Kies Fatal Error - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, so I was trying to update the stock firmware from 2.3.3 to 4.0.1 (I think) through Kies (as it suggested I do) and part way through the update Kies said it had a fatal error, so the firmware failed to complete. It won't let me do a emergency firmware restore, and I've been trying to use Odin to install the stock firmware (which I downloaded) and it isn't working either.
Please help!!!
Sorry, I'm a noob when it comes to phones.

The "Odin won't work" thing gets covered here dozens of times every week. You need to find similar posts, there are a set of troubleshooting steps you need to try.
Edit - Re: Kies; don't use it. It's crap.

You had me at "4.0.1 (I think)".
This is when I tell you to go read some threads.

Odin freezes during KI3 Update!

Hello folks,
I'm trying to update my Galaxy S2 to the KI3 firmware (because of recommendations concerning battery life), and a few weeks ago, I followed this tutorial and bricked my phone. (Full brick)
Now I got my phone back, everything is repaired, but the firmware is on version 2.3.3. Since my provider is still struggling with testing the 2.3.4 (which is ridiculous), I really want to update it to 2.3.5 with Odin.
I killed all kies-related processes and ran the program with administrator rights, but it keeps freezing at "<OSM> Please Wait...". Then I have to reset the phone and everything is back to the starting point. I checked "Re-Partition", inserted the PIT/Phone/PDA/CSC files all properly and tried every USB port available.
I just want the stock KI3, not a custom ROM.
Can anybody help me, please?
Edit: OS is Windows 7 64-Bit, and I'm using Odin 1.85.

Wait, what?
If this guide is telling you to repartition, find another guide, preferably one from these forums.
I'm trying to find a stock 2.3.5 KI3 on the Original Android Development Forum, but I just can't seem to find one. Maybe I'm blind or just too stupid to find the correct search terms. :I
Edit: I found this one, but have no idea what deodexed or zipaligned could mean. I'll try it anyway.
Edit 2: Wait, I need CWM for this. Is there somewhere a KI3 for Odin?

Thank you, thank you so much!
"5. DO NOT PUT .PIT FILE AND DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TICK REPARTITION.
Anyone ask about .pit file is a moron"
I feel guilty now.
re-partition is ok, because he has pit file..

[Q] How to downgrade?

Hello! I have encountered a problem regarding my newly upgraded galaxy S2.
Im gonna recap quickly:
- I went here to download ICS and find instructions
- I used ODIN to upgrade
- I forgot to backup the OS i had first
- I succeeded installing ICS on my own with few instructions
Now, after a few weeks of having ICS, i find it quite buggy, native apps bugging and closing on me making me very frustrated, and it doesnt even have the support for the HD adapter special made by samsung for it!
So I've had ENOUGH.
but when i tried to downgrade it, i faced a few problems.
- I did not have a backup of the OS.
- I cannot find any odin md5:s for the 2.3.5.
- Kies wont discover my unit, just endlessly loads.
so if anyone could give me anything of these i'd be happy:
(sorted in how glad i'd be)
1. A way to do it without the hassle of ODIN or Kies
2. ODIN package for 2.3.5.
3. A resolve for the problem with for kies.
Thanks in advance! /// ssbberggren

Here's Open Europe, 2.3.5, XXKI3. Password is samfirmware.com
Put PIT in PIT, Code in PDA, Modem in Phone and CSC in CSC. Tick the top 3 options in ODIN (re partition, Auto reboot and F. Reset), and flash.
What exactly do you need?? You obviously know how to flash etc...? how you upgrade is pretty much how u downgrade ....
Thanks very much

[Q] Firmware updates with Kies

I recently soft bricked my SGSII after trying to update firmware using Odin. The phone was rooted and i had an ICS rom which was working fine, but i wanted to restore my apps and contacts that i lost when i installed the rom.
Anyway, i couldnt fix it myself no matter what i tried so i sent it away to get JTAG repaired and now its back to normal. When i got it back, it was running XWKK5 firmware which wasnt the original.
Anyway, when i plug the phone in, Kies recognises it and works fine, but in the firmware section, it says "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies".
My carrier (Optus Australia) should be releasing the official ICS update in the next few weeks and i really want it but it appears Kies wont do it. Is there any way to work around it. After my previous experience i'd rather not have to use Odin if i dont have to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ok, first of all, obviously, you don't need kies to get that ics rom, because whenever it will be pushed to the users, it will already be available for flashing with odin. so there is absolutely no need for you to get your phone to work with kies again.
also, one might mention that you clearly know, this is a question, as you marked it with [Q], however, failed to post in the Q&A section, but don't worry about it. i reported it, so it will be moved in the correct section.
what i am really interested in, is your pre story:
you soft bricked your phone? then you say it was working fine but you wanted to restore contacts and sent it out for jtag repair? i'm sorry, but that does not make any sense to me, do you maybe want to shed some light on that? if you asked on xda first, some expensive repairs might become obsolete, such as an apparent "jtag contact restore".

sorry about the lack of clarity with that. i rooted the phone and installed the ics rom. it was working fine but i couldnt restore my apps, contacts etc from the backup i made so i decided to go back to the stock gingerbread. i got the firmware, flashed it with odin, but it crashed halfway through and the phone wouldnt work. i could get to download mode but when i tried to flash other firmware or do other things to fix it that people on xda told me, they didnt work.
after trying everything, then i sent it for the JTAG.
like i said, i dont really want to have to use odin, i'd rather use kies. is there a way to do that or do i have to use odin?
oh, ok, that explains it.
unfortunately, you will have to flash the device through odin at least once more to get to the point, where it will be recognized by kies again. apparently, your current rom kk5 is not meant for your device (your carrier, your region etc.) so you will have to find a rom, you are certain, is available for you and contains your csc.
then download it from intratec's official rom thread or samfirmware and flash it through odin, following the procedure exactly. if you flashed an XW or XX rom, make sure to change the csc to your original one after flashing, enter *#272*yourIMEI# and select your original csc, your device will be wiped in that step.
after that, kies will eventually (it might take a few days and a few connection attempts) recognize your device again and offer you the update to the latest version for your region.
if it doesn't and gives a specific error message, you should use the forum search with that error message. there have been a lot of threads regarding updating through kies and phones not being recognized, but first you should bring your phone back to stock conditions, so kies has a chance of getting it.

[Q] Kies - "error found in downloaded file"

I'm having some troubles with Kies, and need help fixing it. I am trying to upgrade my S II to ICS through Kies, and am having no success. I eventually managed to get Kies to actually recognise my phone, but my problems didn't stop there.
Basically, it downloads the components and prepares okay, but when it comes to downloading the actual files, it reaches somewhere between 4 and 16 per cent completion before telling me "Failed to upgrade firmware - Error found in the downloaded file.Do you want to try downloading again?"
I have tried and tried and tried, but am clueless as to the cause. Google-Fu has returned some answers, none of which have worked.
Thank you for your time
I have the same problem... not found a solution yet.
Honestly ? If you want to save yourself grief & hours of fruitless searching/trying stuff out that doesn't work, flash the stock rom manually. These are usually available in Odin flashable form shortly after carriers push them to customers.
Obviously you run a very small risk of borking your phone with any flash, but as long as you follow instructions to the letter, you should be fine.
How/where to find them ?
Search the site starting with the Stickies (Samfirmware & AndroidFirmwares.net are good sources for stock roms; and there are others). I'm not about to regurgitate how to flash a stock rom via Odin when it's been posted here thousands of times before, plus reading the stickies is a good idea because they contain the 'basics' you really should know before you do anything to your phone.
Ultimately, you have to decide whether you want to do it the easy way & flash the rom via Odin but take on the risks associated with that, or whether you want to keep searching for another way to get Kies to do what you want.
I'm not going to advise you one way or the other, your decision entirely.

First of all, this is not a Development thread. At all.
Secondly, this thing has been talked many times, also in xda, with many threads of people with this problem. You should have just searched.
That said, can you post a screenshot of the Odin error?
If you can boot the phone into Download mode, it's more likely not bricked. I (and many others) use to have that problem when rooting it. It will probably be solved using another (older) version of Odin.
Check this thread with info on your same problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30694326
Good luck.
