Wifi Tether for Root Users - slow speeds, throttled? - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

Anyone else here installed Wifi Tether for Root Users? play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
I have an unlimited data plan and I want to make the best use of my rooted handset. I've set it up and can get online, but I'm only getting .7/3 mbps while with the speedtest.net app I easily get 10/10+
With the default install in adhoc mode it wasn't working, so I changed the default profile to Generic ICS and the Setup-Method to Auto (which I think defaults to Netd(master)) I have wifi-driver reload enabled and I have tried with and without the "Routing fix"
Anyone have any experience with wifi tether, and maybe can suggest a fix/config that will work?

I'm curious: what happens if you disable TetheringGuard.apk (using pm or by deleting it)? Does that make the standard tethering feature in Wifi settings work?
(I have a shared data plan with built-in tethering, so I can't try it.)

I renamed the apk and the obex file, adding a .bak extension.
Wifi Tether speeds are unchanged.
Mobile Hotspot won't turn on (I usually get a message that says it's not on my account).
Not sure what to try next...

Thanks nitsuj17. I tried EasyTether and my speeds do seem to be more normal. Although that doesn't really give me a whole lot of conclusive evidence that I'm not being throttled. I can think of two possible causes right now:
1. Wifi Tether doesn't work correctly for my phone (which is weird because my uploads rates are 10x that of downloads)
2. Either Verizon or some piece of software on my phone is detecting that I am tethering over wifi and throttling me. I'm not sure what the best way to debug this is... maybe a custom ROM will do something?

1) the phone has the wireless charging built into the phone, (lol lucily they had a mat at the store so I made him look like a complete dip**** lol)
2) said that hotspot is now FREE, lmao, said I could share my internet from mt inc4g to up to whatver number devices they say for free.

I've tried just about every (free) app out there. I can't get any of the others to work. Android Wifi Tether is the only one that works, but with its speed limitations.

Wifi Hotspot is free IF you switch to the "Share Everything" plan. You're basically buying blocks of data at that point, so they don't really care how you use it. Primarily because you will most likely go over and pay overages.
Some of us have been grandfathered into Unlimited data plans. For us, wifi tether working as well as USB tethering would be amazing.

yea for out plan it actually saved us $70 a month!
I had unlimited but I don't need it, I don't tether, and we have 4 mines total and we were using under 2GB total on the entire plan, so we have 4 lines with 8GB for the month, we will NEVER come close to that, unless im tethering the entire month for an unknown reason.
so ur saying since, we are in a share everything plan now i actually can tether for free??
I tried it and it wanted to charge me $20

EDIT: I did a "Restart" of the phone, instead of a "Power off". I'm not sure if that did anything, but now my speeds seem to be normal!
nitsuj17: Do you have TetheringGuard.apk and TetheringGuard.odex removed/renamed? I've currently renamed them with a ".bak" extension because I wasn't sure what they do.

I did this after a fresh TWRP install and SuperSU root. Over wifi tether on Verizon in NYC right now I can only get ~.5/1.12. On the phone itself I'm getting 2.5/3.7. EDIT: After a fresh restart, I'm getting 22/13 on speedtest.
Do you also happen to be in NYC? Wondering where I went wrong in my setup. Anything you can think of you did differently (or how I can reset mine like yours)?

i still have tetheringuard in place, didnt affect anything for me

I get capped at 100kbps.

any updates to this?
i finally got my laptop to connect tonight using nitsu's power #12 (can't get a kindle fire to connect). i've got a full 4g signal but am getting 100 kbps as well...
upload is around 6 Mbps right now!

fyi... found a post that mentioned using TB to freeze the tethering guard app...
that seems to have made a noticeable difference. i'll have to do some testing over time but this is by far the best tethering speed i've been able to get.

Was there ever a fix?
i use to use FoxFi on my S3, which gave great speeds, but FoxFi has its own issues on the LG G3. Wifi Tether Router Works, but i get a fraction of the speed that my phone gets. aka, speedtest from phone gets 80mb down, but when i turn on the hotspot then run speedtest from my ipad/computer it only gets 2-4mb down.

Anyone able to use wifi hotspot for root users with the new radio?

Subject pretty much says it all. I haven't been able to get any third party tethering apps to work with the new radio. Post your apps and the configuration you are using if it works for you
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Works for me on new radio, BAMF 1.8.6, wifi tether 2.0.7
Oh I'm glad it's just me. Can I ask what settings you are using? Adhoc or ap? Using encryption?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I am using encryption and have access control on, and that's the only changes I made if I recall correctly. I have hardly used it, just wanted it set up on the phone so I'd have it in case of an outage because I only have 3G here. But I was able to connect to it from a tablet and browse to the Google website.

Can't complain about that.
Using Open Garden WiFi Tether (encrypted), BAMF 2.1, loaded the new radio earlier and it's working fine.
Running BAMF 3.0 RC4 and today's radio, wifi-tether 2.0.8-pre1 works fine for me, but 3.1-beta1 does not work (it seems to be a wifi connection issue, not an LTE radio issue)
Distinction between Hotspot and wifi tether
Can we make a distinction between the built in Hotspot app and the Wifi tether?
I can use Wifi Tether with the new radio but I can not use the Hotspot as it tells me to contact VZW to activate it.
The question I think for me is this... Is there any way to use the Hotspot built into the radio when rooted or do you have to revert back to old rooted rom and the old mr1 radio (original radio)?
Wifi tether is working fine for me on the new radio as long as you set your screen to never lock.
I had better results with easy tether though via usb. Both seemed to work though. I'm running cm7 rc1.2
Sent from my ThunderBolt using Tapatalk
Using 3.0 pre14 and it works on my end. I have "Routing Fix: Enable Routing-Fix (for HTC Devices)" selected.
My tethering was not working on the new radio...restarted a few times and now it works....I love it when things fix themselves, but I hate not knowing what was wrong
No go for me...
I am still on BAMF 1.6.3 at the moment because it has been so stable.
I can understand why the official VZW Mobile Hotspot app no longer works (without paying for it) because they are now charging for it.
However, I would love to know what sets that app apart from something like WiFi Tether. I have tried just about every version of that app, up to and including the new 3.1 Beta, and it just will not work for me. Neither my Xoom or my iPad 2 will connect. I do not understand how it works so well for others and not me. When I could get it to work, it would connect for a few minutes tops, and then the up/down counters would reset to 0 and my tethered device would drop.
What makes the native VZW mobile hotspot app so inherently more stable? I have a separate VZW 4G "MiFi" device I pay for and use, but there sure are times when the convenience of it on my phone would be nice, just not $30 a month nice.
If anyone has any ideas on what I could be doing wrong, please let me know. I think I am going to try BAMF 1.8.6 and a new radio, but I am not holding my breath.
Thanks,
-Rob

Unfortunately I do not believe this is Verizon's "Mobile Hot spot" .. This was inherently part of the functionality of the phone as it was built.
Verizon basically pushed another version of the wifi hotspot down that disables it unless it checks and validates you are paying them $30 a month.
The facts are they were sued back in the Motorola V710 days for crippling Bluetooth and this is no different.
They were sued also for crippling the GPS on the Samsung omnia when they were trying to make people pay for their Navigator.
Give it some time and they will be sued again.
In the meantime I am just going to keep using wifi tether for free and if they want to end my service contract ... so be it.

CM7 and 2.5 radio -wifi tether not working
The MR 2.5 radio caused several WiFi tethering apps for root to not work. I went back to MR 2 radio and it is working again.
I'm using CM7 RC1.3
I spoke too soon. With the MR2 radio now tethering still fails to work. Device can connect but they act like they fail to receive DNS entries and connection to the Internet never works. This might be due to Verizon's check to see if paying for tethering is on?
Im using MR2 OTA not the leaked one. Works fine for me. Mobile hotspot is dead do to the account check . Only thing ive noticed is a Nat issue. All will connect and run fine. but if i try to join a VOIP host lets say i cant. Gives me a Nat issue error. But all else works fine and has from day one. If you keep having a issue id reflash everything. Ive had problems going from one verison of a tethering app to another. Prolly due to the loaded configs. Ive got 3 TBs i test on and they all are on diffrent roms (same MR2 OTA radio though). But Back to the Nat Issue. I have OGdroids that do not have the NaT issues my TBs have. So its Rom or Kernel issue and not Tower Side. As far as i can tell anyways. Sorry i cant help more.( and you might try Dling a Fresh copy of whatever tethering app you use. Or try Barnacle and tell it not to load configs
I'm having intermittent NAT issues as well, including with Barnacle tether. It seems pretty random. Last night I was able to stream a Netflix movie via the mobile hotspot in CM7 but couldn't with Barnacle. This morning neither tethering apps would work. Radios I have flashed: 1.39.00.0528w, 0.01.69.0602w_1
I'm thinking this is Verizon's doing?

[Q] Free Tether For TB?

Is anyone currently using a free tether app for a Rooted TB?
This is what you want to use:

Roger that! I will give it a shot.
Seems to work great! I should only use this app alone and not the hotspot widget, right?
Yup thats all you need for tethering freedom
F...king Whoa!!! Makes rooting worth it.
Does this still work for anyone?
I was using both the built in portable hotspot in CM7 and occasionally the WiFi Tether app on my Thunderbolt and everything was fine until Verizon started blocking third party tethering apps *which apparently only affected Gingerbread users...
droid-life.com/2011/05/31/verizon-begins-blocking-wireless-tether-asks-that-you-purchase-a-plan/
Since then when I tried to connect to the WiFi hotspot from my laptop it would just hang while connecting, it would eventually give an error -something along the lines of: "unable to obtain an IP address" and if it ever did connect it would say connected with no internet access. The only app that would work for me was Barnacle WiFi Tether, and I'm still using it with no problems, just wish there were more options, and I'm scared it will get blocked soon too. I'm loving LTE, and with an unlimited plan at $29 a month it's just begging to be shared with my laptop.

The built-in wifi hotspot in CM7 works fine so I haven't found the need to try the wifi tether app linked above lately. If you'd clicked the "wireless tether" tag in the article you linked you would have seen some suggestions and statements that it works fine.
http://www.droid-life.com/tag/wireless-tether/
The CM7 tether can be a little buggy and give out after a while. Android tether has always worked the best for me.
Verizon can't block tethering apps on your phone, they can only get Google to remove them from the market (which they have) - though there is still a couple like barnacle floating around in the market.

Only downside is that if you abuse it (maybe 30+GB month) you're at risk of getting your data transfer rate slowed down. But the next month as long as you didn't use a lot the previous month it'll go back up.
Thanks for the info !

What's the trick to tethering?

I am wondering what the magic trick is to tethering?? I have tried literally every wireless/wired tether app out there and nothing is consistent. To get it to connect to my desktop wirelessly, I have to enable it, then connect on my desktop, then disable it, disconnect on my desktop, then enable and connect again. This is every single time. Web pages load about the same as my ATT dsl, downloads are a LITTLE faster, and other third-party programs (Skype, Halo 2, etc.) magically stop for no reason at random times, all this while my phone is just sitting on my desk next to my desktop and I haven't touched a thing, not to mention I do frequent speed tests right after these programs quit and I am still getting 11mbps-16mbps down......WAYYYYY faster than my horrible ATT dsl, which tops out at about 5.10mbps down.
I really really really want to dump my DSL and just tether from my phone to save $20/mo, but this is incredibly frustrating......wondering what the magic trick is to get it to work more solidly?
BTW, my Thunderbolt is running LiquidSmooth AOSP 3.0 ROM and my desktop is a Dell XPS 8100, Intel i7 processor with 2.8Ghz and 8gb of RAM, if that helps.

I don't know why you are trying to "connect to my desktop wirelessly"... Does your desktop have a wireless network card ? If not, you have to use USB tethering to provide 'net access to the desktop from your phone's data connection.

Yup, brand new Asus Wireless-N USB Adapter.
I don't know about wireless, but I use wired tethering via PDAnet. its very stable and I don't have any problems with it except one. occassionally, after a few hours(or if I use 1GB+ of data), it will then get really slow. ill have to temporarily turn off the phone's radio & then back on and everything returns to normal.
I do however feel it is an issue with the Thunderbolt as I have done the same thing with a Bionic and the Bionic never has the issue.
I use Wifi Tether v3.1-beta6. All I had to do to get it to connect was go under settings and be sure routing fix is checked. Connects to my laptop instantly and I get full 4g speeds.

Totally uncalled for. Troll elsewhere Mike. According to Block C provisions Verizon is required to allow us unlimited LTE data AND access to all apps *Even ones that allow tethering* They're trying to dodge a bullet claiming "Network Management" as the reasoning behind data caps and tether blocking.
Now as per the OP- I use default USB tethering built into CM7 and have had decent connection speeds / pings on 3g and 4g and I can watch Netflix / play Rift / connect to Vent / whatever without random disconnects. I'd go ahead and assume your wifi card on the computer just isn't playing nice with the wifi tethering and try a USB option before ripping your hair out in frustration.

First, you're wrong. You've stated something as fact which has not been decided. If you believe your interpretaton of the Block C restrictions is correct, get the FCC to do something about it, or successfully sue Verizon. Until you do that, tethering without paying for the feature is a violation of the contract you agreed to when you signed up for service.
Also, the rules put in place say nothing about providing such service at no cost. Verizon does not prohibit tethering, they just charge you for it. They allow unlimited usage, they just charge for it. Where's the violation?
Now stop ripping off legitimate tethering users (by stealing bandwidth which should be available to them) and VZW. Your rationalization of theft simply shows that you are a reprobate.
So back on topic of the op, i had some issues with the 605.5 base roms, but not older 605.0 and 605.3 based. I checked for the tetherguard.apk and haven't see it in any of the roms i've been trying. If you're using a sense based and having issues, try an older base rom, worked for me.

Do you really believe that the LTE base station at each cell tower is even remotely approaching traffic capacity?
Anyways, I prefer "WiFi Tether." Make sure you enable routing fix, and check "Disable Wake Lock"

What rom are you using and having success with? I'm currently on BAMF Forever 1.0.9 and at times its fine and other times my speed tests show 12-13mbps on my desktop I'm tethering too, yet many simple web pages won't load.
And what is Tetherguard?
I'm running a 605.5 based Rom and can tether no problem and full 4g speeds. I use wifi tether 3.1 beta6. Change device profile to thunderbolt and make sure routing fix is checked in settings.

i'm running killasense 3.2 (thanks orkilla! great rom) and everything works very very well.
under setup-method, i manually selected soft-ap. most phones need an access point-style connection, iphones and ipads can do ad-hoc but not any other phones, and my laptop had problems with ad-hoc on occasion.
* radios should be 0906 or newer. mine are super stable... both 3g, 4g and wifi!
* wifi tether 3.0 beta 6
* device-progile -> thunderbolt
* setup-method -> softap
check the following
* wifi driver reload
* mms clamping
* routing fix
then... UNCHECK disable wake lock
bam, should be good. also, delete the wireless network from your computer. network sharing -> wireless networks -> find and remove. then reconnect, should be good to goooo

short answer. wifi tethering doesn't come on the 2gb plan. only 5gb or higher. so yeah. you'll have to find a way around that I guess.

Check out my reply to another post in the General forum. Use one of the Tethering Widgets to get you past the subscription alert messages. It has successfully worked for many people on different carriers. I used "Fattin's" Wifi Tether widget.
Is that a custom ROM with tethering enabled? The limited or no connectivity, yellow triangle, comes when you have successfully connected to the network, but don't have internet access... then in your case your computer decides to go back to a remembered network...
Make sure Wifi is off before you enable tethering, and sometimes you will have to connect and reconnect and few times, even give it a minute before the yellow triangle disappears... This is all contingent on your rom having tethering enabled, and you're trying to use the stock android tethering...
To keep it from autoconnecting to the different network, you'll have to remove that from the preferred networks list temporarily...

[Q] WIFI tether with root...Options?

I have rooted and am looking for a wifi tether option. Is there anything available for the G3 yet other then paying Verizon? Thank you in advance for your help
I'm looking for options and waiting to buy until there is one.
use this
I used to use Barnacle Wifi Tether back in the OG Droid days before roms had it built in:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.szym.barnacle&hl=en
It's what i'm using now and it still works well.
Doesn't seem there's anything yet. I can confirm Foxfi does NOT work on the verizon g3

I can confirm that Barnacle does NOT work!
I am rooted and have tried almost every method to no avail. I'm hoping for a fix before my 30 day return window closes cause without hotspot or tether the G3 is useless for me.
Ditto..

I have tried just about all the methods I can think of and no dice... I'd pitch $20 towards a bounty for real wifi tethering. I think it's absurd that something that is basic functionality of the device, is blocked by the carrier so you can be forced to pay their fee. I'm already paying them $200+ a month, and they want me to pay more for something my phone already does?

I'd be willing to put into a bounty pot too
This worked for me
I was able to follow the directions at droidviews.com/how-to-enable-wifi-tethering-on-verizon-lg-g2-vs980/ using the 4.4.2 modified provision. I take no credit for it, but It does seem to work for the G3 as well.
*Edit - It only works after you change the name of the device. Once the hotspot feature is removed it will not reconnect. You'll have to go back into Set Up, and select "Back to Defaults" and save. This will free up the MHS again for that 1 time use. Anyone know of a way to make it permanent?

What i usually do is either change the channel or frequency. Its not permanent, but its better than going to default every time

I just found that Wifi Tether Router from the Play store works great now! I found it on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/help/g3-hotspot-hack-t2812305/post54329287
I use the following settings from the dev, and it works great!
For LG G3 using this config
Interface wlan0
Method 3 - HostApd
Channel 1
Encryption wpa2-psk
Drivers nl80211
"HostApd Patch" <- UNCHECKED
One oddity with WiFi Tether, when you Disable, it doesn't automatically release the WiFi -- my tethered device (the tablet I'm writing this on) still shows a connection to my SSID.
My settings are the recommended ones for G3 (I didn't have to touch any of them, that's how it installed).
It does seem to release the port if you specifically turn WiFi back on on the phone, though I'm not certain -- I see multiple available wireless networks in my WiFi settings, a positive sign.
Net, I'm happy with it (had it running about 6 hours so far today), and hopefully the dev will issue an update to truly release the WiFi on the phone when you Disable.

I have noticed the same thing, and if I enable and disable the wifi on my phone it does work. It seems the easiest solution so far. I know someone emailed the dev about the issue with it releasing the wifi. Hopefully it will be corrected soon. It's not that big of an inconvenience for me though. Far less than not having wifi at all, and better than using the hack for the stock hotspot which requires changing a setting and setting back before it will work.
Agree, I prefer it to the modded hotspot apk approach. Time to restore the original two hotspot files
Thank you...I just tried it and it is working

The developer of WiFi Tether was very quick in responding to me, already generated an update that I just tested, fixing the bug. It now, correctly, stops sending the SSID when you select Disable.
I expect he will post the update officially reasonably soon.
Work great! Thanks!
