got In Running services :
S2 506MB RAM used / 321 MB RAM free
S3 759MB RAM used / 74MB RAM free
To get more info, I installed an application Called android status from market. It didn't show anything abnormal.
As you can see in the attached screenshots, while the running services are approximately the same, the cached processes are a lot more on the S2 since it's still bloated But still despite all that the S2 has much more free RAM!!!!
This issue is driving me crazy!!
What could be the culprit !!!?

From launcher redraws to phone and contact lag.. Everything is caused by it
There's no solution but only workarounds.

I had the same issue
HTC Desire HD (768MB RAM) - Custom ROM - Always 150-200MB free RAM
S3 i9300 (1GB RAM) - Stock ROM (cleaned, lots of services stopped etc) 100MB or less free RAM
S3 LTE i9305 (2GB RAM) - Stock ROM (cleaned, lots of services stopped etc) 600-500MB free RAM
On my Desire HD never had luancher redraws, dialer, messaing app dropping from memory but was a issue on the S3, I think its an issue with higher resolution screens and software not optimized properly (memory management).
I have seen a fair few Xperia T devices which also have 1GB RAM but they seem to have 200-300MB free RAM.
I have the S3 LTE (i9305) now and RAM usage is always above 1GB, generally around 1.1/1.2 GB.
Maybe it's just Samsung software.

Sorry to tell you but that's not true!
I can multitask easily on my S2 but I cant on my S3!! We can't just give some arguments just to convince ourselves!
I can open up to 5 apps and seamlessly switch between them while I can't do the same on my s3! It reopens the app!
Damn I'm really depressed by this sh*t! It should have been 2 RAMs!

I have a nexus 7 and the amount of memory used by identical apps is 2-3 times more on the s3. It must be down to the architecture of the processors and compiling.
I have to remove loads of bloat and freeze some apps when not in use to make it usable. Shocking really.

Free ram is not wasetd ram , its used to cache apps in the ram and when the ram is full no apps will be cached and and no apps will run in the background :thumbdown:

Edit: mali driver r2p4 is known to leak the ram in JB so I bet its still leaking ram even after patching the framework

The ram issue on the S3 is well-known. The memory management isn't as good as it could have been. I blame bloatwiz. Don't know if we should cry or laugh. They have crammed more than 800 MB of bloat in a phone that runs perfectly without it. A full odin rom is approx 1.2 GB and it's possible to reach a size of 300 MB (I know, because I have tried), by seriously cleaning up the system partition, in terms of apps and libs and it runs without a hitch, and has loads of ram left.
It also goes without saying that unused ram, is wasted ram.

If you actually read a bit of the thread instead of aggressively dismissing the post, you would have realized that the lower amount of ram is because there are more cached processes. That's where the RAM went. The underlying issue is the RAM management itself.
As others have pointed it out, unused RAM is wasted RAM.
If you don't have a good knowledge of what you are saying, better not tell others to shut up and maybe put it in practice yourself.
Also, there is no proof that there is a leak in the Mali hack job from Samsung in stock roms. It's not comparable to the leaking in CM which is completely replicable.

More free RAM=better multitasking,it's a fact.It's only wasted if you are going to run only 1 app at a time or else android will start killing apps when your phone is running out of memory.Not to mention the annoying browser refreshes which I face a lot even when I'm running only1 app with the browser(e.g:Facebook).If I'm playing a heavy game and recieved a 1 min call, the game restarts and I lose my progress.The problem is the terrible memory management in touchwiz ROMs,I have tried out a few AOSP 4.2 ROMs before and I have to say that multitasking is much better on them and browser refreshes happen less frequently.So,if you are ok with losing TW's features, flash an aosp ROM for better multitasking.

LOL can u check how many apps are cached when when the free ram too low ( 80 or 90 MB ) u will got 1 or 2 + as soon as u close the app it will get killed instead of get cached :silly:
for god sake stop saying free ram is wasted ram ( if is that ur theory then go for 512 MB ram device its enough for u beause free ram is wasted ram ) and live with **** multitasking
and Mali driver leak is just a thought because the free ram problem only happened on JB on ICS my sister device was have about 200MB ~ most of the time
Well used to have this issue. Rooted, installed omega 40 and I can seamlessly multitask upto 6-7 apps at a time. Try omega rom, multitasking is great in this rom.

So what you are saying the apps are not cached they are kept in RAM, please learn what caching is, cached apps are stored in the cache partition of the phone, they are not cached in the RAM otherwise the phone is doing nothing with them.
Android works by moving background apps to the internal memory, if you switch your phone on check RAM usage, then open apps using the home button to get back to the home screen and check it you will see that no matter how many apps you open the free and used RAM values barely change up to a certain point, this is the app caching at work.
If you home out of apps you will see why Android caches apps.
Running stock ELLA I just used the recent apps, and home button, opened 7 apps and used the home button to return to the home screen, no launcher redraws, and my apps all opened instantly where they were.

You must have had the international version... Only 1gb in the US.
I should never have to manually free up ram when I gave 2gb.
I suppose when we get 4gb, they will eat that up too?
My phone is not their private platform for running spam software... If so, the phones should be free.

Before I moved to CM, I never had RAM issues. The most I ever saw used was 1.2, and that was only once. Most of the time, my phone sat around 800-900 MB in use.
Also, bloat aside, Linux has a habit of filling and using all available RAM, but in an efficient way. You can't look at your Android phone the same way you look at a Windows PC. Low available RAM isn't definitely a problem, because a lot of that may be idle.

Exactly. Android will use the RAM it has to work with. "Full RAM" being detrimental to performamce hasn't been an issue since froyo.
More RAM meens more apps can be kept cached for fast opening... Consuming neither CPU cycles nor battery.

I agree with all that, however when using the phone intensively bouncing in and out if several apps and videos etc... The android system seems it likes to hold on to non used programs too long rather than realizing ram is getting short and shutting them down.
With casual "take your time" use its great, but when getting intense it's not.
Does android look at idle time of an app before shutting it down, or does it look at resources?
To me, it doesn't seem like it handle the latter very well.

If you find that its actually detrimental, then try raising your minfree value. But like others have said, with linux based systems (like android) "full" ram means an efficient system.

I stand corrected you're right I had it backwards, I guess I'm updating to fast to keep up with what I have. I just got my S4 and I'm already looking towards the note 3 I hope it has more RAM.
I'm certainly not an expert on Android system and yes I've been in Windows since version 3.0.
I guess it is what it is. I have an app called clean Master, it sounds like you guys don't believe in those programs? It alerts me when it has a gig of ram that can be freed up . So you are saying it's better leave those apps open in RAM so it takes less time to activate them when opening?
I somehow have more faith in free RAM then I do and having 50 apps on standby.
Historically Android is not absolutely efficient and RAM is.
When I moved from one gig of ram to 2 gigs of ram I noticed a notable difference in the smoothness and quickness of the phone, yes the processor was faster too but it felt like the RAM was the ticket

Hold the home button down and close down some programs. When I do that it only use 830-900mb of ram up.that leaves plenty for apps and web pages.
And I'm running stock everything really... I value the reliability and consistency for now because I use my phone for my job lol
