WiFi issue - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

So, I'm sitting in a hotel that has great free wifi (15mbps down/up, Marriott) and my GS3 isn't picking up the signal at all. My iPad, laptop, and my wife's iPhone are connected with full bars (or bends, what have you), but nada for my GS3 wonderphone. Any tips?
I've restarted it twice, toggled the switch, and scanned manually. Not sure what else to do. :banghead:

There is a known issue with Wifi. It is odd that it won't connect at all. I'd go get a replacement. There is also a thread regarding the issue.

Is there any kind of fix yet?

Atrix wifi switches off

Ever since I've had my Atrix, the wifi randomly switches off. My question is: should I exchange my Atrix, or is there a way to fix this?

I am on the ATT network with no modifications done to my Atrix.

Have you got any power saving stuff enabled?

Unless it was enabled by default; no.

I think the Atrix's WiFi radio is just weak. My mom's iPhone gets 3 bars of WiFi across the house from my router, but my Atrix drops to two bars if I just go into the next room. My Atrix struggles to hold one bar across the house. It sucks, but then again, I am using the crappy router that comes with U-Verse.
I exchanged some PMs with a moto dev about this a few weeks ago. I have a weak wifi signal at work and it will drop if I start using marketplace or facebook extensively. Part of his/her PM:
The "bars" shown by the UI have pretty big margin of error but RSSI reading less then -80 pretty much puts link at the lowest end of the budget. Also that does not account for interference really because Wifi is simple technology. So if you are at -80 at a workplace that has tons of 2.4 RF you will have disconnects and many retransmissions. This is why using of the market place probably triggers something in IC because you have lots of data and error counters go up a lot.

If you're talking about a weak signal, there is nothing to do for that unless you increase your router's transmit power. If it drops, then go to wifi settings > menu capacitive button > wifi sleep policy > never.
I changed the wifi sleep policy and it still switches off randomly. The wifi will still switch off randomly even if I'm sitting right next to my wifi source.

What battery settings are you using? Is it power saver? Set it to performance, if so.
Yeah the wifi still dies

For the sake of testing, try disabling all security to see if the wifi connection is ok or not while sitting next to your wireless router. Also, could you let us know what kind of wireless router you are using (make and model#), and the type of securtiy you aare using, e.g. WEP/WPA/WPA2&TKIP, etc?
I have tried on 3 different modems, the current one I'm using is a wireless router WGR614 V9 with wpa security, I tried switching it off and I still had the same problem. The other 2 where in encrypted and still disconnected me. I also have the problem at ATT hotspots.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
that's not good. If you're up for it, reflash with stock and try wifi with nothing installed. If you still get the disconnects then get a replacement.
What does reflashing to stock entail? Is it as easy as ODIN?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
download from moto here. I haven't done it, but it looks more safe/less painful than an SBF flash.
I'm already at the latest version, through all the updates I've always had the same problem. I'm not seeing a stock firmware download.

[Q] Wifi connectivity issues

I got my GS2 not too long ago, and from the start, it's had issues connecting to my house router. I've tried the wifi elsewhere, and it works just fine.
I have about 7-8 other devices that connect to my router in my house, and they all work. Why doesn't my GS2 work? It's still on stock rom.
I have Verizon FIOS and the plain router they give you, if that matters. Looking for answers before the 30 day window if possible.
Have you tried restarting your router?

Or check for a firmware update for your router.

Is your router a D-Link? The SGS2 hates D-Link's. It has a fondness for Netgear's.

It's an Actiontec. Never heard of that brand.
Is there anything else I can do or check to figure out this problem?
Nvm. I restarted the modem, forgot the connection, then reconnected it. It worked, though it's kind of a weak signal. Thanks given to those who posted.
not the first time I've read that people were having weak wifi signals on their SGS2. I have yet to experience this myself so I'm guessing its incompatible with some routers. I have a verizon fios router and it works great.
I've noticed weaker signals on my S II compared to my captivate and my wife's Atrix. Nothing huge.
That's off a westell 327 dsl router.

I've had no problem connected to secured wifi, but whenever an open wifi is available and I get the notification, when I try to click on it, I just get a Settings crash / force close notification. If I try to manually go into settings and into wifi, it does the same thing. Phone is unrooted - anyone else having this issue?
wifi fix? not for me
I found somewhere online that you can punch *#*#526#*#* into your GSII, and it fixes wifi problems. When I do this, it does begin a driver download, but it never seems to finish. I'm still having the force close issue when trying to open settings to connect to some open wifi sources.

Problems connecting to internet at times! Really PISSED! Help!

Can anybody tell me why sometimes when trying to connect to the web or Facebook or anything that uses the internet, why sometimes the 4g symbol just stays there with no transmission lines being sent and receiving? I know when trying to connect the orange lines go in and out of 4g. I will be in the same spot with my fiance. She has an IPhone 4s with Att. I hit the Facebook and or the web at the same time on her phone. Hers connects right away. Mine will just sit there and load and load. Nothing being transmitted. Then after about 30 secs it connects. I don't understand. At times it will work and other times. It seems to be getting worse. I called at&t and they are going to send me a replacement phone not through insurance. But from samsung. Does anybody else experiencing problems like this before. I will have to sit there and wait for my phone to connect while my fiance is already surfing. This will happen in different spots. But whenever mind is not connect my fiance's iphone 4 s connect with no problem. this is my second Note doing the same thing. Is this how its supposed to work?
By the way I have already done hard reset clear cache and everything possible

ICS OTA WiFi Issues

Stock phone. I downloaded the ota ics yesterday. I have been having serious wifi connectivity issues that I never had before. Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I've had no Wifi issues so far. Using Comcast cable modem, I am getting Wifi download speeds of 25 mbps & uploads of 5 mbps.

Thanks for the response. I am using comcast's latest modem and when it works, it's great. The connection does keep dropping, though, and I never had this problem before ICS.

Starting last week my Comcast internet service began disconnecting intermittently, especially late afternoon through the evening. After wasting time on their website and with an online chat, I called Comcast to ask about the modem. They told me I needed an upgraded Docsis3 modem. I went to the local office yesterday, and they swapped it out @ no cost.
Switched from Arris TM602G to a SMC smcd3gnv. Not sure which type modem you switched to.
So far, no problems with the new modem. What I don't understand (well, maybe I do) is why I had to spend so much time figuring this out. Why didn't Comcast notify me first?

What router are you using? Sometimes certain phone OS's don't play nice with the certain router firmwares. I've had problems with my Netgear and my Tbolt in the past.
I am using Comcast's Technicolor TC8305C. I was told it was their newest modem/router. Works in tandem with Xfinity X1. Hated to do it, but i did a hard reset on the Thunderbolt today and so far everything is fine. It even took some of the lag away. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I've seen this when using an iffy internet connection. The screen shot shows you on the EDGE network, so I'd imagine that's the issue. Connect to a solid wifi network and see if that fixes the problem.

Ah! So you are... so you are. Then you, like me, may be looking for a new internet provider soon. Or perhaps the wifi you're on is having issues.
During my testing so far, I have only seen this on my (somewhat shoddy) wifi connection, and not on the much better LTE connection. That said, it also could be the HTC server is experiencing difficulties.
Assuming the issue is intermittent, it is almost certainly a problem with the network or the service, not your phone, and there's nothing much you can do about it on the phone itself.
