I recently soft bricked my SGSII after trying to update firmware using Odin. The phone was rooted and i had an ICS rom which was working fine, but i wanted to restore my apps and contacts that i lost when i installed the rom.
Anyway, i couldnt fix it myself no matter what i tried so i sent it away to get JTAG repaired and now its back to normal. When i got it back, it was running XWKK5 firmware which wasnt the original.
Anyway, when i plug the phone in, Kies recognises it and works fine, but in the firmware section, it says "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies".
My carrier (Optus Australia) should be releasing the official ICS update in the next few weeks and i really want it but it appears Kies wont do it. Is there any way to work around it. After my previous experience i'd rather not have to use Odin if i dont have to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ok, first of all, obviously, you don't need kies to get that ics rom, because whenever it will be pushed to the users, it will already be available for flashing with odin. so there is absolutely no need for you to get your phone to work with kies again.
also, one might mention that you clearly know, this is a question, as you marked it with [Q], however, failed to post in the Q&A section, but don't worry about it. i reported it, so it will be moved in the correct section.
what i am really interested in, is your pre story:
you soft bricked your phone? then you say it was working fine but you wanted to restore contacts and sent it out for jtag repair? i'm sorry, but that does not make any sense to me, do you maybe want to shed some light on that? if you asked on xda first, some expensive repairs might become obsolete, such as an apparent "jtag contact restore".

sorry about the lack of clarity with that. i rooted the phone and installed the ics rom. it was working fine but i couldnt restore my apps, contacts etc from the backup i made so i decided to go back to the stock gingerbread. i got the firmware, flashed it with odin, but it crashed halfway through and the phone wouldnt work. i could get to download mode but when i tried to flash other firmware or do other things to fix it that people on xda told me, they didnt work.
after trying everything, then i sent it for the JTAG.
like i said, i dont really want to have to use odin, i'd rather use kies. is there a way to do that or do i have to use odin?
oh, ok, that explains it.
unfortunately, you will have to flash the device through odin at least once more to get to the point, where it will be recognized by kies again. apparently, your current rom kk5 is not meant for your device (your carrier, your region etc.) so you will have to find a rom, you are certain, is available for you and contains your csc.
then download it from intratec's official rom thread or samfirmware and flash it through odin, following the procedure exactly. if you flashed an XW or XX rom, make sure to change the csc to your original one after flashing, enter *#272*yourIMEI# and select your original csc, your device will be wiped in that step.
after that, kies will eventually (it might take a few days and a few connection attempts) recognize your device again and offer you the update to the latest version for your region.
if it doesn't and gives a specific error message, you should use the forum search with that error message. there have been a lot of threads regarding updating through kies and phones not being recognized, but first you should bring your phone back to stock conditions, so kies has a chance of getting it.

ok, thanks for that advice, i'll look around
this is 4th person im reading today who want to backup / restore contacts.......
guys even if you dont use gmail its not hard to make a account and let it sync which is auto and all your contacts are now saved on google, so whenever you factory reset or new ROM, signin in will get you youe contacts....
Hey all - before I start I do want to say that I've watched the noob video and I have searched endlessly for days...I'm finding bits and pieces of valuable infomation that have prevented me from making some serious mistakes and I'm eternally grateful for that. I'm also seeing great root guides for my P7510 that I will follow once I am certain that I am in a good spot with my device.
That said....
I want to simply root my P7510 (3.1 updated OTA to 3.2 right out of the box, 2.6.36.3, P7510VLKL2) for now...no custom ROMs just yet, but I do want the ability to do it. So, I followed the guides in various places to obtain the Recovery.tar.md5 for CWM 5.5.0.4 (saw it was recommended to use the latest to flash the 4.1 JB ROM..thought what the hell) and flashed it with Odin 1.85.
Rolling recovery screen. I squinted...hard...and was actually able to take a NANDroid backup which I'm planning to move off of the device and onto my PC for safe keeping. After that however, I determined that trying to read the screen and go further would make my brain blow up and I should try to fix the screen issue first.
Rebooted, no problem. I rooked out major after that thinking "oh, well OK CWM doesn't like me so let's flash TWRP and that will make it all better". Yeah right, that made things WAY fun as I spent 2 hours poking at my rolling screen trying to figure out where the buttons actually are to reboot the device without destroying something.
So I've re-flashed CWM 5.5.0.4 because even while it still rolls, I can at least read it - but I'm gunshy to try anything now because I can't read the thing. I've seen threads about trying to unlock the bootloader but other threads say it isn't necessary. I've seen threads about flashing stock ROMs with Odin but have heard absolute horror stories about people flashing what they thought were stock ROMs and making things worse.
I've searched for this answer everywhere and can't get any help...so, powers that be, if I may draw upon your infinite wisdom, please enlighten me...is it feasible to root my HC3.2 P7510 (purchased in Canada) using the root package that you can find anywhere on an OLDER version of CWM? Will ALL versions of CWM roll my screen like this or just 5.5.0.4? Do I even need 5.5.0.4 if I'm not trying to flash the alpha 4.1 ROM?
Thanks in advance for any help you all can provide in consolidating all the great related info in this forum into one place...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27830023&postcount=41 <<<< Is this my way out? Again, I've read a lot about bootloaders and this is the closest thing I can find to a straight answer but I want to be ABSOLUTELY positive that it's the correct file....
EDIT: Updated bad URL there.
Hey guys, so I was trying to update the stock firmware from 2.3.3 to 4.0.1 (I think) through Kies (as it suggested I do) and part way through the update Kies said it had a fatal error, so the firmware failed to complete. It won't let me do a emergency firmware restore, and I've been trying to use Odin to install the stock firmware (which I downloaded) and it isn't working either.
Please help!!!
Sorry, I'm a noob when it comes to phones.
The "Odin won't work" thing gets covered here dozens of times every week. You need to find similar posts, there are a set of troubleshooting steps you need to try.
Edit - Re: Kies; don't use it. It's crap.
You had me at "4.0.1 (I think)".
This is when I tell you to go read some threads.
Sent from the little guy
I have to start by telling you I am not only a Newbe I am a NO-Knowbee, a complete novice. I am an advanced computer user but smart phones make me fell stupid. So please bear that in mind when offering "how to" advice.
I bought this phone 3 weeks ago as Rooted. I think is was rooted but SuperSU will not start. I get a message that the SU Binary need to be updated. I have two choices. NORMAL which fails and the other is TWRP/CWM which does nothing either but suggests I manually reboot into recovery manually. I have no idea what to do.
Nice mess there ... maybe others have better opinion here but .. the question would be to fine out what version of android you have (aka like windows xp, 7, 8/8.1 etc) then from that point I would almost want to start over ..
Some people have differ opinions on this but my opinion is to start over and re-root the phone. Either they failed on the unlocking boot loader or something and just decided to sell it. (in windows terms they basically corrupted everything).
So the question comes down to is being able to put on custom roms? Depending circumstances you can unlock the boot loader and then install any custom rom (modified OS made for that specific phone, you cant just put anything it has to be made for this phone etc..)
Next question if you can live without going through that (different roms) and want to stick with stock (whats already on the phone) and just want root, then the my opinion would be to just redo everything then re-root it fresh.
Theres a program called Odin that you would use and you would need the stock file to which is currently on your phone and you would need to download it (the file is usually about over a GB in size) and you would need to do that. However telling you how to do that here while its simple this is something you need to read and learn about. Its just like finding tweaks and tips on windows. There's a EXCELLENT help section here and I HIGHLY recommend you read and read more and more. Its like potato chips you cant eat just one. Good luck.
I'm trying to fix an S4 for my friends 14 yr old son. All I know is that he says he used towel root to root it. There's some stuff on screen. Stable root, stable boot initiating, build number etc; can't remember exactly and don't have the phone on me now. Anyway, it boots just fine but systemui is constantly crashing, making it impossible to do anything. I tried a factory reset with no luck. Still same problems. I downloaded stock firmware and tried to odin back to stock also with no luck. Getting a "fail(auth)" message. My question is, before I attempt to try odin again is there a way I can push a new systemui.apk to the phone to try and fix it? Or a way to remove the root files through adb? Any help is much appreciated. For the record, I've successfully unbricked many galaxy devices in my time. Don't know why this one is giving me such a hard time.
Odin failed? Probably a bad download. Also was it a no wipe or emergency repair file? Best bet may be to follow the links in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2776189 for the appropriate build number and use the emergency repair if everything still isn't working.
I would recommend the no wipe Odin image from surge, Nc5, should take care of your issue. If that fails, you should try the Full wipe of NC5, bc that is rootable without downgrading or following some directions that you may not understand. Dont know your comfort level with the phone, but if you know adb, then you might be smarter than me.
Your Odin might have failed bc of a bad download. Try redownloading the file, use stock samsung data cable, try a different usb port on pc etc.
