ClockworkMod Recovery for Inc 4G? - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

Is there any chance one of the devs working on this device can get CWM recovery working for it? I've used CWM exclusively on my OG Droid and Inc 2.... I'm hesitant to use a recovery I'm unfamiliar with on my Inc 4G.

The only recovery available is TWRP. I don't know of anything being worked on through other developers. But trust me on this, TWRP is far superior and easier to use. Just an opinion, but wanted to shed some of your fears. I've used TWRP on several phones and it works extremely well.

Do you know if ROM Manager can be used with TWRP? Or would it even be necessary to install ROM Manager?
Sent from my HTC Incredible 4G

RomManager is designed for CWM. I strongly doubt it will work giving recovery commands that reboot the phone. In fact, judging by the comments left about RomManager lately, I don't think it supports much of anything any more.

rom manager is usually compatible with other recoveries (4ext comes to mind)
i cant speak from experience w/ twrp though

I think Koush kind of got overwhelmed with Rom Manager tbh. Soo many phones out there now...huge damn undertaking. It's slipped a little in popularity. I've read some posts where people were talking about experiences with him and support. Don't know how true they are as I've never spoke with him and everything posted on the interwebz is the gawd-honest troof. But support for new phones I think is seriously lacking at this point.
Whatever you do though, don't force CWM into your phone through Rom Manager though...you could be without a recovery

Thanks for the insight. My personal experience with Koush and his products have all been good. I was just wary of flashing something I've never used. My main goal right now is to just root my Inc 4G so I can get free WiFi tether. I'm grandfathered into unlimited data, but that doesn't include WiFi Hotspot. Then I'm going to wait for some CM10.

I will not even consider porting CWM. It is the worst available recovery and rom manager is garbage.

CWM was great on older devices like the original Incredible, but on newer devices, it has invited a lot of problems. You're much better off with TWRP. When the time comes to install custom ROMs on this device, consider using Goo Manager instead of ROM Manager--many developers are now supporting their ROMs on Goo.im and Goo Manager can do everything with TWRP that ROM Manager could do with CWM in terms of flashing.

Can you explain why CWM isn't so good and TWRP superior? Im really curious?
I have used both, I had CWM on a few phones but only recently got introduced to TWRP when I needed to put a recovery on a tablet (kindle fire I think...). That being said, the Dinc 4G is the 2nd device I put that recovery on, and I guess it works fine, I mean its done everything expected of it without fail, then again, CWM was pretty reliable as well... soo...

CWM has been associated with bad blocks, failing to fully wipe device partitions, and disabling charging while the phone is off making the phone remarkably difficult to resurrect if the battery dies, among many other device-specific problems (for example, 5.0.2.0 failing to make a nandroid backup with the ext4 mod flashed on the original Incredible). It's also annoyingly proprietary (ironic, when its primary purpose is flashing open-source ROMs...) in the sense that it ties in specifically with ROM Manager and the two are not very compatible with much of anything else (for example, openrecoveryscript).
TWRP is much more open (which is why apps like Goo Manager are able to support it) and has one really crucial brick-proofing feature that sets it apart: a battery indicator. (Some ports of CWM Touch have battery indicators baked in, but CWM Touch has largely been a porting mess and adoption has been very slow.)

[Q] Confused about ROM Manager

So I have tenfar's CWM on my phone right now, but I've heard a bit about ROM Manager, and it seems easier to use. I'm wondering what if any drawbacks it has over what I'm using.
CWMs
Tenfar's works with latest OTA 4.5.91, but your mileage will vary with the ROM Manager. As far as I can tell Rom Manager does not work unless you have an unlocked bootloader. I have installed both and tried to use Rom Manager and it has never worked for me. Tenfar on the other hand works flawlessly and as described. I'd go with Tenfar over Rom Manager because Tenfar's works with locked bootloaders and honestly I don't think Rom Manager works at all, unless your boot loader is unlocked. Then you might have some luck. Rom Manager also wants you to pay money for it.
ROM Manager is incompatible with Tenfar's version of CWM, and the one that it'll install has issues with wiping data and cache. This makes it somewhat useless until thats fixed.

what is hard about Tenfar's CWM?????....i have never found an issue with his CWM...it makes a perfect backup, perfect restore, flash roms....flash add-ons...never had a single problem...
Nothing is hard about it, but from what I understand about ROM Manager, you simply click the ROM you want to flash and next thing you know, it's flashed... I also forget to hold down the volume rocker sometimes which is a pain in the ass (although that's my own dumb fault)
I would have to agree. I used ROM Manager on my N1 for a long time and I would just jump from ROM to ROM for the fun of it but using the "manual" method (eg. Tenfar's) it kind of makes me want to stick with a ROM for extended periods of time.
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing "hard" about using Tenfar's CWM or anything like that, it's just a preferential thing.

[Q] What is the best way to backup my LG P500?

Hi everyone,
I want to root my phone (will use this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200167 - I dont understand much about this but ohh well) and i read this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900905) so i kinda knew what i was doing. And as i understood from that thread, the best way to backup all my data (like creating my custom rom right?) is with nandroid! But what is nandroid and how can i backup my data with it?
I just would like some suggestions from you! what i should do and how i should do it before i root my phone?
Thank you in advance!
After root install custom recovery, reboot phone to it and choose backup, wait and its done.
send from Andy's PHOENIX.
i didnt quite understood the install custom recovery! how can i install it? i can only do a backup of my recovery when i root my phone?
would be awesome if i could have a private chat with someone who could lose some of their time explaining me this!

After rooting your phone, please read this how-to and you should able to install recovery just fine
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146566
BTW, prefer installing TWRP v1.0.3.13b recovery instead of the buggy CWM or old amonra
I forgot to mention that my knowledge about this is basically "0"! So i would thank you if you could explain a little better!
Sorry and thank you once again for understanding!

ok, my understanding is that in order to use nandroid backup, your phone has to be rooted first.
in the link you posted about rooting GB 2.3.3 ROM, it only mentioned using astro file manager to backup the apps. nowhere it mentioned nandroid backup.
if you are rooting a froyo(2.2/2.2.x) based phone, it is really quite simple. I do not think any kind of backup is needed at all.
Well i finished rooting my phone. Went well with no problems. Quite simple in fact, but what i wanted to know is, imagine i install a custom rom (btw, i know kernel improves the performance of your phone, so what does a custom rom does?) that i suddenly dont like, so i want to get back to my hold one. How can i backup my original rom?

OK, my suggestion is to use ROM manager from market. quite noob friendly.
it has backup/restore option right there. just follow the menu.
Oh ok! thank you very much for your time! i'll remember myself to use that app when i think of getting a new rom! probably tomorrow or so!
again, thank you!

To use ROM Manager features you must inevitable flash CWM recovery and to do so you have two options, first beign flashing it via ROM Manager that can cause a bricked phone, or use recovery flashing how-to i posted earlier and install buggy and crappy CWM from there, thats why i recommend TWRP recovery

Ya, its not that it'll break phone but many features dont go well like zip signature verification which verifies that everything is correct in the zip and so the flash process will not cause a corrupted filesystem, mmm the amount of "No" confirmations are frankly ridiculous... some users reported flashing problems with the last version 5.0.2.0... Cannot repair SD Card, doesnt have touchscreen support and it cannot make selective backups which frankly s%x cause you wasted time and space... (also the fact that doesnt have themes support and cant compress backups...)
And also the fact tha maaany maaany users including me have bricked their phones flashing via ROM Manager... And also the fact that wiping cache & dalvik with CWM will cause conflict with a2sd script users...
Anyway @Palmaaa if you want to risk your phone flash via rom manager... if you want a crappy recovery flash CWM.... if you want the best and safest recovery then prefer TWRP v1.0.3.13b, your phone and your physical keys will say thank you
I appreciate your warning! ill try to search a bit more about what im going to do next!
Never use ROM manager. It breaks the phone and it gets stuck at LG logo on boot. Many users have reported the issue. Use the recovery for flashing and taking backups.

It doesn't make a difference if you did not face issues. There are many people who have faced the issue and ONLY because of ROM manager. Just wanted to prevent another user from facing a similar issue and instead use the clean and safe method of custom recovery.
You tone showed that you're arguing. That last sentence doesn't make any sense.

[Q] rom manager not recognizing fascinate

This is the first time I rooted my phone and I used step 6 on this link in your forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070 . Everything went fine but I then downloaded rom manager and when I select flash clockworkmod it only gives me the choice of choosing the samsung epic4g or the samsung galaxyS i9000. It does not give me the option of choosing the fascinate. I selected the i9000 but stopped there because I figured that I should try to fix this situation and be able to select the fascinate, before I move foward. Please help me move foward so I will be able to put a rom on my phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

rom manager is useless for the fascinate...
I also ran into this issue. If your CWM is not "sticky" (it goes to System Recovery <3e> when you reboot recovery), you must flash the appropriate version of CWM with ODIN before a ROM flash. (CWM ALL.tar for bml roms [anything that is not cm7, MIUI, or ICS] or cwm4_fixed_for_cm7.tar for MTD ROM's [cm7, MIUI, or ICS])

But if that's the case, why does Koushik make a ROM for the fascinate and have it available on his site?
(Does the Epic4G simply represent all CDMA phones, and the i9000 GSM? Don't see why that would matter anyway tho)
(I can't post a direct &#% link yet, but it's on his website.
This makes absolutely no sense!? He's got ROMs up there for just about every Android phone on the market, all to be used with ROM Manager.
I wanted to install it via Odin but naturally that would be too simple: it's a zip file and Odin won't recognize anything but tar and 2 others formats.
You can flash any .zip ROM with CWM. There's no need for ROM Manager. BTW, you can post a link if you uncheck "parse links in text automatically."

all you need to do is boot into cwm recovery via the power menu and flash away. the problem with rom manager on the fascinate is getting into the right recovery...causes more problems than its worth on this device. make sense yet? probably not since you have not been down this road yet, but many of us have. so take the advice given or dont and learn the hard way.
Honestly, I am trying to take the advice given but not all of it fit my situation.
I'm definitely something of a noob to Android (Not to linux or IT though). I've had my phone for all of a month and rooted it only days ago.
It's all starting to come together, finally. It's tricky for a noob because there are so many different versions of the phone hardware, versions of Android, this or that kernel that only works with these ROMs, old/newer versions of those, old posts and advice, newer posts with adjusted advice.. etc.. It's been a week long crash course!
Anyhoo, I couldn't flash/upgrade CWM because it didn't stick from the original Odin install. When I rebooted, I'd always return to the stock <3e> recovery. Even after two more installs of CWM via Odin.
I used the cwm-recovery-all.tar in your guide, Droidstyle. (great job BTW)
I followed the directions in Section 6 to the letter. I even printed it out and highlighted key sections.
So you see, I was in a catch-22; I needed CWM to flash CWM? Odin was my only option at that point.
Then I read on another thread here about renaming the /system/recovery-from-boot.p script, and installing CWM once more.
That worked, so now I can finally boot into CWM recovery like a happy man. (I also tried a more specific version of CWM for good measure: cwm4-bml-i500.tar, not really sure if that made a difference)
So I made my first real nandroid backup last night.
Next on my list is a new kernel. Still deciding between KGB, lean, and whatever else is out there.
I still don't get the whole mess with ROM Manager though. I agree with you, DS, I just don't get why he'd have zips for every phone under the sun but his own app doesn't seem to allow them to be used. It's bizarre. The latest reviews on the market are not flattering either.

You are on the Samsung Fascinate. If it is Verizon then it is model number i500. If it doesnt say Fascinate or i500 it isn't for your device and you don't need to worry about it. If you flash something that isn't stated as being for the i500 or VERIZON Fascinate then you will have a lovely new temporary paper weight.

You couldn't have followed it to the letter because it is a well known fact that if you boot up with a stock kernel still flashed it will replace your recovery. Droidstyle certainly knows this and certainly accounted for it in his guide. So, you need to either boot directly into CWM or flash a non-stock kernel prior to rebooting the phone.

you can...But
I've always prefered the recovery for a restore of backups, and to create them. Recovery is fool proof, and will provide the type of files it can read. but when using apps to perform a recovery function, the risk goes up.
Rom manager is a good app, but I have had issues with it in the past, and do not use it now....g
So all in all, its better to use CWM for backing up, and restoring, as apposed to using an app like "Rom Manager"?
Thanks again gregsarg. You've been super helpful!

I believe so, yes...:good:
any time you rely on an app, to perform a function, you are relying on the build parameters of the app. and since there are sooooo many variables in software etc. you can get errors.
Recovery is a good choice for creating a solid backup...IMHO
Have you personally tried a back up using CWM on the Galaxy Note i717d? Just out of curiousity.

More times than you can count, on the SGH-I717 (ATT) and the N7000 (international) note.
CWM operation is the same for both....and they both run and restore well using this method....g
Everybody flashing the custom rom uses either CWM or TWRP to create backups before they flash.
If you rely on Rom Manager, and a rom goes bad (like they sometimes do), you won't be able to boot and use Rom Manager.
Recovery can be accessed even if your rom flash is bad.
and now you see the method to my madness.....
Use recovery, and life will be "much" better......g

Always welcome ....g
Confused.
Okay, all of you here have totally confused me. I have used CWM Recovery for a while now and decided to try ROM Manager. As far as I can tell RM only allows you to flash CWM updates and collect information and input that info into CWM. I will say that the installation of CWM-Touch has an issue but that might be my own doing. I can live with the old version though.
ie: If you want to install a new ROM, you pick if from your SD card and RM boots you into CWM and it does its thing. You want to make a BU...? Just push that button and it boots into CWM and boom...its done. (It also asks you if you want to do the wipes.)
I can still do all this by booting into CWM manually without using RM...so I don't get why some of you say not to use it (ROM Manager.) It does the same thing but as far as I can tell it does not prevent or change Manual operation in CWM in any way.
I don't see the problem here. Please correct me if I'm wrong...and some theory too if you can.
Try running a CWM restore , using rom manager , when your phone won't boot due to a corrupt or incorrect flash....
The point is ...it isn't gonna happen...as rom manager is an onboard app.
And in my opinion, one that users depend on far to much....
We are simply eliminating that potential problem area ...but hey ...use it if you want....I'll use recovery ....g

Okay, maybe there is a mistake in terminology here.
My point is that you don't have to use Rom Manager to get into CWM Recovery. You can use it--or not...ie" If I can't get to CWM from the ROM, I just do the volume + - and power as usual. So I don't get "your" point. Once CWM is installed it can be accessed by either method. I have done it both ways with no issues so far. I'm not arguing with you I'm just trying to understand what I might be missing.
When a new samsung phone is released to the public, the first thing developers do is try to change the stock 3e recovery with CWM so they can do the next step -- flash a rooted kernel. Two things we can't live wirhout.
Next, app developers step in and create apps that make the operating system more accessible -- like Rom Manager.
With the note, CWM (and now TWRP) and root came pretty fast after the release because it is very similar to all the Galaxy S phones. But Rom Manager didn't get done for a while, but in the meantime users installed it and borked their phones by overwriting CWM with recovery from other phones. When that got fixed, the nandroid feature didn't work either, so people experemented with roms without realizing they didn't have backups.
There are lots of people who never check a date of a thread and all that old stuff and outdated advice is still floating around causing havoc.
So like all threads helping someone troubleshoot their phone, you eliminate the known causes of trouble one step at a time.
Use what works for you.

Understood ...
I realize that CWM is accessed by rom manager, and I also understand that the device doesn't need it to access recovery.
As ranger said, it was risky at first to use RM , and it has since been repaired for the note.
My point is, rom manager is a step in the process that can stop folks from getting to recovery through the rom. (If the phone goes wonky) And you would be amazed at how many people can't manually boot to recovery.
My personal time spent with rom manager has caused me to "not " use it. My days on HTC were horrid with that app. And it has corrupted more than 1 recovery for me.
Of course , the choice is yours to use it .....it's okay, but a step that can cause huge problems....
And I encourage new users to learn the traditional method.....g
Many thanks to the two of you, very good answers. Sorry to push this but i have seen posts that say parts of what you said but never a good reason for their comments.
Thanks again.

I'm glad to explain it. A history lesson is usually helpful.
I started with CWM but then switched to TWRP, they just released an update and you can get it from GooManager App. I like TWRP better.
The only catch is you cannot restore backups created by one recovery with the other. You will have to reflash the recovery who's backups you want to restore.

[Q] CWM or TWRP

Up until recently, I've been a fan of CWM, but now that I am playing with 4.4 custom ROMs and various kernels (particularly Apolo), I am getting some experience with TWRP as well. I like TWRP. It seems more flexible than the 4.4. compatible CWM, but I'd like to know which is really the preferable recovery to use, i.e, what the typical shortcomings or problems are with each with 4.4.

It comes down to which you prefer. One isn't technically 'better' than the other. However on i9100 with a combined kernel/recovery, you'll likely end up using whatever comes bundled with your kernel of choice. Bear in mind you can't 'mix' backups between the two... I.e. if you make a backup in TWRP, you need to restore it in TWRP, same goes for CWM.

I was using CWM with the stock rooted roms until about the end of last year, when I switched to Omnirom which uses TWRP.
I think TWRP is more easy to use it, with a better UI.
I used CWM until i upgraded to KK, now im with TWRP, other that the fact im still a bit lost on menus at times, i havent really felt much of a difference (im not much of a power user, just the usual wipe/new rom kind of person)
